Gospel Daily with Josh Weidmann Tola and Jair: Complacency or Commitment? Part 2 Series: Judges Scripture: Judges 10 Episode: 1252 In Judges 10, the story shifts to two lesser-known leaders, Tola and Jair, who serve as judges of Israel and bring brief periods of peace. After their rule, Israel once again falls into idolatry, serving multiple false gods and abandoning the Lord. As a result, God allows them to be oppressed by the Ammonites and Philistines, causing great distress. When the Israelites cry out, God rebukes them for their repeated unfaithfulness. However, after they repent and remove their foreign gods, God's compassion is stirred. Key themes include leadership transitions, Israel's cycle of idolatry, repentance, and God's mercy.

Businesses across Clare are reporting mixed economic fortunes this Christmas. While some retailers and hospitality providers in this county are seeing signs of a festive footfall boom, others have noticed a significant drop in their bottom line. Despite the pouring rain, Clare's last minute shopping brigade were out in force, hoping for a Christmas miracle. The late rush is always a welcome surge for business owners, which is particularly being felt in North Clare after a challenging year. One Entrepreneur in Ennistymon believes unfavourable weather conditions during the peak tourist season coupled with rising input costs and inflation has put the strain on trade. Michelle Gunning from Mo Leanna Chroí Ceramics says the support of the community has been paramount in pulling through. Parking has also been flagged as an issue in the town, however the owner of a prominent local café believes a culture shift is needed. Sinéad Garvey from St.Tola's Cheese Press says their enjoying a busy month following a slow start to the Winter and insists parking is readily available in Ennistymon if people change their habits. In Ennis, the public realm works on O'Connell Street have been put on pause since November 29th to facilitate the Christmas shopping period. One Business owner claims he's already seeing a marked increase in footfall as a result. Conor Harkin from Truth Menswear on Upper Parnell Street says while the works proved a major disruption, the trade-off has been worthwhile. A Jewellers in the county town has also experienced a serious resurgence within the last month. Founder of Blackbird on Bank Place, Katie Rogers says the bounce back came as a major but welcome suprise. It's the most wonderful time of the year for shopping in Ireland, with AIB data indicating men spent between five and six million-euro during yesterday lunchtime alone. Owner of Fancy That in Ennistymon Carol McGann says its been a balanced year overall with no major growth, but has a cautionary tale for last minute shoppers to remember.

The Greens are pledging to transform the delivery of homes and wastewater infrastructure in Clare. Minister for State at the Department of Agriculture Senator Pippa Hackett and Deputy Leader Senator Roisín Garvey have launched the party's rural manifesto this lunchtime at St.Tola's Goat Farm in Inagh. The policy promises to introduce affordable housing projects across all towns and villages, the development of 200 bike, car sharing and EV charging hubs and to entice more young people into farming through tax incentives and environmental grants. Speaking at the launch, Minister Hackett has been defending her record on ACRES and telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan issues with succession planning in the sector are due to failures of their coalition colleagues.

Five other former NYC champions are in the mix (three men and two women), plus a pair of stacked U.S. fields vying to produce top-10 overall finishes… or even higher. The race kicks off on Sunday, November 3rd with the women's race starting at 8:35am E.T. and the men following at 9:05am E.T. (Don't forget to set your clock back an hour the night before!) Businesses and employees across Clare are being urged to be proactive in protecting against cyber security attacks. It follows a recent cyber attack on a west Clare business, which caused over € 1,000 worth of damages. Just last week, St. Tola's Goats Cheese in Ennistymon had its system subject to a cyber attack when attempting to send online invoices. As a result, the company had to install a € 1,500 defence system as a preventative measure against future attacks. However, now that the company has been subject to an initial attack, owner Siobhán Ni Ghairbhith, is fearful this opens up the possibility of further breaches from the same attacker. Shannon Chamber has hosted a seminar with presentations from cyber security firms to inform businesses on best practice to prevent such attacks. Among the key points raised was that cybercrime is now a competing business with industry and it's hoped that future seminars can be hosted to further highlight concerns. CEO Shannon Chamber, Helen Downes believes that greater education in the realm of cyber security is needed to reaffirm that prevention is better than cure. The Chief Commercial Officer of a security firm insists, meanwhile, that greater responsibility needs to be taken by all employees within a business. CCO of Viatel Technology Group, Damien McCann says cyber security is no longer the remit of just the IT department, but everyone within a business.
