This week Guy has swanned off somewhere and can't be bothered to come and do a show, so we have a welcome guest on yes you've guessed it Mr Karl Madden, we thought we'd discuss a couple of topics and see where we go with with them.
Not one, not two, but three days of new Macs and it still feels a little disappointing. Yeah we got a newly designed Mac mini that's the smallest and fastest ever, an iMac with enough power for many Pro users, and an M4 MacBook Pro with a Maximum of power. Fantastic, but no M4 Mac Studio? No M4 Mac Pro? It's like the best chocolate cake ever that you forgot to put frosting on the top. Guest host Karl Madden joins in for one of the longest MyMac Podcasts in some while
Lately I've been experimenting with Livecasting on YouTube with a new short form podcast and our guest Karl Madden actually came up with the name. It's called The Daily Apple Dispatch and it should be roughly 5 minutes long per episode. So when will it begin? What have I done so far with it and how did the setup go? What programs did I use and what issues have come up?
Karl Madden from the Mac and Forth podcast is in to keep Guy in line (good luck with that) while Gaz is away on a well deserved vacation from retirement! Also, General Motors is about to make a big mistake. They are said to be removing both CarPlay and Android Auto from their vehicles with their own Ultifi (no I didn't make that up) platform. This is just one in a series of decisions GM is making to bring more people into the showroom by totally pissing them off. Because nothing enhances the car buying experience like making it even more frustrating..
Gaz is off having a good time so Guy is kidnapping…requesting the presence of Karl Madden from the Mac and Forth podcast to talk about their favourite AI programs and using them while recording the show. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?
Karl Madden of the Mac and Forth podcast join the GMen to help answer a listener question asking about Power Adapters. This got us to thinking (and you know how hard that is), what kind of options are there to power our Apple gear away from wherever it is we call home. Not just that quick trip to Disneyland, but perhaps some far away land filled with wonder unlike anything we've experienced at home! Huh…,maybe we mean Disneyland after all.

What happens when you get two podcasters playing with AI images? Unexpected results and lots of laughs. Karl Madden and Guy spent some time this morning trying to create images with AI and some crazy results occurred. Since this is more visual than usual, Guy will create a version of the podcast on YouTube that will just have the AI image discussion so you don't have to go through the whole thing.

Karl Madden from the Mac and Forth podcast joins Guy in what's been an interesting week in which potential calamity after calamity occurred and we're tempted to say thank you, since not much else is really going on for us to talk about. So instead of more, “Hey how about those new HomePods that look amazingly like the ones Apple already discontinued once” or “Should I get a new Mac now or wait until the M3 miniPro UltraMax comes out?”, we're going to talk about what to do when your worst week ever happens…without it being like, actually life threatening or anything. Because that would REALLY suck. Apple just released their Q3 earnings for 2022 and while the company met expectations, that's about the long and short of it. Mac sales in particular were way down by 20% year over year and the biggest problem seems to be supply constraints and a lot of China's capacity out due to lockdowns enforced by the government. Guest host Karl Madden from the Mac & Forth podcast comes in for Gaz (who's been walking Wilf for a REALLY long time now) and they talk a bit about just how many Macs Apple sells per year. We're calling it "a hibiscus situation" for our drink in this episode as we discuss the gripping departure from studio system traditions in this humanistic approach to moral conflicts in the face of adversity. We love On the Waterfront and consider it required viewing as it marks the beautiful, revolutionary, and slightly tragic beginning of the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood. So better get watching! Starring Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, and Karl Madden. Cheers! Check us out on the socials and engage with us! Gaz is off doing all things Gaz this week so Karl Madden of the Mac and Forth Podcast graciously allowed himself to be blackmailed into being on. For fulfilling his end of the deal, those pictures will never be released to the general public. They go into their recording setup and gear because there's not really all that much else going on and Guy LOVES talking about that stuff.
BIG thanks to Karl Madden from the Mac and Forth podcast for stepping in and keeping Guy sane…company while Gaz was away. Apple is the company that gives and then takes away. Announcements have been made that they are going to start scanning users Photos library to help stop underage exploitation and while that is a lofty goal, what does it mean in regards to user's privacy that Apple has touted in their press clippings?

