Why is there an Apple event scheduled for a Monday? Has the very course of time and space been altered in such a way was to warp the very fabric of reality and Kleenex tissues? No, I think it's Tim Cook just having a laugh.
On episode 364 of Geekiest Show Ever, Elisa and Melissa are reunited to discuss their life updates. Melissa is still house hunting and Elisa went on a cruise to celebrate her birthday. Warning: this episode contains yummy descriptions of food so you might want to grab a snack before you hit play. Tim get's a bunch of shots, DC holds their FanDome, Rockstar remasters the original trilogy, and an Atari ST still running strong since 1986
A data dump usually means a massive transfer from one place to another. In this case it meant a dying enclosure and two failed hard drives. A bit of bad luck for Guy turns into a teachable moment
Believe it or not, we had sort of intended to do a show from Macstock or nearby at least, but circumstanced deemed otherwise. Some virtual (but very real) technical issues, audio feedback, and the fact that Guy took a laptop running a Mojave beta (so no Rogue Amoeba apps could be run) meant that frankly it was just impossible. It also didn't matter how many microphones Guy took with him (over 10) no matter what he thought at the time he was gathering them.
John Nemo finally gets a new TV and send audio in to talk about it, plus Trump sues Twitter, South Korea broadband sues Netflix, Tim also gets a new TV, and much more!
Tim and David discuss LEGO Star Wars Battles, Diablo, Foundation, Ted Lasso, and a argument breaks out on a remake or a fresh start.
In this solo show Bart shares his excitement about discovering the 'Day to Night' series of unique time-lapse photos by photographer Stephen Wilkes on the Spark & Fire podcast. David Buys a clockworkPi and a wireless CarPlay system, while Tim works out a VESA adapter for his iMac. Apple's yearly fall event makes the news, Amazon releases TVs, and Apple screws over FlickType.
Mike Potter that MacStock Wizard is getting ready to host another Macstock in Woodstock, Illinois. Like last year, he'll wave his magic wand and make it all virtual! Well most of it anyway.
Tim and David discuss (no spoilers!) Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Matrix Resurrections, James Bond, and the first few episodes of Marvel's What If?
No matter what some may say, there is no such thing as good or bad news, there's just news. However the LACK of news lately has been Maddening (pun intended), so the announcement of an event on Tuesday, September 14th fills our hearts with glee, sunshine and rainbows, THAT IS good news!
On episode 363 Elisa is joined by MyMac.com podcast co-host Guy Serle. Don't worry-it's not about microphones this time! Instead, Guy shares his fascination with his new technological diversion, the Samsung DeX. Did Guy like the DeX? Love it? Hate it? You'll have to listen to the episode to find out! Check out our full show notes here: https://www.geekiestshowever.com/gse363-what-the-dex-is-going-on-with-guy-serle Do you have questions about what you heard in this episode? Guy is away and so I very nearly decided to take the week off from recording as well, then I met up up a listener and he said ‘what's all this about no recording next week' so I said well come on and we'll do a show, so with no further ado……. Karl the Mad Madden
Tim and David discuss the sad passing of James Horner, a terrible iPhone mount from ACEFAST, and the Xbox Series S. Plus Tim has a water leak, and the Sequoia gets a carlink 6 remote start app!
Remember when simplicity was actually almost built-in to Apple products? When presenters would stand on stage and say “All you need to do is push this button and we'll do all the heavy lifting.” Those days? LONG gone.
On episode 362 Elisa speaks with Mike Potter, founder of the Macstock Conference and Expo, about Virtual Macstock 2021. The first Macstock took place in 2015, and is a great way not just to learn, but to meet great people in the Mac community. Mike gives us the lowdown on this year's virtual conference, and a sneak peek of what's to come for Macstock 2022. Recent experiments by Guy has made him start to think. A dangerous precedent that you would believe the world would want to avoid, but they did it anyway. Is the current crop of emulation of not just X86 coded apps, but iOS and iPadOS apps a look into the future? Are we getting closer to that time when what OS you're running is irrelevant? That's the subject for the next section anyway.
That pesky Apple Car just won't go away! Just when you thought it was safe to start looking at what analysts say again, this crops up once again proving the old saying…”Analysts are idiots who will say anything to get you to part ways with your money in the direction they're being paid to tell you to spend it at.”. OK, the saying might not be old, in fact we may have made it up here on the spot, but it it doesn't make it any less true.
On Geekiest Show Ever episode 361, Melissa talks with Allison Sheridan, host of Nosillacast Podcast and Chit Chat Across the Pond, on an episode of CCATP on how to help seniors set up their iPhones. Here is a link to Melissa's Guide to Setting up iPhone for Vintage Users in a Dignified Way https://www.themacmommy.com/2021/08/setting-up-iphone-for-vintage-users-in_01897090834.html Check out our full show notes here: https://www.geekiestshowever.com/gse361-ccatp-meets-gse Do you have questions about what you heard in this episode? Topics include Huawei allegations, Apple allowing external payment links in reader apps but not games, better TV options for John Nemo, Xbox Series S, selling a Mac, and is Wireless Apple CarPlay adapters finally ready for prime time?
