The Nigerian singer, songwriter and bandleader and Seun Kuti keeps alive the Afrobeat tradition founded by his legendary father, Fela Kuti, back in the 1970s. In fact, when Fela died in 1997, it was Seun, his youngest son, who took over the band, now called Egypt 80. Like his late father, Seun Kuti takes on topics like government corruption and corporate greed in his songs, setting his lyrics and his blazing sax solos to an insistent dance beat. Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 play tunes from their most recent album, Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), in-studio. Set list: 1. Stand Well Well 2. Love and Revolution 3. Emi Aluta

Etuk Ubong is without a doubt one of the most electrifying trumpet players in Africa.Seun Kuti himself called him ‘one of the best things to come out of Lagos,' and it's easy to see why. Etuk picked up the trumpet at 14 and hasn't looked back since. What sets him apart is his fusion of Afrobeat, Highlife, Jazz, and the traditional drumming of the Ekombi, creating his signature sound, 'Earth Music.' It's a captivating mix of spiritual, high-energy, and deeply moving rhythms.I had the chance to sit down with Etuk before his set at the Dürchluften Festival 2024 and our conversation was nothing short of inspiring. We dove into his musical influences, deep connection to Fela Kuti, jazz studies at the University of Cape Town, and how he crafted his unique genre: Earth Music. We also touched on the importance of documenting your journey online, and Etuk had some incredible insights to share on that. Chatting with him was a spiritual experience, and I hope you'll feel the same listening to the episode.

You are about to hear history in the making as we mark the first recording binding the musical royalty of the Kuti Afrobeat kings and the premiere reggae Marley clan. Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 unleashed the first song from their upcoming new album Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) with “Dey,” featuring four-time Grammy winner Damian Marley, an undulating raw energy of Afrobeat with the sensuous reggae cadence. Delve into a moment where African unity and art build a metaphoric bridge.

Seun Kuti on his Father Fela's Legacy, Matriarchy in His Family, What it Means to be a Pan-African Revolutionary, Racism in North Africa, and More. * 3, 2, 1… Live from the iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem, our next storyteller hails from Lagos, Nigeria. Seun Kuti is an artist and the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He has spent most of his life preserving and extending his father's political and musical legacy as the leader of his father's former band, Egypt 80. Since his father's passing, Seun has revived The Movement of the People. M.O.P is a Nigerian left-wing pan-African political movement started by Fela and thanks to Seun's grassroots efforts, it's been making a come back. We sat down at the Apollo Theater shortly before he and his band perform their show “Africa Now!” In this episode, we talk about how Fela's legacy has been misinterpreted and celebrated, the role of matriarchy in the Kuti family and how this was the foundation of their anti-colonial work. We dig into the pan-African revolution, the trap of being a rebel without a cause, addressing North African racism and more. PS: Remember the artist Mumu Fresh, who scored our “REP” investigation? She has some questions for Seun, artist to artist, and so we passed those along too. Welcome back to Podcast Noor. * Transcripts + Listening: www.ays.media/podcastnoor/seunkuti *
