Episode 10 Is It Healthy to Selfie?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2020 65:40

Join us today for Episode 10 so we can talk with you about being healthy in your selfie!! We had real talk and information from psychology today about the "Selfitis" syndrome. I know that sounds funny, but, it is so true!! We get so caught up in "Self"that we forget the moments that really dont need to be captured. www.setfreelife.netHere are today’s notes:3John 1:2 Dear friend, and I pray all goes well for you. I hope you are as strong in body, as I know you are in spirit. Today’s Topic is: Is it healthy….. to Selfie? In today’s culture everyone is taking selfies. Back in the 80’s when we were kids, we took pictures of our friends when we were at football games, parties etc. The difference was, we only hoped that the pictures would come out good and our eyes weren’t closed. No filters, just plain good ol fun. Nowadays we are obsessed with taking pictures of ourselves. Taking pictures of our coffee and bible and attaching a scripture to that. Now there is nothing wrong with taking pictures, or drinking coffee and taking a picture of your coffee and bible. We want to talk about the motives behind the pictures and why do we have to show the world what we’re doing and what we’re doing for God. In an article in Psychology Today, there is now a word for all those selfie takers. Its called: “Selfitis" The worship of oneself. So Why do we take selfies?• To gain enormous attention by sharing selfies on social media.• Taking different selfies helps increase my social status.• Taking selfies instantly modifies my mood.• To use as trophies for future memories. According to Phycology Today here are Several Reasons that people take selfies:• Attention seeking: Taking and posting selfies to feel more popular. Social media is an obvious way to gain attention from a large audience and attention seeking may be one of the main reasons why people take selfies and use social media.• Mood modification: This has been described by Griffiths (2005) as an experience that makes someone feel better and is part of what defines addiction. Selfie-taking is another way in which people can enhance their mood, which reinforces selfie-taking behavior.• Self-confidence: The taking of selfies may increase the self-confidence of those who engage in this behavior. Furthermore, it is possible to edit and enhance selfies before posting them on social media, meaning that people may be able to use editing to obtain a photo closer to their "ideal self." • Social competition: Taking selfies to increase one’s social status, or posting selfies to get social media likes.• Subjective conformity: This refers to an individual’s tendency to copy what others do. Social media platforms allow users to create different groups and feel a sense of belongingness to a particular group. There is a possibility that selfie takers adopt certain "online" selfie rules to achieve a degree of social acceptance. • Environmental enhancement: This is the taking of selfies to create memories or trophies of oneself (e.g. at a concert or after running a marathon). Environmental enhancement also means that people are able to express themselves more freely through the taking of selfies. Could taking many selfie pictures be a form of worship or pride? Its perfectly ok to take pictures and share with others how happy you are with a person, place or thing. But if we put that before our love for ourselves MORE than the love for the Lord, it now becomes an Idol. There is a fine line between Self-love and the worship of oneself. If we’re not careful we can convince ourselves and others that self-care is healthy when its really pride.God tells us that the 2 greatest commandments are found in: Matthew 22:37-38 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] We have to examine our hearts (Psalm 26:2 Cross-examine me, O Lord, and see that this is so; test my motives and affections too)and ask ourselves; why do I want people to see this picture? Why did I take the picture and why do I feel the need to keep taking selfies so people can see? What does the bible say about Idols and can taking selfies be a form of self-worship? Exodus 20 The Message (MSG)20 I am God, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of a life of slavery.3 No other gods, ONLY ME.4-6 No carved gods of any size, shape, or form of anything whatever, whether of things that fly or walk or swim. Don’t bow down to them and don’t serve them because I am God, your God, and I’m a most jealous God, punishing the children for any sins their parents pass on to them to the third, and yes, even to the fourth generation of those who hate me. But I’m unswervingly loyal to the thousands who love me and keep my commandments. Todays SoulFit takeaways:1. Stop looking for secret approval:If a picture is worth a thousand words, then be careful what you post because it is a reflection of who you are, what you’re going through or what your feeling at the time.2. You don’t have to prove who you are:Peoples opinions of who they think you are or who you’re not, is not up to Social Media. We all need reassurance in this journey, but we don’t have to rise or fall because of people’s opinions.3. Keep Self-Love balanced:God tells us to love HIM first and foremost but also love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Love and Idolize are two different things. We are not to idolize our jobs, our bodies, our marriages, friends or ministries. But we can take a healthy approach to spread the message of the Gospel in a positive way.

You eat the sugar = you like it, you crave it, it has addictive properties2. Blood sugar levels spikes = dopamine is released int eh brain = addiction mass insulin secreted to drop blood sugar levels3. Blood sugar levels falls rapidly = High insulin levels cause immediate fat storage; body craves the lost sugar "high"4. Hungar & Cravings = low blood sugar caused increase appetite and cravings...the cycle is repeated over and over againResearchers at Princeton studying the neurochemical effects of sugar, have shown that sugar acts as a gateway drug for other drugs in many individuals. In one study, the research group fed chow to the rats as well as a 25% sugar solution similar to the sugar concentration of soft drinks. After one month the rats became “dependent” on the sugar solution, ate less chow and increased their intake of the sugary drink to 200%. Similar but stronger effects have been reported for rats given aspartame. The chemical reaction of sugar and aspartame stimulates the brain by activating beta endorphin receptor sites, the same chemicals activated in the brain by the ingestion of heroin and morphine.
