Let's catch up on the state of play this week on The Georgia Politics Podcast. This past week Georgia voters got the results of two statewide polls, one from the AJC in partnership with UGA, and one from Marist. It's worth noting that these two polls were VERY different in sample and result, but the panel focus on the AJC poll, what it means, and who has some catching up to do. The panel also get into some election consequences theory on what would happen if/when Dems regain at least one of the chambers of government under the Gold Dome and wrap up with some general observations from the campaign trail. Underhyped/Overhyped, Play-Along-At-Home and much, much more on today's episode! The conventional wisdom in politics all year has been Republicans will win back the House and maybe the Senate on the wings of Joe Biden's low approval ratings and the economy's high inflation rate. But, ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, that narrative has been suffering. On Tuesday, New York voters chipped away further. We look deep into contests right in Marist's backyard to see what the results really say about the November midterms.Next, we welcome author and U.C. Santa Barbara lecturer Bella DePaulo (@belladepaulo) who coined the term "Singleism" more than a decade ago. Now it's in the dictionary. She explains how society and the law discriminate against single people -- single women especially -- and why some studies about how staying single is hazardous to your health are bunk. Then, we return to the subject of last episode's Fun Fact -- ice cream. Why? Do we really need a reason? This time, we're looking at a bunch of data from the U.S. and the world to see what flavors are the biggest faves. And make sure to stay to the end to hear about the weirdest flavor Jay has ever had. Hopefully it won't "bug" you too much...

Interview Insights Top 3 Takeaways If we are data literate, we can read data faster, interpret them better, and be quicker in making decisions and providing solutions. The goal of data visualization is to provide the most significant degree of understanding in the least amount of effort. It spares us from cognitive overload because it is easier to understand what we can quickly see. Collaboration is about creating something far more significant than you can make independently. Read the Show Notes from this Episode Steve talks about his fourth-grade teacher, Mario Messi, who developed his love of reading. He is part of Steve's pursuit of data literacy. [01:45]How do the best leaders create the best conditions that allow their people to be their best and perform at their best and make sure to celebrate it. [04:29]Recognizing good work is not about physical rewards, like a plaque, but a genuine understanding of your people's contributions. [05:18]The Big Picture and The Big Book of Dashboards are geared toward data visualization practitioners. Steve talks about his fear in writing about this topic of serving some things that experts may already know about. [06:07]People tend to cling to their old tools, like spreadsheets, even if they are not as effectively reporting data as data visualization. Steve encourages us not to fear being a beginner again and embrace data literacy. [08:19]How to know if you are data literate. [10:16]Why do we see so many bar charts? [11:43]Data visualization versus storytelling: How to go from being just data literate to be able to use data to tell a story or make decisions. [14:27]The four components of setting the stage for effective data visualization: 1. Somebody needs to know the data. 2. somebody has to know the tool. 3. Have stakeholders help steer decision-making. 4. Be able to iterate quickly as you get feedback from others.[16:00]Steve shared his experience as one of the many people making graphs for Seth Godin's upcoming book, The Carbon Almanac. [21:15]Chapter eight of the book talks about Charle Menard's chart, which is considered the Monalisa of data visualization, and the problems that Steve finds in it.

The Moral and Political Corruption of Our Children Begins with Books Read to Them in Pre-School   Deborah DeGroff describes how thousands of books for preschoolers through young adults are crammed with extremist ideas on sex, gender, violence, and progressive/Marist politics. Children are taught they are personally responsible for all the injustice in the world, from climate change to racism, making them into depressed, easy targets for extreme leftwing politics as they grow up.  They are taught about becoming activists and, yes, bringing lawsuits, hearing the words activist and lawsuit for the first time in their very young lives.  They are taught to hate police officers and to love despicable politicians. These tactics fill children with guilt, shame and anxiety, and also hate, and should be considered severe  child abuse. This interview was an eyeopener for me and I urge anyone concerned about the deterioration of our society and the abuse of our children in libraries, schools and homes to learn some of the ugly details about the contents of these books and the their language.  Deborah DeGroff is a genuine hero whom the world needs to hear!  Listen and spread the word about what she is teaching us.  I was enlightened—you will be, too.  And if you cannot find the right project to devote yourself to, this might be one the one—protecting our children from child abuse through children's books.

Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 409All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint Peter Julian EymardBorn in La Mure d'Isère in southeastern France, Peter Julian's faith journey drew him from being a priest in the Diocese of Grenoble in 1834, to joining the Marists in 1839, to founding the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856. In addition to those changes, Peter Julian coped with poverty, his father's initial opposition to Peter's vocation, serious illness, a Jansenistic overemphasis on sin, and the difficulties of getting diocesan and later papal approval for his new religious community. His years as a Marist, including service as a provincial leader, saw the deepening of his Eucharistic devotion, especially through his preaching of Forty Hours in many parishes. Inspired at first by the idea of reparation for indifference to the Eucharist, Peter Julian was eventually attracted to a more positive spirituality of Christ-centered love. Members of the men's community which Peter founded alternated between an active apostolic life and contemplating Jesus in the Eucharist. He and Marguerite Guillot founded the women's Congregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. Peter Julian Eymard was beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1962, one day after Vatican II's first session ended. Reflection In every century, sin has been painfully real in the life of the Church. It is easy to give in to despair, to speak so strongly of human failings that people may forget the immense and self-sacrificing love of Jesus, as his death on the cross and his gift of the Eucharist make evident. Peter Julian knew that the Eucharist was key to helping Catholics live out their baptism and preach by word and example the Good News of Jesus Christ. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

August 2: Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Priest1811–1868Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhiteApostle of the Holy EucharistThe Eucharist was the pearl that shone in his eyesThe great artist Auguste Rodin, who sculpted “The Thinker” and other world-famous pieces, met today's saint in 1862 and joined his Congregation as a lay brother. Rodin was despondent over the death of his sister and wanted to abandon art and dedicate his life to God. Saint Peter Julian Eymard burned like a bonfire for God, but this was one vocation his flames would not consume. Father Eymard could see Rodin's prodigious talent in an evocative bust Rodin sculpted of the future saint while Rodin was a religious brother. Eymard told Rodin to return to the world to pursue his artistic calling. So while Father Eymard was as apostolic and demanding as any saint, he was also just as wise as any saint. Not every man who felt a vocation truly had one. It was for the superior to discern the validity of the calling. Father Eymard knew this well from personal experience. He had lived at least three priesthoods inside of his one priesthood: as a diocesan priest in a parish, as a religious priest in the Marist Order, and as the founder of the Congregation of the Most Blessed Sacrament. There was never a time when Peter Julian Eymard did not love Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. At the age of five, he disappeared from home one day. His siblings went in search and found him standing right next to the tabernacle in their local church. When they asked him what he was doing there, little Peter responded, “I am here listening to Jesus.” His father did not want Peter to be a priest but a blacksmith. He relented a bit over time and then died prematurely, removing all opposition. Peter was ordained a diocesan priest in 1834 and served in a parish. But he felt a slightly different call within his call and began to seek admission to the Society of Mary, or Marists. His diocesan bishop was reluctant to let Father Peter go. The bishop relented in 1839, writing to the Marist superior that “I have given sufficient proof of my high esteem for the Society of Mary in giving it such a priest.” Father Peter's personal energy, apostolic zeal, and prayerfulness led to his being named a Marist Provincial. He traveled throughout France and became acquainted with nocturnal and perpetual adoration societies. He became expert at preaching about the Eucharist and at directing lay Eucharistic societies. During a Corpus Christi procession in 1845, he had a mystical experience while carrying the Blessed Sacrament. His attraction to the Eucharist became so personal and so intense that he resolved “to preach nothing but Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ Eucharistic” from then on. Discussions with his superiors about orienting the Marist's more toward a Eucharistic identity were frustrated. It was not their primary charism. On January 21, 1851, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fourviere overlooking Lyon, Father Eymard received the inspiration to found a new Order dedicated exclusively to the Blessed Sacrament. This third call within his one priestly call would consume the rest of his life.In 1857 the Society of the Blessed Sacrament was formally established in Paris. One year later, the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament for nuns would be founded. Father Peter and his few companions did not limit their Eucharistic dedication to piety and prayer. They prepared children to receive First Holy Communion, reached out to lapsed Catholics, and promoted frequent reception of Holy Communion for all Catholics. The normal struggles of every young Congregation bedeviled Father Eymard: extreme poverty, atrocious lodgings, lack of vocations, and problems of growth.Rodin's bust captures the essence of Father Eymard better than any photo. Eymard's mass of hair is out of control, communicating his passionate eccentricity. His gaze is penetrating. He knows the mysteries of God and other secrets of the soul. His thin face, straight nose, and protruding cheekbones say he is a mortified ascetic. And buried in his vest, just over his heart, is a scroll. Only a few words of it can be read. It is a fragment of Emyard's prayer: “O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.” His love of the Eucharist pulsated in sync with his heart, every moment of every day of his fifty-seven years. Our saint is buried in his Congregation's chapel in Paris. He was canonized in 1962 and in 1995 his Optional Memorial was finally included in the Church's universal sanctoral calendar. Saint Peter Julian Eymard, your ardent love of the Blessed Sacrament consumed your thoughts, words, preaching, and life. May such a healthy devotion mark all of our lives. May we satisfy Christ's thirst for our presence by not making Him wait too long between our visits.

