Episode 18 - Popeye Vogelsang (Farside, Your Favorite Trainwreck, etc.)

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2020 64:43

On this episode of SFTF I spoke with Michael Vogelsang, aka "Popeye". Known primarily as the front man for 90's emo crybabies Farside, he's also played with Your Favorite Trainwreck, Ice, Triggerman, The Aquabats, Borderline and others. We talked about major labels and how they factored into the punk scene in the 1990s, the surprising history of Huey Lewis and his love for Swedish death metal band Entombed. Hope you enjoy it!

Episode 17 - Drew Traulsen (Jester Records, Headfirst, Re-Ignition Fanzine)

On this episode of SFTF I have a long chat with Drew Traulsen, punk rock DIY machine, dad and college educator. We discuss the similarities between The Mars Volta and Megadeth, how specific elements of a song can make all the difference, how "punk rock" is and is not defined and how "Kiss Alive II" led to a life long love for music of all shapes and sizes. Drew currently runs Jester Records (https://jester1992.bandcamp.com) and is the driving force behind KZFR's Revolutions Per Minute Radio Program which can be found here: http://kzfr.org/shows/rpm. This one runs a little long (and that's after editing it down quite a bit), but the conversation is a good one and the songs are pretty top notch as well with music from John & Jackie The Eyes Born Without a Face The Mars Volta The Atom Age Virus Hope you dig it.

Episode 16 - Bryan Chu (Farside, General Awesomeness)

On this episode of SFTF I have a conversation with the lovely and always charming Bryan Chu, bassist for Norwegian Black Metal band Farside. Aside from hearing some cool songs you'll learn about using hip hop as an education tool for middle school students, how an artist's life choices impacts their art (or does it?), the parallels between the late 70's English punk scene and the Dub scene coming out of Jamaica, and the importance of always standing up to the man.

Episode 15 - Christopher Smith (Redwood Records , Amendment Eighteen) PART II

Episode 15 of the Songs From the Farside podcast covers the conclusion of my conversation with Christopher Smith from Redwood Records, Amendment Eighteen and other musical endeavors. The topic of "dumb drums" manages to get a callback, lyrics remain incredibly important and the power of good storytelling takes center stage. I also added on a couple songs that have Chris Smith written all over them (in my head at least) that I hope you will enjoy. Stay safe and hope you like the show!

On this mini episode you're treated to 3 funk tunes from the 70s . . . ok, two from the 70s and one from 1983. It's a quick episode, but one guaranteed to get you up off your feet.

Episode 14 - Christopher Smith (Redwood Records, Amendment Eighteen) - PART ONE

My guest on this episode is Christopher Smith who, in the 1990s and early 2000’s ran and operated Redwood Records, a record label that was everything great about independent record labels. As a musician Christopher played with several bands including hardcore supergroup Amendment Eighteen, a band made up of guys from such Orange County hardcore legends as Outspoken, Insted and Chorus of Disapproval. We talked for a long time and there was simply too much good content for me to edit this down to a manageable 1 hour podcast. So, this will be broken into two parts, today being part one.

Jesse Karassik is one of the guys behind the Tacos & Turntables podcast which covers a wide array of pop culture. Jesse and I have very different musical tastes which made for a great conversation about music. We talked about the merits of Steely Dan, the similar arcs of Radiohead and Metallica and how emotions dictate the value of a musical work.

Episode 12 - Brian Howell (Triggerman, No For An Answer, The Pollen Collective)

Hello, this is Kevin Murphy and welcome to Songs from the Farside, Episode number 12. My guest this time around is Brian Howell. Brian is a father, husband, educator and mentor and all around good dude. In the 1990’s Brian played bass for the very underrated California band Triggerman and toured with legendary hardcore band No For An Answer. These days, when not tending to one of the afore-mentioned descriptions he can be found restoring old cars and playing bass for the Americana inspired band The Pollen Collective who, in 2019, played over 60 shows. I’ve known Brian for years and it was great to talk to him about music and what it means to him. We talked about soft rock in the 1970's, about music as a healing tool and the importance of really listening to music and not just hearing it. We also talked about how music opened doors for us and exposed us to new worlds that we might not otherwise have ever known about. We did not talk about rare Venom singles or GG Allin records, but that’s probably for the best. As always - MOM, do not look up GG Allin. #triggerman #noforananswer #OCHC #thepollencollective

Episode 11 - Sandy Yang (The Red Krayola)

Sandy Yang is one of my oldest friends (in terms of having known each other - not age haha). She is an artist, graphic designer, singer, guitarist, drummer and all around stand-up person. Her work with The Red Krayola, Lady Noise and on her own is innovative, thought-provoking and unique and her musical taste is as broad and eclectic as can be making her the perfect first guest for the new format of SFTF. Sandy gave me five songs to check out: "Ark of the Covenant" by The Congos "Final Day" by Young Marble Giants "Sketch for Summer" by The Durutti Column "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" by Ryuichi Sakamoto "Clear Vision" by L-Seven I also provided her with a song for us to discuss: "Clean Up Woman" by Betty Wright Hope you enjoy the songs and our conversation.

Transmission 7 is loud one so hold on to your balls. We take a look at Tar, the noisy band from Chicago that played metal guitars (like made of metal, not like shiny black and pointy) and made a huge racket through some pretty little amps. We reminisce about Sweden's In Solitude, whose third and final LP "Sister" helped usher in the so-called New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal. We dig into the first Die Kreuzen LP, a rip-roaring and innovative take on American hardcore circa 1984. And we close things up with an appreciation for the Laughing Hyenas' 1990 masterpiece "Life of Crime". Albums explored are: Tar "Solution 8" 7" (1991) Tar "Clincher" 12" (1993) Tar "Toast" LP (1993) Tar "Over and Out LP (1995) In Solitude "Sister" LP (2013) Die Kreuzen "Die Kreuzen" LP (1984) Laughing Hyenas "Life of Crime" LP (1990) As always you can subscribe via Podomatic, Apple Podcasts, Google Play and Spotify. We also dig into the weird world of psychedelia with Bobb Trimble, the grim and sordid world of murder via Nick Cave and The Bad Seed's "Murder Ballads" and the pioneering electronica of Japan's Yellow Magic Orchestra.
