Hi all! Welcome to The Femiio Podcast, a space designed to encourage us on our journeys towards self-love. After growing up without seeing enough women who looked like me and discovering what that did to my self-esteem, I decided to create a brand that is

It is (one of) my dream(s) to be invited onto the Drama Queens OTH Podcast to join Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Bethany Joy Lenz and they rewatch and discuss episodes of one of my foundational television series: One Tree Hill. To that end, I figured why not do an episode where I pretend to be on the podcast ALREADY and rewatch an episode and discuss it myself? It's called “manifesting”

Today my friends we are going to be talking about “preferences” in dating, inspired by a quote from Solomon Missouri where he noted: “Too many of us use the language of ‘preference' to cover a highly curated set of white supremacist ideologies.” Having been guilty of doing that exact thing myself in the past, and spending years undoing that hideousness, figured I should talk about it.
Shani Silver is an author and podcaster originally from Fort Worth, Texas. Her name is pronounced like “rainy” with a “sh.” Her book, A Single Revolution: Don't look for a match—light one, helps singles reframe singlehood to see its value and validity, for as long as we happen to be single. She is not an advocate for singlehood, she's an advocate for people being happy while single, and there is a difference. Her podcast, A Single Serving Podcast, launched in April of 2019 in the hopes of giving single women content that—for once—didn't revolve around dating, and to support singles around the world in shedding the societal shame of singlehood. Shani has lived and dated in Austin, TX, Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, Philadelphia, PA, and Brooklyn, NY. She currently lives in New Orleans. Following ten years of use, Shani permanently deleted her dating apps in January of 2019. She has loved her life ever since. Ooooo this week friends we are talking about p l e a s u r e. Now for some of us “pleasure” is one of those words that fits right up there with "moist" and "quiver" — cringe city. And we're no more comfortable with the concept; women, especially Black women, have been taught to deny, repress, abhor, forget, and be ashamed about our own pleasure and exploring our pleasure. But the truth is that experiencing pleasure is fundamental to being alive, and in order to embrace our full selves, we need to embrace, get comfortable with, and allow ourselves to be led by our pleasure. So let's talk about what pleasure is, how we all got so weird about it, and how we can learn to get friendly with it and become our fullest most alive selves! References: Tweet Fearing the Black Body

Hope you love mess as much as we do!
Okay so full disclosure, this episode was going to be named “R*ssian Dolls” but after witnessing the atrocities P*tin is committing against Ukraine I figured we'd take it in another direction. Season 3 finale!! We made it y'all! This week I wanted to talk about my new favorite show, American Crime Story: Impeachment about the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the ensuing impeachment of Bill Clinton. There were too many overlays between Monica's portrayed experience and one of my earlier podcast episodes discussing the trouble with choosing emotionally (and otherwise) unavailable people for me to NOT talk about it so here we are. So last week was a lot. Minutes before a jury told us what we'd already seen with our eyes, that Derek Chauvin was guilty of murdering George Floyd in cold blood, Ma'Khia Bryant was murdered in cold blood after calling the police for help. I have never been more tired and I imagine Black people everywhere are feeling the same weight. Please rest. White people, y'all have work to do. Black people, take care of yourselves

