Two second rule: System1 and JCDecaux effectiveness research shows 70% of Out-of-Home ads fail, the brands nailing it – and seven easy fixes

A world first creative benchmarking study from System1 and JCDecaux has run stacks of Australian Out-of-Home ads through its globally-renowned effectiveness scoring system and drawn a stark conclusion: 70 per cent of outdoor ads fail to move the needle. Andrew Tindall, SVP – Global Partnerships at System1, goes even further: “No-one understands how Out-of-Home works,” he says, particularly the critical need to land the brand within two seconds. At face value, not a wholly positive headline for the medium. But System1 has come up with a formula that, its data strongly suggests, massively improves effectiveness. It’s not rocket science. For example, just placing your logo at the top of an Out-of-Home ad increases brand recognition four times versus a logo parked at the bottom. Likewise be consistent – entertaining and never boring – and keep messaging simple and positive to get much higher brand lift, and ultimately, sales. On that front, Tindall says there is a false divide between brand and performance campaigns: The long, i.e. brand, always drives the short, i.e. performance. The research with JCDecaux, “allows us to add a lot more nuance to what is a very non-nuanced industry” and underlines why brand and demand “need to be brought back a little bit closer together”. Brands nailing Out-of-Home effectiveness locally include Compare the Market with its Meerkats, Uber Eats with the Wiggles and Simon Cowell, Specsavers and Ocean Spray, per Tindall. Sephora’s latest campaign, he says, is one of the highest scoring Out-of-Home ads System1 has ever tested. The bottom line? “The single standout thing for me in this research is it confirms that creative is the make and break of how effective a campaign can be.” Tindall, plus JCDecaux’s Cris Smart and Scott Jenkins, unpack the research’s key findings – and the seven simple steps to massively boost Out-of-Home effectiveness.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sports are stepping into a leading role when it comes to sustainable development. We've seen this in design of stadiums such as Amazon's Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, and with global events such as the Paris Olympics and upcoming 2026 World Cup. But as the sports industry places an emphasis on sustainability, a question remains: Will that commitment to sustainability resonate with sports fans? Experts Scott Jenkins and JLL's Rex Hamre join up on this episode of Trends & Insights to talk about the role sports arenas are playing in the drive toward greater sustainability. Joy is...Making Memories.Scott Jenkins could be called ‘200-mile man' but it is the messaging behind the miles that perhaps most distinguishes him, as well as the actual feats of endurance. The attentive amongst you might recall a previous episode with Scott's brother Rhys, and this was a super opportunity to share an alternative perspective on some of those stories, as well as telling new ones. Like his brother, Scott is an ultra distance runner, originally from Wales, and is the current British record holder for the Moab 240 race in Utah. He is also the first Welshman to complete this race, Bigfoot 200 and Cocodona 250, as well as being the 2nd ever Welshman to complete Badwater 135. He started his ultramarathon journey running from Boston to Austin: a total of 2000 miles or 75 marathons in 75 days. Through these challenges, Scott has raised over £87,000 for a variety of different charities and, in 2015, he completed an Operation Smile mission in Mekele, where he assisted in screening and in theatre for the repair of Cleft Lips and Palates. Since then, he has been selected as one of three UK Ambassadors for the charity. Scott is a gracious man, who speaks thoughtfully and with great humility. His physical strength belies a story of a shy boy who found his voice through running and whose ultimate wish is to bring hope to faces that have never experienced the simple joy of a smile. We thought a lot about what gives life purpose; the benefits of a more instinctual and grounded way of being; holding ourselves accountable, and what we can learn from reaching beyond what might be possible. On this episode of the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Scott Jenkins, the president and CEO of ZS2, a Calgary-based startup that manufactures sustainable building products using magnesium-based cement. Jenkins explained while magnesium is one of the oldest materials used in construction, Portland cement based on limestone is the current dominant material in use for residential, commercial and industrial applications. ZS2 uses magnesium drawn from oil and gas waste and other sources to create cement that creates much less CO2 during production with magnesium binding to carbon instead of releasing it. Jenkins also explained the various products the company produces including TechBrick, TechBoard and TechPanels and delved into how Calgary's traditional role as an oil and as hub dovetails with a growing technology sector. you can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section. It's 2019 and ultrarunner Scott Jenkins has just completed 224 miles out of the 240-mile race which follows the Colorado River as it carves its way through Utah. He's cruising in 18th place and there are only 16 miles to go. Everything is going to plan. Sleeping would only prolong the agony.  But that's when the wheels fall off. Scott's running stride devolves from seasoned amateur to hungry zombie. He doesn't know where he is and he's seeing things that aren't there. Scott finishes (becoming the first Welshman to do so), but his sleep-deprived, feverish spell cost him 10 hours and almost 20 spots on the race ladder. Two years removed from his delirious finish, Jenkins returns to Moab - the perfect arena for this ultramarathoner's comeback - and sets a new British record in one of the world's toughest races.
