Most leaders think the next level of their career requires more strategy, stronger communication, or better executive presence. Sometimes it does. But at a certain level, the bigger challenge is expanding your capacity for discomfort. Rejection. Disapproval. Uncertainty. Exposure. Standing alone. Difficult feedback. Let's talk about it. This is our daily Tech and Business Report. KCBS's MARGIE SHAFER spoke with Bloomberg's Matt Day. In the midst of all the cheers for the class of 2026 graduating seniors are sharing their disapproval towards the overwhelming use and praise of AI at their commencements. Now, Microsoft is responding.
In this edition of Trend Shapiro’s Fortnite Foray, Jack and Miles discuss Donald Trump’s disapproval rating reaching an all-time high of 58%, along with Trump skipping Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding. They also break down Starbucks’ latest advertising controversy, which echoes the company’s infamous 2002 “Collapse Into Cool” misstep, in which a poster promoting two new beverages drew criticism for imagery reminiscent of the September 11 attacks. The new campaign was tied to the release of a new oversized tumbler called The Tank, launched on May 18th and branded as “Tank Day.” The problem: May 18th is the anniversary of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising in South Korea, when the military-controlled government used tanks to suppress pro-democracy demonstrations. Next, they discuss the shooting outside the White House, which was covered by several media members who were filming at the time and the administration's use of the shooting as a justification for the White House ballroom. Next, in an effort to slow subscriber losses at The Daily Wire, Ben Shapiro streamed himself playing Fortnite for the first time. Finally, the day after the final episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert guest-hosted Only in Monroe, a public-access show from Monroe, Michigan, featuring guests Jack White, Jeff Daniels, and Steve Buscemi.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Donald Trump just got hit with an absolutely crushing poll from Fox News. Disapproval of his handling of the economy is at an all time high. His ratings on inflation are staggeringly awful. Historically friendly voter groups—whites, rural Americans, the working class—are all turning away from him in surprising numbers. It's no accident that on Thursday, Trump let out a long, rambling diatribe, demanding Republicans pass his onerous voter suppression legislation. Critically, Trump said straight out that if they do, Democrats will “never be elected again.” Trump admitted that the whole point of his bill is to ensure one-party rule in perpetuity, in the GOP's favor—exactly why he wants it passed before the midterms. We talked to MS NOW opinion editor James Downie, author of a piece on Trump's deepening unpopularity. We discuss why Trump is losing both his base and the new voters he won in 2024, what opportunities that offers Democrats, whether the bottom is really falling out for good, and why Trump can't cheat his way out this time. The current war with Iran is significantly less popular than the Vietnam War was at its lowest point. Polling suggests an 80% disapproval rate, compared to the 60-70% disapproval seen during the depths of the Vietnam conflict. The administration is perceived as being trapped in a "sunk cost fallacy," pursuing a failing course of action to protect the leader's reputation, similar to the "one day at a time" strategy that led to the "shambolic defeat" in Vietnam. The sources note a historical pattern of the U.S. successfully overthrowing regimes only to create failed states, citing Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Iraq, and Ukraine as examples. 3/31968 VIETNAM WAR

IHeart political analyst Gary Dietrich will join us to discuss this and more. Comedian J-L Cauvin will stop by to talk about his new project.

In this episode of Behind the Prop, Bobby Doss, Wally Mulhearn, and guest Jay Robinson tackle one of the most stressful moments in a pilot's journey—receiving an FAA checkride disapproval—and, more importantly, how to recover from it. The conversation starts by normalizing the experience, emphasizing that disapprovals happen at every level of aviation and do not define a pilot's ability or future. Wally provides insight from the examiner's perspective, explaining that a disapproval simply means a standard was not met on that day—not that the pilot is incapable. The group highlights that anxiety, small mistakes, or even external life factors can contribute to an unsatisfactory outcome. The episode then shifts to actionable recovery steps. First, pilots must fully understand the debrief and letter of disapproval, ensuring they know exactly what needs to be corrected. Next comes ownership—accepting responsibility as pilot in command—followed by focused retraining that targets specific deficiencies rather than starting from scratch. The hosts emphasize the importance of confidence, smart preparation, and even taking time to decompress before a retest. They also reinforce that most pilots successfully pass on the next attempt. Ultimately, the episode reframes disapproval as a powerful learning opportunity—one that can produce safer, more self-aware, and more resilient pilots.

Fishing host Matt Watson has been quick to voice disapproval with a bill proposing to remove almost all minimum legal-size limits for commercial fishing operators. The proposed laws would apply to a range of popular fish species, including snapper, trevally, butterfish and tarakihi - and recreational fishers will still have to follow all current minimum size limit rules. Watson says this won't address destructive fishing methods - and that these terms are 'madness'. "The notion that - well, these fish are gonna die anyway, we might as well keep them and sell them is ridiculous, because the reason that there is a size limit is because fish have to be able to get to reproductive size to be able to restock the ocean. So instead of addressing - stop catching undersized fish, you're legitimatising it." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this week's Poll Hub: After a historically long State of the Union this week, we're asking if President Trump helped himself as new polling captures how lousy Americans are feeling about Trump's priorities and the direction of his administration. Disapproval remains a key part of the story, but the data goes deeper, highlighting where the public sees alignment, where there's frustration, and how these views differ across political and demographic groups. In the second segment, we turn to an issue that helps drive those gloomy polls: grocery prices. Even as grocery inflation has calmed a bit, price increases since 2000 are still shaping how people shop and spend. From cutting back on certain items to seeking out deals and changing routines, Americans are making adjustments in real time. We explore what the latest data says about these behaviors and what they signal about consumer confidence and economic outlook. And, for our fun fact... would you dine in the dark? Americans don't seem inclined to dabble in this type of restaurant experience. Listen to the full episode: maristpoll.com/podcast

