James Gunn's Superman (2025) is in cinemas right now, and is really good! It has a wonderful central performance by David Corenswet, and is as colourful as it is hopeful, and we need that right now. As I'm off this week, it felt like a good time to revisit the late Christopher Reeve's iconic performance in Superman (1978).Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Verbal Diorama's Heroes Through the Decades miniseries, continuing into the 1970s!Whether you know him as Clark Kent, Kal-El, the Man of Steel, the Man of Tomorrow, or just as Superman, that famous tights-and-cape combo emblazoned with the S on his chest is a symbol of a lot of things:Hope, courage, freedom, love... truth, justice and the American way, and a movie with a rich history in comic books, that was made in part because of Zorro, and in another due to 1966's Batman. The late Christopher Reeve is perfectly cast as both Clark Kent and Superman, in a landmark superhero film by the late Richard Donner. Donner's personality clashes with father-and-son producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind led to him being fired from Superman II, despite him completing reportedly 75% of the sequel....This episode was originally released on 5th May 2022Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Send us a textChristopher Reeve soars into cinema history in 1978's "Superman," a groundbreaking film that established the superhero blockbuster format we know today. Before Marvel, before Batman's dark reinvention, this was the movie that convinced audiences a man could truly fly. What makes this film so captivating decades later isn't just its place in history, but how it fearlessly embraces both cosmic scale and intimate humanity. From the crystalline landscapes of Krypton to the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet, the film takes viewers on a journey that feels both alien and deeply familiar. Reeve's performance remains the gold standard for superhero portrayals - his ability to transform between the regal Man of Steel and the bumbling Clark Kent with nothing more than posture, voice, and confidence is a masterclass in acting that later Superman actors still measure themselves against. The film's vintage charm extends to its supporting cast and villainous plot. Margot Kidder's Lois Lane balances professional ambition with romantic vulnerability, while Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor occupies an underground lair beneath Grand Central Station that ranks among cinema's most memorable villain headquarters. The special effects, revolutionary for their time, might seem quaint today but still evoke wonder in their creativity and ambition. When Superman reverses Earth's rotation to turn back time - a moment of pure comic book logic - the film confidently embraces its fantastical nature rather than apologizing for it.Superman (1978) wasn't constrained by established superhero formulas because it was creating them. This freedom allowed for creative choices that modern superhero films might shy away from, yet they contribute to the film's enduring charm. Want to understand why superhero films dominate today's box office? Look no further than this pioneering classic that made us all believe a man could fly. Watch (or rewatch) it today and experience the birth of a genre that would eventually reshape cinema itself.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

1978 and 2025. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Superman (1978) and Superman (2025). Our conversation begins with our reactions to 1978's Superman, directed by Richard Donner, with most of the podcast watching the film for the first time in preparation for the podcast recording. We talk about the score from John Williams and how it connects to his other great scores from the 1970s and 80s. We praise the merits of the original film, especially Christopher Reeve as Superman and Clark Kent. We discuss the merits of 2025's Superman, directed by Jason Gunn, beginning by praising the chemistry between David Corenswet's Superman and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane. We talk about the connections between the film and the wider DC Universe films, as well as comparisons to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In this episode of the show we are tying into our Richard Lester conversations with a debate about the seminal comic book movie, the Richard Donner-directed Superman. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about the ways in which Superman wrote the playbook for what later became a comic book movie genre, how the many cuts of the movie that are in existence complicate the plot, and how Christopher Reeve was perhaps the perfect casting for the role of the Man of Steel. We also talk about Hackman's Lex Luthor functioning as a de facto Bond villain, how the movie is perhaps too goofy for its own good at times, how the Krypton sequence in the TV cut is long enough to be considered its own disaster movie and how Richard Donner sounded as though he invented the word "verisimilitude."Tune in and enjoy!Subscribe to our patreon at patreon.com/uncutgemspod (3$/month) and support us by gaining access to this show in full in addition to ALL of our exclusive podcasts, such as bonus tie-ins, themed retrospectives and director marathons!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsHead over to our website to find out more! James Gunn's new SUPERMAN begins from the assumption that audiences already have a working knowledge of the Man of Steel's origin story, his super-skill set, and his romance with Lois Lane. Gunn's film benefits greatly from being able to skip past the basics, but it wouldn't have been possible without Richard Donner's franchise-launching blockbuster SUPERMAN, which codified those basics for the big screen. So this week we're spinning the planet backwards to 1978 and revisiting filmgoers' first introduction to The Last Son Of Krypton — who we don't properly meet until nearly an hour in because, as it turns out, there are about four different movies tucked inside SUPERMAN. We're joined by writer, podcaster, and Supes superfan Chris Klimek to discuss how it all holds together from a modern perspective, and whether Christopher Reeve's definitive performance is enough to overcome all the film's flaws, or just most of them. Then in Feedback, the SINNERS conversation lives on, with a listener detailing its many connections to another film that we considered for that pairing.  Please share your thoughts about either and all versions of SUPERMAN, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Teve a Era Tim Burton, a Era Joel Schumacher, a Era Christopher Nolan, a Era Zack Snyder e agora a Era Matt Reeves.