Clare businesses will be marching on Leinster House this afternoon to express their frustration with Budget 2025. The protest has been organised by the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Vintners Federation of Ireland and the Irish Small and Medium Enterprise Council, with all calling for urgent measures to offset "spiralling costs". Retail and hospitality firms will benefit from a €4,000 energy subsidy announced in the budget, but will have to contend with the 13.5% vat rate and a further 50c hike to the national minimum wage. Owner of St.Tola's Goat Cheese in Ennistymon and ISME Council member Siobhán Ní Ghairbhith says the Government has no understanding of the current crisis.

Big Idea: Why family reunions are always weird. In the Beginning: Joseph Genesis 45:16-46:34 I. Every family has issues. 45:16-28 When the news reached Pharaoh's palace, “Joseph's brothers have come,” Pharaoh and his servants were pleased. Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals and go on back to the land of Canaan. Get your father and your families, and come back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you can eat from the richness of the land.' You are also commanded to tell them, ‘Do this: Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your dependents and your wives and bring your father here. Do not be concerned about your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.' ” The sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had commanded, and he gave them provisions for the journey. He gave each of the brothers changes of clothes, but he gave Benjamin three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothes. He sent his father the following: ten donkeys carrying the best products of Egypt and ten female donkeys carrying grain, food, and provisions for his father on the journey. So Joseph sent his brothers on their way, and as they were leaving, he said to them, “Don't argue on the way.” So they went up from Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. They said, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt!” Jacob was stunned, for he did not believe them. But when they told Jacob all that Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to transport him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. Then Israel said, “Enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go to see him before I die.” II. There's no distance too far for family. 46:1-7 Israel set out with all that he had and came to Beer-sheba, and he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. That night God spoke to Israel in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob!” he said. And Jacob replied, “Here I am.” God said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you back. Joseph will close your eyes when you die.” Jacob left Beer-sheba. The sons of Israel took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him, along with their dependents and their wives. They also took their cattle and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan. Then Jacob and all his offspring with him came to Egypt. His sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters, indeed all his offspring, he brought with him to Egypt. III. You can't pick your family name. 8-27 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt—Jacob and his sons: Jacob's firstborn: Reuben. Reuben's sons: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. Simeon's sons: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. Levi's sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Judah's sons: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. Issachar's sons: Tola, Puvah, Jashub, and Shimron. Zebulun's sons: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. These were Leah's sons born to Jacob in Paddan-aram, as well as his daughter Dinah. The total number of persons: thirty-three. Gad's sons: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. Asher's sons: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah. Beriah's sons were Heber and Malchiel. These were the sons of Zilpah—whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah—that she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons. The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. They were born to him by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, a priest at On. Benjamin's sons: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. These were Rachel's sons who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons. Dan's son: Hushim. Naphtali's sons: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel. She bore to Jacob: seven persons. The total number of persons belonging to Jacob—his direct descendants, not including the wives of Jacob's sons—who came to Egypt: sixty-six. And Joseph's sons who were born to him in Egypt: two persons. All those of Jacob's household who came to Egypt: seventy persons. IV. Only one family that lasts forever. 28-34 Now Jacob had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to prepare for his arrival at Goshen. When they came to the land of Goshen, Joseph hitched the horses to his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, threw his arms around him, and wept for a long time. Then Israel said to Joseph, “I'm ready to die now because I have seen your face and you are still alive!” Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's family, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh, telling him, ‘My brothers and my father's family, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. The men are shepherds; they also raise livestock. They have brought their flocks and herds and all that they have.' When Pharaoh addresses you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?' you are to say, ‘Your servants, both we and our ancestors, have raised livestock from our youth until now.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to Egyptians.” Next Steps: Believe: I need to be adopted into God's family today. Become: I will become part of a group this week. Be Sent: I will invite someone into my life this week. Group Discussion Questions: When was your last family reunion? What did the shirts look like? Is your family reunion worth traveling to? Explain your answer. How do you handle family conflicts during family reunions? How do you stay positive when dealing with difficult family members How can you pass on family values at a reunion? Explain. Is it easy to involve multiple generations at a reunion?? Pray for Jesus to show you someone who he wants in his family this week.

A Clare business owner is urging the Government to exclude the salary of public sector workers when calculating the national minimun wage. It comes as the newly formed SME Alliance, which involves a range of Irish Small and Medium Enterprises and trade union representatives, is appealing for immediate and essential reforms to taxation and output costs. The alliance claims that 48% of the workforce are employed by the public service or multinationals, which it believes does not reflect the reality for small firms. ISME Council Member and Director of St.Tola's Goats Cheese in Ennistymon, Siobhán Ní Ghairbhith says the Government should focus on reducing the cost of living, rather than increasing costs for local businesses.
