Do you remember life before cell phones? Or email or the internet? Did you ever use traveler's checks or money orders? How about cameras? Kodak Brownie? Instamatic? Polaroid? 35mm? Change is inevitable. And often, it's beneficial! Yet many, if not most of us resist change, even when what's new is better than the old. Change is uncomfortable. In fact, if doing something new or trying a new way doesn't feel awkward at first, you're probably not doing it right! Often, change feels like a loss. We like what we know, even if it's not working very well. As we pick up our study in Mark's gospel this week, we find Jesus continuing to ruffle the feathers of the religious leaders. Jesus' way of doing things breaks all the rules of their religious game. And they are not happy about it. The old ways are just fine, thank you very much. Some of those who were witnesses of the transformation of the disciples at Pentecost and their joyful praising of God accused them of being drunk with "new wine." The Fathers of the Church says that they were! They were inebriated with the new wine of the Holy Spirit, which results in the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, generosity, etc. May we experience the closeness (and gladness) to God that the Holy Spirit brings!

Jesus came to make us new, not patch us up. 06/08/25 18 Once when John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don't your disciples fast like John's disciples and the Pharisees do?” 19 Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They […]

episode 227 The 167 Podcast-New Wine, Same Vine by The Porch Community Church
When Jesus came to his people thousands of years ago, the religious leaders had an ancient system of relating to God. But Jesus overturned that system of law with the way of grace. And He brilliantly said these words: No one pours new wine into old wineskins or else they'll burst. They pour new wine into new wineskins. There's something new for you. The way of Jesus is like new wine. Turn your heart to Him today. Just ask Him. Say, Lord, rid me of my old life, my old ways, my old behaviors and patterns. Fill me with new life through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Amen. Always remember there is hope with God. Scripture Reference: Mark 2:22 radio.hopewithgod.com
