Homilies from the National Shrine
Judgment and Mercy: Cooperating with Grace - Fr. Chris Alar | 2/23/26

Homilies from the National Shrine

The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/022326.cfmFather Chris  Alar, MIC reminds us that works do not earn salvation; only God's grace saves (CCC, 1987). Yet the Church teaches that we must co‑operate with that grace. As Fr. Chris explains, each soul faces a particular judgment at death, meeting Christ in His human nature, and later a general judgment when Christ returns to judge all humanity (see Jn 5:22‑23). The Scriptures picture this final assembly in the “valley of Jehoshaphat,” drawn from Joel 3:2, where angels separate the good from the bad.Father Chris contrasts David's flight from Jerusalem with Jesus' deliberate return to be judged, showing that avoidance leads to condemnation while Christ embraces the sacrifice for our redemption. He cites the familiar parable of the wheat and the weeds (Mt 13:24‑30) and the separation of sheep from goats (Mt 25:31‑46) to illustrate the ultimate sorting of souls.A central point is the necessity of Confession. Unconfessed sins are exposed at judgment, whereas confessed sins are sealed (CCC 1451). Father Chris stresses that God's justice is always tempered by mercy: “The greater the sinner, the greater the right he has to My mercy” (Diary of Saint Faustina Kowalska, 723). This mercy flows through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose prayers unite with ours and draw us toward the divine will (CCC 2675).Father Chris also addresses contemporary objections that “Jesus did it all, so there is no hell.” He refutes this by affirming human free will: God's love respects our freedom, and those who freely reject Him choose separation, which is the reality of hell (CCC 1037). As C.S. Lewis observed, “The gates of hell are locked from the inside,” underscoring that the choice belongs to the soul. ★ Support this podcast ★

