I vividly remember received Emmas email last year, she told me she suffered with PNA & PND but was ok the road to recovery. She then talks me through her induction and the birth of her son. She admits she didn't feel the rush of love that is spoken about so much but in reality not always felt.I truly appreciate how far Emma brought us into the depts of her depression. I think this honesty is so powerful as I know she isn't alone in her experience. I do want to highlight she shares feeling suicidal thoughts at the height of her depression. As Emma said ‘if anyone is listening, you are worth trying to get better for, always!' In this episode I share my chat with Shauna who talks me through her four pregnancies and three births. The birth of her first son was incredibly tough resulting in a due to the lack of support and communication within the hospital. Her son was birthed with the assistance of a forceps which hugely impacted her postpartum healing process for a number of reasons. Although the care within the hospital was poor, she was supported by a midwife for a number of days when she returned home. This is where she received the TLC she needed to help her establish breastfeeding and start the road to recovery. Shauna also suffered two early pregnancy losses which she shared previously in depth when we chatted on the "Between Us" episode linked. Shauna' second experience was just so beautiful and poles apart from her first, right down to her very first interaction in labour.....the taxi driver!Enjoy! She chats about the reality of an unplanned pregnancy, how she felt sharing her news with her family and how she was supported by the mental health services in the maternity hospital to help her through anxiety. Throughout Erin's story she speaks so fondly of specific people from midwives that supported her at antenatal appointments. A taxi driver that didn't charge her fare and walked her to the door of the hospital. A midwife that stayed with her throughout Jorges birth and another who came to Erin's bedside every two hours to help her feed and just check-in. Delighted to be back in action after a few weeks off. I have so many birth stories to share with you and grateful to each and everyone of you who support the pod here, it's honestly keeps the podcast afloat. In this episode I share my chat with Kathleen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. Kathleen welcomed her first baby, little Charlie, nearly three years ago with the support of some incredible midwives who she speaks so fondly of. She gave birth to Charlie vaginally after being induced at full term. She then goes on to share her twin pregnancy which was thankfully uneventful and the plan was to give birth vaginally. After labouring for some time Kathleen was brought to theatre to bring her babies into the world by C-section . Parts of her story are quite distressing from complications throughout surgery to their care in those early hours.I also really want to highlight that Kathleen did avail of the services of the hospital to help resolve her birth trauma. Thanks to the decision she made to do this she is in a place to revisit these memories. She also lodged a complaint with the hospital wasn't happy with the response so took her complaint further which Is important to highlight. Thanks Kathleen x Hosted on Acast. In this episode I share my two postpartum experiences, each very different. I chat about entering the unknown, motherhood! I share my very first experience from those very early days which were just shocked the shit out of me (no preparation!), being diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 4 months postpartum to pregnancy after loss when Oliver was 12 months old. I then share my second story which was amazing in parts but also blighted with crippling anxiety which was later diagnosed as PNA. I reckon I suffered from PNA with Oliver too but just wasn't aware. I sought help and can honesty say it was one of the kindest things I did for myself, I put myself first and as a result I have gained so much.I then share my constant struggle with deciding to stay as a family of four. I'm super honest here as it's still very raw and hard to process although not as hard as it was. I know many of you are currently at the same phase of life deciding whether or not to close the chapter on pregnancy and adding to your family for a number of reasons, for me it has been the most challenging season yet. I'm so so grateful for my beautiful family! Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jennifer who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son Jimmy. Jen was induced at 37 weeks as they suspected her son was measuring small. Jena water were artificially broken by a midwife, it was then discovered she has chord prolapses. Within moments Jen was on all fours being whisked to theatre for an emergency caesarean birth. Jen woke up soon after feeling her stomach and realising quickly her boy was born. It all happened so quickly, far too quick to process. Jen and her son spent some time in hospital recovering but thankfully both made a full recovery. Jen shares so much more in her story from leaving the hospital without her baby for the first time to processing her experience. Jen recently qualified as a hypnobirthing instructor and is about to embark on her teaching journey. In this weeks episode I share my chat with Aisling (@mellow_mindfulness) who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Olivia. Within this episode you will hear such amazing examples of midwife care. One midwife in particular stood out, she ensured Aisling was cared for when she wasn't receiving the attention she needed. Olivia's birth was such a positive experience and as a someone who meditates Aisling definitely tapped into hypnobirthing tools to help her through labour. Something this amazing midwife did has stayed with me. She knew Aisling is close to her mother who lives in Ireland and couldn't be present due to Covid. The midwife lifted up her mask momentarily, hugged Aisling and said “This is from your mother!” Goosebumps even writing this. https://www.kiwico.com/panda - Code IREBIRTH to avail of 30% off your first order Support the podcast Buy Me a Coffee Patreon
