In this exciting movie episode, Marc and Jordan look at the 1993 Warner Animation division effort Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, done on a tight schedule by the Batman The Animated Series crew and mis-marketed to catastrophic earnings. Fans have regarded this as one of the greatest Batman stories put to film, and while on paper there may not be a lot that's Looney about it, there's still zany performances, wild ideas and visuals, amazing animation, and Abe Vigoda.Links:Jonathan's GoFundMeSupport us on PatreonFollow us on TwitterFollow us on BlueskyFollow us on Instagram

The second half of the Batman movies are getting covered this month. These are the “dark, gritty, and serious” takes on the character that also happen to be the most critically acclaimed. We start with the movie based off of Batman The Animated Series. The late Kevin Conroy stars as THE VOICE of the Caped Crusader and Dana Delaney as his lost love Andrea Beaumont. As well as new baddie The Phantasm killing gangsters connected to Andreas father. Relieve the 90's glory with this underrated gem. Today's Good Movie Podcast marks our third visit to Gotham City, this time for 1993's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Made between the first and second seasons of Batman: The Animated Series, the movie sees Bruce Wayne's old flame Andrea Beaumont suddenly returning after 10 years. At the same time, a mysterious vigilante known as “The Phantasm” starts eliminating Gotham City's biggest mobsters. As the Phantasm strikes from the shadows, Batman's heroic public image takes a hit. Bruce himself even wonders if he should abandon the cowl and pursue a normal, happy life with Andrea. It soon becomes apparent that Bruce is not the only one to have been transformed by grief. Batman must face his own dark reflection in an explosive final battle with the Phantasm…and a certain other villain with a penchant for jokes. Is the best batman movie ever a 1993 box office bomb that Warner Bros. Failed to market properly? We think so! This week we are reviewing Batman: Mask of The Phantasm. The first animated feature film coming off the heels of Batman The Animated Series's first season. The film is unique in its approach to focus more on Batman himself and his reasoning for donning the cape and cowl rather than focus on his rogues gallery. But what is it about this animated movie that has been able to capture the essence of Batman? And what can feature length live action Batman movies learn from this film? To mark the monumental occasion of our (can you believe it???) 100th episode, we turn the Bat-Signal toward one of the most iconic figures in all of pop culture—Batman. In true caped crusader fashion, we're combining the best of what our podcast has offered with a one-time-only double feature commentary of two films that capture the darkness, complexity, and heroic resolve of Gotham's protector: Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and the animated classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993). These films hold a special place in our hearts, making this deep dive into the world of the Dark Knight a personal indulgence as we celebrate this milestone. But this episode also marks a turning point for us. While it's not goodbye, it's more like an ellipsis—a break before we return with something new and exciting. Stick around until the end for a very important announcement about an entirely new podcast project on the horizon. We can't wait to see you there! Tony, Frank, and Crystal are back once again to talk about Batman. This time it's Batman Mask Of The Phantasm. This is often considered the best animated Batman ever. Some would say the best Batman movie in general!
The iconic Batman: The Animated Series is considered the gold standard in superhero storytelling. Many consider that iteration of The Dark Knight to be the best version among comics and movies. Kevin Altieri was a storyboard artist and director on numerous episodes of the classic show. Altieri also worked on the classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm animated movie. His career also includes The Spectacular Spider-Man, Transformers: Rescue Bots, Stripperella, GI Joe: Renegades, and more. In this episode, Altieri takes a deep dive into what made the animated series so incredible, and how it has stood the test of time. He also handpicks some favorite episodes and detailed his favorite moments from Phantasm. This episode was recorded at the Garden State Comics Fest in Morristown, New Jersey. The episode also features audio from the recently released trailer for a new Bruce Timm-centric animated Batman show, Batman: Caped Crusader.
