I met German Utria in the 5th grade in 1983 or so. Our friendship was forged on music, movies, food, and more. I also based the Gerry character in my films 1985-1986 and Cool Summer on this person who made (and continues to make) an indelible impact on me. In this interview we discuss friend groups, how that shapes who we are when we're younger (and older), going to the mall in the 80s, and burning your hands on pizza. Episode #91: Dr. Lisa Damour's latest book, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers , is out in paperback. On this episode we revisit the best nuggets of my previous conversation with Dr. Lisa, focusing on teen and tween friend groups and all of the anxiety that goes along with parenting a teen who is dealing with not being in a group. We cover teens not liking their place in a group, wishing they had a group, wishing they had a smaller group, and so on. We also discuss the reality that every kid will be left out and will likely leave out others, and we touch on what "mental health" actually means. (It doesn't mean feeling good all the time.) Finally, we spend a good deal of time on helping teens manage conflict with friends. Dr. Lisa Damour is a renowned psychologist and the NYT bestselling author of Untangled, Under Pressure, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers, and the co-host of the Ask Lisa Podcast. Find Dr. Lisa on Instagram and Twitter.Topics We Covered: Dr. Lisa with Dax and Monica on Armchair ExpertTeens will get left out and leave others. Friend groups seem overly formal to adults these days, but it's a reality for teens. Lisa said, "If your kid has one or two good buddies, leave it alone. It's perfect. If your kid has a large friendship group, do not assume that anyone is going out of their way to cause trouble. It is the nature of those larger groups."In groups of over four, it's impossible that every person will like each other equally. If your teen has a few close friends, they have everything they need for a positive social life. Reassure them that we have good data showing that the least stressed kids have one or two good friends.Understanding that mental health has come to be equated with feeling good or relaxed or happy. These are all wonderful things, but they're not what mental health is. Dr. Damour explains that being mentally healthy is about having feelings that fit the circumstance, then managing those feelings, even if those are negative emotions.Learning the difference between uncomfortable and unmanageable.Helping teens make the most of the friendship strife they face by learning how to handle conflict. Episode #65 with Dr. Lisa Damour Dr. Lisa Damour is the NYT bestselling author of Untangled, Under Pressure, and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers. She's also the co-host of the Ask Lisa Podcast. On Dear Nina, I focus on adult friendships, but sometimes I touch on teen friendships because teen friend strife is slipping into adult friendships. While it was once expected that teens would experience friendship changes as part of growing up, it now seems making sure teens never feel upset about their social lives is yet another thing for parents to manage. Lisa's work helps adults understand how much distress to expect in teens' lives and when there's cause for concern. Find Dr. Lisa on Instagram and Twitter. This episode, addresses difficulties, people face as a relates to appropriate boundaries in certain environments. It talks about how sometimes people can date, their friends, colleagues, or classmates and potential consequences around this.
Friend groups get a lot of attention whenever I post about them on social media, and I'm not surprised. The group itself is like a story root. You feel like you BELONG inside it.But what do we really KNOW about friend groups? Where did we learn about how they should operate? Sometimes they're modeled to us, and sometimes, we imagine them to be what we see in books or TV shows. So that's what I'm tackling in today's episode: how to join one, create one, strengthen one, and how to use them to enhance your life. I'm sure there will be more episodes on this topic, but today, I just wanted to lay down some thoughts. In this episode you'll hear about:The strength of a friend group – and how it's actually based on the strength of the individual relationships and connections within itHow to join an established friend group and become a more permanent member by taking initiative, showing up, contributing, and investing in the relationshipsThe pros and cons of joining a group – for example, you don't have to start from scratch, but you might feel behind! – and the evolutions friend groups go throughEffort, energy, trial and error required to create a friend group – and the importance to remember other people might not be as invested, which is OKUtilizing open-ended invites – for example, “I'm going to the bar at 4 p.m. tomorrow; stop by if you want to!” – and making it something you were going to do anywaysPicking an interest and creating a group around it – for example, a movie group!Resources & LinksLike what you hear? Visit my website, leave me a voicemail, and follow me on Instagram! Want to take this conversation a step further? Send this episode to a friend.
