What makes a great frontman? A technically perfect voice? Good looks? Someone who can work the stage and crowd? Someone who oozes personality, charisma, and showmanship? Does your mind instantly go to classic frontmen like Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, or Robert Plant? This week, we look at some of those frontmen who carried the torch during the classic alternative era. One of those guys is this week's Third Lad, Adam Sherman, the frontman for Boston power-pop rockers Private Lightning, who released an excellent underrated self-titled album for A&M Records in 1980. Following Private Lightning, Adam was the lead singer and songwriter in Americana band The Souls and a member of Boston rock n' roll institution Nervous Eaters. Adam's song from the last Nervous Eaters album, "Don't Need To Make You Mine" was named as the "Coolest Song in the World" on Little Steven's Underground Garage in 2024. Adam has also released the acclaimed solo albums Songbird, River of Dreams, and Triangle Sky - with a brand new record, Sorrows And Smiles, out in February. Learn more about your ad choices. Hello to my loyal listening audience across the inter webs, I come to you in typical fashion as a lonesome loser on this holiday for lovers. To be completely honest I was never one to buy the whole sham about Valentines Day. I feel like Valentine's Day was made for the bros that can't cover the spread. A much needed buffer day in many relationships, I'm sure. But, me sitting here in my disc jockey chair, I see it as bogus propaganda subjugated upon the clueless lower and middle class by big chocolate and flower corporations. Maybe that's why I'm scratching my cheese alone in a room sorting Pokemon cards on Valentines Day. But who am I? Not Copernicus, that's for sure. Don't follow my philosophy or adhere to my theories unless you want to be a similarly neglected middle aged man holding his knees in a podcast room with full plans to retrieve a pint of ice cream immediately after this upload and watch Indiana Jones alone with my dog on Valentine's Day. Insider baseball.. The most expensive record that I currently own is a 2015 RSD release of Jay Electronica's Exhibit A and Exhibit C. The picture disc featuring a picture of Nikola Tesla that only pressed 1,250 copies. I noticed that Jay Electronica is doing a show near me next month and I am purchasing VIP meet and greet tickets to hopefully get this thing autographed and tell Jay that his music has moved my life in a positive light. Super sick move, kid. Thank you as always for listening to my ramblings and music selections. I hope you had a great Valentine's DayYour Host with the Most,DJ Witwicka Juan Don

When you're first experience with a band is seeing a publicity photo of them and each member is wearing an oversized, paper mache mask for a head, you either run for the hills or start exploring more. At Roots Music Rambler, we dive in head first. That's the typical first impression one encounters when finding the Atlanta-based band Del Roscoe. Their new self-titled album came out this fall and the sonic and visual aesthetic the group presents is enough to rouse curiosity. The band calls itself a “gothic indie Americana band.” And the experience aligns with that description. Co-founder Robert Lee, the group's primary songwriter, and drummer Matt McKinney took time from their bowling night recently to dial in to Roots Music Rambler from the front of their car. We only point that out because it totally aligns with the experience of Del Roscoe, a band named after a pair of dogs: Del and Roscoe. We talked about how the band came together, the drivers behind the look and sound, the new album, and the political undertones of songs on the album like Black Hats. As one might expect, the conversation took some twists and turns and on a couple of occasions, nearly devolved into ridiculous. But all of it was a load of fun.  This episode might be one of the more entertaining we've had in a while. Aubrey is a small-town girl with big dreams, growing up on the Mason-Dixon line between Maryland and Pennsylvania. From an early age, her parents recognized her talent by nicknaming her "Songbird" and encouraged her at every turn. Determined to support Aubrey's passion, her mom even sold her home to help her attend Belmont University in Nashville. Music has always been the center of her life, from school talent shows and musical theater to local gigs, writer's rounds and televised performances, including a Christmas special on a major streamer. Now a junior at Belmont, Aubrey is developing her sound, which is a soulful blend of country, gospel and blues, influenced by artists such as Carrie Underwood and Chris Stapleton. Living on her uncle's farm, she draws inspiration from nature and the simplicity of small-town life. With years of performing, writing and growing as an artist, Aubrey is finally stepping onto the stage she admired as a child, ready to share her heart and talent with the world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

