In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek and brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Vince and Georgie Strawbridge, one-third of the six-person thru-hiking family. We last caught up with the Strawbridges in early 2020, when they were freshly off their hike of the PCT. Since, they've conquered both the CDT and the AT, completing the Triple Crown as a full family.  We dive into the high and lowlights of these treks from the perspectives of Vince (dad) and Georgie (the youngest in the family). They share insights on navigating the CDT during COVID, overcoming multiple bouts of hypothermia, how one Strawbridge daughter managed to hike the CDT despite being severely anemic, why the AT ranked as their least favorite of the Triple Crown trails, hiking the AT as a group of seven (adding another kiddo for this one), some especially serendipitous instances of trail magic, and Vince's unconventional—and hilarious—efforts to convince his wife, Monica, to take on another thru-hike, including a group therapy session with their friends.  We wrap the show with new of a job opening at Backpacker Radio, we ponder how far from a star you should be before it's safe to stare, a FMK of places to get wet, a breakdown of how much more expensive it is to hike the AT these days, and the Triple Crown of human names that sound like they could double as state names. He gives us an overview of these trips, the inspiration behind starting Pa'Lante Packs and now Meadow Physics Gear, why he doesn't hike with a water filter or satellite communicator, his tendency toward being a "water princess," the time he barked at a cow and the cow fought back, his run-ins with an angry black bear and a mountain lion, and much more. In this conversation, I interviewed Brandon Wise, who also completed the Calendar Year Triple Crown. We discuss his experience with the Yellow Deli "commune", his motivation for attempting the Calendar Year Triple Crown, and the challenges he faced along the way. We also talk about the social aspect of thru-hiking and the importance of camaraderie on the trail. Support Brandon Weis' book "This is Gonna Hurt" about the Calendar Year Triple Crown: https://amzn.to/3XQzzRT And Follow Brandon on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/naturalhorsepower/?hl=en Overall, the conversation highlights the physical and mental challenges of long-distance hiking and the transformative power of the outdoors. Takeaways The Calendar Year Triple Crown is a challenging feat that requires careful planning and determination. Thru-hiking can be a solitary experience, but the social aspect and camaraderie with other hikers can greatly enhance the journey. Challenges and obstacles are inevitable on a thru-hike, but overcoming them can lead to personal growth and a sense of accomplishment. The Yellow Deli cult experience highlighted the importance of being open-minded and adaptable while on the trail. Writing a book about the thru-hiking experience can be just as challenging as the hike itself. Thru-hiking the Calendar Year Triple Crown involves hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail in a single calendar year. Challenging weather conditions, such as blizzards and freezing temperatures, can be encountered during long-distance hikes. Camaraderie among hikers is a significant aspect of the thru-hiking experience, with shared struggles and bonding over shared experiences. The decision to pursue long-distance hiking instead of other life paths, such as attending law school, can be influenced by the desire for adventure, personal growth, and financial considerations. Future plans for hikers may include pursuing ultra running and international hiking, such as the Great Divide Trail in Canada or the Four Corners loop in the United States. Long-distance hiking offers a unique opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and a deep connection with nature. Sound Bites "You could say the Count of Your Triple Crown saved you a bunch of money." "Yeah, that was one of the weirder nights of my entire life." "I mean, we all had a lot of time and not a lot to do. I just put mine to some good use, I guess." "Humans were strange creatures because, you know, one of my favorite memories of the whole year is something that was pretty awful in the moment and like super miserable but I look back on it now and I can't help but smile every time." "Yeah, the hardest part's starting. You can always quit. It's not a big deal." "Yeah, gotta get my first one. Come on. Spent all my money on thru-hiking. It's the real trick. But it's worth it to spend on the experiences for sure." Scott Cooper is an ultra-trail runner from Toronto although he's been living in Calgary for the last five years.  Prior to moving to Calgary, Scott had an accomplished triathlon career and even spent a year racing professionally.  Only three weeks after he moved west, Scott found himself on a Sinister 7 relay team and as he says, “the rest is history.”   He found himself both loving trail running and excelling in really long ultramarathons.  Scott has earned top podium spots in almost every race he has done including Sinister 7 100 Solo, Fat Dog 120,  Black Spur Ultra 108K, Rivers Edge Ultra 100k, and the Calgary Marathon 50K. Most recently Scott won the inaugural Sinister Sports Divide 200 mile race in southern Alberta, Canada's first event of its kind. The 201 mile (324k) course runs along parts of the Great Divide Trail, climbing 12,335m in elevation with a time limit of 100 hours.  By crossing the finish line in first place, he established a new course record of 49h47m59s  - one that will be hard to beat.  In this episode we learn about Scott and his running background, but spend most of our time discussing everything to do with the Divide 200.  He talks about his preparation and strategy leading into the race, how he managed his nutrition, hydration, sleep and feet, and we finish up with some great advice for anyone thinking of tackling a 200 miler next year. Two hundred miles is still a distance that is largely a mystery to most runners, however more and more people are becoming tempted to take on the challenge.  