This week, with the new DCU relaunched under the watchful eye of James Gunn, we take it all the way back to not just the dawn of DC Comics on the silver screen, but what is really the grand daddy of all superhero films period. It's 1978's Superman, directed by Richard Donner, and starring Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Marlon Brando, Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter and Valerie Perrine. It is the homework that countless films over the years have copied off of, and combine that with its vintage 70s special effects and a rather tumultuous production, does it still hold up all these years later? You'll have to listen for our thoughts on a movie surprisingly neither host had ever seen in full. Plus: J Mo's got theatrical field reports on Jurassic World Rebirth and Materialists, and Hayley's hyper-fixating on home makeover TV. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, Superman is currently streaming on HBO Max in the US and Crave here in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Friendship, Heart Eyes, The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, La La Land, Christine, Rock The Block, Battle on the Beach, Renovation Resort, and Best in Miniature. We'll be back... possibly as soon as next week? Who knows! Talking about who knows what film. And until then we'll see you at the movies!!

On the one hand, the IMAX-driven spectacle of F1 is undeniably satisfying to watch on the big screen; on the other hand, we all walked out of Joseph Kosinski's second teamup with producer Jerry Bruckheimer unsure whether it qualifies as a movie and not just a sophisticated simulation thereof. Despite the star power of Brad Pitt and a plethora of familiar sports-movie tropes, there's a human element missing from F1 that left us all slightly perplexed, and which is thrown into even sharper relief when placed against the character-driven comedy of the other film in this pairing, TALLADEGA NIGHTS. But despite their drastically different points of view, the two share some uncanny similarities that we get into during Connections, from their shared narrative tension between team loyalty and individual glory, to a crash-and-burn approach to trauma, to a wallpaper-like view of corporate sponsorship. Then we take an extra lap on this racing pairing with a Your Next Picture show recommendation for the long-running Netflix docuseries F1: DRIVE TO SURVIVE. “You've got ME? Who's got YOU?!?Lois LaneWith a new Superman movie now in theaters (James Gunn's aptly titled Superman) it's time to take a look at one of the biggest conundrums in all of popular culture. Just where do Superman's powers come from? While there have been conflicting explanations for this given by comics, TV shows, animated series, and movies through the decades, one point has taken hold pretty solidly for most of the character's eight-plus decades: many of Superman's powers come from the fact that he comes from a race of aliens who developed under a red sun, which means our more intensely radiant yellow sun charges up his cells and gives him his amazing abilities. The nature of Superman's powers had been addressed in different ways in the comics over the years (at one point, ALL Kryptonians were simply born with super powers, before explanations like Earth's lighter gravity, our yellow sun, and others were added to the mythos). But the first media adaptation that really tried to address the source of his powers came with Richard Donner's masterful Superman: The Movie (1978). In that film, no less than Marlon Brando as Jor-El patiently explains to the audience the ways a Kryptonian would adapt to Earth's environment and the powers one might get.Look, there's only so much realism we can expect with a character like Superman, who is more of an ideal to strive for than a hard science fiction character. But we dive into the science and the story, and also discuss the timeless vibes that make that first proper Superman movie such an enduring classic in this episode.