It's interesting how we always try to wait until "the right time" to do meaningful things in our lives. When Shawn left his job roughly a month ago, we made lots of plans - saved money, adjusted expenses, etc. - and yet, it still felt like we needed to make just a few more plans to make sure we were ready. But then, realizing how excessive planning can become a stalling tactic, we went ahead and took the step of faith we knew we were supposed to take so that we could live our lives. These are the lives that we have. The time to live is right now...every second, every moment. We made it to Episode 48 of the Behind the Golf Brand Podcast. In this week's episode, I interview my good friends Zach Vanderveldt from Rain or Shine GolfRain or Shine Golf Founder, Shawn Foley (Zach’s business partner) spent countless hours chipping golf balls around the house and building mini-golf courses to improve his short game during the cold and long Wisconsin winters. With golf being a family affair for the Foley’s, Shawn and his father made many attempts at creating at-home golf experiences, but one instance stands out the most. When Shawn was in high school, the basement flooded. His family decided to implement a subfloor in an attempt to mitigate damages in case of another flood. Additionally, they built a 200 square-foot putting green, laying turf on top and drilling putting cups into the floor. This experience was the inspiration for building the Rain or Shine brand. Today, the company is the industry’s leading unbiased resource to help anyone outfit their home with a dream golf simulator set-up.Support the show (https://legiongolf.co/)

Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Shawn Finder. Shawn is an interesting guy. He grew up as one of North America’s top tennis players and ranked 2nd best at one point. He was literally competing to be the next Andre Agassi. At age 23 that he was told that he had to decide whether to try and become a tennis professional or get an MBA. He chose a university education. You see Shawn is an entrepreneur at heart and he knew that was his calling. At age 24, he started his first venture importing packaging and selling to retailers, but his real passion was selling. So he started a list building company to help salespeople called Exchange leads, grew that to huge success and then started AutoKlose which he just sold to Vanillasoft. I brought him on to talk about his journey, what he’s learned, and how to get more leads and business. www.autoklose.com www.ShawnFinder.com Shawn was top ranked tennis player playing world-wide and go to the age that he needed to make a choice to make it a career or go to school. He got his MBA in finance. And this has served him well as an entrepreneur. He started out working for a company as head of sales, came up with the idea for his first business, Exchange Leads, his 2nd day on the job and 18 months later had built it into his first company. You’ve bootstrapped all of your businesses to success. What is your best advice on how to bootstrap a business? Shawn focuses on growing as lean as possible and focus on profitability. He outsources using Upwork and other mediums for resources. It is also important to be very strategic from the start. Tell us about some of the pitfalls or things you would do differently if bootstrapping again… You have to find a balance between being profitable and using the money in the bank to invest in your business. Don’t keep too much in the bank. You are going to try a lot of things to grow your business or make it successful, be careful not to neglect things that are working and make sure you are investing further in them alongside all the stuff you are trying. Start SEO before even launching the business if you can – organic growth is a huge opportunity. Beware the personal ups and downs that come with having a successful business, but it not translating into personal success and income right away. You will delay personal gratification a lot. Lessons learned going through the acquisition process? Always be prepared for an acquisition. Make sure your financials are up to date, accurate, and dialed in. People don’t acquire you just because of the money you are making or your MRR/ARR. You need to value every area of your business. Your team, your clients, your income, your IP, etc. Working capital is very important to understand in an acquisition. At the 12 Min mark, Shawn explains working capital and how it impacted his sale… Working capital is deferred revenue. Revenue paid up front for services to be rendered in the future. It will be taken off the purchase price from a buyer. This impacts to valuation as it comes off the purchase price and can be higher than you think. Talk working capital early on in an acquisition process so there is no surprise at the end. What did playing tennis teach you about success, business, and life? When Shawn was 18, he started teaching tennis. Training others and top executives opened doors for him and helped learn how to become more professional in communication and business. Networking through your passion(s) and connecting with others that have similar interested – and that can partner or help you is a huge opportunity Coaching others for money is selling and fighting to keep business, so it prepares you for success in a lot of ways. Talk to about selling in today’s world? What works? What doesn’t? It’s getting tougher and tougher and things are changing very fast. The most important thing to leverage is LinkedIn. Being genuine and connecting on the platform is important to help build trust. The biggest problem is all that we are asking salespeople to do from a CRM, tracking, detail standpoint that they don’t have time to sell. Put the sale first. What should people know about the CRM and lead management systems out there and how best to use them? Build a sales stack that has a lot of automation. Automate as much of the process as possible allowing for automate scheduling, etc. Get as much of the busy work