Welcome to the 'Gina Gardiner & Friends Show' - this episode features my guest, Rachel Walker Mason whose theme was 'Recovering from Post Natal Depression'.
Dr. Briana Chen is a postdoctoral neuroscientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she researches sex differences in stress resistance and psychiatric disorders. Briana is particularly interested in developing sex-specific treatments for depression, anxiety, and PTSD. She won numerous awards for her scientific work and was included in Forbes 2023 list of 30 under 30. Briana shares her Chinese mom May's lessons on the value of education, continuous learning, and curiosity about the world; about how important it is to question things and to always try understanding the “why” – as Briana explained, this helps her to find motivation for her scientific work and for pursuing grants and awards for her research. Finally, we learn about giving back – for Briana, it meant using her research to support those who are often overseen by the scientific and medical establishment – in her case, women. In this deeply personal episode, I open up about my experience with postnatal depression - one of the hardest and loneliest times of my life. I’ll never forget the way I was treated postpartum, and looking back, I realize how little awareness there was around me about what I was going through. This conversation is raw and real, because it’s something we need to talk about more. So many new mums struggle in silence, and I know firsthand how isolating it can feel when those around you don’t understand. That’s why I’m now so passionate about raising awareness, breaking the stigma, and making sure no mother feels unseen or unheard. If you’re a new mum, know someone who is, or just want to understand postnatal mental health better - this episode is for you. Let’s change the conversation and make sure no mother goes through this alone Join my online group healing 13/3/25 here: https://linktr.ee/davinarankin?utm_source=linktree_admin_share See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

According to the National Health Service, around 1 in 7 women develop postnatal depression which is becoming more prevalent. In today's episode of Sisters on Air we will explore the stigma of mental health related issues during the postnatal period. What factors can trigger postnatal depression? How does postnatal depression affect motherhood and family dynamics? What can be done to manage this, on a personal and interprofessional level? As we discuss these points, we will also highlight the importance of reaching out for support, referencing Islamic guidance.
Send us a textIs the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) Failing Mothers? What Providers Need to KnowPostpartum depression screenings are essential—but are we actually identifying the mothers who need help? The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is the standard tool used in postpartum mental health screenings worldwide. But here's the hard truth: it's not catching every mom who's struggling. In this episode, we break down why the EPDS falls short and what providers must do to bridge the gap between a screening tool and real, effective postpartum mental health care. We dive into why mothers feel unseen and unheard in postpartum appointments, the danger of reducing depression screenings to a checklist, and most importantly, how we as providers can do better. Adam is joined by guest hypnotist Rosie Callaghan on how hypnosis can be effective to help people lose weight by working with the emotions and the unconscious. Adam and Rosie will both be presenting at the Irish Hypnotherapy Conference in Dublin in April - tickets can be purchased here: https://irishhypnotherapyconference.ie/ Rosie's Links: http://www.johnstowntherapy.com/rosie-callaghan/ https://www.weightlossclinic.ie/meet-our-hypnoslim-therapists/ Info about Rosie: Rosie is originally from Killybegs, Co. Donegal. She is a mother of 2 and has vast experience working with young people both in the clinic and also as a Music Teacher before becoming a Clinical Hypnotherapist. Rosie spent 2 years helping her Canadian clients reprogramme their minds at her Ontario Hypnosis Clinic before coming back to Cabinteely in 2020. Rosie is very passionate about working with young people and their mental health. She believes that by working out their mental health problems early, whether they be depression, anxiety or weight issues, they will be able to experience their teenage years positively instead of fighting them and ultimately having to change things later in life. Clearing their heads of negative thoughts when they are young, will encourage them to reach for the stars and achieve the absolute best version of themselves and not wonder later “If only I was happy when I was young and had the confidence to do X, Y and Z.” Rosie has vast experience working with clients both in Canada and Ireland with PTSD, Post Natal Depression, Anxiety, Sexual abuse victims, Smokers, Weight Loss, Tinnitus, Insomnia