It's Timeline time everyone! Because we're continuing our look at Michael Crichton's movie adaptations that arn't Jurassic Park. The year is 2003, Richard Donner (director of Superman: The Movie) decided to gather up Paul Walker, Gerry Butler, Frances O'Connor and Billy Connolly to do a big time travel to the year 1357 in order to run around a bit and cause of ruckus. Not the best Michael Crichton adaptation, some would even consider it the worst. And maybe it is. Episode 319. We quick-change into our capes for an episode on Richard Donner's 1978 Superman: The Movie. This has all the classic Superman iconography you know and love, plus a complicated real estate scheme where Lex Luthor wants to sink the California coastline to make a new one. We discuss the strange pacing that makes you wait nearly an hour to see Superman in action, the surprisingly sincere romance (and horniness), Jor-El being a busy dad with two jobs, Midwestern wheat fields, how we expect James Gunn's Superman to emulate this or step away from it, and if we'll ever see a big-screen Superman with a mullet like that one comic from the 1990s.Click here to watch a video of this episode. In celebration of The Goonies (1985) celebrating its 40th anniversary, Bald Move is rereleasing our coverage of the beloved film. Special thanks to Fernando Rodriguez, who commissioned the 1985 classic kid's adventure movie, "The Goonies". Directed by Richard Donner with a script by Chris Columbus, this movie really brings us back to our child hood days, which leads to us spending time fondly reminiscing about the film and growing up, and of course obsessively picking nits and busting "The Goonies" balls. Which of course, is our mothers' favorite part. Stay tuned til the end as we invite a surprise guest to give their opinions as well! Thanks again, Fernando! We couldn't do it without you. Perfectly combining medieval fantasy and 80s cheesiness, Richard Donner's 1985 film features tragic romance, revenge, swordfight, and of course, magic. Featuring command performances from Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Matthew Broderick the film was a box office dud, but forty years on, should it get another chance?Sarah Jefferson Carter, writer and director of the new show Queendom Come, joins Derick to discuss this magical movie. For more info, head to underratedmoviepodcast.comPatreon:https://patreon.com/UnderratedMoviePodcastInstagram:https://instagram.com/underratedmoviepodcastTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@underratedmoviepodcastYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAbpTHWyBle7yKJv4-gR_g
This deep dive explores the surprising origin and evolution of Superman's crystal aesthetic. But why crystals? We unpack the ancient human fascination with these mythic natural formations. What began as a bold artistic choice in Richard Donner's 1978 film transformed Superman's visual identity forever, replacing the Buck Rogers-inspired aesthetics of early comics with something altogether more alien and mesmerizing.

This time we watched Tomorrow, the Rat — Episode 4 from Series 1 of Doomwatch, first broadcast 2 March 1970 and written by Terence Dudley. That's four years before James Herbert published The Rats (which we covered in episode 4). It's highly likely he was inspired by this vintage BBC sci-fi thriller—pen in hand, watching Doomwatch unfold.Doomwatch was a vintage BBC science fiction series that aired from 1970 to 1972. A prime example of British sci-fi, it followed a government scientific agency led by Dr Spencer Quist (John Paul) investigating futuristic environmental and technological threats. Think of it as classic BBC sci-fi with serious Black Mirror energy. The show was created by Doctor Who masterminds Gerry Davis and Kit Pedler—the very same duo who invented the Cybermen. Davis had been a Doctor Who story editor; Pedler served as scientific adviser. Their fascination with the dangers of science run amok became the foundation of Doomwatch, this cult BBC science fiction drama.Series 1 and 2 each had thirteen episodes; Series 3 had twelve (though one, Sex and Violence, was never broadcast). The BBC got cold feet, possibly due to real execution footage and unflattering portrayals of public figures like Mary Whitehouse and Cliff Richard. As with far too much vintage BBC content, parts of Doomwatch are missing—wiped or taped over. At its peak, the show pulled in over 13 million viewers, cementing its place in classic British sci-fi history.Dr Quist was a Nobel-winning physicist haunted by his involvement in the Manhattan Project. (Yes, he appears in Oppenheimer.) John Paul, who played him, was a familiar face on British television: I, Claudius, Triangle, The Avengers, The New Avengers—proper BBC veteran.Toby Wren, played by Robert Powell (who we talked about in episode 46, The Survivor), was a key figure in Series 1. He met a legendary end in the finale, Survival Code. Powell asked to go out with a bang—literally. The BBC received more letters about his on-screen death than any issue since World War II.This episode, Tomorrow, the Rat, was written by Terence Dudley—then the producer of Doomwatch. Dudley directed three episodes and went on to work extensively in Doctor Who, including directing Meglos (1980), and writing Four to Doomsday, Black Orchid, and The King's Demons. He also wrote Target novelisations and K-9 and Company. Classic vintage BBC sci-fi pedigree.Simon Oates plays Dr John Ridge—you may remember him from Beasts (The Dummy episode, which we reviewed in 44a). He also played Steed in the stage version of The Avengers.Penelope Lee appears as Dr Mary Bryant. She once auditioned to play Barbara, the Doctor's original companion. She later voiced Lyn Driver in The Plague Dogs (a British animation not for the faint-hearted) and a computer in Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks. She also featured in Richard Donner's Superman as the Ninth Elder. Peak British sci-fi credentials.Hamilton Dyce turns up as the Minister. You might recognise him as Major General Scobie in Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space—another vintage BBC sci-fi staple. And no, before you ask, none of this cast ever turned up in Boon.