In this weeks episode I share my chat with Kathleen who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. After Kathleen underwent cancer treatment she feared her fertility would be impacted but thankfully she concieved her little boy quite quickly. An uneventful pregnancy took a drastic turn of events as she was diagnosed with Pre-eclampsia. Her little boy was born via Caesarean birth at just 30 weeks weighing under 2kg. Kathleen went on to conceive again and spent a lot of time researching the possibility of pre-eclampsia second time round. She decided the best decision for her and baby was to opt for a Caesarean birth as she noticed returning symptoms such as a severe headache in the very late stages of her pregnancy. She wanted her baby in her arms and she got just that, her little girl! A story many of our premie parents will relate to. Kathleen later mentioned the @irish_neonatal_health_alliance were a huge support to her as a mother to a premie baby. Support the podcast Buy Me a Coffee Patreon
In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jennifer who talks me through her two pregnancies and three births. Jennifers experiences were so different, she felt fearful and a complete lack of control throughout her first labour. In her words she felt defeated after birthing her little girl which is a feeling she carried throughout her transition into early motherhood. Jennifer then shares the moment she discovered she was expecting twins, the shock but also her decision to educate herself as much as possible. She truly gave everything to ensuring she was ready for whatever outcome lay ahead. She birthed her boys vaginally and unmedicated, an incredible birth story! I love Jennifer honesty in this episode. This week I'm sharing my chat with Tjarda who talks me through her journey to motherhood from discovering she was pregnant at 19 to having the most incredible support bringing each of her babes into the world. Tjardas experience in the hospital gave me goosebumps. She was surrounded by women who showed her respect, compassion and love. Her experience with birth the second time around was similar, nothing by support from everyone she was surrounded by. On both occasions she stayed in her postpartum room as much as possible for those 40 days allowing her body to heal and deepen that connection with baby. Again she was supported by her family and community to enable this. A really beautiful episode, I said very little just listened intently. No doubt you will too! In this next episode I share my chat with Brenda who talks me through her two birth experiences and one early pregnancy loss. Brenda's perspective as someone who is hard of hearing is an important listen. She talks me through suffering from what she calls “deaf anxiety” worrying that she will miss her name being called at appointments, can she lip read or can she understand everything she has been told. For this reason along with others she opted for homebirths with both of her babes. She received incredible support from her homebirth midwife when she was transferred to hospital on her first baby but unfortunately due to restrictions the same midwife couldn't be present when she was transferred with her second. Her husband was by her side through each labour and birth. She shares so much more in this episode too including her breastfeeding journey and suffering early pregnancy loss. Months ago I tried to transcribe all past episodes to ensure the deaf community could enjoy each of your stories, this episode has lit a fire under me. In this weeks episode I share my chat with Sinead, this is a long episode but I found it hard to edit any of our chat as I felt each stage of her journey to motherhood was so important to hear. She was diagnosed with endometriosis after years of excruciating periods and uncomfortable situations. When the time felt right, Sinead along with the support of her fertility doctor discovered she was pregnant. Many highs and lows were to follow! Her labour and birth story is certainly not linear. She met some incredibly support people who she remembers fondly and most definitely aided in helping her through a particularly difficult experience. Unfortunately she encountered others that are etched in her memory for the wrong reasons. This episode is hard to listen to in places but there is also lots of laughter in there too. In this next episode I share my chat with Yasmine who talks me through her two very different birth experiences. Yasmines experience in hospital birthing her little girl wasn't one where she felt very supported for various reasons. Her little girl arrived into the world making her presence known with her cry but Yasmine didn't feel that immediate rush of love. She was exhausted, unsure as to what just happened and needed some tlc which she received when they returned to the comfort of their own bed. 18 months later Yasmine felt she was ready to add to their family once again. We then chat about her second pregnancy which was similar to her first in terms on sickness in the early months. Mairead once again decided to have her baby at home and talks me through her sons birth. She suffered a prolapse after her first baby which caused her distress. This time we chat about life after each baby especially the expectation we have before our first born comes into the world. Sinead shares how she coped each day, accepting that some days (most) you just do what you need whatever is necessary in order to get through the haze. She also shares how she felt retuning to work in the early days versus her decision to utilise childcare after her fourth baby to really lean into that fourth trimester. If you would like to hear more episodes like this bonus chat please get in touch and let me know. Our Monday birth stories are a permanent fixture but I would love to hear your feedback on this one.