out of the way for your people so they can focus on the sale. Best ways to boost sales? Get outside the box. Use Video. Don’t just send an email. Persistence is now more needed than ever. Your job in sales is to follow up. The lack of follow up is the biggest reason sales are not made or lost. Tips to increase conversion rates? Pre-qualify as much as possible. Determine the best buyers for your salespeople to speak to and show your products to. For others, put them into a nurturing sequence or schedule them out with a scheduler software into the future. Look for every way you can to cut wasted time out of the sales process. You have an E-book with over 25 entrepreneurs and sales leaders. If you had to pick the top piece of advice from the book what would it be? Building trust is the #1 thing for selling anything. Do you research ahead of time and know about your prospect. Discuss their pain and get 2nd, 3rd, and 4th levels deep to truly understand it. Don’t solution right away. Listen, get feedback, gain an understanding, and work with them to help them see why you are the right fit. It is their decision. Don’t “sell” them. Follow up, but follow up across multiple channel. Best Quote: People don’t acquire you just because of the money you are making or your MRR/ARR. You need to value every area of your business. Your team, your clients, your income, your IP, etc. Shawn's Misfit 3: Invest in real estate at a young age. It is a great investment over the long term. Bootstrap your company lean and profitable. Build a team that has an amazing culture. Don’t focus on hiring quickly. Hire people you would hire into your family. My guest today is Shawn Eckert. Shawn is an ultra runner who lives in Florida. Shawn battled alcohol and drug addiction before completely turning his life around and finding health. When Shawn's son was born, he decided to lose weight. Although, he did not fully commit himself to his goal initially. It took Shawn a little time to start his journey, but he never looked back losing over 200 lbs from his 446 lb starting point and turning into an ultra-endurance athlete. We hope you are staying warm this week! If you aren't, here are some good true crime stories to listen to while you bundle up by the fire. This week we cover cases involving medical crimes. Rachel tells the story of Shawn Adams, an owner of a consignment store in Waterloo, Indiana. Shawn befriended an antique store owner, Terry Roeder, and her husband, David. Shawn was struggling with a diagnosis of brain wrist cancer and desperately needed some money to help pay for medications and other expenses. Terry was a kind-hearted individual who was willing to help Shawn in her time of need. When Shawn asked for more and more money, Terry and David began to have doubts about Shawn's illness. Nathalie tells us the story of Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng, the first doctor in the United States to be convicted of murder for prescribing deadly amounts of pain medication. When opioids started to be widely prescribed by doctors, we did not have enough information about the addictive properties of these medications. Doctors did not intentionally prescribe these medications intending to harm their patients. Dr. Tseng cannot be included in this category of providers. She continued to overprescribe opioids to her patients even when she was made aware that a few of her patients had overdosed and died. In many cases, she did not perform the physical exams necessary to prescribe these medications and essentially ran a "pill mill" out of her office. We use this case as an opportunity to discuss addiction and needed reforms in the field of pain management. Welcome to another episode of Action & Ambition with your host, Andrew Medal. Today’s guests are Dr. Shawn Dill and Dr. Lacey Book. Dr. Shawn Dill and Dr. Lacey Book, D.C. are coined as small business superheroes for helping more than 700 businesses boost their revenue with tried and true strategies. They grew and scaled a multi-million dollar franchise and specialize in helping service providers pivot into lucrative entrepreneurs with an innovative strategic methodology that teaches marketing, sales, and mindset skills. Their goal is to help transform service providers’ business to create a lasting impact and value on the community it serves by developing relationships. You’re going to love this episode. Let’s get to it! Was Shawn practicing while he was in Costa Rica? (1:48) Shawn graduated from chiropractic college when he was 24 years old. He says, just like any 24 years old, he thought he knew everything. There are no more life lessons you feel like you can learn. He moved to San Jose, Costa Rica, without even thinking about it and not speaking Spanish at all. After one year of practicing, Shawn was broke, struggling, and did not even have pennies to rub together. He had to learn some more significant life lessons through that. Shawn dug his heels in and decided not to give up. After that, he started to become quite successful. They ended up with four chiropractic clinics in San Jose, Olive Waylon, and Li Mon. Shawn Dill was also known in Costa Rica for being the author of the law which regulates chiropractic practices. When Shawn arrived there at first, there were no regulations, and chiropractors could do whatever they want. Shawn took it upon himself to get a law together, lobby it, get it passed through congress, and eventually signed by the President to protect patients from unlawful and unethical practices. What does their program look like? (3:40) Shawn and Lacey started again as chiropractors with an office in Dublin, California. It was called the Specific Chiropractic Center. When Shawn came back from Costa Rica, a place they only use cash, Shawn said he wanted to start a cash only Chiropractic office. No insurance, high price point, and does particular types of techniques. The model turned into a very successful business, causing other chiropractors to start taking notice of it. They