Barbara Nantais in 1978 and Claire Hough in 1984, though separated by 6 years, were both found brutally murdered and within yards of the same spot at Torrey Pines Beach. The cases are eerily similar but no clear link to the two leave many questions still waiting for answers. Today we're talking about boys—the messages they receive about emotions, strength, masculinity, and what it means to “be a man” in today's world. My guest is Dr. Katie Hurley, a child and adolescent psychotherapist, parenting educator, and Vice President of Community Initiatives for The Jed Foundation, a nonprofit focused on youth mental health and suicide prevention. Katie is the author of several books on kids' and teens' mental health, and her newest release, Breaking the Boy Code, takes a deep look at the societal pressures shaping boys' emotional lives. In our conversation, Katie and I explore how traditional expectations around masculinity can impact boys' mental health, emotional expression, and relationships. We talk about the unique pressures boys are facing today, what can happen when emotions get pushed underground, and practical ways parents can support boys in developing emotional awareness, resilience, and a healthier sense of self. About Dr. Katie Hurley Dr. Katie Hurley is a child and adolescent psychotherapist, parenting educator, public speaker, and writer, and is the Vice President of Community Initiatives for The Jed Foundation (JED), a nonprofit dedicated to youth and young adult mental health and suicide prevention. She is the author of the award-winning No More Mean Girls: The Secret to Raising Strong, Confident, and Compassionate Girls, The Depression Workbook for Teens: Tools to Improve Your Mood, Build Self-Esteem, and Stay Motivated, The Happy Kid Handbook: How to Raise Joyful Children in a Stressful World, A Year of Positive Thinking for Teens, and her newest book, The Stress-Buster Workbook for Kids. Her newest book is Breaking the Boy Code, which came out in March 2026. Katie covers mental health, child and adolescent development, and parenting for The Washington Post, PBS Parents, Psychology Today, Everyday Health, PsyCom, and US News and World Report, among other places. She splits her time between Los Angeles, California and coastal Connecticut with her husband and two children. Things you'll learn from this episode Why the “Man Box” and traditional messages about masculinity can limit boys' emotional well-being and self-expression How social media, gaming culture, and online spaces can influence boys' identities, including exposure to red pill and incel ideologies Why open conversations about feelings and mental health are critical for helping boys thrive How practical tools, coping strategies, and supportive school environments can strengthen boys' resilience and self-awareness Why media literacy, positive role models, and inclusive communities help boys navigate today's complex world with greater confidence and authenticity Resources mentioned Breaking the Boy Code: The New Playbook for Raising Resilience Boys by Dr. Katie Hurley Katie Hurley's website Katie Hurley on Facebook Katie Hurley on Instagram Katie Hurley on Twitter Teen Talk / Katie's Facebook Group for Parents of Teens Katie's Facebook Group for Parents of younger children The Stress-Buster Workbook for Kids by Katie Hurley A Year of Positive Thinking for Teens by Katie Hurley The Happy Kid Handbook: How to Raise Joyful Children in a Stressful World by Katie Hurley The Depression Workbook for Teens: Tools to Improve Your Mood, Build Self-Esteem, and Stay Motivated by Katie Hurley No More Mean Girls: The Secret to Raising Strong, Confident, and Compassionate Girls by Katie Hurley Not familiar with ‘red pill' content? Two women. Two locations forty miles apart. Eight years between discoveries. And forensic anthropology that connected the tool marks on their remains to the same type of instrument — the same characteristics, years apart. This look back examines the forensic thread that ties Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor together in the Rex Heuermann case, and what it reveals about the pattern prosecutors built across the full span of the investigation.Valerie Mack was a Jane Doe for twenty years — found in Manorville in 2000 and along Ocean Parkway in 2011, identified only through genetic genealogy in 2020. Jessica Taylor was twenty years old, found in the same two-location pattern — Manorville in 2003, Ocean Parkway in 2011. A hair on Valerie's remains matched the DNA of Heuermann's family members. A hair on a surgical drape beneath Jessica's remains matched Heuermann's own DNA. The planning document recovered from his computer included preparation notes that prosecutors say matched the condition of both women's remains.Heuermann pleaded guilty to both murders as part of the agreement covering seven victims, and admitted to an eighth. His defense attorney acknowledged that two pre-trial rulings — the admission of DNA evidence and the denial of separate trials — drove the decision to plead. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. Valerie waited twenty years for a name. Jessica was found twice over eight years. The forensic connection between them is where this case's full scope begins to come into focus.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On the morning of the 27th of May 1817, a 20 year old woman named Mary Ashford was found dead in a water-filled pit near the English village of Erdington. She had been at a dance the night before. She had been sexually assaulted before her death. The man last seen with her, a 24 year old named Abraham Thornton, was arrested and acquitted in a trial that would become one of the most controversial in British legal history. Exactly 157 years later, on the morning of the 27th of May 1974, in the same village, the body of another 20 year old woman was discovered. Her name was Barbara Forrest. She had been at a dance the night before. The prime suspect was named Thornton. He too was acquitted. Two unsolved murders. Two centuries apart. In the same English village. Episode Show Notes This week's episode is a special one for me. I'm joined by my good mate Michael, who has just completed his second crossing of the Kokoda Track with me. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Michael first crossed Kokoda 22 years ago at the age of 40, and has now returned at 62 years of age to tackle the challenge once again. This time he brought his son along, alongside a group of mates, colleagues, and their sons, creating an experience that spanned generations. Throughout our conversation, we reflect on the lessons Kokoda continues to teach, not just about resilience and perseverance, but about leadership, teamwork, and personal growth. Michael is the owner and leader of a highly successful business employing around 700 people, so I was particularly interested in hearing his thoughts on leadership in the jungle and how those lessons compare to leadership in the corporate world. We discuss the difference between leadership and management, the importance of clear communication, setting expectations, and creating an environment where people can thrive without being overled. We also explore the unique challenge of returning to Kokoda more than two decades later. Michael shares how his mindset, leadership style, and perspective on hardship have evolved over time, and why stepping outside your comfort zone remains one of the most powerful ways to grow, regardless of your age. One of my favourite parts of the conversation centres around the idea that great leaders don't always need to have all the answers. Sometimes leadership is about staying calm under pressure, trusting your team, and allowing others to have their own experiences rather than trying to control every outcome. Whether you're considering your own Kokoda adventure, leading a team, running a business, raising a family, or simply looking for ways to challenge yourself and grow, I think you'll find plenty of value in this conversation. I hope you enjoy this honest and insightful discussion with a man who has spent a lifetime leading people, learning lessons, and continuing to prove that age is no barrier to growth, adventure, and personal development. In this episode of Got Somme, Carlos and Angus explore the fascinating world of aged wine by tasting two vintages of the Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier — one from 2002 and another from 2022. Together, we uncover how time transforms wine, from its colour and aroma to its structure and flavour. We dive into the importance of wine closures, the art of decanting older bottles, and how visual differences like hue and clarity can reveal a wine’s journey. Through this side-by-side tasting, we reveal how aging develops complexity, showcasing the elegance of well-crafted Shiraz Viognier over two decades. Beyond tasting notes, we'll reflect on their personal connection to the Clonakilla label and its place in the history of Got Somme. Whether you’re a casual drinker or a dedicated collector, this episode celebrates the beauty of aged Australian wine and the passage of time in every bottle. We now compare and maybe contrast the experiences of going through education, employment and life for two Yorkshire blind people 50 years apart with the Rt Hon Lord Blunkett and Holly Tuke. In a recent column in the Yorkshire Post the Right Honourable Lord Blunkett talked openly about the challenges of being blind, something he rarely talks about as he prefers to be defined by his achievements in life and not by the barriers he has had to overcome. Holly Tuke, RNIB's Social Media Manager who has been blind from birth and went through education about 50 years after Lord Blunkett has written a follow up article in The Yorkshire Post talking about some of the challenges she has faced and over come in her life too. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey brought both Lord Blunkett and Holly together to share an insight into their lives as two Yorkshire blind people who may be 50 years apart but possibly very much similar in so many ways. At just nine years old, Jase found himself alone in the frozen woods, turning a childhood scare into his very first survival story—and his first glimpse that God was near. Al and Zach connect that experience to Paul's sermon at Mars Hill in Acts 17, where creation itself testifies to the Creator's closeness. It turns out that both Phil and Missy preached the same message at Mars Hill years apart without knowing it. The guys explore the gnostic belief that our flesh is inherently sinful, and why resurrection hope isn't about escaping the body but God redeeming it. In this episode, we delve into the increasingly visible trend of white supremacy linked to Donald Trump, exploring the unsettling parallels between current events and historical precedents. The discussion begins with a critique of Trump's recent activities, including his symbolic hurricane relief donation and the environmental rollbacks during his presidency. The episode further examines the resurgence of Nazi and white supremacist imagery at Trump rallies, highlighting a recent incident in Florida and a rally in Saginaw, Michigan. These events underscore the growing alignment with fascist ideologies within certain political circles. We also revisit the haunting history of a Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939, drawing chilling comparisons to Trump's planned rally at the same venue. The episode concludes with a call to vigilance against the rise of authoritarianism and the importance of recognizing these dangerous trends in contemporary politics.