In this next episode I share my chat with @fairy.quad.mother who talks me through the loss of her first son Dylan, coping with grief, the overwhelming need to get pregnant once again and the spontaneous conception of her quadruplet's. The first 20 mins of our chat is incredibly tough to hear as Lorraine shares the loss of her son Dylan. Within the episode intro I will give you the exact moment to tune in if you aren't in a place to listen to such heartbreaking story. In saying this, I know Lorraine opening up will bring comfort to others who have suffered such profound grief. We then chat about the spontaneous conception of her four babes. Lorraine discovered she was growing two boys and two girls who were perfectly happy inside their mums tummy until the end of the second trimester. They arrived into the world via Caesarean birth welcomed by a room of 32 very excited medical professionals all wanting to be present for such an amazing moment. To think Lorraine's body grew four babies simultaneously, four hearts, four beautiful minds and obviously I have to mention four gorgeous placentas. Just wow!! https://feileacain.ie https://alittlelifetime.ie https://pregnancyandinfantloss.ie/support-links/ Support the podcast https://www.patreon.com/irelandsbirthstories
In this next episode I share my chat with Brana who talks me through the birth of her little girl Evie and her very recent pregnancy loss. After undergoing testing due to concerns following a routine 12 week scan, Brana and Ross received the news that their little girl had Trisomy 21 also known as Down Syndrome. She shares much more surrounding Evie's diagnosis which I know many other parents can relate too. Brana then chats through her induction and the decision to bring Evie into the world via emergency caesarean birth. We chat about the early weeks of Evie's life and how as partners and parents Brana and Ross support one another. We then chat about pregnancy loss at 10 weeks gestation. Brana mentions this pregnancy “kept us warm” throughout an incredibly tough period of Evie's life. She also shares some special moments after losing their Bear which I will let you hear for yourself (last picture
In this next episode I share my chat with Pam, Phil and of course the star of the show Teddy. Pam shares many aspects of her pregnancy from coping with pregnancy after loss (EP40 Pam shared her previous birth experiences) gestational diabetes, extensive preparation
In this next episode I share my chat with Amy who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her son Cooper. Amy read books, attended classes, watched YouTube videos and listened to podcasts as part of her preparation for birth and motherhood. She spent time educating herself to ensure she knew the risks and benefits of various interventions. Amy shares her positive induction story and the moment her son Cooper came into the world. Twelve days later everything changed Amy and her husband rushed Cooper to hospital after reacting to a gut feeling. Cooper was diagnosed with Meningitis, thankfully he made a full recovery after two weeks in hospital. From her level of preparation, ability to adapt to change and confidence in her decisions as mother to her son at such an early stage, I just think Amy's story is amazing!