grew from one office to over 1415 offices across the world. They were opening their 15th one in the United States just the other day. It’s a chiropractic franchise, and in the chiropractic industry, that is unique. For them, all the trials, tribulations, ups, and downs they faced taught them all that they know. It also made them realize that they could teach these concepts to others. They have now branched out and are teaching it to any service professionals who want to learn. What are some fundamental pillars that they teach and tips that they can give? (11:26) They teach three distinct areas—marketing, sales, and mindset. Shawn and Lacey are firms that believe that you need to have strategies to combat obstacles as they come at you. For service providers, one of the biggest obstacles for them is their mindsets. A lot of service providers come out of school or starting their business, and they get hooked on their struggles, mostly if their product arent not selling at the start. Relationships are also vital in a business setting. You have to have all partners on board with the same mindset. You can have one person who’s a go-getter and entrepreneur and then a person that comes from the 9-5 job, saving every penny, etc. That way, they balance each other out. One of the biggest ‘hiccups’ that they ran into from a business standpoint was their relationship with each other. A quote Lacey likes from Michael Port says, “All business problems, our problems in disguise,” And she feels that this rang very true with her and Shawn when they first got started. Shawn and Lacey both come from those two different worlds mentioned above, and she feels that their strengths came mainly from their differences. Openness and a willingness to compromise are key factors in trying to make a business work between partners. Black Diamond Club The Black Diamond Club is a platform for service professionals who struggle with the business aspect. It lets them join a community of like-minded entrepreneurs and service professionals committed to building bigger businesses, higher incomes, and better lives. In this week's episode, we're taking teams of movie or TV characters and pitting them into a fight of sorts - however we want! The concept of this topic originated in our Facebook group from a listener of who would win between the crew of Alien vs the crew of Predator. We decided to expand this idea into a great topic on the show, taking our own battles and listener battles to the ring. With $3 billion dollars in cash getting stuffed into the little bit of clothing that’s left, between Hustlers and Magic Mike XXL, who takes home the most? Shawn Askinosie is the founder of Askinosie Chocolate, an award-winning, small-batch luxury chocolate company that sources 100% of its beans directly from farmers and shares in the profits.Shawn is a former trial attorney with an incredible record. He is one of only a handful of lawyers in America who obtained a "not guilty" verdict on a death penalty case. But one day he realized he couldn't do it anymore. His body and soul were weary of the grind, so he left.Unsure what to do next he began searching for his true calling, something to feed his soul. He began volunteering extensively, and even sought out a monastery to dig deep into himself. From the depths of sorrow came his joy unmasked, and Shawn founded Askinosie Chocolate. His book Meaningful Work, and his excellent TEDx talk, detail his journey and provide a clear, practical blueprint to Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul.I discovered Shawn's work via Seth Godin, who has written extensively about Shawn and his company. Seth even devoted an entire episode of his podcast Akimbo to Shawn's work. And yet, it was Shawn who reached out to me just last month, asking if he would be a good fit for this podcast.Of course I was elated. We talked some weeks ago about what value we could create for you, and planned a joyous conversation celebrating all the best parts of work and life. And then the world turned upside down.Shawn suddenly finds his own philosophy and principles being tested like never before. At the time of the conversation you are about to hear, Shawn was just hours away from having to furlough half of his small team of 20, in order to give his employees a functioning company to come back to, and protect the mission. When Shawn got on the call, he was clearly distressed. I offered to reschedule, but he refused. In fact, he was grateful for the opportunity to work through his thoughts and feelings in real time, as a case study for leaders of other organizations who are or will soon be faced with similarly difficult choices.I never intended this podcast to be about current events, but in this case it was unavoidable. The first 20 minutes of this conversation are deep, heavy, and mournful. But it's also truthful and honest. After that we turn the corner into a more upbeat and positive chat. This is an incredibly valuable and timely episode. Shawn Harper is a former American football offensive tackle in the National Football League. Harper was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1992. He also played for the Houston Oilers, the Indianapolis Colts, and three years in NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals and Frankfurt Galaxy. Shawn Harper appeared on the hit MTV show Made. He has helped transform thousands of corporate environments, built leadership, trained teams and impacted youth development in schools, and churches with high energy keynote speeches that activate winners. Shawn Harper is the bestselling author of The Winning Edge: 8 Principles That Will Bring Out the Winner in You! and founder/CEO of American Services and Protection, which has provided Ohio small and medium-sized businesses, corporations, municipalities, non profits, government agencies, colleges, and universities and organizations with a wide range of security solutions that focus on providing highly-trained professionals, tailored to the