Any self respecting devotee of fuzz and farfisa will genuflect at the mention of Talk Talk by The Music Machine, the brain busting bombshell that exploded in 1966 at the height of the garage band culture. Along with Psychotic Reaction by The Count V, and 96 Tears by ? And The Mysterians, The Music Machine ruled the airwaves that year. My middle school band, The Full House, could play 96 tears, but Talk Talk was a bronco that was harder to ride. And, the guttural snarl of lead singer Sean Bonniwell, as he spit out the red meat of his teenage angst, was an inimitable storm surge of passion. But, as so often happens, the complications of keeping a band together pulled at the group's threadbare fabric, and by '69 the band was in shreds, and Sean was on his own. This cut, Absolutely Positively is off the album THE BONNIWELL MUSIC MACHINE (because he was the only one left), but features some of the original players before they split. After that, the Music Machine was no more, and Sean soldiered on through an unforgiving solo career. But, I'm thrilled hearing the roiling organ arpeggios on the verses as Sean expresses the ambivalence of not knowing what he wants, but then, emerging with determination, as he stands firm during the choruses, declaring: “Absolutely Positively I want your love!”.

Interview with Tim Lee & Susan Bauer Lee of Bark Bark is a drum set, a Fender 6-string bass, two voices and more hooks than Bill Dance keeps in his tackle box. Loud is their new album. Bark comprises the collaborative duo of Susan Bauer Lee (drums and vocals) and Tim Lee (Fender VI bass and vocals) based in Water Valley, Mississippi. Susan has played and toured with Tim the past two decades with Bark and Tim Lee 3. Tim got his start in Missisippi's The Windbreakers before going on to tour as part of Mitch Easter' Let's Active and seminal college rock band Swimming Pool Q's. Loud is being releasedby Dial Back Sound / Cool Dog Sound on 12” LP vinyl, CD, digital download and stream September 5. “If you can fill the unforgiving three and a half minutes with two hundred and ten seconds of Rock n Roll, yours is the earth and everything that is in it.” I think Rudyard Kipling said that. What do you do when you don't know what to do? In the face of commercial failure, heartbreaking loss, environmental collapse, grief, one too many beers. You make a record . . . and you make it loud. It starts with “Love Minus Action,” and the lyrics “I'm a loser not a fighter.” Lennon couldn't have said it better. But the real story here is that you can't lose if you don't play the game. But what do you do if you don't play the game? You carry on without the baggage of giving a shit about the game. You dance on the graves of the forgotten winners and you play for the regulars. There's a field in North Mississippi. Several years from now. After the screens have all gone dark. The lush green glows in the dull light of a cloudy afternoon. In the middle of the field there is a drum set and two amplifiers. An old generator rattles in the silence. A woman sits at the drum stool and fixes the mic to reach her lips. A man tunes his Bass VI guitar and twists the volume knob all the way up. A ragged crowd gathers from out of the woods. A rumble of distant thunder rolls through the sky. Then the snare cracks and the band plays on. It's Bark, and they're playing us out just before the rain. They're playing Loud; it's the distillation of Rock n Roll—the beat, the riff, the words and the voice. The things that have always been there from “Psychotic Reaction” to “Satisfaction.” Bandcamp: dialbacksound.bandcamp.com bark-bark-loud.bandcamp.com Website: bark-loud.com Facebook: @Bark.Bark.Loud Instagram: @bark.timlee3

Lenny Kaye has secured his place in rock history as the Patti Smith Group's longtime guitarist, but he also helped define rock history with one of the most influential compilation albums of all time: Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965–1968. To create that 1972 double album, Kaye pulled together a largely obscure collection psychedelic and garage-rock songs that made a new kind of sense together, from the Electric Prunes' throbbing “I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)” to the guitar freakery of the Count Five's “Psychotic Reaction” to Sagittarius's gently trippy “My World Fell Down.” Now Kaye has expanded upon his work with a 5-LP Nuggets box released by Rhino on Record Store Day. What were his must-haves this time around? How do these songs hit differently 50-plus years later? How has Nuggets affected Kaye's own music-making, and how do his writing sessions with Patti Smith go?

