Just when we thought we was out, they pull us back in. To talk about Michael Crichton movies! This week it's John McTiernan's (director of Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Predator) The 13th Warrior. Considered one of the biggest box office bombs of all time this Antonio Banderas action flick is certainly not up there with McTiernan's best but it's certainly not...the worst movie. Mason doesn't like it though if that means anything to you. Con Jaime Angulo, Lord Pelayo, Abel Rodríguez y Antonio Runa, enrólate a nuestro drakkar y disponte a saquear, matar o morir. HILARIOUS & AHEAD OF ITS TIME!!! Last Action Hero Full Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects Visit https://huel.com/rejects to get 15% off your order Last Action Hero Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Coy Jandreau, Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey as they dive into John McTiernan's 1993 meta-action comedy Last Action Hero, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as larger-than-life LAPD detective Jack Slater (also of Terminator 2, Predator) and Austin O'Brien as ordinary kid Danny Madigan (Jurassic Park III). When Danny's magic movie ticket transports him into the onscreen world of Jack Slater, reality and fiction collide in a tongue-in-cheek parody of action-movie clichés. The film's standout cast includes F. Murray Abraham (Oscar-winner for Amadeus, voice of Mr. Benedict's first alter-ego), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Gosford Park) as the ruthless assassin Mr. Benedict, Robert Prosky (Dead Man Walking) as studio head Stan Wielinski, Frank McRae (Die Hard 2) as Slater's talkative partner *Ben, and Anthony Quinn (Zorba the Greek) in a memorable cameo. Don't miss the film-within-a-film spoofs—like the explosive “Jack Slater III” premiere, Slater's skyscraper parachute jump gone hilariously wrong, and Danny's frantic attempts to warn Slater about real-world dangers. Coytus, A-A-Ron, & Johnald break down every iconic moment—from Slater “breaking the fourth wall” to Danny's tear-jerking final scene where fiction and reality finally reconcile. Tune in as Coy, Aaron & John dissect the film's affectionate satire, Schwarzenegger's playful self-parody, and the ultimate question: can you ever truly escape the movies? "Yippee-ki-yay, mother**ker!" It's been 30 years since John McClane rolled out of bed (with a hangover) and straight into a city-wide terrorist scavenger hunt in 'Die Hard with a Vengeance.' In this anniversary episode, we dive headfirst into the explosive third installment, which marked John McTiernan's glorious return to the franchise, and unpack the high-octane action, the unbeatable chemistry between Bruce Willis & Samuel L. Jackson, and how it redefined the buddy-cop action formula. Complete with riddles, Germans, Samuel L. Jackson yelling, Bruce Willis shooting, bombs, blood, and explosions, we'll get to the bottom as to why this sequel still hits hard three decades later.Send us a textThank you for listening! In a World where survival depends on more than firepower… one elite team finds themselves hunted by something beyond their understanding. In this episode, Bry the Movie Guy takes a closer look at Predator (1987), the landmark sci-fi action film that redefined what an action movie could be. We'll explore how director John McTiernan blended suspense, horror, and military action to create a tense, atmospheric experience that still holds up nearly four decades later. From Arnold Schwarzenegger's commanding lead performance to Stan Winston's iconic creature design, Predator remains a milestone in genre filmmaking. We'll also dive into the film's production history, including casting changes, behind-the-scenes challenges, and how a last-minute redesign of the Predator itself helped save the movie.Plus, we'll explore some “what if” scenarios that might've taken the film in a very different direction. So, strap in, because if it bleeds… we can pod about it.
The trees move. The trees themselves move in the wind. Like the fire snake moves. And weaves down into the farmlands and the throne room. Stakes laid sharp to keep it out. Who is John McTiernan? He's one of the most prolific Hollywood action directors of all time, helming such hits as Predator, Die Hard, and The Hunt for Red October. However, his career came to a screeching halt when he was sent to federal prison for lying to the FBI and despite getting released back in 2014, hasn't directed a movie since. --Written by Mike BedardEdited by Andrew Price--Join our Discord server!https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord--Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch!https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch--Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch!http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch--Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster!https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew

Send us a textRemember Rollerball from 2002? Of course you don't, most victims block out trauma so as not to relive it over and over. This car wreck of a movie comes in at over 70 million dollars, a decent cast, and a capable director but still manages to make one of the most horrendous action movies of the early 2000s. This one has been on our shelf for a few months as a backup episode should anything go wrong and we can't record live. Well, 2024 came and went and it's time to unload this gold mind of Hollywood Crap!Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
It's time for the annual in-person holiday episode! Now, usually these episodes center on whatever the big holiday blockbuster is that season, and this time around, the timing didn't quite work out for us to do NOSFERATU (though that one's coming!). So, since our Music Supervisor Kyle Cullen had never seen DIE HARD, we decided it was time to make it happen! Producer Collin also joins us to talk John McTiernan's celebrated 1988 action classic - and probably the greatest Christmas movie of all time.