The vulnerability is not persistent so for long term attack you would need multiple access to the device.A good strong login password would protect most users and if you have a high valuable data it would be best to use another encryption to protect the data, use file vault to do full disk encryption and then use something like Veracrypt to protect sensitive data.Where I think it will be used is in stolen devices as now there is a way to brute force the user login to wipe the device and then resell. When out and about always keep your device with you if you are a high value target.” Apple made ProtonMail add in-app purchases, even though it had been free for years – The Verge iOS 14 icon set nets designer six figures in six days – 9to5 Mac PSA: No, iOS 14 widgets can't secretly steal private info with your keyboard – 9to5 Mac Apple to extend Apple TV+ free year trials through February 2021 – 9to5 Mac Apple's Internal Networks Were Hacked for Three Months – The Mac Observer Judge denies preliminary injunction to Epic and Fortnite will remain banned from App Store – 9to5 Mac Apple using retail stores as distribution centers to speed up new product deliveries – 9to5 Mac TECHNOLOGY House Democrats push Congress to break up Big Tech monopolies – Engadget Needham: There's no real threat to Apple from regulators – CNBC Microsoft thumbs its nose at Apple with new “app fairness” policy – Ars Technica Microsoft digs at Apple with 10 principles for app store fairness, but they won't apply to Xbox – Geekwire My take is this is BS - The Mac is no less open than Windows and developers can be in the MAS or not. After talking to Mark at Suffolk Macs I decided to replace the ‘blade style' SSD. A little research soon showed that : Apple use a completely proprietary chip in the 2104 model with a non standard pin arrangement. Third party manufacturers have started to make adapters & even chips that mimic the Apple SSD. Plenty of people report problems using these 3rd party chips. I decided to stick with an Apple SSD. my Go-To store for 2nd hand parts is The Bookyard, they even format & install OS X on it for you! I purchased a 256GB recycled module that was pulled from a working MBA and guaranteed for 3 months. This also doubled my storage capacity. I had to buy the tools to take the back off the Air, because though I've taken apart several Macs & have a lot of tools, the Air uses 2.5 mm 5-point Pentalobe screws. Thanks to iFixIt I had a working MBA running 10.14 in about 15 minutes. All in all a good result! Besides the usual stuff, they talk about what carbon neutral means and doesn't mean and how power from all green sources isn't always what you might think it is.

And the lull ends, so there is an Apple event at the end of March and I think they’ve announced the timings for the WWDC ticket lottery. So the End of March event could have a Who’s who of celebrities turning up, I wonder why? Talking about celebrities as Guy is still frightening the locals somewhere in the depth south Karl Madden has joined me.

Gaz and Guy rope Karl Madden back to the show again to talk about iOS 12, new iPhones and watches, another Android phone maker trying to market their stuff off Apple, and where the heck are those AirPower chargers anyway?

Gaz watches cars go zoom so Guy grabs Karl Madden from the Mac & Forth podcast to fill in. This will make up for when Guy is Driving to Chicago is a car going zoom on his way to Macstock and Gaz will do the podcast with someone else...maybe Karl. Technical difficulties wipe out the center section so they had to do it again, but this time is was better...which is not how that usually goes. Spotify, Mojave, disgruntled employees, and so much more!

Recorded 17th June 2018 Well this week it has a bit of an odd one, quite a few stories but not much of any great import. Rogue Amoeba bemoaned the state of Mac hardware, while John Martellaro thinks the omens are good for new hardware soon. Developer Harley Turan showed us some AR that looked like the sort of real world use we've imagined. Apple closed down the lightning port to increase customer security while GrayShift claim to have already bypassed this defence (but then again they would wouldn't they). Gaz is away and Karl Madden is kind enough to jump in. They talk about the double standard of how the tech press treats Apple versus other tech companies. Karl talks about ordering the iPhone X, an Apple Watch with LTE, and health apps. Then weird tangents about Star Trek, media companies, and Guy ranting about paid services with ads.