Why You Can't "Force" Your Healing: From Survival to Safety Are you trying too hard to heal? In the final part of my healing journey trilogy, I reveal a counterintuitive truth: the harder we push, the harder it is for our bodies to recover. Many of us treat healing like a discipline, controlling our diets, pushing through fatigue and demanding results but your body cannot heal while it is in survival mode.In this episode, we explore:The Nervous System: Why safety is a feeling, not a thought. The Wisdom of Symptoms: Decoding the messages behind eczema, thyroid issues, and adrenal burnout.Depression as "Deep Rest": Re-framing mental health struggles as a biological cry for stillness. The Power of Allowing: Shifting from "doing" to "being" to turn off your body's red alert. If you've been your own harshest critic, it's time to stop pushing and start listening. Learn how to cooperate with your body and provide the safety it needs to finally heal.Key Information 00:18 — The Healing Trilogy: Reflecting on the journey from where I was to where I am now.00:39 — The Myth of "Effort": Why trying harder and being more disciplined can actually prevent healing.01:43 — Survival vs. Safety: Understanding that the body heals only when it no longer feels the need to protect itself.02:30 — The Nervous System: Safety is a feeling in the body, not a scientific concept or a logical thought.03:22 — Rest is Not Lazy: Re-framing rest as a necessary form of self-care and a signal of safety to the brain.04:58 — Listening to Body Wisdom: Shifting from looking for external solutions to listening to internal messages.05:16 — Decoding Symptoms: Eczema, Adrenal Fatigue, Thyroid07:05 — Depression as "Deep Rest": A powerful re-framing of depression as the body's desperate cry for stillness.07:46 — Cooperating with the Body: Learning to treat yourself with the same kindness you offer others.08:35 — A Message for Those Still Healing: Why not being "healed yet" isn't a failure, but a learning process for your body.Who am I?Sarah Dawkins is a passionate Holistic Health and Healing Coach, international speaker and author of Heal Yourself. How does game theory work when everyone is a computer program who can read everyone else's source code? This is the problem of 'program equilibria'. In this episode, I talk with Caspar Oesterheld on work he's done on equilibria of programs that simulate each other, and how robust these equilibria are. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/axrpodcast Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/axrpodcast Transcript: https://axrp.net/episode/2026/02/18/episode-49-caspar-oesterheld-program-equilibrium.html Note from Caspar on 2:00:06: At least given my current interpretation of what you say here, my answer is wrong. What actually happens is that we're just back in the uncorrelated case. Basically my simulations will be a simulated repeated game in which everything is correlated _because I feed you my random sequence_ and your simulations will be a repeated game where everything is correlated. Halting works the same as usual. But of course what we end up actually playing will be uncorrelated. The killing of Alex Pretti is different from the earlier death of Renee Good in ways that matter politically and institutionally. The video is clearer, the optics are harsher, and the official response has been far less defensible. In this case, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem immediately claimed Pretti brandished a weapon and intended to inflict maximum harm on officers. There is no evidence to support that claim, and there likely never will be. What should have been a period of restraint and investigation instead became a rush to narrative control. That choice carries consequences. Law enforcement credibility depends on patience and precision, not speed. When leadership declares conclusions before facts are established, it erodes trust not just among critics, but among potential allies. The Minneapolis footage has already become iconography, a moment that redefines how many Americans understand immigration enforcement. This will not fade quickly, and it will not be compartmentalized to one incident.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The DHS Civil War Comes Into the OpenWhat made this whole scene unavoidable is that it landed directly on top of an internal power struggle that has been building for months inside the Department of Homeland Security. On one side are Stephen Miller, Corey Lewandowski, and Kristi Noem, who favor aggressive, street level enforcement driven by visible numbers. On the other is Tom Homan, a hardliner himself, but one who believes deportations at scale require discipline, prioritization, and some measure of public legitimacy. The Minneapolis shooting detonated that fault line. Noem's public statements effectively forced the White House to intervene. Donald Trump responded by dispatching Homan to Minneapolis and opening direct communication with Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey. That is not a coincidence. It is a signal that the White House understands the damage being done and is trying to reassert control through a figure it trusts to stabilize the situation. Whether that effort succeeds depends on whether optics or operations ultimately win inside DHS.Organized Resistance and Local Political RealityAnother element that cannot be ignored is the sophistication of the protests themselves. Groups like ICE Watch were not reacting spontaneously. They were coordinating through encrypted messaging, dividing the city by districts, assigning roles, and establishing rules of engagement. That level of organization changes the risk environment for officers and protesters alike. Obstructing federal officers is a felony, regardless of intent, and these encounters were always going to escalate under those conditions. At the same time, Walz and Frey face their own political bind. Cooperating too closely with federal authorities risks backlash from highly motivated activist groups that have demonstrated an ability to mobilize quickly and aggressively. That tension leaves local leaders squeezed between federal pressure and domestic unrest, a dynamic that makes clean resolutions unlikely.Congress, ICE Funding, and the Shutdown ClockThe legislative consequences are now unavoidable. Senate Democrats are openly stating they cannot support funding bills that continue to finance ICE in its current form. House Republicans moved spending bills forward before the storm, but Senate leadership did not act in time. As of now, a government shutdown by the end of the week looks more likely than not. What makes this moment especially dangerous is that it did not need to escalate this far. With slower messaging, tighter discipline, and less performative leadership, DHS could have contained the damage. Instead, a tragic death has become a defining symbol, one that will stick to this administration through the midterms and beyond. This is the kind of image that reshapes political reality, not for a cycle, but for a generation.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:40 - Minneapolis00:23:23 - Update00:24:15 - Trump's Visit to Iowa00:26:08 - UK Conservatives00:27:24 - Vindman Runs for Senate00:31:41 - Evan Scrimshaw on Canada, Carney, and the Midterms01:04:40 - Steelers Talk01:21:46 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. The case of Celeste Rivas is turning darker by the hour. Major outlets now report that investigators are seeing forensic indicators consistent with cold storage, freezing, long-term concealment, and even possible dismemberment. And yet the person tied to the Tesla where she was found — a car abandoned on a hill — reportedly still hasn't been interviewed. Not questioned. Not sat down. Nothing. That detail alone has sent shockwaves through the true crime world, because if accurate, it suggests investigators are holding their cards tight — and believe something bigger is at play. Tonight, we dig into: — What freezing or refrigeration indicators actually look like. — How investigators can re-date a death by months. — What it means when surveillance shows someone else driving the Tesla. — Why non-cooperation pushes investigators straight into digital forensics. — What multiple-suspect concealment typically looks like behind the scenes. — And what “final stage transport” implies about the car vs the primary location. To help make sense of this, we bring in retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, who walks us through timelines, digital evidence, storage environments, search warrants, and why this case feels far more orchestrated than anyone expected. A fifteen-year-old girl is gone. A digital web is tightening. And investigators are preparing for the next major development — whatever it is. #CelesteRivas #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #CrimeUpdate #FBIAnalysis #TeslaCase #TonyBrueski #Investigation #JusticeForCeleste #CrimePodcast Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this "how-to" episode, we look practically at God's command to Fix your Eyes on Jesus.  Several key questions are addressed.   What does it really mean to fix your eyes on Jesus?  Why is it important?  What happens physically, and spiritually when we look at something?  Why should you fix your eyes on Jesus?  What are the eyes and ears of your heart, and how can you engage them to draw closer to God and find your destined calling?  What do your spiritual senses have to do with your destiny and calling?  Dr. Patty explains three relationships we have with Jesus that are simultaneously true.  She clarifies where can we find each truth in the bible and when is it helpful to see Jesus in these ways? The truths are:  Jesus is IN you, Jesus is WITH you, and you are IN Jesus.  She simplifies how to visualize Him related to these truths, and when and why it helps to see Him in each. Jesus will meet you in the way you most need to experience Him as one of these truths in your Experience Jesus encounter. The Primal Shift

