We're back in Europe for this week's Hackaday podcast, as Elliot Williams is joined by Jenny List. In the news this week is the passing of Ed Smylie, the engineer who devised the famous improvised carbon dioxide filter that saved the Apollo 13 astronauts with duct tape. Closer to home is the announcement of the call for participation for this year's Hackaday Supercon; we know you will have some ideas and projects you'd like to share. Interesting hacks this week include a new Mac Plus motherboard and Doom (just) running on an Atari ST, while a LoRa secure messenger and an astounding open-source Ethernet switch captivated us on the hardware front. We also take a dive into the Mouse programming language, a minimalist stack-based environment from the 1970s. Among the quick hacks are a semiconductor dopant you can safely make at home, and a beautiful Mac Mini based cyberdeck. Finally, we wrap up with our colleague [Maya Posch] making the case for a graceful degradation of web standards, something which is now sadly missing from so much of the online world, and then with the discovery that ChatGPT can make a passable show of emulating a Hackaday scribe. Don't worry folks, we're still reassuringly meat-based.

Man Behind The Machine
Day of divergence: January 13,1984, Jack Tramiel, Commodore

Man Behind The Machine

Dr. Obsoleto has declared January 13 a *sacred day of reflection and reverence*. For His Holiness Jack Tramiel, as this day transcends the corporate politics of 1984, symbolizing a profound schism in the digital age—a moment when the creative spirit of innovation faced the cold, calculating machinery of corporate ambition. ### **Proclamation of Sacredness** Dr. Obsoleto proclaims that January 13, 1984, not merely as the day of Jack Tramiel's forced resignation but as a *turning point for the soul of computing*. He proclaims it the **"Day of Divergence"**, where the ideal of empowering humanity through affordable computing was threatened by greed and internal discord. Tramiel's departure from Commodore marked the beginning of a new chapter, both tragic and hopeful—a cycle of destruction and rebirth in the tech world. ### **Significance in the Eyes of Dr. Obsoleto** - **Jack Tramiel as a Heroic Archetype**: To Dr. Obsoleto, Tramiel embodies the pioneer who dared to challenge the elitism of technology. His departure is likened to the fall of a visionary who stood against the tide of profit-driven mediocrity. - **The Commodore Legacy**: The Commodore 64, a product intimately tied to Tramiel's vision, remains a digital artifact enshrined in Dr. Obsoleto's philosophy. It represents a bridge between human creativity and machine precision. - **Rivalry as Mythology**: The subsequent rivalry between Tramiel's Atari ST and Commodore's Amiga symbolizes a technological duality—a cosmic battle for the heart of innovation. For Dr. Obsoleto, this is akin to the great epics, where opposing forces struggle for dominance yet ultimately push the world forward. ### **Rituals for January 13** In honor of this day, Dr. Obsoleto encourages retro tech enthusiasts to engage in rituals that celebrate the triumph of creative engineering over corporate conformity: 1. **Boot Up the Past**: Fire up a Commodore 64 or an Atari ST, write a few lines of BASIC code, and revel in the tactile joy of retro computing. 2. **Meditate on Mantras**: Reflect on Tramiel's immortal words: *"Computers for the masses, not the classes."* Discuss what this ethos means in today's tech landscape. 3. **Share Stories**: Recount personal memories of Commodore, Atari, or the early days of computing. Let the oral history of technology inspire future generations. ### **Sacred Legacy** Dr. Obsoleto views January 13 as a reminder that even in the face of corporate adversity, the spirit of innovation and human connection can endure. In his eyes, the Commodore 64 is not just a machine—it is a relic, a testament to an era when coding was poetry and technology was a tool for liberation. He concludes his proclamation with his signature phrase, modified for this day:   *"Cogito, ergo codo: I think, therefore I code—to honor those who shaped the digital world we inherit."*