specifics of each job. Podcast Highlights Who is Shawn Harper? For Shawn, it’s very hard to define who he was looking back from today’s perspective. We tend to gloss over the story in the process of becoming who we are. Shawn was plagued with setbacks and adversities in his youth, he was actually voted most likely to fail in school. Adversity can make you or break you. Shawn’s school days were tough and early on he believed himself to be the loser that everyone else thought he was. It wasn’t until he changed his mindset from victim to victor that everything changed. Never allow people to create your world because they will always create it too small. When Shawn made the decision to focus on his dream of playing in the NFL instead of listening to what other people thought he was capable of, nothing was the same. Once you change your focus, you change your life. What was the transition like from playing football to the world of business? In the case of the NFL, there is an established system in place for growth and development. For many people, when they leave that team and system to go do something else on their own the result is usually failure. Even superheroes have friends and support to help them achieve their goals. When athletes leave the game, they must build a team and find mentors to help them in the new arena. That was the secret to Shawn’s later success. It took years for Shawn to come to that realization. All success in life comes from people having a team around them. Playing To Win We are created to win. Your perspective is everything in this regard. We are attracted to winning and nearly everything we do is geared towards winning. In third or fourth grade we are introduced to a different concept called success. Success teaches you production, but winning teaches you re-production. Successful business people are productive, but winners scale their business. A lot of people get dismayed, depressed, and angry because they know they are successful but deep inside they know they are not winning. Winning has been hijacked by success. The secret is to start moving, get out there and start connecting with people in whatev
The Spring Valley Tailgate and BBQ Festival started as an idea — a way to give back to the community. After 10 years it grew into something much bigger. This special episode of the Digital Hospitality podcast was recorded live on the main stage of the 10th annual Spring Valley Tailgate and BBQ Fest with event organizers Shawn Walchef and Derek Marso. Get the inside story of #SVBBQFEST and how it evolved into a huge charitable BBQ block party that became bigger than Cali Comfort BBQ, bigger than Valley Farm Market, and bigger than either Shawn Walchef or Derek Marso could have imagined. Shawn (Cali BBQ Media) and Derek (Valley Farm Markets) previously co-hosted the Behind the Smoke: BBQ War Stories podcast, which wrapped up its 100 episode run in 2019. Derek Marso also co-hosted the #BETonBBQ episode of Digital Hospitality, featuring Chef David Rose. Later in this Digital Hospitality podcast episode, Shawn and Derek are joined by Behind the Smoke’s original producer Cory Wagner (Wvfrnt Media) to talk about the significant planning, organization, digital marketing, and teamwork it takes to host a successful yearly event for charity. “This is where it all started,” said Derek Marso as the SVBBQFEST amateur BBQ teams and vendors were setting up along the street outside Cali Comfort BBQ in Spring Valley. “It’s cool how it’s grown, and what we’ve done.” In 2009, a year after Cali Comfort BBQ opened, Shawn hadn’t met Derek, but knew of his nearby Valley Farm Market. When the idea for the Spring Valley BBQ Fest was dreamed up more than a decade ago, Shawn said the small team had to sit down and figure out exactly how to plan a festival, which takes lots of logistics and help to pull off. “You need sponsors, you need people to buy into the vision. Derek not only bought in. He’s all in,” Shawn Walchef said about his former podcast cohost and fellow event organizer. “It was the start of a friendship.” When Shawn came to Derek all those years ago asking him to sponsor the Spring Valley community event, Derek said he was interested in more. “I said ‘Dude, I don’t want to sponsor. I want to be a part of that. How can we make this thing grow,” Derek Marso said. “And here we are 10 years later. It’s grown into something pretty unique and pretty awesome.” Watch a video recap and on-the-street interviews from the 2019 Spring Valley BBQ Festival on the Cali BBQ Media website at https://calibbq.media/blog/svbbqfest-2019-bbq-block-party-spring-valley/ During the BBQ block party, smells of smoky goodness filled the air, and visitors sampled some of the best food the San Diego area has to offer. The event has amazing food, a great cause, and it’s a lot of fun, too. There was music, contests, family activities, and even a funny “BBQ rap battle” that broke out at the festival with the always entertaining Corbin's Q crew. In addition to Digital Hospitality podcast recording, Ben and Sheli Higgins recorded an episode of their Down at Our Rendezvous podcast live from the festival. “You have gotten us hooked on it. We now feel like family out here,” Sheli Higgins said on the Down at Our Rendezvous podcast. https://youtu.be/GFRtTgcvpgs Here are the top ranked teams for the KCBS Backyard Series competition at #SVBBQFEST. 1st: BZ Fuss 2nd: Heftyboy BBQ 3rd: John’s Sweetfire BBQ 4th: Big John Brand 5th: Cook’s Cookin’ 6th: Maynard’s BBQ 7th: Benick’s BBQ 8th: Soak N Smoke BBQ 9th: Double D’s BBQ 10th: BBQ Junkies “It’s an eclectic group of people who care about the cause more than themselves,” Shawn Walchef said about everyone who comes together and participates in the Spring Valley festival every year. “It’s been a great journey,” Derek Marso said. “It’ll be exciting to see what the future holds.” *** Get more details about the annual Spring Valley Tailgate and BBQ Festival on Cali BBQ Media’s website: https://calibbq.media/events/svbbqfest.