In this weeks episode I share my chat with Jill who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Charlotte. Jill really had to focus on tracking her ovulation, the ovulation sticks (as with many of you) weren't helping her much so she focused on natural indicators too. She put a lot of time into preparation and stayed active throughout her pregnancy including teaching yoga. I think an important part of Jill's story is where she chats about passing her estimated due date and just wanting to meet her baby. Although this is the case for all of us, some of us find those last few weeks incredibly hard. Getting to the stage where you wonder if you will ever meet your baby is a real thing, I felt it!! Of course, little Charlotte was born Jill finally got to meet her daughter Enjoy & thanks Jill ❤️ https://www.irelandsbirthstories.ie Support the podcast - Patreon Support the podcast - Buymeacoffee This week I'm supporting Petrina founder of @mamasboobiebox A breastfeeding gifts and products business. In this episode I share my chat with Aisling who talks me through her two pregnancies and births. I recently asked if you wanted me to keep conversations surrounding early motherhood in the podcast and there was a resounding yes! I have done just that with this episode, I know so many of you will relate to some if not all of what Aisling speaks about. She chats about the initial overwhelm when discovering she was pregnant, her preparation for birth, her experiences (so similar but different in many ways), early motherhood, breastfeeding and much more. Honestly, I just sat back drinking a cup of and listened to her speak. So relatable, as I say in the podcast there will be heads nodding away on Monday morning as you hear Aisling's episode. Enjoy & thanks again Aisling ❤️ https://www.irelandsbirthstories.ie Support the podcast - Patreon Support the podcast - Buymeacoffee This weeks SME shoutout is to @feed.me.mother Founder Fiona created a sustainable breastfeeding brand after finding it difficult to source fashionable and comfortable clothing throughout her own experiences with her babies. In this next episode I share my chat with Jane who talks me through her two pregnancy's and births. Jane's first baby was brought into the world via emergency c-section as she went into labour at 32 weeks. She thought she could feel a cord prolapse but infact it was her little boys foot! Her second baby also came into the world early at 36 weeks but thankfully she had an experience much closer to what she hoped for, a vaginal birth. She shares her struggles with breastfeeding which led to her recently qualifying as an IBCLC which I personally think is amazing. Thank you for sharing your story @bainne.mama and congratulations on passing those exams! This weeks SME shoutout is @cailiekins Cailiekins is a new family run business. It is run by 2 sisters, Jenny and Jackie, from Mayo. They are focused on creating high quality products for baby and beyond. In this next episode I chat to Nicola who talks me through her spontaneous triplet pregnancy. Nicola and her husband attended an early scan when they discovered they were expecting twins, they left that appointment shocked as many of us would. They later attended their hospital scan around the 3 month mark when they saw a third little one on the monitor. So much changed from that moment on! Nicola was monitored closely in hospital from the latter stages of her second trimester. Thankfully her three babes arrived safely into the world via Caesarean birth after an uncomplicated pregnancy that was initially uncertain. This episode is the first of many I will be asking my guest to chat further about their postpartum experience. Everything Nicola shares will relate to each of you from sleep deprivation, the fog lifting and much more https://www.irelandsbirthstories.ie https://www.patreon.com/irelandsbirthstories https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Corahgernon
EP92 - Jo & Katie, IVF, Doula Support, Induction, Unmedicated Positive Birth In this next episode I share my chat with Jo and her wife Katie. I love chatting with couples, watching their faces as they speak about one of the most significant milestones in their lives is pretty special. I wanted to speak to a same sex couple for so long, the wait was so worth it. This is such an important conversation and demonstrates becoming parents as an LGBT couple is possible. They chat about making the decision to become parents, their IVF journey, pregnancy and Sonny's incredible birth. Together they invested so much time preparing for this huge life event that was ahead of them, the birth of their baby. From hypnobirthing, breastfeeding classes, inviting @pamjdpilatesdoula to support them, acupuncture, books and YouTube videos, they left no stone unturned. In this next episode I share my chat with Laura who talks me through her two experiences with birth. Laura not only shares her two birth stories but she also chats about other aspects of early motherhood and pregnancy too. The birth of her first little girl definitely wasn't what Laura expected which she feels contributed to some tough moments as a first time mother. Laura was diagnosed with pregnancy depression while expecting her second baby. She chats about her symptoms, support and how “the lights were turned back on” as a result of receiving the right treatment. Laura was also supported by Jen Crawford Co-founder of @doulacareireland who was at the end of the phone anytime she needed. She changed her mindset, used the BRAIN acronym and told herself she would enjoy this Laura's daughter was admitted to NICU after a diagnosis of sepsis and a urinary infection. She talks us through those first few days, her stay in NICU and when they eventually took her home. Thank you Laura for sharing as much as you did ❤️ This episode has been brought to you by @waterfulbabywipesWaterful plastic free baby wipes contain 99.9% purified water and are both fragrance free and alcohol free. In this next episode I share my chat with Katie who talks me through her journey to motherhood. Katie suffered loss, experienced trauma due to an emergency caesarean birth, underwent two positive elective caesarean births and received a PCOS diagnosis. There is so much more in Katie's story but I will let her tell you everything in between from being admitted to hospital for 6 weeks whilst pregnant with her first boy, each of her breastfeeding journeys and constant issues with her blood pressure. Katie also shares that although her first baby is aged 7, she is only now recognising how traumatic his birth was and has sought the help of a councllor who helped her realised this. Another message within this weeks episode for those of you that might need to hear it. Thank you Katie!
