A Walter Hill Film is the first critical biography of Walter Hill, the legendary writer-director producer whose filmography includes 48 HRS. films, The Warriors, The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, Geronimo, Streets of Fire, Wild Bill, Broken Trail, the Alien films, and the pilot for Deadwood. The author is Walter Chaw, film critic for Film Freak Central and a contributor to The New York Times, Vulture, NPR and many other publications. The James Joyce of crime fiction James Ellroy wrote the introduction. The foreword is by Larry Gross, Hill's writing partner on 48 HRS. The book also includes a note from Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Last Night in Soho. From the author: "A Walter Hill Film is a 400-page critical study of Walter Hill's films and early screenplays that began, as a lot of these projects do, with a question. I had recently gotten the opportunity to watch The Warriors and Streets of Fire on 35mm archival prints and even though I had seen them before, revisiting them at this time, in that format, was… visceral? Kinetic? Exhilarating. All of those things in a way almost physical, and I wanted to know what it was about these pictures - and their director, Walter Hill, that could inspire so specific a response. I felt like I was on fire. Along with a couple hundred devotees, I floated out of the auditorium. Who the hell was this guy?So I looked for books about Hill and discovered that there was one - but it was in Italian. There might be another in German, I'm not sure. But there had been no serious critical studies of him in English. Charles Taylor wrote an incredible essay about Robert Culp's Hickey & Boggs, Hill's first produced screenplay, but aside from a few rich interviews and archival videos, there wasn't much scholarship. Part of that has to do I think with Hill's own aversion to dwelling too much on his own work; but mostly, I think Hill's films are seen as merely action movies, ‘guy flicks' easily digestible and just as easily disposable. The more I watched his movies, though, the more I saw Hill as continuing in the tradition of filmmakers like Nicholas Ray, Sam Peckinpah, Howard Hawks and, especially, Robert Aldrich. Aldrich who, born to wealth and privilege, gave it all up to make ‘guy flicks' that were nonetheless rooted in social awareness and protest.I'm not an archivist, not a historian, really, and though I enjoy interviewing my heroes, I wouldn't say I have a particular gift nor interest in it. What I can do, though, is watch a body of work and identify throughlines in it that speak to me. I can, in other words, write about myself. I think that's what good critics do. A Walter Hill Film is a study of a career that has revealed itself to me as extraordinarily sensitive to issues around race and gender; a “man's man” director actually brave enough to show things as they really are in our world: broken, hostile towards culturally-proscribed underclasses. with pieces consistent through what is now a seventh decade. Of course James Ellroy wrote the introduction for it.I spoke with Hill throughout the long, four-year process of this volume, and to a few of his collaborators as well, but this isn'ta “behind-the-scenes” or 'making of' memoir. It's a process of unpacking the life's work of an important American artist. It's a book about figuring out something about these movies that set me on fire."A Walter Hill Film is being published by MZS Press, Matt Zoller Seitz's arts books imprint. Who are Sparks? What are they about? That's exactly what Edgar Wright's new documentary "The Sparks Brothers" tries to unpack and demystify. Because Sparks is not only a band (chiefly brothers, Ron and Russel Mael) but they're a highly eclectic, trailblazing artpop group that's fairly elusive and mysterious to a lot of people. As Beck says in the documentary, one of the many famous admirers, the highly influential Sparks are likely your favorite band's favorite band. They've released 25 albums, been around for 5 decades since the early '70s, and they began as an eccentric glam rock band that was a little bit like a cross between T-Rex, Roxy Music, and Queen, with a little David Bowie thrown in too. But Sparks has covered every style under the sun, pioneered synthpop, and they're massively important, yet mostly still unknown. Edgar Wright ("Shaun of The Dead," "Hot Fuzz"), says he made the documentary, in part, in a kind of way to save time at dinner parties. Instead of a 90-minute explainer, he's created a whole thrilling, deeply compelling documentary about the band, and it's one of the best movies of the year, frankly. As a big fan of Sparks and Edgar Wright, this 40-minute-ish conversation with the trio, Edgar, Ron, and Russell, was a huge treat for me. "The Sparks Brothers" hits theaters June 18 via Focus Features, make sure to catch it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
We’ve made it all the way to the end of our October spectacular. This time, we are diverting from the classic universal monster movies and taking a look at the 1968 film by George Romero Night of the Living Dead along with the 2004 parody by Edgar Wright - Shaun of the Dead. I really think we ended this deep dive into movies to watch at Halloween time with a bang. Again, these movies were very different, but Billy and I enjoyed both of these movies a ton.