Fears have been expressed for small and medium businesses in Clare due to Ireland's "overreliance" on corporation tax. It follows the launch of the Irish Small and Medium and Enterprise Council's pre-budget submission, which is calling on the Government to focus on supports for indigenous firms. According to the CSO, 70% of Clare's private workforce is currently employed by a small or medium Irish company. ISME Council Member and Director of St.Tola's Goats Cheese in Ennistymon Siobhán Ní Ghairbhith insists the state must recognise the permanent contribution of indigenous enterprise to the economy.

"I was going in with the mentality that I could medal even before we left. I just knew my fitness was at a different level. Yes, eighth is great and I'm happy about that, but I don't think my fitness really showed in this marathon. I think I have another level that I'm trying to bridge the gap to. But seeing them do so well, I was definitely thinking of it in the race. Kenneth was second, Grant was third, like I can go out here and medal… I know these guys, I run with these guys, I get my doors blown off by these guys, but I can go medal." My guest for today's episode is Conner Mantz, who recently finished an impressive eighth place at the Paris Olympics Marathon with a time of 2:08:12.On a course that was as unforgiving as it was historic, Conner mixed it up with the best marathoners in the world, tackling the relentless hills and intense heat of Paris. At mile 9, when Tamirat Tola, the eventual Olympic champion, made his first big move up one of the course's steepest hill, Conner was right there and decided to go with him. It was a bold decision and the kind we've come to expect from Conner, who's never been afraid to take risks in a race. Even though Tola's second move eventually separated the field, Conner's courage to hang with the lead pack for so long is a testament to his racing mindset. Conner proved that he's not just one of the top U.S. marathoners, but a true competitor on the world stage. The energy of the Parisian crowds, reflections on the work put in this training block, and the high-five he shared with Clayton right before the toughest part of the course are some of the highlights that he recounts in this episode. Plus, if you listened to our last episode, Clayton Young was bold enough to talk about going after the American record. Conner has similar thoughts! Time Stamps: 4:49 - How Conner evaluated his success in the Olympic marathon. 5:37 - How he trained to prepare for the hilly marathon course. 9:57 - What cross training looked like while injured during his build. 15:42 - On having one of his most consistent builds yet post-injury. 19:28 - How he sized up his competition heading into the race. 29:49 - Watching Kenneth Rooks take silver in the steeplechase. 22:57 - Pre-race traditions. 27:58 - Breaking down his Olympic marathon experience. 31:45 - Mid-race high-five with Clayton Young. 35:23 - Details on the epic marathon course hill. 38:12 - The downhill portion following the epic hill. 44:45 - Reuniting with Clayton after the race + welcoming other finishers in. 47:46 - The support from his friends, family, and team. 52:17 - Setting his sights on the American record.
Tamirat Tola won the men's Olympic Marathon gold today, but it was the marathon course that we thought was the star of the show, as it threw two severe hills at the athletes, creating a dynamic, unpredictable race full of excitement. We explain how Tola conquered that course in remarkable fashion to break the Olympic Record with aggressive hill running. We also look back on the track action, which included relay medals for some athletes who came so close to individual podiums, as well as a double gold and bronze in the women's 10000m, and an impressively fast women's 400m. Finally, we talk breaking, boxing and the IOC's disgrace, and look ahead to the final night of track action from Paris.Join DiscourseIf you're enjoying of Paris Daily podcasts, and generally love sports science, consider a small donation to become a Patron of the site, and get access to our Discourse community, where you can join like-minded fans and sports enthusiasts to keep the conversation going. Daily Dose of Hope July 8, 2024 Day 2 of Week 15 Scripture: Judges 9-11; Psalm 17; Luke 23 Welcome back once again to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional that complements the bible reading plan for New Hope Church. I'm going to ask all of you to be in prayer for our Vacation Bible School, which starts today. We will be ministering to almost 200 children and their families. Please pray that those who don't know Jesus will come to know him, that those who just give a head nod to God will come to follow him more closely, and pray a special prayer of protection, strength, and wisdom for all our children, volunteers, and staff. With that, let's get right into our Scripture for today. As usual, let's begin with our Old Testament passages. At the end of Judges 8, we see that Gideon dies and the Israelites begin to engage in idolatry once again. The pattern is repeating itself. This time, in Judges 9, we read about Abimelek, who is one of Gideon's sons by a concubine from Shechem (Gideon had something like seventy sons by his many wives and concubines). In my research, several scholars actually consider Abimelek a judge of Israel but certainly not one chosen by God. He wanted to lead Israel and does so for three years, but he is cruel and violent. Eventually, rebellion is stirred up against Abimelek. In his own