In this powerful episode, I sit down with somatic educator and STREAM founder Ellen Heed to explore a topic often overlooked in healthcare—scar tissue. Far from being a minor footnote in our healing journey, scar tissue can hold physical, emotional, and energetic imprints that shape our relationship with our bodies.Ellen shares her vast knowledge from decades of work in somatics, anatomy, sexology, and trauma-informed care. We speak about the silent impact of unaddressed scar tissue after birth—be it episiotomy, cesarean, or internal tearing—and how we can begin to re-establish trust and intimacy with our bodies. In this conversation, we cover:Why scar tissue is a foundational pillar of healthThe long-term impact of unacknowledged trauma and birth interventionsThe body's innate intelligence and the importance of uninterrupted healing timeCastor oil as a gentle and effective anti-inflammatory supportCervical scar tissue and its link to interventions like the morning-after pillHow media and pornography shape distorted views of the body and sexualityReclaiming the uniqueness of our bodies through curiosity and touchWhy vagus nerve awareness is essential in trauma resolutionThe need to move beyond reductionist models of healthcareIf you're a birth worker, bodyworker, sex educator—or simply someone wanting to feel more at home in your body—this is a conversation not to miss.✨ Learn more about Ellen's STREAM Certification for practitioners here: www.scartissueremediation.com/stream-certification@EllenheedConnect with Danielle

She pushed back on induction, trusting that her baby would come when ready. Within 48 hours she was in labour. She shares with us the many ways she was able to find comfort during a long labour. Her breath being the key tool. During the second stage, her carers were wanting to give her an episiotomy and she refused, preferring to trust the intelligence of her body to tear. But Alice found love again, and had a second chance at birth. This time, she chose a home birth with a midwife, which is a completely free and underutilized option within the UK's NHS system.  She had her second child peacefully, at home, with just her partner and the midwife. She also started listening to the podcast and soon realised she had the opportunity to learn a whole new vocabulary and get educated about birth, an experience that can be positive and empowering. She went into spontaneous labour and spent most of her labour at home before transferring to the birth centre. In today's episode, we had the privilege of interviewing Deannah who shares her journey through three unique birth experiences. Deannah's first two births were within the MGP program, where she faced challenges such as unwanted interventions and unfamiliar midwives during the birth of her first baby. She discusses how she realised she suffered from postnatal depression (PND), postnatal anxiety (PNA), and postpartum rage (PPR)following her first birth. In her second pregnancy, Deannah took a proactive approach by researching and securing the support of a known midwife who respected her wishes for a hands-off approach during labour, despite experiencing a postpartum haemorrhage. Upon relocating to NSW, Deannah encountered limited options for care models due to her location, prompting her to carefully consider her choice of care provider, especially given her higher risk of postpartum haemorrhage. Ultimately, Deannah opted for a private midwife for her third birth, which took place at home. The skilled midwife's expertise proved invaluable as she effectively managed Deannah's postpartum haemorrhage in the comfort of her own home. In today's episode, we had the honour of speaking with Courtney, who shared with us her personal journey through two contrasting birth experiences, her role as a doula, and the challenges of managing her own business while caring for her young children. Courtney opened up about her experience with prolapse following her first birth, shedding light on a topic often shrouded in silence.Raised in a belief system that painted birth as a traumatic event, Courtney's story is a testament to the transformative power of self-discovery and research. Through her exploration, she discovered the profound truth that birth can be a beautiful and empowering experience, leading her to make informed choices for her two births. Our conversation delved into the pivotal role of care providers in shaping the birthing experience, contrasting the unwanted interventions in a birth centre setting with the intentional decision to have a homebirth for her second child. Gen shares every aspect of her fertility, pregnancy and birth experience in this honest and hilarious episode. She tried to conceive for two years and experienced a devastating miscarriage before deciding to start IVF with her husband, Michael. Gen is a type-A personality and admits she loved the structure of fertility treatment. She opted for private obstetric care alongside support from a psychologist who helped her navigate the anxiety of her first trimester and the inherent challenges of a pregnancy after infertility and loss. Gen refers to her birth preference list as a ‘choose your own adventure' but nothing could have prepared her for the intensity of an induction and a failed epidural. She admits that while her labour was incredibly challenging, her birth was very positive but even so, it took her days to feel any love for her newborn. ---------- Today's episode is brought to you by Kiwi.co. It's so important to talk about these experiences because studies show that up to 40 percent of mothers don't feel love for their baby at birth (instead, it grows and develops over time). When your skin is stretching during birth, it can tear. It is common for first-time mothers to have some tearing during vaginal birth, and there is also the possibility that you could have an episiotomy, which is a surgical incision. The good news is that you can do some things to prevent this leading up to and during your labor and birth. I know this can sound scary, but it shouldn't be. The benefits of a vaginal delivery far outweigh the downside of a tear or an episiotomy. Remember that some women make it through a vaginal birth without tearing, so it is not unavoidable. If you do end up with a tear or incision, there is a lot you can do to make yourself more comfortable, give yourself some relief, and help your body heal afterward.     Thank you to our sponsors   15% off DockATot with the code PREGNANCYPODCAST.