The writer Brian Abrams returns to the show from Brooklyn for the first of two episodes on the Die Hard series. In part one, Brian, the author of Die Hard: An Oral History, gives us the details on the genesis of the franchise, which perfected a formula for action comedy films that producers Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon had been developing through the eighties with 48 Hrs, Commando and Predator and instantly converted Moonlighting's Bruce Willis into a legit movie star. Brian spoke to dozens of members of the Die Hard creative team for his oral history and we discuss the film's major players, the genre innovations, its politics, and the recipe for what makes a good Die Hard movie. And I force Brian to explain the Bill Clay scene; what tipped John McClane off that Clay was Hans Gruber? Part two of our discussion, on the other four films in the Die Hard series, is available on the Patreon feed. Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. We make a case for Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2 (1990) as the platonic ideal of a blockbuster sequel - a bigger, dumber version of the original with a great supporting cast which delivers on the formula and also serves as a better “Christmas movie” than the first one to boot. We itemize our issues with McTiernan's return to the franchise with Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), and trash the final two films in the series, Len Wiseman's Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and John Moore's rock-bottom final entry, 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard, inexplicably set in Russia. "Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho."Yippee-ki-yay, motherf-ers, welcome to the party pals and Merry Christmas to one and all! The Holmes Movies Podcast crew are here with another Trilogies episode. A Yuletide themed episode just in time for the holidays. On this episode, Anders & Adam Holmes discuss the first three original films in the Die Hard franchise. The film that started it all Die Hard, then its 1990 sequel Die Hard 2: Die Harder and finally the 1995 threequel starring Samuel L. Jackson Die Hard: With A Vengeance. The first Die Hard is one of the best action films of all time that helped define the action genre of the 1980s. An influential and well crafted film from director John McTiernan, it not only was a huge box office success but it propelled Bruce Willis from TV actor to movie star. And it also introduced the world to Alan Rickman who got his big break playing the brilliant villain Hans Gruber. Bruce Willis played John McClane, a wise cracking New York police officer who is the textbook definition of the wrong guy, in the wrong place at the wrong time and who is caught in a real towering inferno of explosions, gunfights and surviving death defying stunts. From sunny California, to snowy windy Washington DC and to the hustle and bustle of New York City, there is nothing he can't handle.Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it. Die Hard landed in 1988 among a murderer's row of great movies and came out of it as perhaps the most iconic of them all. It was a coming out party for Bruce Willis the action star and Alan Rickman the villain and invented a whole new sub-genre of bottle episode action cinema. Clint, Cal and Alex discuss how John McTiernan learned all the right things from Akira Kurosawa action, why the movie doesn't matter if it isn't about marriage and how Alex can't keep holding her grudge against the movie. Alex & Justin discuss their views on how Hollywood may have learned the wrong lessons from the success of the John Wick franchise. This time, John McTiernan's Predator. Major "Dutch" Schaeffer leads an elite squad of commandos on a rescue mission behind enemy lines in Central America. These American troops are crossing borders that they are not supposed to cross, and very quickly find themselves embroiled in a life-and-death struggle against a creature from far outside their frame of reference. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) is the third installment in the Die Hard series, directed by John McTiernan. Bruce Willis returns as NYPD Detective John McClane, this time paired with Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Zeus Carver, a Harlem shopkeeper. The story begins with a bomb exploding in New York City, prompting a mysterious terrorist named Simon Gruber (Jeremy Irons) to demand McClane's involvement in a series of dangerous tasks around the city. As the plot unfolds, it's revealed that Simon is seeking revenge for the death of his brother Hans Gruber, the antagonist in the first Die Hard film. The film is known for its intense action sequences, including car chases, bomb defusals, and shootouts, all set against the backdrop of New York City. A significant aspect of the movie is the dynamic between McClane and Zeus, who start as reluctant allies but gradually develop a strong partnership as they work together to outsmart Simon. The movie adds a layer of complexity with Simon's psychological games and riddles, which keep both the characters and the audience on edge.Die Hard with a Vengeance was a commercial hit, grossing over $366 million worldwide, and received generally positive reviews for its fast pace and the chemistry between Willis and Jackson. While some critics noted it didn't quite match the original Die Hard in terms of suspense, it remains one of the more well-regarded sequels in the franchise. The film's portrayal of a city under siege and its mix of action and clever plot twists have helped it maintain a lasting impact in the action genre.

