In this episode, we delve into the topic of trauma and its impact on pregnancy, birth and beyond. Our guest, Philippa Scott, a mother of four daughters, is a dedicated advocate for better birthing experiences and consumer rights. Her activism was sparked in 2003 after facing challenges with fragmented care and limited information during her first birth. Determined to empower others, she trained as a Doula and founded "Friends of the Birth Centre Townsville" (FBCT) that same year. Serving as president until 2011, she was instrumental in the opening of the three-room Townsville Birth Centre within the Townsville Hospital in 2008. Philippa has also been actively involved in consumer and citizen boards, created media projects, and facilitated free support groups. She chose homebirth for her last two daughters, and witnessing her granddaughter's recent home birth further fuelled her commitment to improving birthing experiences. Through her business Fantastic Futures Philippa supports parents in healing from birth and perinatal trauma, helping them to rewrite the unconscious scripts they pass on. She speaks on the podcast about TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process Therapy) Philippa's dedication to improving birthing experiences extends beyond her family. Welcome back to another episode of The Mama Village podcast! I'm your host, Ellen, and today, we have a special guest, Kerri, who will share her unique and empowering journey. In this episode, Kerri takes us through her incredible experience of conscious conception and wild pregnancy. She made lifestyle choices over the past decade to prepare her body for this journey, opting for minimal medical intervention with no tests or scans, relying instead on her intuition and some blood work to guide her. Kerri chose to birth at home with a birth consultant, and her pregnancy was a wonderful, intuitively led journey. She was open to medical assistance but consistently felt in tune with her body and declined unnecessary interventions. We'll also delve into the beautiful family blessing Kerri had in place of a traditional baby shower, where men shared important memories with their fathers, women shared their own meaningful stories, and friends expressed admiration for Kerri's trust in her body. Throughout the episode, Kerri opens up about exploring alternative ways to experience pregnancy and birth, such as naturopathy, and planting the seeds for others to consider these paths. She also shares her experiences with two surgeries for endometriosis and the intensity of postpartum pains while breastfeeding. Kerri's story sheds light on the postpartum period, including feelings of loneliness and the delicate balance of needing space yet also needing support. She discusses the importance of trusting relationships with others and oneself, the necessity of setting boundaries with visitors, and the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with your partner through it all. Today, we're delving into a universal experience: the challenge of control. Have you ever wondered why it can be so hard to let things organically happen? Or questioned what it is that's behind the desire to control in the first place? As much as it would be fabulous to control everything, it simply isn't possible. And, you guessed it; this rings especially true in pregnancy and parenthood.  Today on Yoga| Birth| Babies, I have with me Dr. Britta Bushnell to have this conversation. Britta is the author of Transformed by Birth, a childbirth educator, a mentor to other birth professionals, and a now 3rd-time guest on this podcast! Throughout this conversation, we dive into the ins and outs of control: why we want it, how we try to get it, how it shows up as we prepare for pregnancy and beyond, and whether or not it actually serves us to have it. Furthermore, we explore the idea of how to stoke the curiosity of something without trying to manage it in a certain way. We have A LOT of pregnant clients in our office right now, it's honestly crazy. Many of these women have diagnosed autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's or Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some of them have "undiagnosed autoimmunity", like positive ANA tests, but they have no "diagnosis" - - yet. Some don't have any autoimmune diagnoses, but they have Lyme disease or mold toxicity.....and yet others with no diagnoses who just came in for management of specific symptoms like migraines, bloating, or anxiety.  There is no special "formula" for pregnant women with autoimmunity - - we want to make sure you aren't deficient on any vitamins, minerals, or nutrients, we want to avoid toxins, we want to eat anti-inflammatory, we want to exercise, we want to minimize stress.......good advice for any pregnant woman. The concern is that autoimmunity is known to flare around pregnancy., often presenting as an increase in inflammatory symptoms postpartum. We don't want that!! This episode is filled with my knowledge and opinions around pregnancy that I have developed over the years of working with pregnant patients as well as my own experiences as a parent. In this episode, I talk about my wife and I's experience(s) with miscarriages, with hospital births vs. home births, with twins vs. singletons, with V or no-V, and our personal decisions and how we made those decisions. I also talk about all the important stuff like prenatal vitamins, genetics, methylation, and more. As always I don't claim to have all the answers, but I hope my expertise, my opinions, and my thought processes help someone as they are trying to make these decisions for themselves, or I hope they help someone have a happier, healthier pregnancy!