Apple is the company that gives and then takes away. Announcements have been made that they are going to start scanning users Photos library to help stop underage exploitation and while that is a lofty goal, what does it mean in regards to user's privacy that Apple has touted in their press clippings?
David talks about his new 900Mbit fibre connection, Tim is building a new Plex media server from a miniPC, Apple news about their child endangerment plans, and is the xR the best used iPhone you can buy?
Tim and David discuss the passing of Richard Donner, LucasFilm hiring a deep-fake artist, Disney being sued by Scarlett Johansson, as well as reviews of Black Widow and season 1 of Loki
Gaz is off doing all things Gaz this week so Karl Madden graciously allowed himself to be blackmailed into being on. For fulfilling his end of the deal, those pictures will never be released to the general public. They go into their recording setup and gear because there's not really all that much else going on and Guy LOVES talking about that stuff.
With David absent, Guy Serle joins Tim to discuss some podcast history, Apple lack of touch displays and employees wanting to continue working from home, Tim's mini-PC gaming rig, Guy's new desk, and Activision Blizzard being sued.
With fall about to drop in about a month, a lot people begin to focus of new iPhones. However with the transition away from Intel for the Macs, it has been a very chaotic kind of year not even including a global pandemic. The M1 Macs have been pretty good, but there's lots of room for improvement with the Macs that haven't gotten out of the labs yet.
We talked about some of the new features coming up for macOS Monterey last week and said we'd talk some more about it this week...which is what we're going to do. So that shouldn't be all that surprising.
Tim and David discuss the Surface Duo, Galaxy Watch, Bezos vs Branson, inexpensive noise cancellation headphones, and more.
The first public beta for macOS Monterey is now out and SO many people are talking about, so we thought we might too! Because we're all about getting out the information our listeners demand! Oooor…we just like jumping on any bandwagon that we can. There'll be more on this next week for the bits we didn't get to this time.
Lots of talk from Capital Hill in regards to those naughty big tech companies. Congress wants them to play by the same rules as the average person as if the average person could create a big tech company…or that they could either. Oddly enough, Apple is probably in less of a fix as the other four, by these bills definition.
On Geekiest Show Ever episode 360, we thought it would be fun to discuss what's on our home screens and the ways we find iOS and iPadOS useful. Tim and David discuss the weather like any good podcast does, Evercade, Arduboy FX, Playdate, Warcraft, Starcraft, Total Annihilation, and the Disney+ show Loki
Tim has two more PC Laptops, an Acer Swift 3 and a LincPlus 14, and David picks up Motorola Razr from 2019. Plus the continuation of car problems for both the guy and prediction of Intel's issues.
There are several standards in regards to home automation. Reaching back into the Jurassic age there was X-10 which made it possible to connect several devices to a home security monitored (by someone else) system. However it wasn't very interactive once set up. Coming into the modern age besides Apple's Homekit there's Belkin's Wemo (now discontinued), SmartThings, Ankuoo, D-Link, and TP-Link amongst others.
Dub-dub 2021 is now fading away but all the great stuff they revealed is open for review! Like…that thing…where they…did, stuff?
On Geekiest Show Ever episode 359, we cherry-pick our favorites from the slew of new software features that were announced at WWDC2021. Tim and David finally crack the Vader code! It explains everything! Plus, JJ Abrams has a OF COURSE moment during an interview, WarnerMedia and Discovery merge with an awesome new name, and some interesting Nintendo Switch stats!
Guy has returned from Walton country ablaze with success after bagging multiple Mooses…meece, mice? LOT'S of plural Moose. So no matter what he says after this, he's obviously lying. WWDC 21 starts on Monday which is probably when most people will hear this podcast. So there's no real point in speculating much about what it'll all be about. So a few randoms things will be thrown in instead.
Tim and David discuss Google I/O, stupid podcast problems that are not actual problems, bad cables with CarPlay, the new iMac and RAM, and Vufine, HP Pavilion X360, and the Lenovo Flex 5
Today Guy is in Walton country apparently he’s decided that he and his his family are going to spend time together and have no electrical equipment so they all have to call out goodnight to each other. Though before they reach their destination we did try to connect with Guy but couldn’t.
On episode 358 of Geekiest Show Ever, we got to nerd out with Brett Terpstra! In this solo show, and very much inspired by last month's chat with Antonio Rosario about the railway photographer O. Winston Link, Bart digs a little deeper into the whys and the hows of railway photography. The first part of the show explores the differences between thinking about shooting railways as opposed to trains, with the hope of inspiring you to have a go. Following on from that, the second part gives some practical tips that might help you convert your inspiration into great images. We are about 2 weeks away from WWDC 2021 and expectations are high! As in, anyone making predictions and claiming to have any accuracy is probably on illegal medication. That won’t stop the GMen from making predictions though because they’re naturally high…on LIFE!
According to some, Apple and Google’s market dominance in Smartphone operating systems is stifling competition. While some of their points are valid, they also are ignoring the consequences of opening the ecosystems to everyone.
Geekiest Show Ever and the Essential Apple Podcast go off the rails for The Geekiest Essential Apple Ever! Marvels finally gives us a glimpse of Eternals, Zack Snyder continues to post about Justice League and his woes with WB, and Tim and David go deep on universe building. Plus Invincible and Jupiters Legacy.
