The latest episode of The Shameless Plug — the show in which Chris Hewitt and Empire editor Nick de Semlyen dig into the latest issue of Empire magazine — is here, folks, and it's a cracker. Join Chris and Nick as they talk about the Masters Of The Universe cover story, Chris' encounter with Renny Harlin, and the long pursuit to nab Jon Hamm for Pint Of Milk. We should have just scooped him up in a Hamm-net. Elsewhere in the episode, the two talk Threads, magic trees, and Chris does a First Line Of A Feature read in a Scottish accent. Our apologies to the people of Scotland. We hope this will not damage relations between our countries. Enjoy.
Jay and Mark discuss the 2026 horror sequel The Strangers - Chapter 3. Directed by Renny Harlin and starring Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Richard Brake and a whole lot of flashbacks, the third film in the Strangers saga sadly doesn't feature any wild boar fights. In this episode, they also talk about mask-talking, mask-kissing, and French tucks. Enjoy!
Send a textThe second part in our box office flop season of podcasts is here, and this week, Liam and Rob look back at the movie that 'supposedly' killed the pirate genre. That's up for debate, but what isn't is the fact that Cutthroat Island lost a huge amount of money, arguably did irreparable damage to both Gina Davis and Matthew Modine's careers, and ended up putting its production company, Carolco Pictures out of business. Yeah, Renny Harlin's pirate epic was an unequivocal financial disaster.....but what of the movie itself? Is it better than its meagre box office and rotten reputation would suggest? Is it worth giving this often overlooked swashbuckling extravaganza another go? Listen in via your podcast platform of choice to find out.
Before embarking on a new season next week, this is the third and final instalment of our 2025 clip shows, featuring the best of our recent conversations over the last 12 months. From debating the anatomical accuracy of kangaroo prosthetics to Danny “Boyling” down the legendary career of the British filmmaker, we're covering all cinematic bases. Join us for the usual film discussion and tangents as we ponder the filmmaking “genius” of Renny Harlin and why Sylvester Stallone's head looks like it was pasted onto a car with glue and a prayer. We also give flowers to the likes of Lori Petty, Jeff Bridges and Burt Reynolds, while wondering if Michael Ironside and Roy Scheider were the ultimate “fish guys” of the 90s. What to expect from the show: Discover why Ron Perlman was sadly passed over for the role of a mutant kangaroo. Hear the disturbing search for a lost, degraded silicone prosthetic from the Stann Winston estate. Learn how Davina McCall was nearly elevated from host of Streetmate to a Spice Girl. Dan defends his yearly tradition of watching Driven, despite Sarah's best efforst to leave the room. We speculate whether a talking dolphin in SeaQuest DSV is actually the peak of 90s television. Sarah reveals her dark past as a digital deity who tortured The Sims with clown paintings and lack of sanitation. The American Pie franchise gets a gritty, environmental reboot involving socks and methane. Find out why locking the butler in the freezer in Tomb Raider 2 is a universal gaming experience. Lock your doors and hide your resumes—we're diving into the absolute best (and bloodiest) cinema has to offer this week. Whether you're here for the jumpscares or the biting social satire, we've got you covered! The "Venus, Oregon" nightmare finally comes to a close. We're reviewing the final chapter of Renny Harlin's ambitious trilogy. Maya (Madelaine Petsch) is back, but things get weirdly intimate this time as she faces off against Scarecrow in what director Renny Harlin calls a "dark romance." Does