In May 2017 49-year-old builder Michael McGrath disappeared - almost without trace. No crime scene was ever found. No weapon was ever found. No body was ever found. So how could his longtime friend be arrested and charged with murder? In February 2023, the trial of David Charles Benbow finally began. Benbow stood accused of murdering McGrath because he'd started a relationship with Benbow's former partner, Joanna Green. The prosecution said that, while based entirely on circumstantial evidence, its case was so comprehensive there could be no doubt Benbow was guilty. The defence said detectives were biased, working hard to build a case against Benbow after he was identified as a prime suspect - by Green. Stuff, New Zealand's award-winning leader in true crime podcasts (Black Hands, The Commune, Gone Fishing) presents The Trial. Journalists from the Christchurch Press newsroom spent weeks at the High Court and pored over hundreds of hours of recordings to create a compelling and in-depth insight into New Zealand's criminal justice system. Hear the evidence. Follow the twists and turns. Wait - for the verdict. WARNING: This series contains some strong language and content that may upset some people. In this rainy day episode, Peggy discusses a "Delicious" memoir by Ruth Reichl, goes back to a simpler time with the L.M. Montgomery classic, Anne of Green Gables, and talks about The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben.Erik also headed back in publishing time, to the future with Ursula Le Guin's 1968 classic, A Wizard of Earthsea and the Coretta Scott King honor book, Black Hands, White Sails by Pat and Frederick McKissack which details the bravery of black sailors who were desperate to escape slavery and became whalers. They also discuss the connection between whaling and the abolitionist movement. Correction: In this podcast, Erik refers to Ged, the protagonist of A Wizard of Earthsea, as black. The character's skin color is described as "red-brown" in the book. The importance of diverse characters in fiction was championed by Le Guin. We offer this correction in support of the text and in continuing to challenge our assumptions."

It's the 20th of June 1994, and the residents of Andersons Bay, in Dunedin, are waking up to a crisp, dark morning. Ice frosts the roads and despite it being after 7 o'clock the sun is still yet to appear in the sky.  Three police officers stand alert on the doorstep of 65 Every Street, a ramshackle house home to the six members of the Bain Family. Eleven minutes earlier, a distressed call was made to emergency services from this location… The officers try to gain access to the house. They kick the door but it doesn't budge. Luckily there's a stack of firewood on the veranda, they grab a piece and use it to break the glass pane, reaching through to let themselves inside. As they enter they see a man on the floor in the foetal position. He's crying. And as they inch closer he starts yelling ‘They're all dead. My family is all dead.' What they find will haunt New Zealand and stump investigators to this day. And will become the most controversial case New Zealand has ever seen… CREDITS Guest: Journalist Martin Van Beynan Author of Black Hands: Inside the Bain Family Murders Host of the BLACK HANDS - A Family Mass Murder podcast Host & Executive Producer: Gia Moylan Audio Producers: Rhiannon Mooney & Gia Moylan CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. Screentime guru Tara Ward has some picks for your weekend:  Black Hands: The Bain family murders remains one of New Zealand's most controversial mysteries. New series Black Hands depicts the years leading up to the murders through the eyes of the victims and the accused (TVNZ1, Sunday night).  The Vow: a fascinating true crime documentary series that follows members who joined the self-improvement group NXIVM – whose leader, Keith Raniere, was convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, among other crimes – and reveals the emotional toll of unfolding events (Neon).   Anthony: In July 2005, black teenager Anthony Walker was murdered by two white men in an unprovoked racist attack in a Liverpool park. He was just 18 years old. This film, written by Jimmy McGovern, tells the story of how this talented young man's life might have turned out (Acorn TV). LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE
