My guest today is Shawn Eckert. Shawn is an ultra runner who lives in Florida. Shawn battled alcohol and drug addiction before completely turning his life around and finding health. When Shawn's son was born, he decided to lose weight. Although, he did not fully commit himself to his goal initially. It took Shawn a little time to start his journey, but he never looked back losing over 200 lbs from his 446 lb starting point and turning into an ultra-endurance athlete. My guests today are Shan Riggs and Callie Vinson. On December 1, 2020, Shan finished a three-month run across America. Callie was his crew chief for the entire journey that began on September 1, 2020. These two undertook this challenge to raise money for Foodshare, a food bank that supports the Greater Hartford area of Connecticut. Shan and Callie raised $45,000 for the charity in order to fight food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The cross-country run took 92 total days (84 running days). Shan covered 3,255 total miles averaging 38.75 miles per day. He went through 10 pairs of shoes and consumed over 4,000 calories per day. My guest today is Jake Anapol. Jake is fresh off of his commitment to play Division I Football for the Marist Red Foxes. Jake has overcome a ton of adversity to get to where he is today. He moved to the United States from Oxford, England in elementary school. Jake had to undergo multiple surgeries to fix a knee issue that he was born with throughout his childhood. When Jake got to high school, he had an additional two surgeries caused from football totaling seven knee procedures. Jake began his high school football career at Xavier HS in Middletown, CT before transferring to the Kent School. Jake excelled in football at both places. At Kent, he became an All-League and All-New England offensive lineman. He missed his sophomore year due to injury and his senior season due to COVID, but Jake was still able to pick up multiple D1 offers. He recently committed to Marist and will sign with the football program on December 16th. My guest today is Rich Duffy. Rich was born and raised in Philadelphia, but currently resides in Virginia with his wife and two children. Rich described his weight and health as a yo-yo throughout his adult life. When his 53rd birthday rolled around a couple years ago, he decided to give himself the gift of health. Rich made the commitment to stop drinking alcohol and do good things for his body. This resulted in Rich losing 60 pounds and becoming a two time marathoner in the past two years. He is now training for a triathlon. "My cancer might be inoperable but I’m not scared. I just want the word ‘inoperable’ used and not ‘incurable’."This is a quote from today's guest Matthew Pullan. Matthew Pullan, known as Running Through Cancer, is a young adult from the UK. In 2004, he had a brain tumor that was able to be successfully removed. Matthew had a normal childhood following the removal of his first brain tumor. He participated in all types of sports growing up. In 2020, he was feeling dizzy so he went back to his Cancer specialist. An MRI revealed that he had another brain tumor near the location of his first tumor that was removed. Surgery removed 99% of the second tumor, but doctors found that the cancer had spread to his brainstem making it inoperable and terminal. Despite this, Matthew continues to maintain an amazing outlook on life. He is still running and going to college while undergoing cancer treatments. In the month of November, he's running a mile a day for charity which is a clear sign of his positivity. My guest today is Matt Dekoeyer. Matt is a 2012 graduate of Xavier High School where he played the offensive/defensive line and won two Connecticut state championships. Following high school, Matt attended Providence College. He joined the rugby team in his sophomore year and fell in love with the sport. He ultimately became an assistant coach immediately following graduation and spent one season as the head coach of the team. Matt ultimately moved on from the head coaching role and ended up moving to Boston to be in the hotbed of tech startups. He has lived in Boston since 2018. After one year of living in Boston, he made a massive change in his life. Last fall, he joined UFC Gym Boston, started focusing on his diet, and has now lost 60 pounds. Matt is currently in the process of training for his first sanctioned Golden Gloves Boxing match which he hopes will take place in the spring pending the state of the pandemic. My guest today is Matt Wallace. Matt is a great dude as well as an extremely versatile runner. His first ever running race was a 100 mile DNF, but this fueled him to conquer the distance and keep pushing his body to new limits. He has completed four 100 milers including the Georgia Jewel this past weekend and is a Tahoe 200 mile finisher. Despite this, Matt doesn't just excel on the trail. He has qualified for the Boston Marathon twice and also is a multiple time full Ironman finisher. My guest today is ultra runner Hector Rodriguez. Hector Rodriguez is a husband, father, and challenge seeker that resides in San Diego, CA. Hector’s journey started after coming across David Goggin’s Can’t Hurt Me book. He was an endurance athlete before he read the book, but his life was completely transformed as he lost 50 pounds and began intentionally throwing major challenges in his path. Hector began running, walking, and hiking 10 miles a day and this paid dividends in his daily life as well as his ultra career. In 2020, Hector started to see his consistent training payoff in his challenges. He finished top 5 finish in the Pirate Cove 24-hour race, 3rd in the Aravaipa Strong 100 miler, and 2nd in the Aravaipa Lone Mountain race where he covered 146 miles. He is currently preparing to take on Moab 240 in a month which is a 240 mile race through Moab, UT that has 29,000 ft. of climbing...the same elevation that you would get from climbing Mt. Everest. My guest today is ultra runner Shan Riggs. Shan's running resume includes close to 50 ultra marathons including the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run which is the oldest 100 miler in the country. Shan is about to embark on a run across the United States for Foodshare which is Greater Hartford Connecticut's regional food bank. The people at Foodshare connected Shan and I because that was the non profit that I ran from Canada to Connecticut to support. In less than a week, Shan will be running from San Francisco, CA all the way back to Connecticut to raise money for Foodshare in these difficult times that the world is currently experiencing. He is trying to finish the run in three to four months and raise a lot of awareness for food insecurity along the journey. My guest today is Anthony Garcia. Anthony is a former collegiate offensive lineman turned ultra endurance athlete. If you know anything about football, offensive linemen are the biggest people on the field who typically hate running. I know this was the case for Anthony and I at least! Anthony's playing career ended in 2003, but it wasn't until two years ago that he found trail running and fell in love with sport. Since his football career ended, he has lost 140 pounds and completed numerous ultra running races including the Aravaipa Black Canyon 100K and most recently the Cool Moon 100 Miler. Will and I grew up playing in these tournaments together and now he has taken over as the tournament director and is doing an amazing job. From Massive Setback to Major Comeback with Mike Gulino

My guest today is Mike Gulino. Mike grew up in Meriden, Connecticut. At Maloney High School he was a three sport athlete, but ultimately chose to play baseball at the collegiate level. Mike earned a scholarship to Pace University where he received numerous accolades. He continued his career professionally in the independent ranks for the Cleburne Railroaders and Florence Freedom. When Mike was with the Freedom, he suffered a C5 burst fracture which is a broken neck and this sidelined him for over a year. Since his injury, Mike has returned to playing baseball and is working to become a better athlete than he was before the injury to earn an opportunity to get back into professional baseball. Mike is currently an assistant baseball coach at Albertus Magnus College and recently opened Top Level Baseball which is a training facility for athletes looking to improve their game. Pitching Through Adversity with Kyle Wollman

My guest today is Kyle Wollman. Kyle played baseball at Xavier High School and graduated in 2015. He went on to play baseball at Endicott College where he pitched for the Gulls the past five seasons. The journey wasn't smooth sailing though as Kyle suffered numerous arm injuries throughout his career. In the fall of his senior year at Xavier, he partially tore his UCL which would be the beginning of his arm issues. He would ultimately get Tommy John surgery at Endicott his freshman year which would force him to be sidelined for his first two seasons. This didn't stop Kyle from overcoming these obstacles and turning into a dominant starting pitcher for Endicott in his final seasons with the team. In the episode, we talk about Kyle's baseball beginnings in Berlin Little League, his career at Xavier, college baseball, and how he overcame the obstacles that were thrown his way. 260 Mile Canada to Connecticut Run Recap with Jordan Tucker & Jim Kern

My cousin Jordan and myself, with the support of our Crew Chief Jim Kern, ran 260 miles from Canada to Connecticut between June 12th - June 18th. We recorded the show the day after we got back and we recap the highs, lows, and every single day of our trip from Canada to Connecticut. It was seven straight days of ultramarathons where we spent 60 hours and 50 minutes of time on our feet. We ran to benefit Foodshare and I can't thank everyone at the non-profit enough for how special they made the finish line at their office. In total, we raised $13,000 which can allow Foodshare to provide over 30,000 meals for people suffering from food insecurity in these difficult times of COVID-19. I blogged everyday of the trip! My guests today are University of Georgia All-American runners Jess and Sam Drop. Jess and Sam are both entering their 5th year at Georgia with hopes of adding more accolades to their already impressive resumes. In Jess' career thus far, she is a three time member of the NCAA All-Region XC Team. In 2017 and 2019, she was also a NCAA XC All-American. Sam has also been extremely successful in her time at Georgia. She was the 2017 NCAA South Region XC champion, a 2018 honorable mention All-American in the outdoor 10k, and a NCAA XC All-American in 2017 and 2019. Both Drop sisters get the job done in the classroom as well as they've both appeared on the USTFCCCA XC All-Academic Team and most recently in 2020 Jess was named the SEC Women's Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year. My guest today is Darius McDonald. Darius owns his own business 100percentfitness where he is a personal trainer and sports massage therapist. Darius resides in England where he moved from the United States as a child. He evolved into an extremely talented soccer player, but due to an ankle injury his career suffered an abrupt ending. He recently turned to running after being told he shouldn't lace up his shoes from doctors because of his ankle, but has improved drastically and just recently ran a 1:44 half marathon. He took 47 minutes off his personal best from his own training program and has shared his philosophy in a recent blog. Continuing to Push the Limit with Dreux Beirne

My guest on today's episode is Dreux Beirne. Dreux is an endurance athlete who hasn't stopped pushing himself physically and mentally since he was going on 100 mile bike rides in high school. Dreux has completed over 12 marathons and ultramarathons as well as several Ironman triathalons, but his cycling feats are Dreux's proudest endurance accomplishments. In 2015, Dreux biked the entire TransAmerica Bike Trail which is a 4,700 mile trail with 150,000 ft. of elevation gain. He followed this up with biking the Great Divide Trail in 2019. The Great Divide is a 3,083 mile trail with 200,000 ft. of elevation gain that runs along North America's Continental Divide. Chris Barrett is a Registered Dietician, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and member of Green Farms Academy's cross country/track & field coaching staff. Chris was a very successful marathon runner. In 2011, Chris ran the Boston Marathon in a time of 2:48 and followed this up with a finish at the New York City Marathon in 2015. Despite his marathon success, ventricular tachycardia would ultimately end his distance running career in 2017. Since then, Chris has devoted himself to building stronger athletes for a greater purpose through nutrition as well as continuing to give back to the sport through his coaching. A New Perspective on the Game with Collin McCarthy

Collin McCarthy grew up around sports. As soon as he could walk he had a ball, glove, or stick in his hand. Collin excelled in multiple sports, but in high school he decided to focus on football and lacrosse. This paid off as he earned and accepted a scholarship to Loyola University (MD) to play lacrosse. Loyola is a storied program that consistently finishes as a top 10 nationally ranked team and in 2012 the program won its first national title. Collin played two years at Loyola, but his career ended eight months ago when he suffered his last of many concussions that he endured throughout his athletic career. On the show we get into Collin's athletic career, life after lacrosse, dealing with concussions, what sports has taught him and so much more. Scott Jenkins joins me as my guest on Episode 10 of the show! Scott lives and works in London, UK as a Regional Sales Manager for Johnson & Johnson. Scott is also an insane ultra endurance athlete. Scott's resume include numerous 100+ mile ultra footrace finishes including a 35th place finish at Moab 240. Moab is a 240 mile endurance run through Moab, Utah which includes just under 30,000 ft of elevation gain. Scott does many of these endurance challenges for charities as well which makes all his accomplishments even more special. One challenge we talk about on the show was Scott's 2000 mile run over 75 days from Boston, Massachusetts to Austin, Texas. He is currently an ambassador for Operation Smile which provides free and safe surgery for children and adults affected by cleft lip and cleft palate. My final guest on the podcast's "Why Do We Run" series is Jack Johnson. In the past two days we've had the perspective on why we run from a marathon chaser and a 21 time marathoner, but today we get the perspective from Jack. Jack is a 2 time 100 mile race finisher and has completed over 20 ultramarathons in the past 10 years. This wasn't always the case for Jack though because he didn't even start running until the age of 30. In his second road marathon attempt he qualified for Boston then quickly found ultra trail running and has not looked back. In this episode I discuss my recent Aravaipa Strong virtual 100 mile running race. This past Friday and Saturday I ran 100 miles on a quarter mile track which is a little over 400 laps.