this conclusion stick the landing, or are we just happy to finally leave that cabin?Fun Flix Fact: This trilogy was a massive undertaking—all three movies were filmed simultaneously over 91 days in Slovakia. Because they shot out of order, Madelaine Petsch had to keep a "trauma diary" just to remember exactly how much her character, Maya, was supposed to be spiraling in any given scene!Sam Raimi is officially back in the director's chair for the R-rated survival thriller Send Help. Starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien, it follows an office manager and her nightmare boss after a plane crash. It's part Cast Away, part Misery, and 100% Raimi chaos.Fun Flix Fact: There is a scene involving a "fake-out castration" that had audiences screaming (and then laughing) in theaters. To get those "geysers of blood" just right, Raimi used his signature practical effects—mechanical bladders that actually drenched the actors. Dylan O'Brien reportedly had to stay perfectly still for four minutes while the "blood" sprayed everywhere! To celebrate 20 years of the film that basically invented the modern home-invasion genre, we're revisiting the French masterpiece Ils. If you think The Strangers is scary, you haven't seen the original inspiration. We discuss how this 74-minute lean, mean thriller still holds the crown for the best "Why are you doing this?" reveal in history.Fun Flix Fact: The actress Olivia Bonamy (who plays Clémentine) suffers from severe claustrophobia in real life. When you see her character panicking while crawling through those narrow, muddy underground tunnels at the end of the film? That's not acting—that's genuine terror! For this week's Hidden Gem, we're talking about the latest masterpiece from the legendary Park Chan-wook (Oldboy). No Other Choice stars Lee Byung-hun as an unemployed paper mill manager who decides that the only way to get a job in this economy is to... well, literally eliminate his competition. It's a pitch-black satire on capitalism that will have you laughing and cringing in equal measure.Fun Flix Fact: Despite the movie being a dark comedy, lead star Lee Byung-hun recently admitted he had no idea he was making a "slapstick" film until the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival! He thought he was playing a serious, tragic character, but when the audience started roaring with laughter at his "clumsy" assassination attempts, he realized he'd accidentally become a comedy star. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Legendary director Renny Harlin joins us to talk all things The Strangers: Chapter 3, the brutal conclusion to his ambitious new trilogy. We dig into the film's striking, almost poetic cinematography, the creative gamble of remaking and expanding one of horror's most uncompromising IPs, and the bold choices that led to a truly shocking trilogy ending.Renny also opens up about the massive 3+ hour re-edit cut of the films, how the trilogy was designed to function as one long nightmare, and whether there's still more blood left to spill in The Strangers universe.A fascinating, candid conversation about fear, franchise storytelling, and pushing modern horror further into the dark.If you enjoyed this - Check out my other content here - https://linktr.ee/FirstClassHorrorBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/class-horror-cast--4295531/support.
New episode! Mark and Jay finally get around to covering Renny Harlin's latest film, The Strangers - Chapter 2! Did Renny make a pig's ear of it, or will it cure your boar-dom? Did he hog all the good stuff for Chapter 3? Is it a banger? Surely it's too early to make such a rash(er) decision. Well chop chop and give it a listen, as Chapter 3 is going wee-wee-wee all the way to the cinemas soon!
