In this episode, we delve into the increasingly visible trend of white supremacy linked to Donald Trump, exploring the unsettling parallels between current events and historical precedents. The discussion begins with a critique of Trump's recent activities, including his symbolic hurricane relief donation and the environmental rollbacks during his presidency. The episode further examines the resurgence of Nazi and white supremacist imagery at Trump rallies, highlighting a recent incident in Florida and a rally in Saginaw, Michigan. These events underscore the growing alignment with fascist ideologies within certain political circles. We also revisit the haunting history of a Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939, drawing chilling comparisons to Trump's planned rally at the same venue. The episode concludes with a call to vigilance against the rise of authoritarianism and the importance of recognizing these dangerous trends in contemporary politics.

Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with The Dinosaur's Skin (恐龍的皮) . The Dinosaur's Skin is a mysterious band formed by two dinosaurs “Trex” and “Triceratops”, who hail from the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. Surviving the mass extinction and travelling through a wormhole to modern-day Taipei, they now make songs to mourn their lost friends. Primarily performing in English, The Dinosaur's Skin has caught attention for their unique live performances that captivate the audiences. Their first EP Millions of Years Apart was nominated for Best Vocal Group at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards. The band also represented Taiwan in several showcases in the United States, including Taiwanese Waves at New York's Central Park in 2023 and SXSW Austin this year. AXEAN Festival is the first intraregional music showcase festival in Southeast Asia, and will feature some of the best indie acts from countries including Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines and South Korea. May 27th: Mary Ashford and Barbara Forest Killed(1817 and 1974) In a world filled with conspiracy theories, it becomes hard to hear stories about the unexplainable and not wonder if theorists might be right. On May 27th, in 1817 and 1974, two completely unrelated events happened that seemed like history repeating itself. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most iconic figures in all of rock music and was a hero to Robert and millions of people. So when Robert recorded his debut album "Miles Behind" in 1994 he decided to include a cover of one of Jimi's songs. He chose to reimagine a “psychedelic jazz” version of Hendrix's classic “Fire”. It features Al Foster from Miles Davis' band on drums plus the amazing Ada Dyer on vocals. Twenty five years later, with his band, Project Grand Slam, Robert decided to re-record “Fire” but in a different style. This new, reimagined version of the song became the band's closing number in concert. This episode features a bit of both versions of “Fire” - the studio version from 1994, and a “live” concert version from 2018 from the “It's Alive!” album, featuring the wonderful Ziarra Washington on vocals. Over the last six months, we've run two essay contests in The Free Press. The first was for high schoolers; we asked them to write about a problem facing American society—and how to fix it. The second contest was for an older generation—70 years and over—and we asked them to tell a story about an event that shaped their life and helped give them wisdom or a fresh perspective. Today, we are thrilled to bring you the winners of both of those contests. Voices of wisdom exactly 60 years apart. First, you'll hear 17-year-old Ruby LaRocca read her winning essay, “A Constitution for Teenage Happiness.” As you'll hear, her happiness guide involves less phones (in fact, she doesn't own one) and more old books, less TV and more memorizing poems. Ruby is a homeschooled senior. She told us she entered the contest because she believes in our mission of finding “the people—under the radar or in the public eye—who are telling the truth.” Then, you'll hear Michael Tobin—a 77-year-old psychologist living in Israel—read his winning essay, “A Love Song for Deborah.” It is about grappling with his wife's Alzheimer's diagnosis and nearly giving in to despair—until he found the one thing that awakened her. We hope you enjoy today's episode, and that it moves, uplifts, inspires—and all of those other holiday spirit verbs. It sure did for us. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Are straight people okay? Clearly not, since we're launching into unprompted Star Wars rants in the middle of AAPI Heritage Month. Welcome to a big heckin negative review episode as TJ and Trevor chime in about a genre that is very much not for them: the erotic thriller! Featuring 2007's Lust, Caution, 2022's Decision to Leave, and very much not any Marvel movies, why would you even think that? We take this opportunity to acknowledge why Sandra Oh should be in more things, and that you should never waste a perfectly good Stephanie Hsu. In addition to those universal truths, join us for The Who (or George W. Bush), Tony Leung's ungodly rizz, reading wives for filth, and not thinking straight. Thinking GAY.
When Katie Hobbs won the governor's race in 2022, she became the first Democrat in 14 years to hold the seat. It also made her the first governor in 14 years to have to deal with a Legislature controlled by the opposite party. As she marks her 100th day in office this week, her achievements and pushbacks are equally noteworthy. At the time of recording, the governor had vetoed 38 bills, and it's expected more vetoes are to come. Hobbs is in familiar company. Nearly two decades ago, when Democrat Janet Napolitano arrived on the Ninth Floor, she was met with similar opposition. When Napolitano won the governor's race in 2002, it had been a dozen years since a Democrat had been in the Arizona governor's seat. She tangled with a Republican Legislature that wasn't willing to embrace her agenda, leading to what became a record-setting number of vetoes from an Arizona governor, a record that Hobbs seems intent on shattering. This week on The Gaggle, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, host Mary Jo Pitzl and guest host Stacey Barchenger, are joined by Dennis Burke, Napolitano's former co-chief of staff. He examined the challenges of presiding over a divided government and how to navigate it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It was 15 years ago: police officers flooded C. W. Jefferys Collegiate in northwest Toronto. Outside, hundreds of anxious parents stood waiting for answers. The news that police delivered – as we now know – was tragic.Fifteen-year-old Jordan Manners had been killed. It was the first time anyone had been fatally shot inside a Toronto school. Jordan's death stunned his community and the nation. And for many, it punctured the illusion of safety in Canadian schools.Since then, we've seen a slew of reports and funds directed at anti-violence projects… But youth violence hasn't let up in Toronto, Canada's largest city.In fact, it's getting worse. In the Toronto District School Board, the number of physical assaults has risen by 174 per cent between 2014 and 2019 and the number of incidents involving the use of a weapon by a student has risen by 60 per cent. This year, on Valentine's Day, a student was fatally shot inside a Toronto high school and in October, another shooting happened outside a school. Why is gun violence increasing? And can we slow it down?Devon Jones has spent the past 15 years tackling these very questions. He is a teacher and well-recognized youth worker in the Jane and Finch community - where Jordan Manners was killed. It has been described as Toronto's most dangerous area to be a kid.Devon has seen many students who have lost their lives to violence over the years, including Manners. But he has also saved many lives through programs offered by YAAACE - an organization he founded in 2007 that focuses on basketball and academics. He's a busy man, who had just rushed from dealing with a youth emergency before talking to us from school. One of the former volunteers of Jones's organization is Ardavan Eizadirad. Eizadirad is now the executive director of YAAACE. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University who has written about the root causes of gun violence.Join us on Don't Call Me Resilient as we speak to both Jones and Eizadirad about the rising rates of gun violence in Canada and the role community organizations play in the solution.Follow and ListenYou can listen to or follow Don't Call Me Resilient on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts. Not often does Parkinson's play such a key role in a fictional piece of work, Robyn's journey grounds the book in near-real experiences as she and her characters struggle with the degenerative brain disease.