May 27th: Mary Ashford and Barbara Forest Killed(1817 and 1974) In a world filled with conspiracy theories, it becomes hard to hear stories about the unexplainable and not wonder if theorists might be right. On May 27th, in 1817 and 1974, two completely unrelated events happened that seemed like history repeating itself. Two cases far too similar to not wonder what other-wordly force could be at play. https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Mary_Ashford_and_Barbara_Forrest, https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/12/05/two-eerily-similar-murders-157-years-apart/76829428/, https://paranorms.com/mary-ashford-barbara-forrest/, https://drhpod.medium.com/the-mirrored-murders-of-mary-ashford-and-barbara-forrest-5584ed9dc604, https://www.grunge.com/236853/the-unsolved-murders-of-mary-ashford-and-barbara-forrest/, https://thoughtnova.com/the-erdington-murders-two-eerily-similar-slayings-157-years-apart, https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-eerie-coincidences-of_b_8682392, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/local-news/from-the-archives-chilling-similarities-of-the-murders-of-two-117606, https://the-line-up.com/erdington-murders-coincidences, https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/cilhcj/the_erdington_murders_two_eerily_similar_murders/ Learn more about your ad choices. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most iconic figures in all of rock music and was a hero to Robert and millions of people. So when Robert recorded his debut album "Miles Behind" in 1994 he decided to include a cover of one of Jimi's songs. He chose to reimagine a “psychedelic jazz” version of Hendrix's classic “Fire”. It features Al Foster from Miles Davis' band on drums plus the amazing Ada Dyer on vocals. Twenty five years later, with his band, Project Grand Slam, Robert decided to re-record “Fire” but in a different style. This new, reimagined version of the song became the band's closing number in concert. This episode features a bit of both versions of “Fire” - the studio version from 1994, and a “live” concert version from 2018 from the “It's Alive!” album, featuring the wonderful Ziarra Washington on vocals. Listen to the passage of time. Over the last six months, we've run two essay contests in The Free Press. The first was for high schoolers; we asked them to write about a problem facing American society—and how to fix it. The second contest was for an older generation—70 years and over—and we asked them to tell a story about an event that shaped their life and helped give them wisdom or a fresh perspective. Today, we are thrilled to bring you the winners of both of those contests. Voices of wisdom exactly 60 years apart. First, you'll hear 17-year-old Ruby LaRocca read her winning essay, “A Constitution for Teenage Happiness.” As you'll hear, her happiness guide involves less phones (in fact, she doesn't own one) and more old books, less TV and more memorizing poems. Ruby is a homeschooled senior. She told us she entered the contest because she believes in our mission of finding “the people—under the radar or in the public eye—who are telling the truth.” Then, you'll hear Michael Tobin—a 77-year-old psychologist living in Israel—read his winning essay, “A Love Song for Deborah.” It is about grappling with his wife's Alzheimer's diagnosis and nearly giving in to despair—until he found the one thing that awakened her. We hope you enjoy today's episode, and that it moves, uplifts, inspires—and all of those other holiday spirit verbs. It sure did for us. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When Katie Hobbs won the governor's race in 2022, she became the first Democrat in 14 years to hold the seat. It also made her the first governor in 14 years to have to deal with a Legislature controlled by the opposite party. As she marks her 100th day in office this week, her achievements and pushbacks are equally noteworthy. At the time of recording, the governor had vetoed 38 bills, and it's expected more vetoes are to come. Hobbs is in familiar company. Nearly two decades ago, when Democrat Janet Napolitano arrived on the Ninth Floor, she was met with similar opposition. When Napolitano won the governor's race in 2002, it had been a dozen years since a Democrat had been in the Arizona governor's seat. She tangled with a Republican Legislature that wasn't willing to embrace her agenda, leading to what became a record-setting number of vetoes from an Arizona governor, a record that Hobbs seems intent on shattering. This week on The Gaggle, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, host Mary Jo Pitzl and guest host Stacey Barchenger, are joined by Dennis Burke, Napolitano's former co-chief of staff. He examined the challenges of presiding over a divided government and how to navigate it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
