Happy New Year! A couple of years ago we both hated WW84 and needed to rant about it for our Patrons. For a while. So here's the second part of our breakdown, just in case you're interested. It's part scholarly film theory analysis, part snarky nitpicking, part exasperated diatribe. We explore the themes of female empowerment, wish fulfilment and 80s nostalgia while laughing/crying about the anachronisms, inconsistencies, and just plain shitty filmmaking that is WW84.There's a LOT to hate about this film, so there's plenty more on our Patreon at patreon.com/ftrump if you just can't get enough.. We have a long discussion about Queerness and outing culture. We discuss our own personal experiences as well as the histories we are aware of from decades gone by. Then we ask the eternal question. Is Republican senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina gay? This comes up while discussing the merits of outing in a system where closeted republicans who have the wealth and privilege to vote against the rights that LGBTQ people without their wealth and privilege need. MOVIE TIME!!! We review WW84 and John Wick and fold in some GoT critiques while acknowledging that Elijah a GoT superfan isn't with us on this episode. The John Wick discussion reveals Darien and Alexander's love of realistic weapon reloading in cinema. Then we sadly get to Theon Greyjoy and Reek, and violence toward people and animals in film and TV. Chris discusses the porous boundaries of his cohosts in regard to their desire to avoid political discussions on the podcast as he gently slips into a discussion attempt around Trump's appearance and speech at CPAC. This leads to a side discussion about big tech, and antitrust action which eventually leads to another big question of our time. What has been the effect of the proliferation of the Internet and Social Media on humanity. We discuss the Echo Chambers we create as well as our exposure to them. Darien Is studying the BIBLE...well actually some gnostic texts...good stuff to read. Read everything you can. The more you know.... We discuss the phenomenon of older men seeing or marrying younger women and the ins and outs of all that. We give long gratitudes because goddamn we are grateful. Chris then reveals that he implants nightmares into Chris Mortoenson's mind via suggextion including a rather horrific one about a WASP KING. Chuck starts out by talking about the idea of "red flag movies," and how the very IDEA makes him see red (I'm sorry). We put that absurd idea to bed, then I tell Chuck about Wonder Woman '84 and my thoughts on that. Chuck tells me about the Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy and how much he enjoyed it. I then surprise Chuck with a bonus recap of the early-80's film "Up The Creek." I am also surprised I watched it. We answer some listener emails about the Arcade 1-Up, our show recap, and watching a movie sans trailers. That provides a nice segue into a discussion about the trailer for the new Spider-Man film. After we clean up our laps, we talk about the new trailer for "Shredder's Revenge," then the just-release footage from the next Saints Row game. Once we clear out our pop culture brains, Chuck tells me about his trip to the Emergency Room last week and what the doctors discovered living inside him! (Surprisingly, not a Nerf dart!) - Chuck MP3 Download
TW: Rape, sexual assault, and I say the word penis more times than intended. . For the end of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I wanted to explore the consequences of our cultural gender norms and toxic masculinity on men and boys. . The fallout for girls and women (trans women are women, trans rights are human rights) are obvious. Think Chanel Miller and Trans Panic Defense. . However, if we want to break the cycle of violence, we must also examine how toxic masculinity is harmful to men and boys. As the recent WW84 movie depicts, male survivors are often parodied and overlooked. . Today, we explore this intersection of a system that sets men and boys up to perpetuate violence, while also subjecting them to abuse as well. . We examine how they made Wonder Woman a rapist. . WW84. Was it a terrible movie? Yes. But was it totally worthless? And why do people think the first one was so great anyway? Is it even possible to get the Wonder Woman movie we deserve? Rebecca and Maya are here to get trashed and parse the Talmudic intricacies of these questions for you!
Wonder Woman 1984 or WW84 as it is also known is the most recent cinematic addition to the DCEU. Warner Brothers was so sure the movie would be a hit that they green lit the third Wonder Woman film just a few days after releasing WW84 to theaters and HBO Max. And in our opinion they were right to do so. Today on the Bear & The Beard the Nerdtastic get into their review of the movie and talk about our likes and dislikes as we go. !!!Spoilers!!! In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff celebrate Reflection! With 2020 finally over, its time to look towards the future. Jeff and Heather share two stories where taking a look back can help you thrive moving forward. Heather starts the summary section off with her coverage of Wonder Woman 1984 (WW84), the newest super hero movie by director Patty Jenkins. WW84 picks up decades after the original, which was set during World War 1. Heather discusses the life lesson Diana must learn from the scenes of her as a young child in the beginning – “No true hero is born from lies”. Did you know? Gal Gadot was pregnant for the majority of the filming of this movie. Jeff follows up with his first official novel submission; Nick Hornby's 1995 classic High Fidelity. Dealing with main character Rob Flemming's most agonizing break ups, High Fidelity mixes humor with sophistication and a dab of toxic self-sabotage. Jeff explains how Rob's journey into his past help him heal in the present, and how fixing your flaws can help you move forward into the future with a new outlook. Fun Fact! John Cusack, who plays Rob in the 2001 film adaptation was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as self reflection, mistakes/lessons learned, choices, growth, and goal setting. They also discuss times in their lives where a good period of reflection has enriched their own lives. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how Wonder Woman 1984 &High Fidelity compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate the two. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy! Heather's Rating of Wonder Woman 1984: Nice – Gal Gadot steals the show and is a great role model for women and men alike. May be confusing for non-comic book fans and the film runs a little long. Jeff's High Fidelity: Very Nice – Some of the characters do not age well, but the writing is very insightful and unique to this writer. If nothing else, it'll make you want to pick up some vinyl records. Gal Gadot reprises her role as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel to the 2017 film that also features the return of director Patty Jenkins to the franchise. Diana lives quietly among mortals in the vibrant, sleek 1980s -- an era of excess driven by the pursuit of having it all. Though she's come into her full powers, she maintains a low profile by curating ancient artifacts, and only performing heroic acts incognito. But soon, Diana will have to muster all of her strength, wisdom and courage as she finds herself squaring off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah, a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility. The Geek Buddies aka John Rocha, Michael Vogel and Shannon McClung get together to revisit the 80s thru the eyes of Patty Jenkins and offer their spoiler filled assessment of WW84 and how it compares to the 2017 Wonder Woman movie. They reveal what they liked, didn't like, felt worked and didn't work her along with their thoughts on the acting, direction and screenwriting in the movie.Remember to Like and Share this episode on your social media and to Subscribe to The Outlaw Nation YouTube channel below.#WonderWoman1984 #Review #TheGeekBuddies To become a Patron of John Rocha and The Outlaw Nation, please go to https://www.patreon.com/johnrocha to join one of the multiple tiers and enjoy the benefits of being a patron of the channel.Follow John Rocha: https://twitter.com/TheRochaSaysFollow Michael Vogel: https://twitter.com/mktoonFollow Shannon McClung: https://twitter.com/Shannon_McClung--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-geek-buddies/message