A cautionary tale of not social distancing on public transportation. When it premiered in 2016, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) called this film "The best zombie movie I've seen in forever." On todays episode we bring you a gem of South Korean cinema and the zombie genre itself, Train to Busan.
The gang geeks out with fellow geek friend Richard Hahn, discussing all Richard's quarantine experiences, teaching his kids to ride a bike, Netflix's series Ozark, CW's The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, the film Darkhorse, Netflix's Chef and RIP Irrfan Kahn. We chat about zombies, Edgar Wright, key grips, Edgar Wright and shot composition (plus Edgar Wright) - Shaun of the Dead (2004)
100 FOR A HUNDRED!!!! 84. SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004, dir. Edgar Wright) Shaun of the Dead cemented its place by not only satirizing the zombie genre, but also by elevating it. The love and care that Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost put into this project is apparent as the tone switches between tense drama and comedic ridiculousness without being too jarring or disruptive. As Shaun and his ragtag gang of companions navigate their way through a zombie apocalypse, Shaun's relationship with his ex-girlfriend Liz as well as his relationship with his best friend Ed changes drastically. Pop on over to the Winchester, enjoy a lager, and watch this film.
No, not the movie where they buried Howie Mandel in blue makeup and prostheses and put him across from Fred Savage, the flick with Academy Award Winning actress, Lupita Nyong'o! Fresh off her award-winning performance in 12 Years a Slave, which-- oh yeah, was her feature film debut! Lupita opted to try out comedy in an absurd dark comedy, which adds rabid fourth graders to the classic Rom Zom formula, mastered by Peter Jackson (Dead Alive/ Brain Dead) and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead). She credits her massively jacked shoulders from her work on Black Panther, just months before. Written and directed by Abe Forsythe, a filmmaker who previously had no aspirations of making a Rom Zom. The story was organically conceived when he dropped his son, who has severe food allergies, off with his primary school teacher. While on a field trip, Forsythe wondered to himself if a zombie outbreak started at that very instant, if his son and his classmates would be safe. Forsythe was so impressed with his son's teacher, the answer was resoundingly yes. Since recording this episode, it was confirmed he is set to direct a new installment in the RoboCop franchise: Robocop Returns, rumored to have Peter Weller returning as the titular character. Opposite Lupita is Alexander England as "Uncle David" Anderson. England had previously been in Down Under, also directed by Abe Forsythe. While Josh Gad joked that this film would equate to career suicide, it seemed to be a return to his roots on The Book of Mormon. Perhaps best known as Olaf in Frozen, Gad plays the jaded children's star Teddy McGiggle, whose crowning achievement is sleeping with as many single moms as possible. This week's "Hidden Track" is Them! by Francis Hollow. The EP it's on, "The Darkness and All It's Friends," is a tribute to horror movies from the 1920's - 1950's from a more modern music perspective. Each song is based around a different movie (in order) The Wolf Man (1941), THEM! (1954), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), and Nosferatu (1922). The artwork was done in collaboration with Spanish Artist Nache Ramos, more of his work can be found at https://nacheramos.tumblr.com/. Have you seen that movie by Edgar Wright?Shaun of the Dead? I love that movie. No, the other one.Hot Fuzz - I always quote it!No, neither of those, the one with the young lad as the leadBaby Driver! Oh my god, such a cool movie, great soundtrackNone of those! The other other other other Edgar Wright movie! The World's End?Get out!If this conversation has happened to you, you're not alone. Scott Pilgrim vs The World is actually brilliant, but so are all of Edgar Wright's other movies, and so poor Scott Pilgrim tends to be forgotten.I want to change that. Scott Pilgrim has a phenomenal cast, great music, brilliant fight choreography and more video game references than all video games combined (probably). It about heart, strength, character and defeating your new loves' evil exes. What's more relateable than that? Most importantly, I've found a new ringtone and a way to swear on the podcast without actually swearing - all thanks to this movie!I would love to hear your thoughts on Scott Pilgrim vs The World!