"GERMINATING IN THE SOIL"THE WEB OF SOUND by The Seeds (GNP Crescendo, 1966)1966 was probably the high water mark year for Garage Rock: There was Gloria by Shadows of Knight; Psychotic Reaction by Count V; Talk Talk by the Music Machine; We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet by The Blues Magoos, and the Eldorado of the genre: 96 Tears by ? And the Mysterians - just imagine all that Fuzz -Farfisa ripeness! Even yours truly at age 13 had his band The Full House covering all those tunes at the Princeton Hospital Fete that summer. But the undisputed King of Garage Rock was Sky Saxon of The Seeds (one of the house bands at Bido Lito's in Hollywood - also home of Love), and this recording The Web of Sound has all the elements of what one critic called “snotty aggression with some heavier psychedelic flourishes” that made garage rock the indelible statement that it was. The 14 minute “Up in her Room” , with its penetrating bottleneck guitar work by Cooker, has been compared to The Velvet Underground's “Sister Ray”, and the influence of The Seeds, like their east coast counterparts, the Velvets, was enormous. Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and many other credit Sky and his band to be their inspirations.Sky, born Richard Elven Marsh to a Mormon family in 1937, had traveled a long distance spiritually when he joined the Yahowha vegetarian cult following Father Yod, taking the additional name of “Sunlight.” Enroute, he masterminded some of the most infectiously growling proto- punk ever, and on this set he leads us through its many mansions with slimy yet sinuous renditions of Tripmaker, Farmer John, and Rolling Machine.Interesting note: this cartridge is not an 8, but a 4 track - the format that preceded the 8. The carts have no pinch roller, and the tape is engaged by a lever on the player. In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week's episode is for the fashion plates: we play & discuss four songs about “krazy klothes.” First up is Arnie “Woo Woo” Ginsburg and the 3Ds advertising a local clothier in “Pal Mal Rock” (3:33) – listen up so you'll know what to wear when you go to the hops! Next up is The Royal Teens and their immortal treatise on the proper display of the gluteus maximus: “Short Shorts.” (35:58) Who wears them? Do they like them? And, even though they tell you not to wear white after Labour Day, the Majorettes are firmly in favour of their baby's “White Levis” (1:06:39) (and his tennis shoes, and his surfing hat, and his big plaid Pendleton shirt.) Last but never least, Brenton Wood (1:28:53) returns (he appeared in Episode 2 – “Psychotic Reaction”) to soundtrack your strut down the street in your funky ensemble– but is it too much? Never!!

In the first episode of a new series, we flip over the Count Five's 1966 hit “Psychotic Reaction” (discussed in Episode 2), to check out its B-side, “They're Gonna Get You.” And we think it might be even crazier than the A-side!! Is this a simple song about a young rocker being afraid of the barbershop – or something even more scary? We make the discovery early in the series that B-sides are often cryptic and hard to decode messages from deep within the Zeitgeist, so skip your next class and listen to this history lesson instead …

This week's episode is not for the faint of heart. In this edition of Psychotic Reaction (where we react to garage rock songs we have not heard before) we're talking about a wild growler by the 14th Wray which came out in 1990. The song is lo-fi, the lyrics are controversial, and the singer is pretty aggro. But it's a wild ride, and along the way we mention Margaret Atwood, fanzines, spaceships, and the mystery of the band's name and backing vocals.

THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW Season 5, Episode 21 Release your head from the world Keep yourself underground No one understands your mind Grown tired of screaming And talking to the walls No one understands your mind In this edition of the podcast, we delve even deeper into the realms of madness, exploring the psychosis of a patient long dead, but immortalized by a training film recorded decades ago, in the late-50s/early-'60s. Though he has no name, his struggle is our struggle. The balance between sanity and insanity teeters upon a line of dominoes that can topple for any reason, at any time. Enjoy the show...