Again Yes again Guy is away but this time helping his Son Move (well that’s what I think he said! Karl Madden from the Mac and Fourth podcast and Alex Fox joins Gaz to go through the usual MyMac nonsense. The first section has a plethora of MyMac.com articles and the 2nd they have a discussion about the iPad.

Some reputations can’t be fixed (like the hosts of this show) and some get changed over the course of time. One half the GMen (Guy) discuss this with Karl Madden while the other half (Gaz) is off on vacation. Why? Because he can.

We warned you this might happen and it did. Some 6 and a half years later, the GMen have made 350 episodes since starting all that time ago and you’ve stuck with us. Again, sorry. Besides all the usual stuff, we read out all the reasons why you listen and frankly we’re still not convinced that many of you aren’t figments of our shared delusional imaginations. We think it counts anyway. Thank you Chris Leiter, Gerald Tevreden, Elisa Pacelli, Allister Jenks, John Nemo, Clive Hammett, Troy Muller, Warren Sklar, Alex Fox, Michael Lacey, Melissa (MacMommy) Davis, Karl Madden, Gary Apter, Erick Diaz, Andria Schell, Serenak, and Gordon Keenan for taking the time to write in!

Gaz is off doing stuff, so Guy bribed…coerced…threatened…invited (yeah that’s the word) Karl Madden and Mark Chappell from the Essential Mac and Mac and Forth podcasts to come on. Just so he wouldn’t feel UK deprived you know. The main topic being why Apple has held off on updated Macs for so long and various conspiracies behind it. Most of which is probably not true…probably.

On the show this week, hot on the heels from his MyMac 603 appearance is Mr Karl Madden and all the way from his special Apple secret bunker is our resident Canadian Matt. We discuss the future of intel, the future of apple music, the rise of the machines, the need for automated beer deliveries for Karl and how Tim should of responded to wall street. https://www.essentialmac.co.uk/in-the-news/essential-apple-podcast-001/ This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Gaz is off this week so Karl Madden of various other podcasts near and dear to our hearts graciously consented to join Guy on this week’s podcast. Karl, because of your dedication, the photos will not be released to the general public and your check is in the mail. They talk about Apple’s latest financials, butchers that perform eye surgery, how to turn Guy into a 3 year old (like anyone would notice), consumerism, Apple Watches, politics, and just how old can a Mac get and still be productive. Or in Guy’s case, stop being a cheapskate and get new stuff!

Well everyone else is talking about a rumoured Apple March 15th event for the Cupertino company and so we're going to be no different. Joining me again this week is Karl Madden from the Mac and Forth show. You can find the Rampant Mumblings Podcast via iTunes,Spreaker, Sticher, TuneIn, SoundCloud and Opinion. This week we discuss all the rumours pertaining to the rumoured March 15th Apple event, the iPhone SE. Karl points out that is someone trolling us because if you say SE quickly, doesn't that sound like the letter C and in iPhone 5c? The new iPad, will it be new, the longevity and can it ever step out as more than just a tool for consuming. Who's going to pre-order the new Apple watch and will it be announced in March but then ready in the fall, giving those who bought the first generation some time to appreciate it. So the holidays are upon us and how better to celebrate than an extra long podcast with crackly bits courtesy probably from Skype! Even though we said we wouldn’t. Fortunately we can blame Karl Madden from the Mac and Forth podcast who joined the GMen this week. They talk about Star Wars (of course) that Karl and Gaz has seen and Guy hasn’t. Also some stuff about malware and programs that might seem legit but probably aren’t. Ho-ho-ho!