Most conversations about the environment fall into polarized camps — either denial or panic. But living responsibly doesn't have to be political or extreme. In this episode, I take a practical look at what stewardship can look like at home, from how we grow food to how we build, heat, and maintain the spaces we live in.  For our family, that means raising chemical-free produce and livestock, managing soil through regenerative practices, and thinking about proximity so we can walk, bike, and rely less on cars. The result is healthier food, healthier soil and less dependence on the systems that created most of today's environmental problems. We've learned that smaller and simpler often means smarter. A compact, well-insulated home cuts energy use and forces intentional living — less waste, less clutter, and fewer pointless purchases.  The same mindset applies to energy: we combine solar power with conventional fuel instead of pretending one option solves everything. We avoid plastics where possible, use natural materials that last, and work with nature instead of against it. That means embracing weeds where they serve a purpose, using biodiversity instead of monocultures, and letting natural cycles do the work we once tried to control. I also unpack why large-scale mandates, like the EU's plan to ban new fossil-fuel cars by 2035, sound good in theory but overlook the realities of infrastructure, materials, and trade-offs. Real change won't come from legislation alone; it happens when individuals choose differently — when we buy less, waste less, and make each decision with the long view in mind. The goal isn't perfection, it's progress: small, sustainable choices that make our lives and our planet better over time. If that approach resonates with you, share this episode with someone who's trying to live more intentionally. Real stewardship doesn't start with politics — it starts with practice. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses this fact by offering five lessons we can learn from the life of King David. Many times, following God's direction can lead to division or spiritual conflict, but when we are diligent to keep following God's plans for our lives, He will always provide what we need. Every season comes with struggles, and as we continually learn about God and His Kingdom, we become better equipped to overcome hardships and rejection. Cooperating with God for His purposes is the greatest opportunity we've been given, so let's listen and obey Him—even when it leads to adversity.

Wall Street Journal reporter Anna Mathews joined Minnesota Now to talk about the reporting.
