Today I share the story of Glenn Cunningham who was one of the best distance runners of all time. He held the world record in the mile for three years. He held several Olympic and NCAA records at one point. But as a child, doctors told him he would never walk. Cunningham had both legs terribly burned in a fire, and he barely survived and nearly had his legs amputated. Doctors said he would never walk, but never underestimate the will of an 8-year-old. Cunningham taught himself how to walk in his yard holding the fence. As he got stronger he was in terrible pain when he walked, but when he ran the pain went away. And that was the humblest of beginnings for one of the great athletes of the 1930's. Amin. (Dod).

Ben Mumme is the founder, curator, and podcast host of the Living Your Greatness Podcast. The purpose of the podcast is to inspire millions of people across the world to achieve greatness and enhance their overall personal well-being.  Living Your Greatness is becoming the go-to resource that CEOs, elite athletes, professional coaches, and entrepreneurs rely on to upgrade themselves. The podcast helps you master the best of what other people have already figured out. __ In this episode, Ben talks about the anatomy of a champion mindset. To become a true champion, we must think like a true champion. Additionally, they must have a clear vision, take small steps forward, reflect on the learning experiences, and build learning into betterment. Ben then explains that sports can teach us a lot about a champion mindset. Many natural athletes don't make it, while other athletes with deficiencies do. For instance, Pete Gray, with only one arm, made it to the major leagues; successful golfer Ben Hogan was an uncoordinated child, and the runner Glenn Cunningham's legs were badly burned. The many obvious examples of failed naturals and successful, though flawed, athletes should have debunked the myth of talent, but it hasn't. Ben speaks about 3 inspiring stories of athletes (Michael Jordan, Wilma Rudolph, Jackie Joyner-Kersee) who successfully demonstrated a champion mindset. Whether it is sports or other areas of life, there are 10 character traits that are significantly valuable when deciding to foster a champion mindset: Persistence Fearlessness Think Before You Speak Sincerity Positive Attitude Integrity Helpfulness Ambition Responsibility Compassion __ Host: Ben Mumme Twitter: https://twitter.com/mumme_ben  Medium: https://benjaminmumme.medium.com/  YouTube: https://bit.ly/3fAcFrt  Instagram:   https://www.instagram.com/livingyourg...  __ Let's Connect

For some folks, there's nothing more incentivizing than being told you "can't" do something.   As a young boy, Glenn Cunningham was involved in a serious accident that almost cost him his legs. I miei occhi erano come piattini."

If you've ever struggled, had self-doubt, felt trapped, at a dead-end, or like your life wasn't igniting, then do we have the show for you. Today I'll be talking with John O'Leary, one of my all-time heroes, both him and his mom, though I just heard about him a few weeks ago. He is the author of the future New York Times Best-Seller, "On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life", and one of the most inspirational people I have ever had the pleasure to have on the show. Today we'll talk about John's miraculous journey, one that should have killed him, and instead helped mold him into the person he is today. We'll talk about going through our own fires in life, flipping the ignition, learning to burn, and out of the fire, creating something more beautiful than we ever could have imagined. That plus we'll talk about the world's greatest mom, accumulating baseballs, Phra Phuttha Maha Suwan Patimakon and what that means, and why in the world, you'd want someone to get in a hockey brawl for you.   Key Points Discussed: What is a milkshake promise? What happened to John when he was 9. How the experience became a true blessing in John's life. How his older brother Jim changed and became a state hero (lifesaver of the year for Missouri) How his sisters Amy and Sarah became true hero's as well. Why he asked his sister for a knife so he could kill himself How his seven-year-old sister risked her life (3 times!) to save her brother John. What his mom told him he credits with saving his life What his mom says when he asks if he's going to die How do we light our internal flame? What we can learn from Robin Williams. How do we turn our lives around? What you can do to ensure that tomorrow is better than today Journals ‘why me' in the morning and in the evening ‘what can I do to ensure that tomorrow is even better than today? What Big Roy had to do to him, to keep the scars from pulling him into the fetal position How do you become extraordinary??? “We have to forget everything we've learned and realize we are BORN extraordinary!!!” The importance of asking ‘why do you choose to thrive?” Why his story with his Dad, Denny will be a second book. Who was Glenn Cunningham – and how did he help hundreds if not thousands of kids. Can you tell us about the announcer Jack Buck, the voice of the Cardinals? How John O'Leary day at the ballpark took place How you can make a huge difference in someone else's life – simply! How Gino Cavallini got in a hockey brawl on John's behalf. Why he wanted his book to be a guide to waking up from Accidental life.   Additional Resources: www.JohnOlearyInspires.com   …….   For free meditations, weekly tips, stories, and similar shows visit: www.InspireNationShow.com   To support the show and get even more great tools, tips, and behind-the-scenes access, visit: www.Patreon.com/InspireNation   And to follow Inspire Nation (and the lives of Michael and Jessica) on Instagram, go to www.instagram.com/inspirenationlive

Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had devastated the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be a cripple throughout his life. But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be a cripple. Much to be the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just dangled there, lifeless. Ultimately he was discharged from the hospital. But his determination to walk was indomitable. At home, when he was not in bed, he was confined to a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the picket fence, raised himself up and then stake by stake, he began dragging himself along the fence, his resolve to walk undeterred. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron persistence and his resolute determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk haltingly, then to walk by himself and then to run.He began to walk to school, then run to school, to run for the sheer joy of running. Later in college he made the track team.In February 1934, in New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run – this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world’s fastest mile.An epitome of the power of positive thinking and faith in one’s self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant testimony to how one can bounce back even when all odds are stacked against one, to the extent that death seemed the preferable option. Do You Think You’ll Never Walk Again? All of us have times in our lives that are so devastating that we wonder if we’ll ever be able to walk again. “We all experience times of testing, which is normal for every human being. But God will be faithful to you. He will screen and filter the severity, nature, and timing of every test or trial you face so that you can bear it. And each test is an opportunity to trust him more, for along with every trial God has provided for you a way of escape that will bring you out of it victoriously.”1 Corinthians10:13TPTThe Bible tells us that testing or what some call temptation is not from God…ever. The source is the enemy of our souls. There are two types of temptation or testing—1) to entice to sin and 2) troubled times because of people. Here we have the comfort that we all experience tough times but God is faithful. He SCREENS AND FILTERS the SEVERITY, NATURE, AND TIMING of all trials. Unfortunately, people can sometimes cause problems that He never intended for us but each TEST IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRUST HIM MORE. And here’s where the promise gets crazy. With every trial He’s provided us a way of escape where we come out of it victoriously. That phrase “way of escape” literally means to STEP OUT of it. With His guidance, comfort, and wisdom, you can step out of your current trial and enter into a new life IF you trust Him. It may take some time but it will happen. What Can We Learn From Glenn Cunningham? 1. He refused to believe what others told him about himself. 2. He did whatever it took even throwing himself out of his chair.3. He did things daily that got him closer to his goal.4. He didn’t allow little progress or setbacks to stop him.5. He found joy in what was once lost—running. Questions to Ask Yourself1. What are you believing that are lies from others?2. What are you willing to do to turn your life or current situation around?3. What are daily things you can do starting today?4. And what will you find joy in once you are past your current situation?

Today I'll be talking with John O'Leary, one of my all-time heros, both him and his mom, though I just heard about him a few weeks ago. He is the author of the future New York Times Best-Seller On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life, and one of the most inspirational people I have ever had the pleasure to have on the show. Questions and Topics Include: What is a milk shake promise? What happened to John when he was 9. How the experience became a true blessing in John's life. How his older brother Jim changed and became a state hero (lifesaver of the year for Missouri) How his sister's Amy and Sarah became true hero's as well. Why he asked his sister for a knife so he could kill himself How his seven year old sister risked her life (3 times!) to save her brother John.