Legendary action director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) is our guest this week to talk about the latest chapter of his Strangers reboot trilogy, his collaboration with Steven Spielberg early in his career, and how much of an impact Jaws has had on many of his films, including his own killer shark flick Deep Blue Sea. We talk color theory, visual storytelling, how and when you can lose an audience, and what can be learned from watching Spielberg's films. Learn more about your ad choices. This is a fun week for me on BEHIND THE LENS, given the two films that we're talking about and the two filmmakers I'm speaking with. It's a great way to kick off my 44th year as a film critic (although I was published with reviews going back 5 years before that)! Today you'll hear from one of my all-time favorite directors, RENNY HARLIN, as we talk about THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 3, which now completes his trilogy of the rebooted classic. And, then a new fave writer/director BRYAN FULLER, who makes his feature directorial debut with the sumptuous and fun visual feast, DUST BUNNY. First up – RENNY HARLIN and THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 3. The Strangers began back in 2008 thanks to w/d Bryan Bertino, who treated us to the tale of James Hoyt and Kristen McKay, who visit an isolated vacation home to enjoy some time together. Hopeful bliss turned into terror, making their stay a bloody nightmare. In 2018, director Johannes Roberts, with a script by Bryan Bertino and Ben Ketai, rebooted the franchise with The Strangers: Prey at Night, starring Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, and Christina Hendricks. It was always Johannes's intent to do a sequel, but that didn't pan out. But then in 2024, RENNY HARLIN stepped into the franchise with what has become a three-chapter series with all three films shot at the same time over 53 days of principal photography, with a cast led by Madelaine Petsch. Now, we have the final piece of the puzzle with THE STRANGERS CHAPTER 3. Maya is again the last woman standing. She survived what she thought was the worst of the worst, but now she must move on. But how to do that, when she must face the masked killers one last time in a brutal, full-circle reckoning of survival and revenge. This final chapter is very internalized, very observational as Maya tries to absorb what all has happened while trying to understand the psyche of these masked psychopaths. Where lighting and lensing were the key tools in the cinematic toolbox for Chapter 2, sound becomes all-important with CHAPTER 3. And that's what Renny and I focus on in this exclusive interview. Switching gears into a film that I absolutely love is my conversation with writer/director BRYAN FULLER, talking DUST BUNNY. This is a cacophony of creativity and truly a sumptuous visual feast! How the work of production designer Jeremy Reed was ignored by the Academy members in Oscar nominations is beyond me. His work, in concert with that of costume designers Olivier Beriot and Catherine LaTerrier, and cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, is vibrant, alive, and magical. Written and directed by Bryan Fuller, DUST BUNNY stars Mads Mikkelson, Sigourney Weaver, and a scene-stealing performance by Sophie Sloan as the precociously adorable Aurora. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
An amazing chat with Renny Harlin, director of The Strangers: Chapters 1-3! From Die Hard 2 to Deep Blue Sea, his filmography is insane. What struck me most was his love for movies and the art of storytelling. His characters leap off the screen, especially Maya's journey in this trilogy. We heard what he wanted the audience to walk away with, how it was for him to work on the full trilogy, and so much more. It truly was an insightful look at the huge project as a whole. This movie will surprise a lot of people, and I think it did an amazing job ending this story. Out in Theaters February 6th! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this week's episode we check out an early effort from director Renny Harlin. Get ready for 1987's Prison. It stars Lane Smith and Viggo Mortensen in an early role. Of course, if we're going to talk about a Renny Harlin film, our guest has to be the host of Deep Blue Sea the Podcast Jay Cluitt! We also have our usual movie recommendations, and our trivia game...which includes a surprise from our guest, who has apparently been keeping score all year.
Happy Harlindays! Jay and Mark discuss the 2023 supernatural thriller Refuge. Directed by Renny Harlin, and starring Sophie Simnett, Raza Jaffrey and an incredible amount of American flags, the movie focuses on what happens when a jerky mysterious force causes chaos. In this episode, they also talk about demon throws, ill-fitting hats, and Renny's shooting schedule.