This episode needs no introduction: Shooter Jennings joins Donnie and Dave to discuss his dad's cache of recordings, the process of bringing together three albums' worth of new Waylon Jennings music, and his feelings about the first installment, Songbird. Shooter talks at length about the discovery of Waylon's previously unreleased music, his relationship with his legendary dad and his own role as a father of two. This one was big for the Country Music Dads, as there couldn't be a more perfect topic for this podcast. Show Notes1:24 -- Shooter tells us about the discovery of these songs and how the Songbird project came together. 6:12 -- Dave says it was surreal to hear these songs in 2025. Shooter felt the same way. And then he knew he had to share this with others so they could have the same experience. 8:26 -- The Myth vs. The Man: Shooter explores what fans might be able to take from these projects. 10:42 -- Shooter's childhood on the road and why he's tired at shows regardless of how much sleep he gets. 12:20 -- Waylon the Artist vs. Waylon the Dad. Shooter kept true to the art but modernized it a bit — “letting the music on the tape talk.” That said, the experience of going through this chapter of his dad's life was very special to Shooter. 20:07 -- As a producer, the process of this project was a bit different for Shooter because Waylon is no longer with us; he is his father, and there was so much more material than usual. So he wanted to make it last to “make it like Waylon is here for a minute.” 23:00 -- Donnie asked about how relationships impact Shooter's production style. He specifically pointed to Turnpike Troubadour's last two albums and the fan backlash after Cat in the Rain. Shooter's direct and honest answer provides an interesting view into his producing style.28:58 -- The Dads ask Shooter how the production on the next albums fit together and how they tell a story. We also learn that there are several other projects to come from this collection of recordings, including songs by his mother, Jessi Colter. It's like a little Marvel Universe of Waylon Jennings, they joke. But wouldn't that be cool?30:40 -- How this project impacts Shooter's legacy and his kids' vision of him. 36:30 -- What's next for Shooter? He's working with Charley Crockett and BJ Barham of American Aquarium again.Thank you for listening. This week, Donnie speaks with Ryan Posner, a Los Angeles-based bass player, side man and musical director, about balancing his home and professional life, how to define country music, why it is important to push art forward and how bass players make great dads. They dive deep into the value of his current project, the nearly weekly Y'all Star Revue, a showcase at the original Desert 5 Spot in Hollywood. This event highlights the best local and touring country music talent who are on the verge of breaking out. Show Notes1:50 -- Ryan's origin story: From a 16-year-old rocker to figuring out playing country music right before the pandemic. He tells Donnie that his first concert was Willie Nelson at age five and his second concert was Weird Al opening for the Monkees in the early 1980s -- which really summarized his musical existence. Until he watched Ken Burns' Country Music documentary.6:38 -- Bass players make great dads: Ryan has always been attracted, and it seems that the Country Music Dads are attracted to bass players. Perhaps the kind of person who likes to play bass is also the kind of person who wants to be a dad. 8:58 -- How do you truly balance the parenting? Being honest is a good start. 10:40 -- What is The Y'all Star Revue, and what is the impact of this program on country music?17:25 -- What is real country music? Ryan ends the debate of what country music is and what it is not. His platform is to share new music with new audiences. 20:19 -- Freedom from Choice: Ryan hopes that his new curated platform can help bring so many different kinds of music together to help develop a new experience outside of the over-saturation of the Los Angeles music scene. He prefers “freedom from choice” rather than “freedom of choice.” 22:19 -- More Debate on What Makes Real Country Music: But does this kind of platform push country music too far? Ryan says no. There is no line too far. Country music evolves just like every other kind of music, and the only person who can define “real” country music for that person is that person. 30:55 -- The Dad Life Sound Check: Ryan brings “Funny How Time Slips Away” by Willie Nelson, and Donnie talked about Waylon's “Songbird.”38:15 -- THE LIGHTNING ROUND, which gets completely derailed by the last question about the one concert you could attend at any time. 254 - 8 Common Mistakes Beginner Guitarists Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Beginner Guitar Academy

In this episode, Paul Andrews breaks down the eight most common mistakes he sees beginner guitarists make and, most importantly, how you can avoid or fix them. If you feel like your guitar progress has stalled or you're unsure what's holding you back, this comprehensive guide will put you back on track. From practicing without a plan to quitting too soon, Paul covers it all, offering actionable advice and resources along the way.Key Topics Covered1. Practicing Without a PlanMany beginners “noodle” aimlessly, not making real progress.Solution: Structure your practice sessions, even if it's just five or ten minutes per skill.Resource: Practice plans available in the Resources section of the Beginner Guitar Academy dashboard.2. Skipping the BasicsJumping straight to fun riffs and songs without building strong foundational skills (like chord changes, picking, and strumming) slows your progress.Solution: Invest time in fundamental skills. They're the foundation for everything else you learn.3. Ignoring Rhythm and TimingFocusing on the right notes but not on playing them in time leads to unrecognisable music.Solution: Use a metronome or backing track from early on. Internalise the beat by tapping your foot or nodding your head.4. Avoiding Barre Chords and Hard ShapesMany skip tough chords (like barre or C chord) because they're challenging.Solution: Face the hard shapes in manageable steps—power chords, then mini-barres, then full barre chords.Resource: Check out the Power Chords and Barre Chords workshops in the Academy.5. Not Playing Complete SongsLearning only riffs and song parts can be fun, but it leaves you stuck.Solution: Commit to learning full songs!Beginner-friendly song suggestions:“Songbird” by Oasis“Knockin' on Heaven's Door” (Bob Dylan version)“Come As You Are” by Nirvana“Zombie” by The Cranberries“Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes6. Building Bad Technique HabitsCommon issues include collapsing fingers, muted strings, and stiff strumming.Solution: Slow things down and focus on form. Recording yourself and seeking teacher feedback can help spot and fix these issues.7. Comparing Yourself to OthersSocial media or peer comparison can rob you of joy.Solution: Compare your progress only to your past self. Chart small, incremental improvements.8. Quitting Too SoonNinety per cent of beginners quit within the first year due to unrealistic expectations or a perceived lack of time.Solution: Consistency is key—just a few minutes a day leads to breakthrough progress.Community News & ResourcesSeptember Live Member Q&A: Recording now available in the Academy's dashboard (video and audio formats).Practice Plan Downloads: Find them in the Resources section to help you organise and structure your weekly practice.Workshops: “Get to Grips with Power Chords” and “Get to Grips with Barre Chords” are available to Academy members.Key TakeawaysMistakes are normal! But with proper planning, patience, and guidance, you can overcome or avoid them entirely.Consistency and structured practice are your secret weapons. If you need a clear, step-by-step roadmap, join Beginner Guitar Academy with a 14-day trial for $1 at
