In this episode, we trudge through Operation Dumbo Drop, a 1995 film that somehow makes the chaos of airlifting an elephant into a war zone unbearably dull. We spotlight Tai, the real-life elephant who gave a far more compelling performance than most of the human cast. While the movie struggles to decide if it's a comedy, a war film, or a Disney fever dream, we break down exactly where it goes wrong. Plus, we dig into some behind-the-scenes movie magic and ask the ultimate question: how do you make an elephant movie this boring? The Hoofin' it in Hollywood podcast has been produced by Paul, Audrey, Melissa, and Jordan. Like what you're hearing? Let us know!Discover the enigmatic world of Australian cinema with us as Super Marcy from the Super Network joins the conversation about the 1980 thriller "Harlequin." Imagine the intrigue of a political family meeting a mysterious healer—this is just the tip of the iceberg as we unravel the film's captivating narrative surrounding the Rast family and the elusive Gregory Wolf. Spearheaded by talents like Robert Powell and David Hemmings, and guided by director Simon Wincer and screenwriter Everett DeRoche, we explore how "Harlequin" stands as a unique gem within the Ozploitation genre. Reflect on how this film fits into the broader tapestry of Australian cinema, and why it's a must-watch on platforms like Australia's Broly. From political thrillers to historical mysteries, the episode takes a fascinating detour into the real-life enigma of former Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt. Vanished without a trace, his disappearance sparked wild theories, from CIA abduction to submarine escapes, and we ponder the irony of a swimming pool bearing his name. We even draw unexpected parallels between this national mystery and the triumphant moment in rugby league history when the Cronulla Sharks finally claimed victory, "turning off the porch lights" and ending decades of anticipation for their loyal fans.Peel back the layers of "Harlequin" as we dissect its themes of illusion versus reality, and liken Gregory Wolf's character to historical figures like Rasputin. From practical effects to Brian May's haunting score, we appreciate the artistry that sets this film apart from typical Ozploitation offerings. With lively discussions on its ambiguous scenes and the performances that bring tension and depth to the screen, this episode is an invitation to rediscover a film that challenges perceptions and captivates the imagination. Happy Halloween from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about Tim Burton! The man! The brand! The artist! The director! The lothario (complimentary)! The B-Sides today include Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, and Frankenweenie. Our esteemed guest is Maria Lewis, “best-selling author, screenwriter, film curator and pop culture etymologist currently based in Australia.” As Beetlejuice Beetlejuice still rakes in money in theaters, we discuss Burton's influence, whether or not he's actually a good director (something Burton himself has questioned in the past), his best films and his worst films, his inspirations, and the love-and-hate relationship with Disney from the very beginning of his career. There is also the observation that most of Tim Burton's films are some version of Alice in Wonderland. Including, ahem, Alice in Wonderland. Also discussed is Maria's very cool podcast “The Phantom Never Dies,” about the superhero serial character The Phantom. Another important mention is Milicent Patrick, the woman who designed the creature from the Creature from the Black Lagoon film. And finally, we take the time to appreciate the incredibly underrated Australian film director Simon Wincer. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide.