Right smack in the middle of his run of playing James Bond in four consecutive movies, Pierce Brosnan took a SLIGHT detour in this remake of a sorta-classic from 1968, the romantic thriller of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. This is a somewhat modernized remake as we follow the exploits of a billionaire playboy named Thomas Crown (Brosnan) who also moonlights as an art thief....and the crafty art bounty hunter who's on his tail (in more ways than one) Catherine Banning played by Rene Russo. And wouldn't you know it...these two take a liking for each other. Not only that but could THIS be the best Bond-life performance ever given by Brosnan, even better than when he actually played bond? Inquiring minds want to know in this breezy romantic caper directed by John McTiernan. Yes the SAME McTiernan who had directed action classics such as Predator and Die Hard more than a decade prior....who knew that he also had a romantic streak? :) Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Finally, we arrive at the film that helped put John McTiernan in both “director jail” and “jail jail” - the incoherent nu-metal fart that is 2002's ROLLERBALL. Zach Cherry continues his trend of appearing on episodes covering movies that led to actual court cases, and we do our best to try to explain what happened (both on-screen and off). Why is this film set in Borat's Kazakhstan? What was up with the extended nightvision scene? Is Griffin insane for being a Chris Kline apologist? Plus - Ben learns about the World Nomad Games of Central Asia! What if there was a 13th Warrior? What if there was a version of Beowulf so grounded in reality that the climactic battle with Grendel just kind of felt like a shrug? What if Antonio Banderas was the lead in Gladiator instead of Russell Crowe? We're just asking questions! Filmmaker David Lowery makes his long-awaited return to the podcast to talk about John McTiernan's Michael Crichton adaptation, a movie that should have kept the title of the original book - Eaters of the Dead. Such a sick title! Anyway, prepare yourself for plenty of Banderas talk, a loving deep-dive into the famous “Banderas learns the Viking language” scene, and a reveal of some Blank Check-related easter eggs in Lowery's filmography (!). John McTiernan back with the Die Hard franchise after the spectacular flop of Last Action Hero. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson back together after Pulp Fiction. Die Hard with a Vengeance is definitely part of the “we are so back” canon. Shea Serrano (who owns every McTiernan movie on VHS) joins us to chat about this explosive action threequel that features a surprising amount of New York theater actors and a bunch of childhood games and riddles. Also, you don't need us to tell you this but - Jeremy Irons hot. Also cool. “He's one of the worst to ever do it, folks…” - Steve on Chris Klein On this week's episode, we're chatting about the terrible, hatchet job remake, Rollerball! Why do studios put so much trust in dumbass test screenings? Why did McTiernan think getting all the social commentary out of this remake was a smart idea? Why were they banking so hard on the charm of… ECW's Paul Heyman? How many re-shoots does it take to sink a movie? And does this movie have one of the worst soundtracks of all time? PLUS: Orson Welles weighs in on the use of… NIGHT. VISION. Rollerball stars Chris Klein, Jean Reno, LL Cool J, Rebecca Romijn, Naveen Andrews, Oleg Taktarov, Andrew Bryniarski, and Paul Heyman as English Sports Announcer; directed by John McTiernan. Oh baby, this one's a STINKER! Sean Connery finds the cure for cancer but then he loses it (??). Lorraine Bracco delivers all of her dialogue like someone making a comment and not asking a question at a Q&A. They're both playing scientists - but where's the CHEMISTRY?? Comedian and writer Jamie Lee returns to Blank Check to talk about John McTiernan's attempt at a serious adult drama, 1992's MEDICINE MAN. We spend most of the episode trying to recast this movie to make it somewhat palatable. But the musical score is great! We love da submarinesh! Host of “Unclear and Present Danger” Jamelle Bouie joins us this week to talk about middle aged white guys, airport novels, and naval recruitment propaganda. Okay, action freaks! We're kicking off our John McTiernan miniseries - POD HARD WITH A VENGECAST - with a film that is not at all indicative of the greatness to come. Nomads! A movie where Pierce Brosnan attempts a garbage French accent and is terrified by some punks in a van. That's kind of the whole thing. Anyway - get ready for a spirited conversation about plenty of other topics, like: the filmography of Tom Shadyac! John McTiernan's super cool dad! Gerard Depardieu's face!
