The Trail Blazers intentionally built a roster that can play small and stay small. Even with Jusuf Nurkic in the middle Portland is going to be small on the wings and perhaps aggressively undersized in the second unit. This is what the team built for itself. So will it work? There's reason to believe they've upgraded their defensive personnel and adjusted their defensive scheme enough to where they can be a competent group even without size at the forward spots. They've also stacked the roster with very good rebounding guards allowing for smaller lineups that can still take care of the defensive glass. But even with those upgrades there's reason to be skeptical, right? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

We're talking swing players on the Portland Trail Blazers in today's episode. This isn't the best players on the roster but the player's whose performances bad or good will determine how competitive the Blazers can be this season. First up is Nassir Little, a budding 3-and-D wing that could start at small forward and change Portland's playoff chances with a breakout campaign. Then we have Shaedon Sharpe, the mystery man. If Sharpe struggles as a rookie it likely won't impact the win/loss column too dramatically in Portland, but if he's ready to contribute at a high level in year one then he likely raises the team's ceiling more than anyone else on the roster. Finally, new acquisition Jerami Grant might be the most impactful player on the roster. He's the answer to so many of Portland's challenging matchup questions and if he fits in well he'll solve things quickly. If Grant doesn't fit, the Blazers could end up struggling without many obvious solutions elsewhere on the roster. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Portland Trail Blazers want to be a competitive playoff team this season. But getting there is going to be a challenge. Luckily, one brave podcast has plotted the course for the Blazers to become a top 5 team in a crowded Western Conference. It starts with Damian Lillard playing like Damian Lillard. Then throw in the continued rise of Anfernee Simons and the Blazers have the quick makings of one of the best offenses in the NBA. But the question is on the other side of the court. If the Blazers are going to be a top playoff team they have to be a top 10 defense in the NBA. It's non-negotiable. If they don't check that box, they're likely in the play-in or worse. Finally, Jusuf Nurkic has to be available for 70 or more games and the Blazers commitment to small ball has to work out. The Portland Trail Blazers have two clear bright spots on their summer league roster as second year big man Trendon Watford and rookie Jabari Walker have been the team's two best players and are making a case to get real rotation minutes when the season starts in the fall.
