Join me and Scott as we dig into Luke 5:33-39. What does wine have to do with the kingdom of God? What does new wine and old wineskins have to do with anything? We were kind of wondering the same thing. Listen to us try to sort through it all!
Message by Doug Bunnell, recorded live March 30, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church of Bellingham. Scripture read by Diane Tate.New Skins for New WineJesus is the new wine that challenges norms and is not welcomed by the old guard. Take Jesus seriously and nothing else. Why do you think Jesus chose Levi (a tax collector) to be one of His disciples? Why do the Pharisees and teachers of the law criticize Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners? How does the idea of Jesus being a "physician" for sinners challenge our understanding of who can come to Jesus? How does the imagery of a wedding feast help us understand the nature of Jesus' ministry and His presence with His followers? What does the statement, "No one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, 'The old is better,'" reveal about human resistance to change? In what ways do you, or might you, identify with the Pharisees' attitudes toward sinners and outcasts? How can you move past this mindset? Are there areas of your life that feel like “old wineskins” that might need to be transformed to receive something new from God?Luke 5:27-3927 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax-collection station, and he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And he got up, left everything, and followed him.29 Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others reclining at the table with them. 30 The Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician but those who are sick; 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”33 Then they said to him, “John's disciples, like the disciples of the Pharisees, frequently fast and pray, but your disciples eat and drink.” 34 Jesus said to them, “You cannot make wedding attendants fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise, not only will one tear the new garment, but the piece from the new will not match the old garment. 37 Similarly, no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins and will spill out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new wine but says, ‘The old is good.' ”
Wine is more than just a beverage; it's a catalyst for connection, a way to bring people together and share experiences. This week, I'm excited to invite you to join in on "Share and Pair Sundays", a campaign that encourages you to invite friends over to enjoy good food and wine together. (sounds simple, cause it is).Similar to the Come Over October initiative this past fall, it also emphasizes that it's the moments and connections around food and wine that can bring us the most joy and fulfillment. In this episode, I'm explaining what it is, how and why you can get involved and re-sharing my favorite clips from my conversation with wine writer and campaign co-creator, Karen MacNeil and my friend and chemistry nerd Dr.Hoby Wedler about why these movements are so important. You'll hear how: Residual pandemic habits have led many of us to stay comfy at home, making social gatherings feel more special than ever. Wine is more than just a drink; it's a bond that brings people together and creates community. Share and Pair Sundays encourages us to connect over food and wine, emphasizing joy and togetherness. The campaign aims to counteract the trend of isolation by promoting the act of inviting friends over. Wine has the power to transform strangers into friends and foster connections through shared experiences. A new device is expected to save Australia's wine producers hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Researchers in Melbourne have developed a smoke sensor can determine whether grapes are still salvageable after being exposed to smoke and fire. Wine Industry Smoke Detectors track smoke events like bushfires and burn offs around vineyards and advise winegrowers as to whether it's likely to taint their grapes. LA Trobe University Researcher Ian Porter told Mike Hosking all they want is for growers to avoid the emotional and financial stress from smoke events. He says that in 2020, they lost $500 million worth of grapes, and they could have saved a lot if they'd had this technology. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When the Pharisees berate Jesus' disciples for not fasting like their own disciples do, Jesus tells them that new wine won't last in old wineskins. What does that have to do with fasting? Let's find out together as we read Luke 5:33-39 and Isaiah 65.

The religious leaders send spies among Jesus' followers to try to trick Jesus with complex questions. In this context and the turning of the tables, Jesus tells two parables about a vineyard and the wickedness of the religious leaders. The parable of the two sons is about two sons. One is wicked, honest, and repentant and the other is religious, deceitful, and unrepentant. Which one did the will of the father? The parable of the wicked vinedresser speaks to the love of the God, that would send prophet after prophet to Israel followed by his own son which would be rejected and killed. The parable was a condemnation of the religious leaders as much as it is a prophetic annotation of the days to come. Matthew 21:23-22:14Mark 11:27-12:12Luke 20:1-19www.messagetokings.com

The water jars, symbols of purification under the old covenant, are filled and transformed into wine, signifying the renewal of the Temple, now present as Christ's Body. But there is more: the servants who fill the jars and serve the wine represent discipleship. Through their obedience, they become participants in the miracle—disciples bearing witness to the glory of God and, in turn, are filled themselves.

Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantslayer@gmail.com Website: www.aegisdefensesolutions.com Insta: My media channels all go to Garth Heckman Text me 30 second interviews of you asking people “whats it take to be a man” Im not a wine or beer connoisseur by any means… I in fact don't like the taste of alcohol at all… but still even outside of that… to learn how to brew beer or grow grapes and make wine… I think I would rather watch paint dry. John 2:1-11 1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. DO you want the supernatural, the miraculous in your life… lets first ask how and then we will ask what it possible. How? A miracle… here is the set up. A request was made… and then obedience. Not for the sake of showing off or a personal need, but rather for a friend that shouldn't have to look bad in the eyes of others. Running out of wine would be like running out of food at your wedding party, oh and the music stops, the lights go off etc… Wine was the symbol of celebration and of joy for the couple… half of your guests weren't served and the other half would have to eat the stale pretzels at the bar… no music, no lights, no dancing, no nothing… not much of a celebration. Thats what no wine meant in this context… But Mary makes a request… and then more than the request itself she looks to the servants and says “do whatever he says”. That is the secret right there… its not the request its doing whatever he says to do after the request is made. How many people miss the miracle not because they lacked the ask… but they lacked the obedience. But when you combine the ask and the obedience… Watch what happens… what the miracle really stood for - as his first miracle - was that he could transcend and supersede all natural, spiritual and physical laws. He could usurp and discard the laws of nature, time, knowledge, agriculture, wisdom, work and networking. What do I mean… well what does it take to produce the best wine ever? - It takes a supreme knowledge. To fully learn winemaking, including both viticulture (grape growing) and enology (wine production), typically takes around 2-3 years through a dedicated program at a university level, which usually involves a bachelor's degree in viticulture and enology, plus years of hands-on experience through internships in a winery; - It takes years of time for grapevines to mature and grow the right grapes. It will take about 8 years for a vineyard to mature to grow a award winning wine. Plus aging the wine in bottles or vats for years more after that. - It takes seasons of sun, rain and harvest… the right conditions for quite a few years in a row. - It takes laws of agriculture with weeding, fertilizer, insect and pest protection. - It took a network of people picking the grapes, crushing the grapes, containing the wine… aging the wine, testing the wine and then getting it to the wedding party. And lets not forget that he miraculously created 180 gallons of the finest wine they had tasted. the master of the banquet was the head server or chief steward who was responsible for the arrangements and execution of a wedding or feast- he has tasted wine for years… he is an expert. Give God your request… obey his commands- not just his written commands, but his still small voice that speaks to you - begin to walk in obedience- and watch him bypass all things that should be stopping it in the natural and the supernatural and watch your life turn miraculous.
The parables of the wineskins and garments by our Messiah are often interpreted to be best understood as out with the old, and in with the new, even replacement theology. We have a different perspective.

When God is doing something new, it requires of us elasticity—a willingness to change. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses our role in breakthroughs. The Bible demonstrates that God's intervention means we get to be part of the change He initiates. Pastor Allen explains Jesus' teaching on this concept. In Luke, Jesus tells us that new wine requires new wineskins—breakthroughs will require transformation on our part. He also shares examples of this in the lives of people like Zechariah, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, and Mary: people who received unexpected invitations that required them to make enormous adjustments. God wants to usher us into His perfect plans. Are we ready to make the necessary changes? Jesus has done so much for us, but we cannot enjoy that until we let go of the old, and embrace the new life Jesus died to give us. Join Joyce today as she shares ways of breaking free from being overly rigid and judgmental.
One of the biggest challenges Christians face is to live a holy life without becoming overly rigid and judgmental with their faith. Today, Joyce discusses the difference between the old covenant law and new covenant grace.