Anthony Benevenia emigrated from a small village on the southern coast of Italy to industrial Newark, New Jersey, spending his days as a luxury men's tailor at the renowned American Shops on Broad Street. His great granddaughter, Cara Benevenia, has carried on her family's legacy, designing and manufacturing quality handbags right here in New Jersey!Segment 1Cara takes us through her background going through Marist College's fashion design program. There were difficult times, Cara actually failed out of the program her sophomore year. But by her senior year, Cara received the highest award at graduation by creating the most outstanding collection. Then she started working in the fashion industry, working various jobs before deciding to go out on her own.  Today in New Jersey HistoryIt was on June 27, 1862 that the First New Jersey Brigade, composed of the First, Second, Third and Fourth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiments, fought its first major engagement of the Civil War at Gaines Mill, Virginia. The brigade arrived on the field in the late afternoon to reinforce the hard pressed Union forces. Of the 2,300 men the brigade brought to the battle, 1,072 were killed, wounded or captured. The captured included most of the men of the Fourth New Jersey, surrounded as the units to their left and right withdrew.Segment 2We learn about how Cara's handbags are made and how she put together her designs. We also go through the different bags and how they've evolved over the last couple of years.  New Jersey Fun FactThe Cohansey Aquifer in the Pine Barrens contains 17 trillion gallons of water or enough to cover new Jersey with 10 feet of water. Segment 3Cara is always giving back to different communities, whether its at her alma maters, like Marist or Villa Walsh. She speaks to current students detailing her life and career. She is also passionate about keeping the production of her handbags here in New Jersey, using local artisans to manufacture her products.  Cara Benevenia: https://carabenevenia.com/Instagram: @carabeneveniaThank you to our sponsors:Albert & Whitney CPAs:  awcpasllc.comSilver Stream Studio: @silverstreamstudionjContact the show: mike@greetingsfromthegardenstate.comSupport the show

Sam and Emma host J. David McSwane, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent book Pandemic Inc.: Chasing the Capitalists and Thieves Who Got Rich While We Got Sick, on the fraudulent paths of government money at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. David begins by covering the state of our infrastructure (or lack thereof) at the start of the pandemic, including an incredible 1% of necessary strategic reserves of PPE and other equipment which had been cut down in the wake of Democrats' sequestration attempts in the 2010s and Donald Trump's general crippling of anything governmental. Moving into the actual governmental response, David, Emma, and Sam then dive into how the execution of early pandemic policy genuinely made the preparations look effective, as nearly half of the pandemic response budget was swallowed up by corporations who held largely expired goods, setting a government contracting frenzy shoveling cash to any dude on the streets who said they had access to masks. Exploring this, David walks through his experiences on Robert Stewart's private jets, jumping across the country clearly in search of more excuses for the never-to-materialize masks, before getting into the story of Mike Bowen's Prestige Ameritech, perhaps the only legitimate source of masks that the US Government explored, and how his deal fell through due to personality differences, and touching on how one Fillakit LLC acquired their contract and shipped pre-expanded soda bottles through FEMA and across the country. Next, David McSwane dives into the role of the Kushner children in expanding this fraud beyond government contracts to the Paycheck Protection Program, diving into the myriad pseudo corporations and fake farms that sprang up to claim millions. Sam and Emma also touch on the Connecticut bill attempting to protect out-of-state abortion seekers, the White House's ongoing internal battle over whether or not to cancel student debt, and the incredible fraud of the New York Times as Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns continue to trickle out years-old behind-the-scenes drama from Republicans over Build Back Better. And in the Fun Half: Emma pays a visit to the NLRB's vote tally for the Amazon labor fight while Sam takes a call from John in New Mexico on MR's relationship to their mods and covers the Right's constant ideology that looks for culture war openings, meaning gay people's right to exist is just as much up for debate in 2022 as it was in 1982. Casey from Washington calls in about beetles, wildfire, and Canadian lumber supply, Charlie