Should you do strength training while pregnant?  Today we will talk about strength training for pregnancy, birth and beyond.  This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I believe that strength training can help prepare your body for birth, help you be more comfortable during pregnancy, and help you rehab postpartum.  In this conversation we will discuss common misconceptions about strength training during pregnancy, including safe practices, warning signs and when to return to strength training postpartum.   To dive into this conversation on Yoga| Birth| Babies, we have Nicole Scheitlin.  She is the Founder of Strong Mama Wellness and mom of two. Nicole is a Certified Exercise Physiologist, Pre/Postnatal Fitness Specialist, and Health Coach with over 12 years of experience in the fitness industry. Nicole would like to encourage new parents to think of exercise as a way to support their bodies through their natural changes and move away from seeing exercise as a way to achieve an aesthetic goal.  She would like parents to switch their mindset and view exercise as a powerful way to support their bodies and energy levels through parenthood.  You will get so much out of this conversation! You are going to walk away feeling empowered to exercise and know that this can help prepare you for the path ahead.    Get the most out of each episode by checking out the show notes with links, resources and other related podcasts at: prenatalyogacenter.com  Don't forget to grab your FREE guide, 5 Simple Solutions to the Most Common Pregnancy Pains HERE  If you love what you've been listening to, please leave a rating and review! Hello friends! On this weeks episode, I'm chatting solo about the importance of owning your pregnancy and birth, regardless of age! You're not too young to take full responsibility for your birth, you don't have to wait until you have more experience or be “qualified” for the birth of your dreams. Your body carries the blueprint to birth & motherhood. As women we have a deep desire to birth in freedom and mother the same. Society tells us otherwise. Especially as young women, we're told we don't know what's best to us, our bodies, and our babies. I share about my journey as a teenager being pregnant (13 years ago) & how I navigated through the system, how I desired a natural home birth, but was looked at as ridiculous and ultimately I submitted to the status quo.

Welcome back to the Simplify Birth & Motherhood Podcast where you can get clarity to empower your informed decision making for your pregnancy, birth, in postpartum, and in motherhood. In this episode, we are talking about part 2 in all things homeopathy and how it is a great alternative for use in pregnancy, during childbirth, postpartum, and with our growing family.  I have seasoned mother, homeopathic user, retired midwife, and 10 year Le Leche League leader Jessica Bingaman.    Jessica was often compelled to chart her own course. She chose to birth naturally, nurse longer than the cultural norm, homeschool, and use traditional remedies over Western medicine when possible. Throughout her years she often wished that there was someone to coach her through her alternative choices or just listen while she processed how she would walk through the next stage of her parenting. Jessica turned that desire into a passion to take all that she learned and sometimes struggled to put into practice and use it to support other mamas and their growing families.   Come listen to learn:  What is homeopathy? What does this all include? For some who hasn't used it before, how do you use it and how does it work? What are somethings to keep in mind while using it? What are some common concerns that families have that can cause some hesitation in using homeopathy? Can you use them with other OVC medicine or antibiotics? How is homeopathy used in pregnancy, birth, postpartum, for infants/young/teen/ children for things like nausea, heartburn, headache, pain, cold and flu, allergies, etc. Why do we see homeopathic medicine being used more often in birth environments than others? What can we learn from the use of homeopathic medicine and why homebirth/birth center transfers happen?    Do you have questions about your pregnancy, about childbirth, or about postpartum that you wish to get off your chest and would like to receive answers that can bring some clarity and bring more confidence?    Please email cbecoaching@simplifybirthandmotherhood.com for a FREE 1:1 1-hour coaching session and have it featured on the podcast (because chances are someone else is thinking it too

Today, we're going to talk about the most common symptom of gallstones and natural remedies for gallstones. It turns out that the most common symptom of gallstones is having no symptoms at all. 80% of people with gallstones don't experience any symptoms until the situation worsens. Other symptoms of gallstones or a gallbladder problem: • Pain or tightness under the right ribcage • Pain under the right rhomboid • Pain in the neck that runs up the side of the face • Nausea • Vomiting • Bloating • Belching • Jaundice • Dark urine • Pale stool Gallstones can form when a person has high cholesterol and a lack of bile. Bile helps thin and eliminate cholesterol. A deficiency of bile is the real problem. The gallbladder is an important organ that helps you store and concentrate bile and absorb fat-soluble nutrients. Bile sludge is a common problem that can also cause pain, even when there aren't any stones. Bile sludge can occur at different times but can be a complication after having your gallbladder removed, causing some of the same symptoms that lead you to have surgery. Risk factors for getting gallstones: • Pregnancy • Birth control pills • Obesity • Type-2 diabetes • Liver disease • Constipation • Low folate • Taking PPIs • Consuming a high-carb diet • Consuming a low-fat diet Natural ways to help get rid of gallstones: 1. Take purified bile salts and probiotics 2. Consume salad 3. Use acupressure 4. Decrease your insulin (do intermittent fasting and go on the keto diet)