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9jeGwHn57EFURTHER VIEWINGMuch of this episode's discussion was based around two of the best superhero movies ever made, Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980). While Christopher Reeve might be the most perfect piece of superhero casting ever, the other two movies in that franchise are uneven at best. But there's other Superman media that address the source of the Man of Steel's powers! While divisive, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel made a valiant effort to explain why Superman can do the things he does (including the yellow sun). And James Gunn's currently in theaters Superman (2025) leans heavily on the solar power angle. It's also just an absolute blast and the best superhero movie in years.FURTHER READINGKrypton and Its SunThere are two main ingredients in Superman's home planet that are said to contribute to his powers on Earth. One is that Krypton itself is habitable (and potentially with heavier gravity), and in order for that to be the case, it has to exist in the habitable zone of the star it orbits. Proxima Centauri B is one such world that has captured scientists' attention. The one more relevant to today's discussion is that Superman was born under a red sun, which makes Earth's yellow sun supercharge his cells. In Krypton's case, that's a dying star known as a red giant. Which brings us to…A quick guide to the different colors of stars. Although, as Hakeem points out, Earth's sun isn't yellow, but green! Eventually, it will turn red, but that's a problem none of us will be around to see.KryptochondriaWe all remember photosynthesis from elementary school, right? But in order for human (or animal in the case of Krypto the Superdog) cells to be charged up with solar radiation to the degree necessary for superheroics, cellular organelles and ribosomes would have to function differently. Also the amount of the neurotransmitter known as adenosine triphosphate (creatine devotees know all about ATP) it would take to generate the energy for super-feats is prohibitive. We confess that following Hakeem on the matter of the absorption spectrum is a little challenging, but don't just take our word for it! Failed Flying Techniques and More!Tamara gives us a red giant batch of story analysis and background info in this one, but because seeing is believing, some stuff is better watched than read. For more context on Superman: The Movie and the incredible effort it took to make you believe a man could fly, check out The Magic Behind the Cape (where we get the “best special effect of all” that Tamara quotes) and Front Projection 101. Also, somewhere on a Superman: The Movie Blu-ray extra that doesn't appear to be online, there is video evidence of the “dummy shot out of an air cannon” failed flying technique Tamara brings up, but we can't link it here! WE ARE RUNNING A CONTEST! Evan and Megan have lots to say, and they also have some observations about Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1978) and Richard Lester's SUPERMAN II (1980). Then Dave joins Evan and Megan for BRICK, a German thriller about a mysterious brick wall that appears in the night and strands a grieving young couple inside their apartment building, where they're eventually joined by Airbnbers, an old, his grandaughter, and a conspiracy theorist. There are a lot of tropes (and charitably, homages) and we break them all down. Over on Patreon, we watched the 1992 Val Kilmer film THUNDERHEART.