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. The behind the scenes stories of two films some time in the making come together in this episode, starting with 1993's Jurassic Park. A film made at a point when Steven Spielberg's box office touch was being questioned. A movie that, had a battle for the rights gone the other way, could have been made by one of Tim Burton, Joe Dante or Richard Donner. As it was, Universal and Spielberg made the movie, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger-headlined Last Action Hero was set to go head-to-head with it. 2019's Booksmart meanwhile took ten years to get made, even though its budget was well under $10m. First time director Olivia Wilde had quite the pitch to earn the job behind the camera - but then had a battle to get audiences to the movie once she'd made it. Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grab your sacred daggers and prepare to fight off some hell hounds because we are rising from the eternal sea to get biblical on Richard Donner's THE OMEN, starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. It's all for you, Chatterers!
It's a triplet birthday celebration of some very 1985 films turning THE BIG 4-0 this week, each with some serious behind-the-camera names: Neil Jordan's THE COMANY OF WOLVES, Stephen King's CAT'S EYE, and Richard Donner's LADYHAWKE. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe; and we'll be back next week to celebrate THE BIG 4-0's of JUST ONE OF THE GUYS and Burt Reynolds in STICK.
We bid a tearful farewell to our favorite actor, Gene Hackman, by discussing his hilarious evil Lex Luthor in Superman (1978). Richard Donner started the whole superhero movie idea with this film, but we won't hold that against him. How electric are Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder? How great does this movie look? And why are so many children getting smacked by their mothers? Bonus video: We each give our most contrarian film opinion. Watch it on our Twitter, BlueSky, Instagram, or TikTok. Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz interviews Shane Black, one of Hollywood's highest-paid screenwriters, who redefined action films with witty dialogue, dark humor, and unforgettable characters. From Lethal Weapon to The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Iron Man 3, Shane discusses his journey from a self-described "oddball" to a filmmaking powerhouse.Pittsburgh Roots and Early Influences (02:55)Born in Pittsburgh, Black shares how his father's printing business and bookshelf of detective novels sparked his love for "tough guy literature" that would later influence his writing style.Overcoming Personal Struggles (08:00)Black candidly discusses his battles with OCD and alcoholism. He reveals how he transformed these challenges into creative strengths and encourages others to "just lean into being weird."The Psychology Behind His Characters (12:04)Black explains how his characters often represent different aspects of his own psychology. He emphasizes that truly compelling writing comes from creating characters with authentic emotional DNA that resonates with the writer's own experiences. The Creation of Lethal Weapon (15:32)Black describes Lethal Weapon as "an urban western" with Mel Gibson's character representing "a Frankenstein kept in a cage" - a Vietnam veteran reviled by society but needed when violence intrudes on everyday life.Working with Hollywood Icons (27:13)Black shares insights about working with legends like Richard Donner, Tony Scott, Joel Silver, and Robert Downey Jr.From Writer to Director (40:06)Black explains his transition to directing to have more creative control over his work. Black adds that directing allows him to move beyond returning to the blank page and into a more collaborative aspect of filmmaking.Latest Project: Play Dirty (52:01)Black discusses working with Mark Wahlberg, and adapting Donald Westlake's Parker series for Amazon, calling Westlake "the king" among mystery writers and explaining his lifelong admiration for these stories he first read at age 12.Throughout the conversation, Black offers a masterclass on screenwriting in Hollywood. Black and Kevin Goetz discover numerous personal connections, creating an unusually intimate portrait of a filmmaker who transformed Hollywood's action genre. His journey from a bookish child to acclaimed filmmaker serves as proof that leaning into one's unique perspective can lead to extraordinary creative achievements. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review or connect on social media. Time to get back in our DeLorean and venture to the past in this special 70's versus battle. These movies have everything that defined the 70's: sex.....drugs.....and the antichrist? Up on the chopping block, we got Wes Craven's debut film with "The Last House on the Left." Was he always the meta satirist that we know him to be? And along side that, we have "The Omen," directed by Richard Donner. Can the guy who gave us "The Goonies" and "Superman" also deliver us a good hell spawn movie? Two well known films, but at the end of the day, one has to be declared the victor. Which shall it be?

