Ricky McKinnie, the leader of the Blind Boys of Alabama, was born and raised in Atlanta, where he got his start singing in the church alongside his mother. Not long after that, while still in his teens, he embarked on a career as a singer and a drummer, often performing with a band called the Soul Searchers. Around the age of 20, he began to lose his eyesight, but as Ricky says, he never lost his vision. After playing with the Blind Boys of Alabama from time to time, he became an official member of the group in 1989, and since then, in various roles, he's helped lead the band through years of success, fame, and Grammy Awards. Now the group is the subject of a fascinating new book called Spirit of the Century: Our Own Story. Sid talks to Ricky about why the Blind Boys have endured for so long, their hit version of “Amazing Grace,” what he's learned over decades as a blind musician, and the song that always gets the crowd out of their seats. Less glamorous than jade, gold or silver ware, pottery gets less attention at museum exhibitions. Archaeologists, however, argue that pottery is the most important cultural relic for understanding human prehistory.Unlike gold or jade, most ceramics are practical and designed for daily use. Pottery thus can offer a well-rounded view of the era it came from.In the recent Palace Museum exhibition “The Making of Zhongguo – Origins, Developments and Achievements of Chinese Civilization,” a ceramic piece stood out – a painted vase with a human head sculpted at the rim. While viewing this painted vase, one can feel instantly a distinct human connection that traverses thousands of years. The Yangshao culture's concepts of death are yet another contribution to humanity's search for life's ultimate meaning.

I'm delighted to be joined by musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer - Rod Argent. In a career spanning more than 50 years, Rod is the keyboardist, founder and leader of the English rock band The Zombies. Their second album Odessey and Oracle is often mentioned by Paul Weller as his all time favourite. Rod has had an incredible career - continuing to perform live and release new music with The Zombies - he was also once part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and has recorded with The Who, Chris Rea, Roger Daltrey, Paul Carrack and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He's also been producer for the likes of Gilbert O'Sullivan, Tanita Tikaram and Nanci Griffith. In 2018, Paul Weller released his 14th solo album True Meanings, with Rod Argent contributing to two stand out tracks (on an album full of stand out tracks!) - he plays Hammond organ on The Soul Searchers and Mellotron & Piano on White Horses. You can find more info on Rod's music in my show notes at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/episode-92-rod-argent Thanks for listening - make sure that you subscribe / follow and leave a review - and if you want to support the podcast financially, you can buy me a virtual coffee (£3) or our new official merchandise at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/store

1993 is where the time machine takes us tonight as we listen to some early studio and live recordings of the Tom Gary Blues Band. These are so old that I don't remember recording most of them:-) The studio recordings that come first feature Tom Gary on piano and vocal, with Billy Birch on sax, Probably Harry Michaels on guitar, and Steve Green on drums. The two live songs were from a show at Connie's Lounge with the Tom Gary Blues Band, Jonny and the Soul Searchers, and Scotty and the Wingtips. Unfortunately only two songs so far exist. (I am pretty sure I have at least all of my band recorded somewhere) Those two songs feature Dave Nesvette on guitar, Billy Birch on sax, Jay Weaver on bass, and Jimmy Smith on the drums. That is a great show, and yes we have letters! Please like subscribe, share, and comment. If you are on Podbean please follow. THANKS

Visit us at www.paranormalunderground.net to read Paranormal Underground magazine! In this episode of Paranormal Underground Radio: In The Dark, we host a psychic roundtable to talk about all things paranormal and spiritual. Our panelists include psychic/mediums Seth Michael, Nancy Laporta, June Lundgren, and Teresa Kleve. Seth Michael is a natural born psychic/medium. For over 20 years, he has been dedicated to giving psychic readings and assisting others to reach their full potential in life. Seth often receives messages from loved ones who have passed on. One of his specialties is Rescue Mediumship. This is all about helping spirits cross into the “light” by validating their current emotional state of consciousnesses. He believes that spirits are emotional beings and by walking them through the process of letting go of what is holding the spirit onto the earth plane, he is able to help if they chose to cross. In addition to his work doing personal readings, he is part of a paranormal team, White Light Paranormal Insight, based in Camas, Washington. Seth’s radio show, Into the Light, was inspired by his interest to educate, particularly on how to identify and enhance your own abilities by connecting with the other side safely and respectfully. Nancy Laporta is a spiritualist who has been gifted with insight, from an early age, into what is known as the “other side” or the spiritual realm. She is able to offer guidance with information she receives from loved ones, angelic presence, and spirit guides to help give you better awareness of your world and the influences around you. She believes you can access the inner peace you seek by acknowledging and using the insights you are given. Nancy’s abilities include: Psychic Medium, Reiki Master Teacher, Akashic Record Reader, Medium for Paranormal Groups, Mentor for Soul Searchers. June Lundgren is a psychic medium, nurse, healer, and author. She comes from a long line of women with psychic and spiritual gifts. June helps people connect with those who wish to make a connection with their loved ones who have died. She does whole house and land cleansing, clearing, and blessings. June also helps to remove earthbound spirits, shadow people, and in some cases demonic entities. She helps resolve issues from past lives causing problems in this life, and, as a spiritual healer, she is a conduit for God's light.Teresa Kleve is a medium who became aware of her abilities at four years old. This is when she was first taught by her guides about her abilities. She is an empath and does energetic healing work as well. She often counsels and teaches people how to tune into their abilities She is 54, a quadriplegic with Muscular Dystrophy, and has been in a wheelchair for 30 years. Teresa offers mediumship readings via Skype, phone, and email.