MOVIE Morning

The time is finally here. My most anticipated movie of the year - James Gunn's SUPERMAN - is finally arriving in theaters this weekend. I had the incredible opportunity to see this movie at an early Fan First Screening yesterday, which is how I'm getting this review out about the time it is debuting worldwide, in a select few countries today. This is the official, theatrical launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU, that I really hope will actually have the chance to thrive. I love DC Comics, and I've loved Superman since I was a small child. I was introduced to the character through the Justice League cartoons and the original 1978 Richard Donner film. I dressed up as Superman and tried to do the curl and all of that. It has been a LONG wait to finally have another Superman movie on the big screen, and - boy, oh boy - has it been a tumultuous one.I was a huge fan of Henry Cavill's Superman and am one of the people who love Man of Steel. Zack Snyder's Justice League is one of my favorite comic book movies of all-time too, but the toxicity around the excitement and hate for this new movie has been rough. It's the 'sports-ation' of movie fandoms that has really frustrated me over the last few years, and it's showcased no more clearly than how people talked about this movie up until release (and probably after release too). That being said, because the character means so much to me and because James Gunn's film really resonate with me on an emotional level, I've always known he was going to deliver a worthy film that starts the Big Blue again. You'd know that about me if you've listened to any of my reviews of James Gunn's films and shows, which are all glowing, and listened to my breakdowns of the trailers. The trailers certified for me that it seemed like Gunn was finally taking the character back to its much needed hopeful and optimistic, yet slightly retro, roots. So, does James Gunn's Superman deliver on its promises; is it the truest version of Superman we've had in a long time? Find out in this SPOILER-FREE review!Superman:Written and Directed by: James GunnSuperman created by: Jerry Siegel & Joe ShusterProduced by: James Gunn, Peter SafranExecutive Producers: Nikolas Korda, Chantel Nong Vo, Lars P. We're trading classical guitars and military trenches for red trunks and crystal fortresses as we discuss: We look at how Superman redefined the superhero genre before it was a genre—and why it still matters nearly 50 years later. Why Christopher Reeve may be the most perfectly cast superhero of all time, and how his dual performance still holds up. Ian dives into the film's structure and why the three-act split (Krypton, Kansas, Metropolis) feels so bold and ambitious. We condemn and then forgive Teen Clark (Jeff East) and  do likewise for Brando but without the forgiveness at the end We discuss whether Lex Luthor is a credible villain—or just a walking punchline with a killer property portfolio. Liam marvels at the charm, the score, and the genuine sense of wonder—while struggling not to get emotional about Pa Kent. We ask: does the “reverse time” ending still fly? Or is that where the cape starts to fray? And of course: whether Superman (1978) is the Best Film Ever. Become a Patron of this podcast and support the BFE at https://www.patreon.com/BFE. DC Comics's Superman franchise, based on the character of the same name created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in June 1938, has seen the release of various films since its inception.[1]The character debuted in cinemas in a series of animated shorts beginning in 1941 and was the protagonist of two movie serials in 1948 and 1950. An independent studio, Lippert Pictures, released the first Superman feature film, Superman and the Mole Men, starring George Reeves, in 1951. In 1973, the film rights to the Superman character were purchased by Ilya Salkind, Alexander Salkind, and Pierre Spengler. After multiple scripts and several years in development, Richard Donner was hired as director, and he shot two films, Superman (1978) (marketed as Superman: The Movie), and Superman II (1980), at the same time, both starring Christopher ReeveHosted by Ausha. You'll believe a man can sigh as Supergeeks Javi, Paul and - indestructibly - Producer Brad discover the third time's not the charm with Superman III, though it does offer one unforgettable high-concept scene (and a truly funny setup and payoff). Our hosts boldly bend format this episode by picking three scenes each to examine (one of which may or may not involve bowling vandalism via Super-sneeze) as they struggle to maintain their sanity against the artificial Kryptonite of this threequel's seemingly never-ending inanities. In stark contrast to the wonders that Rocky III rewarded us with by adding iconic adversary Mr. T (as recounted in our very first episode!), here we get Superman vs. Supercomputer (that's an Atari) as programming prodigy Richard Pryor is extorted into villainy by evil tycoon Robert Vaughn. Despite their combined talents (and a psychic nutritionist stand-in for Miss Teschmacher), they are no Lex Luthor, just as director Richard Lester is no Richard Donner (and composer Ken Thorne is no John Williams). Still, while Margot Kidder's Lois Lane is conspicuously sidelined for most of the film, we're treated to Annette O'Toole's lovely Lana Lang, and Christopher Reeve gets to play a creepy, scuzzy new character (Man of Heel?). You will not believe a man can ski off a skyscraper and survive, but you will enjoy this episode full of love for Superman and our hosts' entertaining exasperation at this misguided misfire. 