We have reached a new movie series! Free Willy trilogy begins with a flippin' good time! See what we did there? Whales have flippers so we said, forget it. You may not like the flipper joke, but we know you'll enjoy the podcast! Free Willy is a 1993 American family drama film, directed by Simon Wincer, produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Jennie Lew Tugend, written by Keith A. Walker and Corey Blechman from a story by Walker and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures under their Family Entertainment imprint. The film stars Jason James Richter in his film debut, Lori Petty, Jayne Atkinson, August Schellenberg, and Michael Madsen with the eponymous character, Willy, played by Keiko. The story is about a 12 year old orphaned boy named Jesse who befriends a captive orca, Willy, at an ailing amusement park. When he discovers that the park owner has been planning to dispose of Willy, he hatches a scheme to break Willy out of captivity. Released on July 16, 1993, the film received positive attention from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $153.7 million from a $20 million budget. It grew into a small franchise, including an animated television series, two sequels, and a direct-to-video reboot in addition to inspiring the rehabilitation and release of Keiko. The film marked Keith A. Walker's only film as screenwriter, and last project before his death in late December 1996.
Superhero movies? Oh, go on then. A pair of very different projects take centre stage here, at different ends of the budget spectrum.2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice was a pivotal movie for Warner Bros, and a big screen showdown that it'd first attempted nearly 20 years previously. This time, director Zack Snyder was effectively charged with leading the fightback against Marvel and its cinematic universe - and his Batman/Superman showdown would have plenty of ramifications. In the case of 1996's The Phantom, here was a lower budget superhero outing, where the price was chopped just weeks ahead of filming. Joe Dante had originally been set to direct, and Simon Wincer would step in. But 10 days away from release, the boss of Paramount was very aware few people had heard of the movie...Stories of both are told in this episode. Hosted on Acast. D.A.R.Y.L. D.A.R.Y.L. mola. Mola mucho.

Twenty-five years of white saviors in purple spandex. Okay, so maybe it was more like one terrible opening weekend for that particular superhero trope and for that we lay the blame all around for the auteur Simon Wincer's summer blockbuster that wasn't: Treat Williams being bad... but not bad enough as the villain. Catherine Zeta-Jones being sidelined to a volume shooter off the bench. And Kristy Swanson's strange fascination with Jon Lovitz which we didn't know at the time... but we could tell that there was something off about her in 1996. All of that and a discussion on white privilege from two whites in regards to a movie with the ultimate leading man of the whites, Billy Zane!

In this episode, Billy and I discuss the 1996 superhero film The Phantom, directed by Simon Wincer and based on a newspaper comic strip from the 1930’s. This movie provided a healthy amount of contrast to modern superhero movies, especially movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Despite its lack of complexity, intensity, and over-the-top visual effects, we both had a great time watching and discussing something that is so far removed from our current exceptions. Hope you enjoy!

For Those Who Came In Late...It’s the mid-90s. Hollywood producers have seen the success that is Batman and decide to capitalize on it by adapting The Phanto-...the...Phantom? Is that right? That’s right, apparently. This Billy Zane vehicle didn’t wow anybody back in the day, but does it deserve another look?

Box office bomb or cult following? You decide. Slam evil! Directed by Simon Wincer, The Phantom is the 1996 pulp superhero film based on Lee Falk's comic strip of the same name. The screenplay is loosely inspired by the three Phantom stories, "The Singh Brotherhood", "The Sky Band", and "The Belt". That Film Stew's Luke and Comiczone's Jae revist The Phantom - talking all things the seemingly immortal crimefighter and his battles against all forms of evil. Kit Walker (Billy Zane) is the latest in a line of heroes known as The Phantom, whose powers are drawn from three ancient skulls, but now the Phantom's enemies, the Pirates of the Sengh Brotherhood, have a new ally, the ruthless Xander Drax (Treat Williams).
The MFF podcast is back, and this week we're talking about the 1996 cult classic The Phantom. Based on a popular comic strip, the Simon Wincer directed movie tells the story of a purple-clad superhero (Billy Zane) battling a very enthusiastic Treat Williams. We love this movie because it is insanely earnest, loaded with fisticuffs and features the always excellent Catherine Zeta-Jones. In this podcast, you will hear us talk about deadly skeletons, slamming evil and cheeky villains. If you are a fan of The Phantom, you will love this episode.

1996's The Phantom is directed by Simon Wincer, stars Billy Zane, is widely reviled, and is actually awesome. We'll tell you how, and it's definitely not only because we're in love with Billy Zane. That's admittedly part of it, but. It's only... it's only about 80% because we're in love with Billy Zane. Float along with us for fun facts about the comics, embarrassing ignorance of basic geology, and a hypothetical casting choice that would have made this movie truly legendary.