In today's episode we break down the animated classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm! This film was truly ahead of its time and the stellar voice cast masterfully covered the mental anguish Bruce Wayne experiences as he battles his internal family system about whether upholding an oath of vengeance sworn as a child or living a happy life best honors his departed parents. In this episode we cover the topics of Arrested Development, Egocentrism, and the Jungian concept of Shadow Work. “Tia Carrera's career was ruined by Tia Maria” Sweaty-browed and cramped of hand, the Panel of Peril draw furiously in real-time each and every frame of this week's film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, 1993). Soon they shall break for a feast of marshmallows; they have earned it. Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) has lived with the trauma of his parents' death since he was a young boy. Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delany) has lived with the trauma of her father's death since she and Bruce had a whirlwind romance and brief engagement. When a mysterious figure known only as the Phantasm (Stacy Keach) begins to haunt both Batman and the men associated with Andrea's father it will lead them down a path that they may never recover from. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PK5CYZlHMA ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Beaumont Sr. made a deal with the mob and it eventually cost him his life. Conveniently enough a member of Gotham's mob at the time was arch Bat-nemesis The Joker (Mark Hamill), so get him in there! Can Batman unmask the Phantasm before they exact terrible revenge, and what will be the cost on his fragile psyche? Just what did the panel think of this week's movie, pray tell? How the heckins can they improve upon this week's scheme? And who will be christened this week's most diabolical? When people think of Batman movies from the 90's, they usually remember rubber nipples and Michelle Pfeiffer before thinking about the animated Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Although a fan favorite now, the movie bombed in theaters and made such a small wave, many people didn't know it existed until years later. Batman: Mask of The Phantasm is 30 years old! Released on December 25, 1993, Phantasm holds the distinction of being the first animated Batman film to be given a theatrical release. Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso: "Vengeance blackens the soul, Bruce." Alfred Pennyworth from "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" Warner Bros, 1993. Vengeance? Is that the motivation that drives The Batman? Is he a "creature of the night" longing to satiate his troubled conscience with the blood and broken bones of his villainous prey? Or is he just a man seeking to quiet those inner demons with the one thing all humans desire--happiness? Join your hosts James, Chris, Joe, and returning friend and guest Josh Murray, for a deep dive into the complex world of The Dark Knight as presented in the feature-length animated film--"Batman: Mask of the Phantasm: Why does young Bruce Wayne choose the path of vigilantism? How does the woman from his past, Andrea Beaumont, inform his decisions? How does the man who raised orphaned Bruce reconcile his young charge's chosen path of obsession, violence, and personal loss? Who is the mysterious Phantasm? And where does The Batman's arch nemesis --The Joker--fit into this story of self-sacrifice and lost love? If this was a Silver Age Marvel comic, the blurb on the cover would read: "We dare you to find out!" But this is a carefully crafted film with as much nuance as there is action to keep you engaged and entertained. Don't be fooled by the lavish animation into thinking this is just kiddie fare. From the opening moments of Shirley Walker's soulful musical score to the unexpected climax, you will experience a Batman film quite unlike any other offering you have ever seen. Dust off that old DVD case, and pop this one in. You won't regret it.

The episode kicks off with the age-old question of the week: "Do you care about the Macy's Day Parade?" While Charles and Joe remain indifferent to the iconic parade, Kurt takes a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about the parade's bygone days when it held a special place in his heart. After a roll of the dice sets the tone, the trio dives into the "What do you think about...?" segment, discussing their recent watch along of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The dice then determine it's time for the "How do I...?" segment, where the hosts share their insights on navigating troublesome family members during the holiday season - a timely discussion as Thanksgiving approaches. You rarely encounter an accurate depiction of social anxiety in art. At least an accurate depiction that reflects our experience. We found ourselves in Turtle Bread, the new graphic novel from former Great Britsh Bake-Off contestant Kim-Joy. The discovery was thrilling, emotional, and somewhat hard to believe. Here we are, wrapped up inside a gorgeous baking comic wondrously illustrated by Alti Firmansyah. It's a gift we're eager to hand to friends, family, and strangers. Look inside and see the weird doubt and negative self-talk we struggle against daily. However, Turtle Bread also taught us that our social anxiety might not be the hindrance we sometimes label it as. Our anxiety may come with benefits. In fact, our anxiety may be a superpower unto itself. This week, Kim-Joy joins the podcast to discuss her experience with social anxiety and how writing Turtle Bread in collaboration with Firmansyah allowed her to consider her inherent gifts. We discuss vulnerability, her time in the spotlight, and how anxiety makes every situation a nightmare, but in doing so, it minimizes the agony nightmares can have on you. Turtle Bread is now available from ComiXology and will see print via Dark Horse Comics on October 4th. Be sure to stay up to date on all things Kim-Joy by following her on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and her website.
