Today's SceneStop brings us to a mall in Orange County, Ca called South Coast Plaza. It is here that my friendship with Brian Chu was forged. I used to visit MC, the guitar player of ICE, on his lunch break when he worked at May Company. Numerous times I ran into people from the Sloth Crew and OC Hardcore Scene in this malls hallowed halls. Also, I bought (for the second time) a copy Sierra Championship Boxing, a game I still play!, at this mall. This video was done with my dear friend Rick Wilson aka Uncle Slam aka Brains. His home hosted the OKTOBERFEST in which ICE played with TRIGGERMAN. Together we took a walk down memory lane where I recalled Brains and I spending a lot of time at this mall, and he maintained that those times didn't happen. Enjoy! The essential requirements of a first-class triggerman are two: that he know how to pull the trigger–and when not to! Triggerman By J. F. Bands always need a place to practice and in the 1990s, Bandwest Studios, directly across from Angel Stadium, was an awesome practice venue. The rooms were big, clean, and many a night a band like Triggerman would be practicing and they'd run into their friends in Farside, Outspoken, or whoever else might be there. You could rent a PA system, mics, mic stands, and whatever else you needed to be able to harness your band's skills. * *Sadly, I wasn't exactly able to find Bandwest (as you will see in the video), but I got as close as I was able to. Oh boy, got a great one this week for you with the So Cal hardcore legend (my words, not his) Joe Nelson. He's the original vocalist of Ignite, road dog for bands like Quicksand, Insted and more. He also played in bands like The Killing Flame and is gearing up to release a new LP from another one of his musical projects, Triggerman. He is also responsible for launching Trust Records, which is a great re-issue label that is making sure some seminal records don't go out of print and are widely available for all. We discuss his time on the road with bands, the legacy of OC hardcore and why he chose to start this label. Dive in and enjoy! Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Hello, this is Kevin Murphy and welcome to Songs from the Farside, Episode number 12. My guest this time around is Brian Howell. Brian is a father, husband, educator and mentor and all around good dude. In the 1990’s Brian played bass for the very underrated California band Triggerman and toured with legendary hardcore band No For An Answer. These days, when not tending to one of the afore-mentioned descriptions he can be found restoring old cars and playing bass for the Americana inspired band The Pollen Collective who, in 2019, played over 60 shows. I’ve known Brian for years and it was great to talk to him about music and what it means to him. We talked about soft rock in the 1970's, about music as a healing tool and the importance of really listening to music and not just hearing it. We also talked about how music opened doors for us and exposed us to new worlds that we might not otherwise have ever known about. We did not talk about rare Venom singles or GG Allin records, but that’s probably for the best. As always - MOM, do not look up GG Allin. #triggerman #noforananswer #OCHC #thepollencollective
Strange Country tackles another trial of the century. This time it's the trial of Pamela Smart, a woman accused of bewitching a teen and his friends into murdering her husband. Co-hosts Beth and Kelly take about the impact of the media's glare. Smart's trial was the first to be broadcast live as it was happening and many of the participants acted more than a little starstruck. Also Beth does a spectacularly poor job of trying to explain a principle of quantum physics. The Whistler was an American radio drama that aired from 1942 to 1955. Each episode of The Whistler began with the sound of footsteps and a person whistling A character known only as the Whistler was the host and narrator of the tales, which focused on crime and fate. He often commented directly upon the action in the manner of a Greek chorus taunting the characters, guilty or innocent, from an omniscient perspective. The stories followed a formula in which a person's criminal acts were typically undone either by an overlooked but important detail or by the criminal's own stupidity. An ironic ending, often grim, was a key feature of each episode. In the first of a two-episode series devoted to current crime comics, Andy and Derek discuss six titles that take the genre into curious directions. They range from the historical (Rick Geary's Black Dahlia), to the formula-bending (Chris Hunt's Carver: A Paris Story and Janet Harvey and Megan Levens's Angel City), to the genre-blending (Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's Moonshine), to the comedic (Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber's The Fix), to the truly hardboiled (Walter Hill, Matz, and Jef's Triggerman as well as Christa Faust, Gary Philips, and Andrea Cameron's Peepland). There is a lot of crime/detective/noir/procedural goodness packed into this show, and the same is in store for the next week's episode, the second in the series. The incidental music in this episode is from classic crime TV shows, and you can find these theme songs in Television's Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, Television's Greatest Hits, Vol. 3, Television's Greatest Hits Vol. 4, and Television's Greatest Hits, Vol. 6. Crossfaded Bacon and Mad Decent Records presentMad Decent Worldwide Radio #30: BOUNCE ITMixed by EmyndI started listening to Bounce music about two years ago and, over the past couple years, have acquired a pretty extensive collection of CDs, MP3s, and records of this really rich music. For those unfamiliar with Bounce, it is a fairly unique strain of club-oriented hip-hop that originated in New Orleans sometime around 1991 with MC TT Tucker's "Where Dey At." Almost 20 years later, Bounce still dominates the urban club and block party scene in New Orleans with very little major label backing. Just as Baltimore Club is based on the Lyn Collins' "Think" break and the Gaz "Sing Sing" break, Bounce beats are based on samples from The Showboy's "Drag Rap" (aka "Triggerman") and Derek B's "Rock The Beat" drum break (more commonly known as "the Brown Beat"). The best club music seems almost always to thrive on calculated simplicity, and Bounce is no exception, relying on MC work that is based on simple call and response chants, straightforward rhyme schemes/patterns, and repetitive dance refrains. My buddy Noz-- http://www.cocaineblunts.com -- has helped me learn a lot about this music and several years ago (right after Katrina), he put together a really great collection of earlier Bounce songs that you can download (http://www.cocaineblunts.com/blunts/?p=690). Also, the first podcast on New Orleans rap has got some good stuff on it as well.In contrast to Noz's collection of songs, I made my mix as an effort to put people onto some more recent New Orleans Bounce songs and artists that they likely aren't very familiar with. As you'll notice pretty quickly, I've kept the mixing and DJing to a real minimum and tried to move pretty quickly from song to song to fit in as much stuff is possible. There isn't a real rhyme or reason for most of the selections on here. They're mostly just a bunch of Bounce songs I really like, and I'm hoping some of y'all will enjoy this stuff enough to go and support some of these artists. I've provided links wherever possible to help make that search as easy as I could because a lot of these folks have a pretty strong presence on Myspace. Please hit these dudes up on their Myspace, support their events, and buy whatever you can from them. Tracklisting:1. Intro2. DJ Jubilee "Get Ready, Ready!" (1997) 3.
