Sometimes the full truth stings and the half-truth feels good. This episode addresses the way that lies can sneak into our minds from seemingly trustworthy sources to tell us something our hearts desire to believe, even if it doesn't line up with God's Word. Sometimes our world stands still when we receive news we never expected, other times we have months or years to prepare for the loss of those we love. No matter how or when loss finds its way into your life you can be sure you are never really prepared for what comes after. Suffering is inevitable to some degree as long as we are living this life. If you live long enough you will be touched by tragedy and trauma. The degree to which those things affect you depend heavily on your environment, supporting community, your own innate gifts, and if you have an intimate relationship with our heavenly Father. Although we have no control over things that happen to us as we learn and grow and lean into Christ we recognize that most of us have choices now. The suffering in this life can sanctify you to Christ or separate you from Him based on choices you make. God is faithful to meet us right where we are. “When God tells you to do something, you do it.” This is a quote from Tim Ballard, played by Jim Caviezel, in the movie “Sound of Freedom”. Tim was being commissioned by God to rescue children from sex traffickers and he made a choice to act. In part two of this episode series, Kristy and Bonnie share the vision given to them for Solomon Center, a nonprofit organization they founded due to God's prompting and guidance. Solomon Center is now accepting donations to assist with building a state-of-the-art treatment center that will offer acute, outpatient, and intensive outpatient services. Solomon Center will combine brain-based, evidence-based trauma protocols and interventions with the power of the Holy Spirit. Our earthly fathers can influence and impact how or if we relate to our Heavenly Father. However, our parents are not God. People are flawed; God and his love are perfect. In Luke 11:9-13 Jesus teaches us that if we are asking and seeking a relationship with God, we will definitely find it. The topic of sex and relationships is often a tricky subject to navigate. Whether you are a teen just entering into the dating world, a more mature adult navigating single life, a married adult, or a newly divorced/widowed adult who finds themselves walking through a new season of life this episode has something for everyone. Throughout scripture we see numerous examples of God's power at work. Many times, such as in the story of Joshua and Achan, God acts in a manner that removes any doubt of His sovereignty. It would serve us well to take these into account and look inwardly to see if we trust fully in God's faithfulness or if at the first sign of things looking different than expected, we crumble.The events that follow the fall of Jericho also teach us that we must earnestly pray and examine ourselves to find what may exist within us that needs to be exposed and removed. When we do not reflect and confess our sin, we are in danger of continuing in a pattern that will likely harden our hearts and cause us to be numb to our own destruction. It's important when we confess that we are specific to what we have done and reflect with deep regret. One thing Achan did correctly was that he confessed his sin in detail. In our culture of “what makes me happy” and “how I can speak my truth”, we may find ourselves struggling to allow God to truly reign over our lives. We want to have some sense of control. We question God as to why we are in a situation or still struggling with something we already prayed about (as if praying one time should always change the outcome when we want it too). Oftentimes the truth is that we have prayed about it, but we haven't taken our hands off of it. We ask God to move but we have a death grip on the matter at hand and refuse to actually leave it with God. Forgiveness is a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment, or vengeance towards a person or group of people who have harmed you regardless of whether they deserve it or not. Reconciliation is more than simply restoring friendly relations after a relational rupture has occurred. It involves rebuilding trust, moving towards connection, and fostering intimate bonds with those who hurt us. Repentance is the foundation and must be present when considering reconciliation in our relationships.Reconciliation is not required by God. However, forgiveness is a direct instruction from the Lord. It is not optional for followers of Christ. Instead of struggling to forgive others because we think it implies reconciliation, we can separate them as two different things. Your mama may have told you you can be anything you want, but that's not entirely true. God made each one of us uniquely and he has many purposes for us. He does not always lead us on a path that uses our natural gifts and abilities. In fact, it is in God's character to do the opposite, so that we can't take credit for the things he does through us. God's plan is not for you to be whatever you want. When we are serving ourselves, it's the same as rejecting God. He asks us to look to him for guidance and surrender to his will. We have all been guilty of being deplorable humans. What? You know it's true. We admit that we have both found ourselves treating other humans like they matter less than we do. All relationships come with conflict. And the fights we have with close friends, partners, and loved ones have great potential to break us or grow us up. Anyone we let into the more vulnerable parts of ourselves has a much greater potential to harm us. If you believe that God is good and only good, this episode will give you much to reconsider. God allows pain and suffering for purposes we cannot fully know. Our understanding of our circumstances is limited; God's is infinite. When we assume that we know the mind and will of God, we will find ourselves on the road to repentance. A