and many more. Rosie specialises in Weight Loss, Anxiety and Depression. She is the owner of Irish Hypnosis Cabinteely and the Weight Loss Clinic. She has a strong passion for helping people. She is also a professional singer with experience of performing as a soloist with large Orchestras in Canada and in front of large numbers of people and she can help you get the confidence you need to perform on your instrument as she understands how the fear of negative judgment from others can hold people back from performing to their best ability. She can help you reprogramme your subconscious mind to not be worrying about what other people think as you perform and therefore allowing yourself to be the best musician and performer you can be. The birth of a child is completely overwhelming, in every way. What gets you through is your newfound love and connection. Right? But what happens when your heart doesn't break open with love? What happens when you don't feel what you're meant to be feeling? Jack Post is a pillar of Australian radio. Cackling Jack of Hamish and Andy, Side-Kick of the Christian O'Connell Show, Jack has worked hard to always be in the right place at the right time. In this Vulnerabilitea House, Jack is so remarkably honest about his experience with post-natal depression. The shame, the unbearable expectation, the support, and the newfound self-love, Jack shares his journey and the hard work that he has done to get here. From being ‘canceled', to alcoholism and post-natal depression, Yumi Stynes knows how to get vulnerable in the Vulnerabilitea House. Starting as a magnetic, music presenter on Channel V, Yumi's career spans more than 20 years on our screens, on the radio, or in the very successful books she's written. However as she shares with Hugh, Ryan and Josh, there were times when the phone simply didn't ring and her career felt like it was at a stand-still. In this episode, Yumi shares stories from her childhood, from feelings of isolation; to being the victim of racism in 1980s Swan Hill; we discuss the loss of her father and how that experience shaped her perspective on life; to what it was actually like being 'cancelled' and the role friendship played in her lowest moments; above all, Yumi tells us of her struggles with alcohol, and how her decision to quit transformed her life. So buckle up for a big one! We know you'll love this chat as much as we did!

Content advisory: this episode contains themes of suicide and self-harm Joining Dr Louise on this week's podcast is Wendy Barker. Wendy experienced postnatal depression after the birth of her first child in the late 80s and was later diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a very severe form of premenstrual syndrome. ‘For probably three weeks of the month, I was like a coiled spring,' Wendy recalls. ‘And the only way that I would get anything sort of relief from that would be to either rage, scream, shout, and then there'd be the tears. And then I would think that's it until it starts all over again.' Wendy movingly describes the impact of PMDD on her physical and mental health and her relationship with her family, her fight for a diagnosis and ongoing access to treatment, plus her advice for others in similar situations. You can find more information about PMDD in Dr Louise's book, the Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause. And you can listen back to episode 216 of the podcast with Dr Hannah Ward on progesterone, PMDD, postnatal depression and menopause. Click here for more information on Newson Health. Welcome to the twenty-third episode of Talk Spirit To Me. This week Jess welcomed Cortnie Kemp to the podcast. On this episode Cortnie shares her postnatal depression journey and how she turned her life around through mind-body connection. She explains the positive health benefits of breathwork & fire and ice, and shares her tips on how we can enhance our own mind-body-soul connection. Cortnie is a Somatic Practitioner & Sacred Union Facilitator, Breathwork Coach, and Contrast Therapy Instructor. She created her business, Elements of Wellbeing, through her journey into motherhood. She was an overwhelmed, stressed-out mum, crippled with postnatal depression. She tried all the things: high-intensity exercise, yoga, meditation, gratitude, medications. Nothing was working. Something was missing. She discovered Sacred Union and Integrative Movement, and it changed her whole perception of herself and her life. It helped her move through her postnatal depression and bring that mind-body connection that she was missing. It's something we aren't taught, but it's so important. She is dedicated to guiding women into a deeper sense of self-empowerment through all the elements that have helped her. Her mission is to create a warm and nurturing space where you can unwind, breathe, and rediscover the wisdom within your own body. Make sure you listen until the end for our segment “Jade's Questions”, where Jess throws the most RANDOM hilarious questions at Cortnie.