1983 Box OfficeJuly 8, 1983 Weekend Box OfficeSuperman III Box Office ResultsRichard Pryor's 1981 appearance on The Tonight Show displaying his Superman fandom.Follow us!InstagramBlueskyemail: Multiplexoverthruster@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. I recently re-listened to it in the run-up to James Gunn's Superman and I was flabbergasted at how much my attitude had changed; specifically to the first two films directed by Richard Donner and steered with confidence and the contributions of an amazing creative team. I was dismissive, persnickety and downright rude. So, here now is a much-needed revisit, twelve years wiser, and following the life and death (forced-resurrection and death again) of the Snyderverse. There's arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman.  No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender.  With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank!  This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters.Join hosts Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor, and Kris Ingersoll, co-host of the Media/Lit podcast, as they bring on several guests every month to share their passion for the one and only Dark Knight.  From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned.  Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. We're one month away from a new Superman film, and the first theatrical release of the new DC Universe.  Before a new Superman graces the screen though, it's time once and for all we honor what came before, and rank every single theatrically released Superman film!We continue our yearlong theme of World's Finest by going back all the way to 1978 with the iconic first Christopher Reeve Superman movie directed by Richard Donner, all the way to 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and everything in between.  In this monster episode, we rank seven Superman films, which include (in chronological order); Superman.  Superman II.  Superman III.  Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.  Superman Returns.  Man of Steel.  And Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  With this being such a big episode, we had to bring in a massive panel of returning guests, starting of course with the podcasting director of the Pop Break, Alex Marcus.  Also joining us, it's Alex's cohost on the new It's Tom-plicated Podcast, and he was a guest on the epic Christopher Nolan movie rankings episode, Manish Mathur. Also making their returns, he was on our recent Batman Allies Draft episode, it's pop break contributor, Ben Murchison.  And cohost of the flagship podcast of the Pop Break, the Socially Distanced Podcast, and the Anime X Pop podcast, it's Amanda Rivas. These six temporary Kryptonians come together to break down everything you could possibly want analyzed in a Superman movie.  It is a true nostalgic history lesson of all these movies.  We cover it all; the good, the bad, and the Nuclear Man.For Superman fans, this is a perfect precursor to next month's Superman movie!

THE MOVIE SPIDER-MAN 2 OWED EVERYTHING TO! Superman: The Movie was generational. So much so that Donner and the Salkinds saw it preemptively and had a sequel made in tandem with the first! Unfortunately, despite the promise of a release the year after, the highly-anticipated sequel was delayed to 1980 in light of Donner being fired and a lot of the movie being reshot. After many years and public demand, his cut wouldn't release until 2006, making do with camera tests and newly-shot footage to fill out the blank spots. So, how did it fare? Tune in to find out as Brian and Alec continue the Supermanathon with Richard Donner's (close-to) original cut of SUPERMAN II!

It's Timeline time everyone! Because we're continuing our look at Michael Crichton's movie adaptations that arn't Jurassic Park. The year is 2003, Richard Donner (director of Superman: The Movie) decided to gather up Paul Walker, Gerry Butler, Frances O'Connor and Billy Connolly to do a big time travel to the year 1357 in order to run around a bit and cause of ruckus. Not the best Michael Crichton adaptation, some would even consider it the worst. And maybe it is. In celebration of The Goonies (1985) celebrating its 40th anniversary, Bald Move is rereleasing our coverage of the beloved film. Special thanks to Fernando Rodriguez, who commissioned the 1985 classic kid's adventure movie, "The Goonies".  Directed by Richard Donner with a script by Chris Columbus, this movie really brings us back to our child hood days, which leads to us spending time fondly reminiscing about the film and growing up, and of course obsessively picking nits and busting "The Goonies" balls.  Which of course, is our mothers' favorite part.  Stay tuned til the end as we invite a surprise guest to give their opinions as well! Thanks again, Fernando!  We couldn't do it without you.  If you'd like to commission your very own movie  or other audio-visual work, please check out our shop for details.