personal relationship with God, having a heart that is close to Him, should be our primary focus. A theological relationship with God is insufficient. As Christians we recognize the Bible as God-given revelation of His character and the purpose for His creation. One complex topic that is presented repeatedly in the text is the doctrine of the trinity. Though never named as such in scripture, the trinity plays an integral role in expressing who God is. The trinity is not a belief in three gods but rather one God in three eternal persons. There is only one God. He isn't merely playing a role, but rather personifies each person of the Godhead. Within God's one undivided being there is an unfolding into three interpersonal relationships such that there are three real persons. The Bible says in Phil.1:2 that God is the Father; Titus 2:13 states that Jesus is God; Acts 5:3-4 reiterates that the Holy Spirit is also God. The Bible further indicates that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct persons. They have always been and will always be. God the Father is the Source of all things. His primary roles/titles include Creator, Judge, Reconciler, Most High God and the Great I Am. He is loving and personal. His son, Jesus, was fully God and fully man. He is the source of our salvation through His death and resurrection as well as our eternal hope. Through Him we have access to the Father and a promise of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the revealer of truth and wisdom. He is our Comforter and Counselor. The Spirit dwells within us connecting us to the Father and the Son. We are selling ourselves short if we recognize the trinity in word only. Have you contemplated walking away from God? There are times in all of our lives when we get overwhelmed by our circumstances. Esau was just like many of us. He was more interested in what he thought he needed at the moment. He got instant gratification, but long-term earthly chaos and conflict and ultimately eternal death. Discernment is a necessary attribute of spiritual maturity. Learning to know and recognize when something aligns with the word of God or his will for your life is only part of honing this gift from the Holy Spirit. As we are learning to discern God's voice and will from our own, we will make mistakes. Effective discernment relies on our ability to sift through the information we perceive and take appropriate action. If you are truly being led by the Spirit you will act on the information He has given You! Judging what to do with the information is a matter of maturity as well. Over and over we are invited into the presence of God. He tells us He is always available. This episode reminds us that when Jesus died on the cross for us and the veil was torn, He opened a direct line of communication between us and the Creator of the world, God the Father. There are moments in our lives where it's nearly impossible to reconcile the goodness of God in the midst of our uncertainties, trauma, and emotional pain. When the cares of the world have engulfed us in despair and the fear and uncertainty encroach upon us we must ask ourselves what we know about the character of God. Our feelings may lead to thoughts that tell us differently, but the truth is, we have a choice, even when our world is crashing down around us. Do we sit in despair, believing lies, or choose to trust that God is good because He says He is? He is sovereign. His character is innately good. When desperation creeps into our life we aren't prepared for the enormous impact it has on us and the people around us. Just because we are Christians doesn't mean we are immune to trauma and pain. God has called ordinary people to unbelievable things since the beginning of time. Since he is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), we know that he is still doing the same right now. Just like the days of old, God equips everyone he calls with his strength for these tasks. Sometimes saying yes to God's will looks crazy to the world around us. We would be lying if we were to pretend that walking in this world is easy. Sometimes there are no fairytale endings or even happy ones for that matter. The capacity of the human mind to deal with trauma is extraordinary and brilliant. God has built into us the ability to escape (even if temporary) when pain or trauma has become too much for us to bear. You may be surprised to know that not all dissociation is because of a severe trauma. Have you ever been driving and listening to the radio to realize you don't even remember how you got to your destination? Well, you likely dissociated in the form of checking out. Don't worry; you aren't crazy or alone, as it is very common. The degrees of dissociation and the impact it has on one's life can vary greatly.  Bonnie's desire to empathize with Kristy and gain insight into the struggle she was having prompted a prayer that led to insights they never could have fathomed. Ananias & Sapphira were filled with the spirit of Satan and attempted to deceive fellow believers and God, but the Holy Spirit (through Peter) exposed their true hearts and motives and massive consequences followed. This taught the early church that God will not tolerate hypocrisy or attempts to deceive the Holy Spirit. Many of God's people today profess that they know him, but their hearts and true intentions are compromised. This serves as a timely message for the modern church: --Don't attempt to deceive the Holy Spirit; he will not be fooled. --Don't give Satan a foothold by loving and serving yourself first. As humans we all have basic needs- food, water, shelter, safety, comfort. Satan is cunning and seeks to persuade us that we don't need God to meet those needs. But if you don't understand the character and craftiness of Satan, you may not see the trap set for you. He is shrewd. However, God has supplied us with every tool necessary to stand firm when he attacks or when we allow our own sinful nature to take over. He gives us his authority as believers.