violent quest to squash the rebellion, he is killed. As we read this, it becomes evident how incredibly chaotic and ugly this time of the judges happened to be. Moving into Judges 10, we meet Tola and Jair, two other judges that led Israel. Then, it becomes clear that Israel is once again falling into depravity and idolatry. God allows them to fall into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites. We get the sense that a new judge is coming. Jephthah is next. He is a complicated judge however. He is the son of a prostitute and a man named Gilead. This is kind of confusing, as the father has the same name as the region in which they live. You may have caught that. Anyway, Gilead's sons by his legitimate wife drive Jephthah away from their home and he flees to a land named Tob, where he gains a name for himself as a warrior. I'm going to give a bit of a summary of what happened because I think it's not incredibly clear as we read. Basically, Israel is being oppressed pretty severely by the Ammonites and they decide to attack the region of Gilead once again. The people are hurting but they have no leader. Thus, they ask Jephthah, who they previously pushed away, to come lead them. Jephthah tries to negotiate with the Ammonites first but that isn't successful. God's Spirit comes over Jephthah and he is able to recruit fighters for the battle. Then, he makes a horribly misguided vow. He tells God that he will offer as a burnt offering whatever or whomever comes to meet him if he returns in victory. Jephthah then attacks and thoroughly defeats the Ammonites, so Israel is saved for the time being. But who comes out to meet Jephthah? His only child, his daughter whom he dearly loves. He is greatly distressed and tells his daughter what he vowed to God – to either give her up as a human sacrifice OR dedicate her whole life in service to God, two different interpretations by scholars of Jephthah's vow. The daughter requests two months of freedom to travel and spend time with friends and he grants her that. Her primary concern in not getting to marry and have kids, which makes many think that she did dedicate her life to service to God rather than become a burnt offering, which God truly would have detested. Only pagan gods required human sacrifice. Regardless, the whole story is slightly bizarre. Psalm 17 is a beautiful prayer written by David. He is once again pledging to stay faithful to God, and he asks that God protects him from his enemies. Most likely, this prayer was penned by David as he was fleeing from Saul who wanted to kill him. David clearly trusts God completely and knows that God will answer. There is a great expression here when David asks to be the “apple of your eye.” This is a reference literally to the pupil. This part of the body is the most protected, the most guarded against even a slight touch. David asks God to guard him in the same way. Okay, let's move on to the New Testament. Today, we focus on Luke 23, which includes Jesus' trial before Pilate, the crucifixion, his death, and his burial. Crucifixion was a horrific death. He was beaten and mocked by the soldiers, betrayed by his own people, and nailed to a cross to die. I won't go into the gory details of crucifixion, as you have probably heard them before, but it was a terribly painful and humiliating way to die. There was a man named Simon from Cyrene who was passing by and they forced him to carry the cross. Cyrene was on the tip of Africa so this man was far from home! And here he was, just going about his business, and he is enlisted, or more like seized, to carry the cross of the Savior of the world. I'm guessing that Jesus' physical body was incredibly weak and bloody by this point. And Simon walked by him, carrying the cross that would serve to execute Jesus but also save all humanity from their sin. We don't know what happened to Simon after the crucifixion. He isn't mentioned again in Scripture. But my guess is that his life was never the same again. An encounter with Jesus is always life-changing. Luke's version of this passage has a lot of substance. We read about the criminals executed on each side of Jesus, one of whom ends up believing and Jesus says, “Today, I will see you in paradise.” Pretty amazing. But Luke also includes the observation about the curtain in the temple. When Jesus is about to breathe his last, the curtain in the temple, which separated the Holy of Holies (where God's presence stayed) from the rest of the temple was torn in two. Only the high priest was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies one time a year to make atonement for the sins of the people. This tearing of the curtain was hugely symbolic and I don't want us to miss it. It meant that Jesus' death was the final atonement for sin and now the Holy of Holies was open to all people. God's presence is never confined again, never to be in a place made by human hands. Jesus Christ is God. His body is the temple. He is the final sacrifice and he has opened the door to all people, all believers, being able to go boldly into God's presence with no barriers. I should also mention that now that Jesus has ascended into heaven, the presence of the living God is still with us in the form of the Holy Spirit. And if we believe in Jesus and his sacrifice, then the Holy Spirit dwells in us. The presence of God is now within us! Think about that. It's really amazing and takes some time for us to wrap our brains around. God is closer than your very breath. Let's chat again tomorrow. Blessings, Pastor Vicki