Kirk explores the positive impacts of recessions (they fuck over workers and undermine their leverage), and Sam and Emma walk through a harrowing Marist poll in the lead-up to the midterms. Ron DeSantis rips off Trump's Gold Card, and Ben Shapiro discusses the violent culture war instigation that was Democrats giving Black folks the right to vote. Will Cain finds out some of his Fox co-hosts might not be vaccinated, David from LA explores the CA Governor's race, and the NLRB Amazon vote trickles in, plus, your calls and IMs! April 28: Saint Peter Chanel, Priest and Martyr1803–1841Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of OceaniaMusumusu axed him to death for no reason at allIn Paris, just a few blocks down the Rue du Bac from the shrine of the Miraculous Medal, is a fine, imposing stone building. There are a lot of fine, imposing stone buildings in Paris, so from the outside this one is not exceptional. But once the visitor passes inside the complex of chapel, museum, dormitories, and garden, he understands what a venerable institution he is visiting—The Paris Foreign Mission Society. Approximately 4,500 missionaries went forth from this unique Society, mostly to Southeast Asia, to build the Church and preach the Gospel. From its beginnings in the seventeenth century until today, but most conspicuously in the nineteenth century, hundreds of priests and bishops from the Society were martyred, died violent deaths, or fell victim to tropical diseases. Of these, twenty-three Paris Foreign Missionaries are canonized saints. Other non-martyr French saints of the same era—Saint John Vianney, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Saint Catherine Laboure—together with the missionary martyrs, sparkle as the jewels in the crown of the vibrant Church of nineteenth-century France.Today's saint, Peter Chanel, was just one such Frenchman who left the comfort and familiarity of home to become a daring and rugged missionary priest. Peter Chanel grew up in rural France working as a shepherd. While in school, he loved to read about French foreign missionaries and wanted to emulate them. So he decided, “I will become a missionary priest!” After seminary studies, Peter was ordained a diocesan priest and served in parishes. But a few years later, he became one of the founding members of the Society of Mary, the Marists. And as a Marist father, he voyaged on the high seas to at last fulfill his missionary dreams. He sailed to one of the most tiny, remote, and unknown islands in the South Pacific. In 1837 Father Peter Chanel stepped ashore the speck of volcanic rock called Futuna to preach there, for the very first time, the name of Jesus Christ. On unknown Futuna, Father Chanel gave his all, at first drip by drip and then all at once. A lay brother who was with him later said of Father Chanel, “Because of his labors, he was often burned by the heat of the sun and famished with hunger, and he would return home wet with perspiration and completely exhausted. Yet he always remained in good spirits, courageous and energetic…” His apostolic labors generated few converts, but there was some progress nonetheless. Like so many missionaries, Peter had to overcome the counter-witness given by fellow European Christians trading in the area who cared little about their religion. In 1841 when the local Chieftain's son asked to be baptized, the Chieftain sent his son-in-law, Musumusu, to stop the conversion. A fight within the family ensued. Musumusu then went to Father Chanel's home and clubbed the priest with an axe until his blood puddled in the dirt. Father Peter was not yet forty years old when his missionary dream was fulfilled in martyrdom, giving Oceania its patron saint. The island of Futuna, in which our saint had such mixed success, converted completely and totally a few years after Saint Peter's martyrdom. Musumusu himself repented of his crime and was baptized. The island is, even in modern times, almost one hundred percent Catholic. An impressive church is the heart and center of every small town. Saint Peter Chanel's body now rests in a large Basilica in the city of Poi. The beauty and smell of tropical flowers always adorn the church. And on the night of April 27, the vigil of his Feast Day, hundreds of Futunians sleep outside the Basilica waiting for the festivities of their saint's feast day to begin the next morning. The brief life and sudden death of Saint Peter Chanel is powerful proof of how the blood of the martyrs waters the seeds of the Church. One sows, another reaps, and still another enjoys the harvest.Saint Peter Chanel, by your suffering and death, you converted a people. You were fearless in adventuring far from home to preach the Gospel. May your blood, spilled so long ago, continue to infuse all missionaries with courage and perseverance in their labors.