It's Die Hard 2 Review time, and because it's Christmas Eve, lightning has apparently decided to strike twice. After saving Nakatomi Plaza barefoot and bleeding in 1988, John McClane is back in 1990, this time trading skyscrapers for snowstorms, terrorists, and one very inconvenient airport. Die Hard 2: Die Harder had massive shoes to fill, and the big question is simple: Did it deliver, or did it just repeat the formula louder? In this episode of Born to Watch, Whitey, Damo, and Dan reunite for a festive breakdown of one of the most debated action sequels of all time. Expectations were sky-high after the original Die Hard rewrote the action rulebook, and Die Hard 2 wastes no time reminding us of that pressure. Bigger explosions, more moving parts, and a whole airport at stake instead of one building. On paper, it should work perfectly. What follows is a classic Born to Watch deep dive. From nude Tai Chi villains with suspiciously zero side-dick continuity to John McClane apparently teleporting between airport locations, nothing escapes scrutiny. The boys unpack the strange creative choices, including the baffling need for a full SWAT team that exists solely to be wiped out, the world's loudest baggage-area shootout that nobody hears, and the endless Basil Exposition dialogue that explains things we can already see happening on screen.William Sadler's villain, Stuart, comes under the microscope, a tough gig when you're following one of cinema's all-time great bad guys. Is he intimidating, forgettable, or just unfairly compared to Hans Gruber? Meanwhile, William Atherton's return as Dick Thornburg raises serious questions about whether this character needed to exist at all, beyond being professionally annoying. The conversation drifts exactly where you'd expect, into airport etiquette, old-school plane phones that cost more than the flight itself, snowmobiles that definitely don't work on water, and the absolute insanity of an airport runway having a convenient metal grate in the middle of it. There's also love for Renny Harlin's maximalist direction, acknowledging that while Die Hard 2 may not be subtle, it is relentlessly committed to spectacle. As always, the episode isn't just about what doesn't work. The lads give Die Hard 2 its flowers where deserved, recognising the impossible task of following a cultural phenomenon and the genuine effort to recreate the tone, humour, and pacing of the original. There are discussions around box office success, audience expectations, and why some sequels are remembered more harshly than they deserve. The episode rounds out with the full Born to Watch experience, sleepers, duds, snorbs reports, random 1990 nostalgia, and side tangents that spiral into Ford Fairlane, Chuck Norris, and the best movie years of all time. It's chaotic, opinionated, and exactly how Die Hard 2 should be discussed, loudly, critically, and with mates. If Die Hard is a perfect Christmas miracle, Die Hard 2 is the messy, over-decorated sequel that still shows up to the party. Strap in, because this one absolutely earns the Die Harder title.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Die Hard 2 unfairly judged because of the original? Is this still a Christmas movie, or just airport chaos? What's the most ridiculous moment you'll always defend?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or at BornToWatch.com.au#DieHard2Review #BornToWatch #DieHarder #BruceWillis #ActionMovies #90sAction #MoviePodcast #ChristmasMovies #ActionSequels #FilmReview
I continue my reviews of unconventional Christmas movies with the yuletide classic, “The Long Kiss Goodnight”, in which you get scenes that mix automatic weapons, Christmas lights, yummy treats, bad beats, pies in the face, mistletoe and bombs that blow. Geena Davis plays Samantha Caine who can't remember most anything past 8 years ago but steadily is getting memories back. Meanwhile, the covert American government agency she, unbeknownst to her, was an assassin for, thought she was dead but now they know she's alive and they want to reverse that. Samuel L. Jackson plays Mitch Hennessey, a low-rent private eye, trying to help Samantha remember who she was. He gets caught in the crossfire as naughty government elves come to take Samantha's Christmas spirit away AKA put her in the ground. All the while, in the background, this movie drops the needle on some great Christmas tunes, which just makes this a bullet-riddled Christmas classic all the more. “The Long Kiss Goodnight” also stars Craig Bierko, David Morse, Brian Cox, Yvonne Zima, Patrick Malahide, Tom Amandes, Melina Kanakaredes, Joseph McKenna, Dan Warry-Smith, Rex Linn and Edwin Hodge. Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. It's Christmas movie season but not everyone wants peppermint sweetness and cozy small-town charm. Some of us want our holiday movies filled with explosions, heists and a whole lot of chaos. This week on the Video Store Podcast, I'm spotlighting four Christmas movies that trade twinkling lights for trouble. Reindeer Games (2000)Reindeer Games is a crime thriller set days before Christmas. When Rudy Duncan (Ben Affleck) is released from prison his only goal is to get home for Christmas. But when his cell-mate dies, Rudy steps into the man's shoes to meet his mysterious and beautiful pen pal, Ashley (Charlize Theron). One bad decision later and Rudy is trapped in a violent casino-robbery plot run by Ashley's unstable “brother,” Gabriel (Gary Sinise). With no options, Rudy is forced deeper into the operation and nothing is what it seems as alliances shift and lies are uncovered. Reindeer Games brings crime, plot twists and holiday mayhem together in one memorable movie.Batman Returns (1992)Tim Burton's Batman Returns is set against a dark, gothic backdrop of Gotham City during the Christmas season. Batman Returns introduces two iconic villains who become the city's newest threats. The first is Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, a physically deformed man who was abandoned by his wealthy parents and raised in the city's sewers by penguins. The second is Selina Kyle, Catwoman, pushed to her limit by evil businessman Max Shreck.Michelle Pfeiffer is the definitive Catwoman, seductive, broken and electric in every frame. Danny DeVito's Penguin is a grotesque and disfigured man, a departure from the comics. Christopher Walken adds a sinister element as the businessman Max Shreck.Tim Burton's vision partnered with Danny Elfman's haunting score creates a mesmerizing Christmas classic set in Gotham City. The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) lives a quiet life as a schoolteacher until a car crash triggers memories of her past life as a deadly government assassin.Samantha hires private detective Mitch Hennessey (Samuel L. Jackson) to help her uncover her past and together they set out to find the truth. Their adventure is full of gunfights, treachery, and some of the best buddy-dynamic chemistry of the '90s. Davis transforms from warm suburban mom to hard-boiled operative with shocking believability and Jackson delivers one of his funniest, most charismatic roles.Written by Shane Black and directed by Renny Harlin, The Long Kiss Goodnight mixes holiday atmosphere with espionage to create one of the 90's most underrated action movies.Lethal Weapon (1987)Lethal Weapon redefined the buddy-cop genre and set the standard for all future buddy-cop movies. Set at Christmastime in Los Angeles, the movie pairs veteran detective Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) with newcomer Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson). Their investigation into a young woman's suspicious death spirals into a violent clash with drug traffickers and the psychotic Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey).Lethal Weapon is full of heart, which is what you want in a Christmas movie. Riggs who is spiraling out of control from grief and Murtaugh, a grounded family man, form a bond that is convincing from start to finish. Also written by Shane Black, Hollywood's king of Christmas action movies and directed by Richard Donner, Lethal Weapon blends holiday themes with explosive action, dark humor, and iconic one-liners. Lethal Weapon is on of my favorite Christmas action movies. If you're looking for Christmas movies that are filled with action, these four belong at the top of your December movie list. Thanks for visiting the Video Store. The story so far: After a year and a half underground, we've made it to the best time of the year! We're back for week 2 of SELLOUT OCTOBER! During October, we watch mainstream horror movies that people have heard of before, and this week, we're waking up in the middle of the night, brewing some coffee to stay awake, and cracking into A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)! Did we enjoy this entry in the Elm Street franchise, or would we rather discuss Freddy's anatomy, falling asleep on the toilet, and our dream warrior powers, while oozing praise for the one-and-only Screaming Mad George! I'm excited for this week's BEHIND THE LENS, thanks to a director whom I adore and have been chatting with for multiple decades, RENNY HARLIN, who goes in-depth with me for THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2, and writer/director MATTHEW BISSONNETTE, who brings us a film I immediately connected with, DEATH OF A LADIES' MAN starring Gabriel Byrne. THE STRANGERS began back in 2008 thanks to w/d Bryan Bertino, who treated us to the tale of James Hoyt and Kristen McKay, who visit an isolated vacation home to enjoy some time together. Hopeful bliss turned into terror making their stay a nightmare. In 2018, director Johannes Roberts, with a script by Bryan Bertino and Ben Ketai, rebooted the franchise with THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT starring Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, and Christina Hendricks. Now in 2025, we have the chilling next chapter of THE STRANGERS franchise with THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2. Directed by Renny Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland, Madelaine Petsch returns as Maya, and joining her are, among others, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, Richard Brake, and Pedro Leandro. Now let's turn to DEATH OF A LADIES' MAN with writer/director MATTHEW BISSONNETTE. Described as a "lyrical dramedy", DEATH OF A LADIES' MAN is poetic and emotionally charged, infused with the music and spirit of Leonard Cohen, tackling multiple themes that evoke heartbreak, absurdity, and hope. Gabriel Byrne stars as the hard-drinking, twice-divorced professor Samuel O'Shea whose life seems to be going into the toilet. First, he starts seeing things – Frankenstein at the bar, strangers breaking into Leonard Cohen songs, a woman with a tiger's head and face, and conversations with his long-dead father, Ben O'Shea. He chalks it up to stress. But a terminal brain tumor diagnosis sends him reeling into a surreal, darkly funny odyssey through memory, regret, and an unexpected romance in Ireland. Retreating to his family's remote Irish cottage, Samuel tries to write the novel he's always avoided—and instead begins rewriting his own story. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy play a little catch-up this week but also replay their early review of Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, opening this week in case any of you missed it. Before that though they talk about a tribute to an iconic cult film celebrating its 50th anniversary (Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror). Gabriel Byrne reexamines his troubled life (Death of a Ladies Man) while Renny Harlin delivers the sequel to his horror reboot (The Strangers: Chapter Two) and Jordan Peele produces a very confused horror film about football (Him). If Emma Thompson with a Fargo accent trying to thwart a kidnapping on a frozen lake is more your speed they have you covered (Dead of Winter). Or maybe its about June Squibb lying about being a Holocaust survivor in Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut (Eleanor the Great). Finally there are also a pair of romantic fantasies involving tests that lead you to your soulmate (All of You) and the latest from filmmaker Kogonada with Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell in a title that speaks for itself (A Big Bold Beautiful Journey).4:26 - Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror11:07 - The Strangers: Chapter Two17:40 - Death of a Ladies Man23:48 - All of You33:58 - Dead of Winter43:23 - Eleanor the Great56:08 - Him1:07:13 - A Big Bold Beautiful Journey1:20:18 - One Battle After AnotherCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. Action Auteur, Renny Harlin joins this special bite-sized episode of the Movies In Focus podcast. In the 1990s, Harlin delivered some of the decade's most memorable and entertaining films like Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight - and my favourite go-to killer shark film, Deep Blue Sea. Now he's turning his attention back to horror with The Strangers: Chapter 2 - the follow-up to last year's hit entry in the home invasion franchise. Harlin discusses what drew him to the material, how he approached building tension in this new chapter, and reflects on a career that has constantly balanced spectacle, style, and scares. I also managed to squeeze in a question about his newest shark thriller, Deep Water.

This week, we're trying to help fight Alzheimers by genetically engineering mako sharks. Why you ask? Because this is a Renny Harlin's late 90s action horror Deep Blue Sea. Featuring an absolutely stacked cast including a pre The Punisher Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson (I don't think we do any Pulp Fiction quotes somehow), and LL Cool J (because it's not a late 90s blockbuster horror without an American rapper), what's not to love? We discuss Robbie's thalassophobia, the shark attacks, some behind the scenes tidbits and some great practical effects but bad CGI. Is this the greatest shark film after Jaws, or is it dead in the water? Please remember to hit that subscribe button and leave us a lovely review. There's new episodes every week, and we cover everything from new releases, to old classics and B movie gems. You can find us on Twitter and Instagram @cmthpodcast Theme created by Dan Motti
Before F1 The Movie came Sylvester Stallone's 2001 motorsports drama Driven—a movie in which Formula 1 refused to participate and resulted in the end of Sly's relationship with director Renny Harlin. LIVE from Vancouver, Paul, June, & Jason discuss all the montages set to rap rock, Burt Reynolds' desire to sit down, the deadly Chicago street race, Gina Gershon's fashion arc, a 55-year-old Stallone playing a 37-year-old, the daycare right next to the racetrack, and so much more.