There's belief among experts that New Zealand depends on the World Health Organisation for disease prevention and health promotion. The US officially withdrew from the WHO last week. Now Winston Peters has questioned the organisation's effectiveness and how it's using its funding. Former WHO director Dr Rob Beaglehole says while the WHO has room to improve, New Zealand ultimately benefits from membership - especially given that future pandemics are 'inevitable'. "The only way to respond effectively, apart from closing borders for a short time, is going to be to work with other countries together." In this powerful moment from See You In Court, attorney Lynne Borsuk shares her deep disappointment with law firms that capitulated under political pressure, failing to uphold their professional duty to represent all clients — even the unpopular ones. “In their fear, they've created a dynamic that is deeply unhealthy for our democracy. I disapprove of their capitulation. Time will show it was unwise to capitulate.” This clip is a call to courage — a reminder that the rule of law depends on lawyers who stand firm, not those who bow to intimidation.

Let's talk about the challenges of navigating disapproval and emotional reactions in relationships. You'll learn about differentiation — maintaining one's identity while being in a relationship — and hear about ways to manage emotional responses. We'll look at the significance of self-respect, personal growth, and keeping the courage to stand firm in your truth, even when faced with someone else's discontent. Key Takeaways: Healing from infidelity involves becoming your truest self. Disapproval can trigger deep-seated fears of rejection. Differentiation means staying true to yourself in relationships. Emotional reactions should be managed before responding. It's okay to feel sad when others are upset with you. Self-awareness is crucial for personal growth. Supporting yourself is not selfish; it's courageous. You can hold space for others' feelings without losing yourself. Grief for the current situation is different from guilt. Trusting yourself leads to healthier relationships. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
What If Obedience Isn't the Same as Respect? We all want to raise good kids — respectful, obedient, and successful. But what if obedience is just compliance… no connection? In this episode, I dive deep into the final chapter of Netflix's Adolescence, and the heartbreaking unraveling of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy whose silent pain led to tragedy. His father, Eddie, never saw it coming. Why? Because the connection was missing, even though he thought he was doing everything “right.” I open up about how even committed, hardworking dads like us can miss the quiet red flags our kids are waving. We explore how our need to discipline, protect, and “fix” can sometimes get in the way of the one thing our kids need most: to feel seen and safe. This episode isn't about shame. It's about waking up. Because your influence as a dad doesn't come from authority—it comes from emotional safety. If you've ever believed “my kid is doing fine,” this might be the most eye-opening 20 minutes you'll spend all year. I'll also give you a practical framework to help you ask better questions, create deeper emotional connections, and build a relationship your kids will trust—especially when things get tough. Become the best husband and leader you can: www.thedadedge.com/mastermind In this episode, I share: Why “How was your day?” might be the weakest way to check in The 3 fatherhood defaults that kill connection: Distance, Disapproval, and Discipline How to use the CARE method (Curiosity, Affirmation, Repair, Expectation) to reconnect with your child Why our kids confuse disconnection with disinterest—and how to fix it The real reason obedience without emotional connection doesn't build trust Here's what research supports about the power of action and intention: Studies show that couples who engage in regular, small acts of kindness report a 28% increase in relationship satisfaction. Research indicates that setting specific, shared goals increases the likelihood of improved communication and intimacy by 35%. Prioritizing quality time has been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness in relationships by 20%. If you're ready to stop waiting for motivation and start actively building a stronger, more connected marriage, this episode is for you. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on Trump's neo-con pivot for his administration, Israel's failure to meet a US deadline to boost aid to Gaza (and the unlikelihood of repercussions), calls to annex the West Bank, final tallies on the US Senate race, the GOP's House majority, and civil unrest in Haiti, also touching on the importance of organizing in the wake of this election, and diving deep into Congress' ongoing fight to pass the “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act” which would set the stage for Trump to abuse any non-profit that acts against him. Next, they parse through some of Trump's overwhelmingly hawkish, neo-conservative choices for his administration, including notorious supporters of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, respectively, Marco Rubio and Mike Waltz. They also touch on Trump's ability to differentiate himself from the “establishment” GOP, despite wanting all of the same things, and tackle his über-concerning agenda against higher education in the US. They wrap up the free half with the importance of being militant about the lessons the Left (and Democrats) learn from this election, and discuss the future direction of the show. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Gilbert from California about what to expect from a GOP trifecta, unpack AOC's Q-and-A with joint AOC-Trump voters, and explore Israel's unsurprising response to the US election (more exuberant, unchecked violence). They also talk with RM Brown about his work with the Tim Pool Research Foundation, before doing their own deep dive into Sam's Halloweekend appearance on Tim Pool, including Tim's open acknowledgment of his refusal to do any research beyond reading a subheading. Kevin from Columbus touches on the “your body, my choice” trend, and the importance of community organizing, and the MR Team unpacks RFK's wild pitch for a spot in the Trump administration, with some help from Kowalski from Nebraska, plus, your calls and IMs!
