You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. Psalm 139:5-12 A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. “Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud…” Proverbs 8:1-3 This episode we are talking about finding friends on social media! Social media is the modern day meeting place, the same as the city gate was in ancient times. We will either heed the call of wisdom or listen to the siren song of folly. If we listen to folly, our time on social media will be frivolous and meaningless. But if we listen to wisdom, we will find peace and friendship. So first, choose who you want to learn from. Follow them and listen closely. Second, friendship is in the comment section/at replies. Look for people who are engaging thoughtfully and then pay attention to what they have to say. Third, cast a wide net, while still prioritizing those you want to learn from. The wide net makes you available to those who wouldn't have met you otherwise, and the prioritizing keeps your wisdom follows at the forefront. Fourth, show interest in person. Reply to some stories with some emojis. Reply to an @reply with your own thoughts and start a smaller conversation. Learn the culture of whatever platform you're on and be intentional with non verbal affirmations. You never know who will connect with you. I hope this podcast has given you some ideas for how to make friends, especially if you're in an isolated situation and the internet is your only access to community. Want to connect with a mentor? “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.” Matthew 7:3-5 Conflict & confrontation is an inescapable part of human relationships, and it's important that we get good at it! “And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.” Acts 16:13-14 In this episode, we discuss looking for gathering places of likeminded people and how spending quantity time with other builds quality relationships. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Deuteronomy 5:11 Names are pretty important to God. Here's some ways I remember names: • Say it back to them when you meet • Visualize the face with the name after you leave • Write it down with other names of people in that group so you have a reference (I use Trello for this). • Ask: “Remind me of your name again?” Want to connect with a mentor? “If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?” Matthew 5:47 Being friendly is part of our calling as Christians. • Compliments tell people “I like you.” • Questions tell people “I'm curious about you.” • And statements like “tell me about yourself” open up the floor and tell people “I want to know you.” Im this episode, I referenced: • My Mental Health Video - https://youtu.be/lGRIaTyHDqo • Vanessa Van Edwards Interview with Lewis Howe - https://youtu.be/QqnNqpvO5kQ • And my Broken Friendship video - https://youtu.be/gUFvalTP2AE Want to connect with a mentor? “Therefore in all things, whatever you want people to do for you, so do for them for this is the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12 The five love languages are gifts, words of affirmation, physical touch, quality time, and acts of service. It is important to learn how to love with all of them. Jessica Sowards of Roots and Refuge has a powerful video called “Fluency in Love: He cares about the Cowprint” that tells the story of how God showed her that some of her love languages were broken and how He healed them. https://youtu.be/3XVQXelBK48 I also share the story about how growing up in a logical family helped me to learn to communicate logically and strengthened how I understand and handle my emotions. “We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19 I believe that initiative is the sixth love language. According to this interview with Vaness Van Edwards, the most popular people are those who liked the most people: https://youtu.be/QqnNqpvO5kQ When we are grounded in Christ and we know that we are loved by Him, it becomes natural to show appropriation for others, which is the first step to initiating friendship. First we talk about the OCEAN personality test with it's five spectrums: Openness, Consciousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Then we discuss The Character Diamond which is based upon the spectrum of agreeableness. Want to connect with a mentor? Visit http://inversedream.com/podcast/friendship

When we deal with the small patterns in our life, the way we think about people, and the way we deal with our anger, our relationships become healthier and we find peace. ♡