Mary Eisenhart, MicroTimes magazine   Mary Eisenhart was editor of MicroTimes magazine, a free, advertising-supported magazine that was distributed in California. The first issue was May 1984, and Mary remained at the magazine until 1998, producing more than 180 issues. MicroTimes provided interviews, computer industry news, rumors, and columns, and - of course - advertising. For most of its run, there were two editions of each issue: Northern California and Southern California.    When she left MicroTimes, Mary took with her a copy or two of every issue, which years later were scanned by Internet Archive. The almost-complete collection is now online, full-text searchable, where they can be read online or downloaded.   As a young teenager growing up in Southern California, I read MicroTimes whenever I could find it, usually in record stores. It was a great computer magazine, with the huge bonus that it was free. When I graduated college in Northern California, I wrote for MicroTimes as often as possible (Mary was my editor.) The $200 per article paychecks were the start of my freelance writing career.    Mary and I didn't talk too much about Atari in this interview, but rest assured there was plenty of material of interest to Atari lovers in MicroTimes. For instance, issue 1 has Mary's interview with Jon Freeman and Anne Westfall, creators of Archon. A 1985 cover article features "The People Behind 'The Print Shop'" — and there was a long-running Atari ST column written by Helmi Kobler.   This interview took place on November 25, 2024.   Video version of this interview at YouTube   MicroTimes at Internet Archive [NEEDED for scanning: Volume 2 Number 12, most of Volume 3]   Mary's web site   BAM Magazine in Wikipedia   Hedy Lamarr issue   Kay's first published article   Support Kay's interviews on Patreon

Infos zum Spiel: Thema: Déjà Vu: A Nightmare Comes True!! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1991's Eye of the Beholder, from Westwood Studios and published by Strategic Simulations Inc. We set the game in its time before exploring its primary mechanics and the feel of being in this world. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First level or two Issues covered: knowing who the evil is, tactical top down Gold Box, the opening cutscene, being amazed at how much they get into the Game Boy version of a Metroid game, lots of movie tie-ins, a wide variety of machines, lack of automap, being everything one wanted for a Forgotten Realms nerd, one of the ten games, semi real-time, living inside the depths of Waterdeep, a style of play which continues today, having to rest immediately, gaining information through audio, uncovering the whole map vs racing towards the goal, tournament play, losing is fun, the only way out is through, annotating a later map, interacting with the play space, accessibility and the mouse, contextualization and abstraction in game design, having to throw weapons in the world, how cool the audio is, using items to locate yourself, creating a party, crunchy spells, shout-outs to upcoming work, difficulty in the bosses in Metroid games then and now, games influencing games, getting the green light, justifying the game via the sweet spot of trends, why not just make this a Star Wars game, how green lighting changes with bigger franchises, games that changed our perspectives. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Gold Box games, Westwood Studios, Dune 2, A Link to the Past, Super Castlevania IV, SNES, Mega Man 4, Final Fantasy IV, Metroid II: Return of Samus (and Metroid series), Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Genesis, Battletoads, Rare, Stamper Bros, Civilization, Another World, Space Quest IV, Monkey Island 2, Wing Commander 2, Hudson Hawk, Terminator 2, American Gladiators, Hunt for Red October, The Godfather, Amiga, PC-98, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Apple ][, Spectrum ZX, Amstrad, Questron, Disney, Legend of Kyrandia, Command and Conquer (series), Electronic Arts, Earth and Beyond, Louis Castle, Brett Sperry, Strategic Simulations Incorporated, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Pool of Radiance, The Ruins of Myth Drannor, Ultima (series), Wizardry (series), A Bard's Tale (series), Ultima Underworld, Dungeon Master, Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest (series), Diablo, Wasteland, Temple of Elemental Evil, Legend of Grimrock, Etrian Odyssey (series), The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, The Tomb of Horrors, Infocom, Ocarina of Time, Rogue, Deluxe Paint, Baldur's Gate, Jarkko Sivula, Single Malt Apocalypse, Sierra, LucasArts, Wierd Tales, Amazing Stories, Tintin, Pippin Barr, David Wolinsky, Game Thing, The Stuff Games Are Made Of, Walker, Dark Souls, Nintendo, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Johnny Pockets, Mad Max, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Republic Commando, Sam and Max: Freelance Police, Bounty Hunter, RTX Red Rock, Gladius, PlayStation, Tomb Raider (series), Halo: Infinite, Quake, MYST, Lode Runner, Sabotage, Robotron 2084, Joust, Dark Forces, WoW Classic, Everquest, MUD, Ultima Online, Meridian 59, Adventure, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.