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, we watched the 1997 action thriller Conspiracy Theory, directed by Richard Donner (which explains a lot) and starring Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart. In Conspiracy Theory, Gibson plays Jerry Fletcher, a cab driver who is consumed with all manner of conspiracies, using his captive audiences to share his ideas and delusions. He is fixated on Alice Sutton, played by Roberts, a Justice Department lawyer who tolerates him because he once saved her from a mugging. When Gibson is kidnapped by secretive government agents — led by the mysterious Dr. Jonas, played by Patrick Stewart — both he and Sutton become embroiled in a genuine conspiracy that centers on Fletcher's mysterious past and raises difficult questions about the circumstances behind the murder of Sutton's father.Conspiracy Theory was a hit, grossing a total of $137 million and displacing Air Force One at the box office. The critical response was mixed but not altogether negative, with most reviewers criticizing its script and plotting but ultimately holding it up as a serviceable thriller. The taglines for Conspiracy Theory were: “They knew too much.”“What you know could kill you.”“What if your most paranoid nightmares had just come true?”“Jerry Fletcher sees conspiracies everywhere. One has turned out to be true. Now his enemies want him dead. And she's the only one he can trust.”You can find Conspiracy Theory to rent or purchase on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.Episodes of the main feed come out every two weeks, and so we'll see you then with Enemy of the State, the 1998 conspiracy thriller starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman. And don't forget about our Patreon! The Goonies is an important movie for folks of a certain generation, including the absolute madman who is this week's guest. You know him from Pitch Perfect 2, The Suicide Squad, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Silicon Valley and now he's here to talk about The Goonies, Richard Donner's coming-of-age adventure story produced by Steven Spielberg. We bounce around a lot in this episode, going from behind-the-scenes trivia to random Arnold Schwarzenegger impressions to a serious discussion about the authorship of this movie. We even have some great ideas for the poor bastards tasked with writing The Goonies 2 that may or may not involve casting Flula as the new Sloth who speaks only through his butthole. After Lethal Weapon 2 came out and became the third highest grossing film of that year, producers wanted more. So Jeffrey Boam, along with his buddy Robert Mark Kamen (The Karate Kid) once again churned out a script, director Richard Donner came aboard, and everything was one big happy shoot! Of course, this isn't the whole story. So download the show below to find out how Lethal Weapon 3 REALLY happened. Plus, what does Princess Leia have to do with it? How hard was it to get Joe Pesci signed on immediately after winning his Oscar? Why was Rene Russo brought in? Find out as Garrett, Adam, and Matt break all this down, as well as give their thoughts on one of 1992's biggest action films. Also, come back next week as we close this series out and announce our next long form retro that will only rival Stephen King as far as length. Hint, it's something we've been asked to do since we started ten years ago!
Writer-director Lowell Dean has two movies coming out this year; the first, Dark Match, hits Canadian theatres and lands on Shudder in the US this Friday, January 31st. And to celebrate its arrival, he's here to talk about Richard Donner's 1978 blockbuster Superman: The Movie -- which defined superhero cinema, made instant stars out of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, and got a generation to believe a man can fly. Your genial host Norm Wilner always knew, of course.
The Omen is a 1976 supernatural horror film directed by Richard Donner and written by David Seltzer. An international co-production of the United Kingdom and the United States, it stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Spencer Stephens, and Billie Whitelaw.