All things babies! This is your chance to hear from a health expert on topics like infertility, healthy pregnancies, postpartum challenges, unexpected pregnancies and high-needs children.  Starting with emotional stories of Dr. McCauley's legacy and her emotional journey through infertility, this episode really digs deep into all things women's health through pregnancy and postpartum. We discuss the emotional impacts of infertility and some common factors that are often overlooked for mom AND dad, such as diet, work environment and exposure to harmful chemicals. Next, we discuss important things to consider for a healthy pregnancy and Dr. McCauley focuses us in on lifestyle factors.  Pregnant moms need to be mindful of what they eat and drink, of course, but also what they take into their body through their environment. Remember to focus on gratitude and peace! And don't neglect chiropractic care.  As you approach time for labor and delivery, Dr. Nicole shares some great tips to help that go as smoothly as possible, and encourages mamas to know their negotiables and non-negotiables ahead of time. Be sure to communicate those things with your birth partners and care team. Then what about care for mamas after delivery? Dr. McCauley shares very passionately about meeting the needs of moms post-partum in that “fourth trimester”. Hello beautiful ones!  I am so excited to share this month's interview with Lucy Jones with you.  I think it might be one of my favourite episodes ever:  our conversation was so rich and so full of the kinds of things I think we *really* need to be talking about when it comes to matrescence and motherhood.   I started following Lucy in the early days of writing her new book, Matrescence: On the Metamorphosis of Pregnancy, Childbirth and Motherhood.  I was totally captivated by the ecological lens she applied to the transition to motherhood.  It was so much like my own perpsective and experience that I felt I'd found a kindred spirit. Lucy's book is one of the first on the experience of matrescence, and it is a raw and riveting account of her own metamorphosis as well as a cultural critique about modern motherhood. As we near the close of registration for the 2023 Season of MotherSHIFT and The Village, I'm delighted to be able to share this conversation with the many of you who are also walking this path of matrescence and matrescence-support.   Here's some of what Lucy and I talk about in this episode: > The rarely spoken-of and yet increasingly common ecological awakening that so many new mothers have – and Lucy's personal experience of leaning into her relationship with the living world as she traversed her own matrescence. > The things no one ever fucking told us about motherhood, including the societal expectations of motherhood versus the realities so many of us face.  We talk about ideologies around birth and mothering and how they deny us the opportunity to feel "normal" in these richly complex and usually paradoxical experiences. > The absence of modern-day rite and ritual to support us through matrescence, and how we must engage in the act of culture creation in order to reclaim these. > How liberal feminism lets mothers down, and how motherhood revolutionizes our relationship with work (and capitalism). > The untapped power of matrescence to radicalize us and poise us to advocate for social change (the biggest FUCK YES of this whole episode!).   I loved this interview so much, and I hope you enjoy tuning in!

Yoga can have a profound impact in a practitioner's life on and off the mat. The care we provide for mothers, helping them to feel seen and supported, not only changes the way they internalize their self worth, but the trajectory of the perceived value they internalize and pass along to their children.   Joining me in this episode is Chanel Porchia-Albert, the founder and Chief Executive Director of Ancient Song Doula Services and activist in the fight for birth equality for all, regardless of race, location, or socio economic status.   Together we'll help all expecting or soon-to-be expecting new parents know more about their options, learn what questions to ask of themselves and their doctors, and what exactly to consider to help them feel most cared for during their pregnancy and birth experience.     I want to hear from you! You've likely heard about birth playlists (you might even be creating one) or maybe you take your baby to a music class. While music can be inspiring and playful for your family, did you know there's also science to show it can help your family bond and even help those dealing with depression. Today on Yoga| Birth | Babies we're going to talk about something near and dear to my heart, Music. It has so many applications for pregnancy, birth, and beyond!  To have this conversation I invited music therapist and singer-songwriter Jamie Bendell onto today's episode. Jamie has some amazing ideas and input and is so passionate about this topic. She also shares the scientific benefits of how music can help you and your family during this phase of life. As a former performer and singer it is so near and dear and just something that resonates with me so deeply. I'm incredibly excited for you to hear this conversation.