You knew we had to talk about that interview. THAT interview. The one where Harry and Meghan slammed the “Expose” button on The Royal Family. Yes this is a huge cultural moment and so deserves attention for that but even more so, this interview felt important to discuss because on some level, Meghan's experience in The Royal Family echoes and mirrors the experiences Black women have everyday. Being gaslit, being watched under a microscope, being unduly criticized, being accused of making a white woman cry, being told that you and/or your children do not deserve the same rights and protections because of your skin. There is a whole host of privilege involved here (both due to wealth and colorism), but there are also points of connection, a subtle sameness. So I wanted to discuss those, as well as highlight the similarities between hers and the late Princess Diana's stories. It's a lot so let's get into it! Y'all THIS WEEK. We are going IN on this season of the Bachelor and it's about damnb time. Yes, that “b” is there on purpose. Welcome to season 3 of The Femiio Podcast everyone! For today's show I had the opportunity to interview the incredible Nikki Lynette, a creative multi-hyphenate in the fullest sense of the word, who birthed the hit play Get Out Alive based on her personal mental health journey. Over the course of this powerful conversation, Nikki and I got to discuss the importance of representation in mental wellness, what it means to live on purpose, and why you are the only one responsible for making yourself happy. We made it! The season 2 finale of The Femiio Podcast is here! This week we're wrapping up our Trip Down Memory Lane with a journal entry I wrote recently, reflecting on the process of moving from self-hatred towards self-love. I want to thank every single one of you who have listened, commented, shared, rated, and loved this podcast! It gives me life and I cannot wait to get back here next season. Mmmmkay so THIS WEEK. Y'all are getting a *special treat* because I apparently lost my mind and decided that I would read to you my old JOURNAL ENTRIES! Can you imagine. Kidding of course about the lost my mind part — it is thrillingly vulnerable to read journal entries on a public podcast but isn't that what we're all about? Vulnerability! This is the first of a two-part episode, which will showcase the transition from being in a place of deep self-hatred, through the awkward middle phase as I begin to practice self-acceptance (a very uncomfortable undertaking when you've been so used to self-rejection) and finally, in two weeks, we'll discuss my current practice of self-love and what I've learned and hope for along the way. It promises to be quite the ride, enjoy! And please don't forget to rate and subscribe to this podcast, it helps more people it might benefit to find it! Heyooo! I wasn't going to do any Election 2020 content, but as the votes rolled in last week and we waited what seemed like an eternity to find out who would become the 46th President of the United States, I thought it important to not only let off some steam, but have a record of the thoughts and emotions a lot of us may have been feeling, and may still be feeling. I invited my friend Asha back for an open, honest, and raw conversation about the election chaos, Donald Trump's surging numbers, and the incredible ways Black folk continue to show up and show out in a country that routinely rejects us. I hope at the least, you feel heard as you listen. If you want to stay in touch, find me on Instagram @femiio or email questions/feedback to info@femiio.com. Happy first birthday to The Femiio Podcast!
Some time ago I posted this sentence to Instagram and got a... RESPONSE. For many of us (straight, cisgendered women looking for relationship) hearing this phrase comes with a litany of excuses and evidence trying to disprove it. But how instead, can we see this statement as a truth and reflection of abundance in our love lives? How do we practice believing this even in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary? So many of us are OBSESSED with the idea of being a “good person”. We find ourselves ruminating, constantly agonizing over decisions, or regretting words we've used or things we've done with the past, keeping a constant tally and hoping that at the end the result will tell us that we are “Good people”. What if I told you that was all horseshit? What if I told you life isn't about dividing people up into “good” or “bad” camps, rather it is about looking at yourself with love and having a deep knowing that you are doing your best? Listen to this episode to hear why we struggle so hard with wanting to be “good”, and how to release that and relax into grace for yourself and the people around you. Recently I had the distinct privilege of (virtually) sitting down with Miss Deun Ivory! For those of you who don't know, Deun Ivory is a photographer, creative visionary, and founder of The Body a Home for Love — a nonprofit organization centered on shifting the culture and conversation around how black women heal from sexual trauma. POWERFUL AMIRITE. In this episode we got to discuss all things art, aesthetic, inspiration, and black girl magic. It's jam packed with gems so I highly suggest listening at least twice and taking some notes. Enjoy friends! Who is The Chill Girl? What does that mean? In essence, The Chill Girl is a persona we slip into when we decide to make ourselves small. When we give into the teaching that we as women are to be seen, not heard — God forbid we express dissent or vocalize a need because then we run the risk of being called “high-maintenance”, “difficult to work with”, or be otherwise shamed. The Chill Girl is who we sometimes become in our efforts to belong (which is not a bad thing!). However, we must realize, the only way to truly belong is to abandon the “The Chill Girl” persona, and instead accept, embrace, and show up with all parts of ourselves. Disney+ just started showing Hamilton on their platform a few weeks ago and you know we had to get into it. How much responsibility to artist's have when telling a story? The title of this episode, as you may have guessed, was inspired by that absolute BOP by Selena Gomez of the same name, about what it looks like when you get to the other side of heartbreak. As so many of us are now facing varying kinds/levels of heartbreak, be it personal, societal, or global, I thought it was important to discuss what it looks like to move through heartbreak, and how we can get to the other side even when the middle feels so vast and at times insurmountable. If you find yourself struggling right now, please don't hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend or better yet a THERAPIST. They'll save your life, I can personally attest. When we think of Beyoncé, we often tend to believe that how she is is always how she's been — powerful, strong, self-assured. And to some extent that's true, but what's truer is that even she is in a process of becoming, as we all are. And it's evident in her work, that she has continued to grow and change and become more herself over her career. So what can we learn from that process? How can we also lovingly submit to our process of becoming so that we can grow into our highest selves? What does it mean to make a home out of our bodies? How do we practice making our bodies feel safe when so many of us have been taught and practiced years of the opposite — talking badly about your body, wishing you had someone else's stomach, or chest, or legs, overlooking the body's needs. In this episode we cover the practice of making homes out of our bodies, making them spaces we feel safe and comfortable in, and love well in and from.
