"The Trade Market!" The Philadelphia Eagles surprised many with their trade for Chicago Bears pass-rusher Robert Quinn on Wednesday, but few were hit as hard as Quinn's teammate Roquan Smith. Smith had been speaking with reporters when he was told the veteran had been traded. After being asked for his opinion on Quinn's three-year tenure in Chicago, Smith struggled for words before requesting a moment to gather his thoughts. The news conference eventually ended with a tearful Smith, who has seen his trade rumors (and demands), putting his head in his T-shirt, then walking away. Alex Leatherwood may be out in Vegas, according to Eric, and the guys asked what it would take for the Steelers to make something happen there. He doesn't think Leatherwood gets cut, but a trade could be out there. The guys ran through a few others on the offensive line. Back to the Rudolph talk – Eric thinks Seattle and Cleveland could be two teams interested in the Steelers backup QB.

Where do the Raptors find themselves in the conversations? Have they made their best offer to Brooklyn? And how motivated are they to go all-in for Durant when the prospect of internal development is still very much on the table. Next, Sean chats with Jake about the challenge of getting information out of a team like the Raptors that doesn't leak much, and why they are known to be one of the more busy teams in trade talks around the league. In Episode 254 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Jared Dillian, editor of The Daily Dirtnap, a financial newsletter for professional investors focused on gauging market sentiment and how to capitalize on it. Dillian is also the author of two very successful books on Wall Street and investing and is the host of the Be Smart podcast, where he talks to his listeners about everything from how to sort out their personal finances to how to approach trading and investing in the stock market and everything in between. This conversation is yet another in a series of episodes that we've been doing focused on how to navigate the transition in market regimes and all of the challenges that this transition presents for our assumptions about markets and the world at large. Jared is the perfect person to speak to about this not just because of his focus on sentiment, but because he really is someone who stands apart. He's a contrarian in the purest sense of that word and during a time when many of the people we've had on this podcast increasingly seem to share similar perspectives on the future path of interest rates, inflation, and energy prices, bringing on someone like Jared is a way of holding ourselves and our ideas accountable–something that is especially important whenever money or investing are involved. That said, Jared Dillian also has another unique quality which is that he publishes an investment newsletter, which means that he spends an enormous amount of time thinking through his investment ideas in public and that can be very tricky to do while also managing to invest successfully in those ideas, precisely because of how easy it is to become emotionally invested in being right. This is something that you will see time and time again in the financial news business. Financial commentators and pundits will twist themselves into pretzels trying to align their public statements, personas, and track records with an ever-changing set of market conditions. Therefore, one of the topics that Jared and Demetri discuss is how not to do that and how to know when someone else is doing it. In other words, how to filter through information so that you know who to listen to, what to take from them, and then how to exercise a level of humility in your own investment mindset so that you don't get caught off-sides during a period of time where we think that market conditions and assumptions about risk and allocation will be changing faster than at any point since the great financial crisis. Earlier this week, the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder made a trade that, frankly, impacted the Lakers more than it will either of those teams. Why? Because the transaction basically made it much harder for the Thunder to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Lakers. Were they going to? Probably not, but given how thin the interest in Westbrook is likely to be, any shrinkage in available options is a thing. So Wednesday's trade sending Christian Wood from Houston to Dallas makes a difference to the Lakers, too, because Wood is one of those guys rumored to have been a possibility to move in a trade for Westbrook. Probably not as likely and therefore not as landscape altering, but another potential option chipped away. It reflects just how tricky this is going to be, and why more and more experts are catching up to the hosts of this show, and expecting Westbrook to open the season with the Lakers. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves was featured in a great article by Dan Woike of the LA Times. He was one of the few feel good stories of this season, and this feature won't exactly make you feel worse. So what can he become in the NBA? And how likely is it the Lakers can find a couple more "Austin Reaves" surprises in this season's free agent/draft market? And about that market... you want the good news or the bad news when it comes to available small forwards? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Westbrook market just keeps shrinking. SEGMENT 2: Austin Reaves has a colorful background, and a big chip on his shoulder. SEGMENT 3: The small forward market is laughably thin. Which isn't a big deal, right, since the Lakers need like three of them? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
