The Winter Meetings in Orlando are a hub of baseball activity, and Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff break it all down on the latest edition of the Pipeline Podcast. They begin by discussing the ramifications of the Draft Lottery and Jonathan talks to White Sox scouting director Mike Shirley about his team claiming the No. 1 overall pick. Then they shift their focus to another draft -- the Rule 5 Draft -- and analyze the 13 prospects taken, starting with No. 1 choice R.J. Petit (Tigers to Rockies). After celebrating the annual Scout of the Year winners, they circle back to the Rule 5 Draft with a listener mailbag question. With the impending release of MLB Pipeline's Draft Top 100 just before the Winter Meetings set to start this weekend, Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff have plenty to unpack on the latest Pipeline Podcast. They begin by previewing the Meetings, taking a look at the Draft Lottery and the Rule 5 Draft before discussing which teams have the prospects and motivation to make significant trades. Next, the guys give a sneak peek at the Draft Top 100 by talking about two of the crop's deepest demographics, shortstops (led by clear No. 1 overall prospect Roch Cholowsky of UCLA) and high school left-handers. Which young men should be sent to fight in Vietnam? Amidst a growing public outcry against the biases in the system, the United States instituted a live televised lottery draft on December 1st, 1969. In a sombre spectacle, plexiglass drums and capsules containing birthdates were drawn live on CBS, dictating the order in which men born on that day might be conscripted. Youth delegates participated to symbolize approval from the draftees' generation, but some refused to cooperate; one storming off live on air, others making peace signs or reading out protests during the broadcast. Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how this dystopian ‘Hunger Games' lottery came to be; consider the effect Vietnam the draft had on parenting and college statistics back home; and track their own birthdays to discover when they would have been drafted… Further Reading: • ‘Live From Washington, It's Lottery Night 1969!' In this episode we discuss our impressions of Cooper Flagg, Ryan Nembhard, and Miles Kelly from NBA Summer League. We talk about how well Cooper has handled the aggressive defensive pressure, along with how he impressively bounced back from a lackluster Summer League debut for a 31-point performance against the Spurs in the second game. We talk about how he's an ideal fit for Jason Kidd's transition offense, and how his skill of drawing fouls will help him make an even greater impact in the NBA. We then talk about how while Nembhard and Kelly have had up-and-down performances in Summer League, they both have demonstrated skills valuable in the NBA. Finally, we discuss Mark Cuban's interview with Sirius XM Radio at Summer League and why the Mavs' victory lap after winning the Draft Lottery has been very annoying. This is a public episode. Both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers got great basketball news Wednesday. Auburn Basketball star Tahaad Pettiford officially removed his name from the NBA Draft around 2:00, just hours before the deadline. He will come back to Bruce Pearl’s rebuilt Auburn squad. Alabama’s Labaron Philon surprised many with his 11th hour announcement that he was leaving the NBA Draft and returning to Tuscaloosa for another season. Nate Oats has rebuilt his roster, as well, and Philon is a massive final piece. As Pettiford returns to Auburn, is he a no doubt All-SEC player? Can he work his way into the Draft Lottery? How shocking was the Philon return? Can Alabama win the SEC with this roster? The SEC Meetings are winding down in Destin. Alabama Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer, Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart and Ole Miss Rebels coach Lane Kiffin all spoke out about the College Football Playoffs, as did SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. What the Alabama Football, Georgia Football and Ole Miss Football coaches had to say about the system and what irritates the Commish. The SEC coaches want to play the Big Ten annually, several speak out at the SEC Meetings. What would that do for schedules like the South Carolina Gamecocks who already have and ACC team as a rival? Also, Georgia Football coach Kirby Smart lets us behind the curtain on what is the latest tactic among college football programs in recruiting and what it takes to get a commit. Our Champions Boxing 40-in-40 hits number 29 with Big 12 team the TCU Horned Frogs. Will TCU Football be more 2023 or 2024? Just how good can the Frogs be? Bomani Jones is joined by Tom Haberstroh of Yahoo Sports to discuss the Jayson Tatum injury and NBA lottery results. Bo starts off the show by saying this seems like a career-altering injury for Jayson Tatum (1:17), similar to Derrick Rose, and why we never saw these types of injuries years ago (9:31). Moving onto the NBA lottery results, Bo says if you believe the NBA rigged the lottery for the Dallas Mavericks you're stupid (29:05) and if Cooper Flagg is a star or high end second option (37:27)? Bo and Tom also float the idea of Giannis Antetokounmpo being traded to Dallas for the 1st pick (38:15) and why San Antonio may make the most sense to pair him with Wemby (45:02). They round out the show by asking if the Draft Lottery actually works (58:46) and suggesting an NBA national signing day may be a better option than an NBA Draft? (1:04:36) . . .