If you are curious to learn more about what this new level of craziness is all about and what it takes to excel in multi day continuous races, keep listening!Resources we discussed in this episode:Our episode with Reinier Paauwe (Scott's pacer)Ren's Toes Instagram: @rens.toesConnect with Scott:Instagram: @scottcooperultraConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! Tyler Blaney is a husband, father-of-three, and a real estate agent from Calgary AB.  He also happens to be a thru hiker turned ultrarunner with a great story.  He started running cross country in high school while living in Kelowna, BC and fell in love with his ability to cover great distances in a short period of time and the sense of adventure this provided him.  After high school he stopped running and spent over a decade of cycling.  During COVID Tyler felt the need to reconnect with who he was and in 2021 found himself backpacking the Great Divide Trail from Waterton to Jasper - a distance of 850km in 35 days.  On the last day of the thru hike he decided to run the 44km Skyline Trail and found that it was easy!  Following his hike Tyler wanted to preserve the incredible base he had built and took up trail ultrarunning, completing three ultras in 2022.  As if this wasn't enough of an accomplishment, he did it all with a significant back injury that added a level of complexity to his adventures.  Hiking and running didn't necessarily help his back pain, but they didn't make it worse. Tyler describes himself as a curious human who wants to see what he is capable of in all areas of his life while using a daily practice of gratitude. He utilized this mindset to accomplish feats of endurance that many would never even consider possible. We close this episode with a discussion on what still scares Tyler after all he's experienced and his comments reveal the wisdom of someone who has spent many  miles exploring what it means to be the human he wants to be.Connect with Tyler:YouTube: youtu.be/wgQDH0bIrwwInstagram: @tyblaneyFacebook: @tyblaneyPodcast: Game ChangersConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! Welcome back to the Off Trail Podcast! We are bringing in Season 3 with a (2) part series as our co-hosts, Constantine and Magpie, break down all things The Te Araroa Trail. The Te Araroa Trail is a 1880~ (official) mile hike in New Zealand. With the alternates and connecting footsteps of this hike, in total 1909.4 miles were hiked and 108.6 canoed, totaling 2016.2 miles of human powered movement. As of 2022/2023 season, if you hike it in the "purist" form this will be the mileage that you find is actually on the ground. It connects the top of the North Island at Cape Reinga to the bottom of the South Island at Bluff traversing the entire length of the country. In this second part of our 2 part series we focus on the South Island. Don't be fooled, even though they are all one country, these two islands are drastically different for the thru-hiker. We begin the show with a long rant on energy drinks as you demand. Magpie breaks the time wall, we chat good ol' boys of New Zealand, and we discuss how cookies are a part of our figure. We have an exclusive as we try not one, but two, energy drinks! First, we begin with the classic "V" drink that is available in every corner store in NZ. Then we focus on the one and the only "Mother Energy" which fully captured our heart with its marketing copy. "Live life your way." "Mother is calling, pursue your dreams." "Rip into some Mother." All very strange and alarming quotes from their poem... well, nothing to do but drink their off brand Red Bull. Okay, enough enery drink talk, lets talk the South Island of NZ. We begin by realizing that rocks can't tell Magpie what to do and then focus on the Queen Charlotte Track. A wonderful piece of trail that begins every Southbounders adventures on the South Island. Excellent grading, epic views, and great camping. Don't get used to the graded track though, soon it will change! We then discuss the Richmond Ranges... oh the Richmond Ranges. We chat sending food to the SI, confusion on the Bealey Hotel, and the ranges being the most technically challenging part of the TA. We chat predicting pace and the lack thereof, 2mph becoming a blistering speed, and orange posts. We chat flooding, being stuck at a hut, and wether or not mountains are ladies. We chat Nelson Lakes one of the most gorgeous places along the TA, hiking hut to hut, and the varities of huts. We chat the freedom of wild camping again and the joy in walking until tired, backcountry hut passes, and the DOC putting so much time, work, and energy into creating huts. We chat routes, paths, and tracks and briefly touch on their designations. We chat "Middle South Island Stuff" and the change of flavor the trail becomes as it transitions into river beds, passes, mixed track, and the ability to average and estimate out one's pace for the day. We chat expansive views, reminders of the Great Divide Trail, and three giant water hazard zones known as the Raikia, Rangitata, and Queenstown. The first almost always unfordable with a 30+ mile alternate, the second fordable (use own judgment!), and the third many options around. We chat Lake Tekapo being another "changing point", waypoints called Tussocks, concious cruelty, and of course some looney tunes living! We chat wind, sand flies vs. mosquitoes, and lotions and potions. We give massive shout outs to people who do this as their first hike and think going forward they will have many skills for any trail. We chat Longwood Forest, Linton Mt, and life being a circle. We end with a Ramen Rating Review of both islands, and well we were quite surprised with Magpie's results! To learn more about us click below: Website: www.ElevenSkys.com

Kathryn and Kristi catch up with cyclist and diversity advocate Brooke Goudy. Brooke's love for cycling started as a child when she got her first bike as a Christmas present, and grew to a life-long passion. Brooke moved to Colorado and found a new passion in mountain biking, but she was struck by the lack of representation of people of color in the sport. This led her to seek out other women of color in the mountain biking community, and she joined the Denver branch of the national organization Black Girls Do Bike. Brooke is now the co-leader of the Black Girls Do Bike Denver, and continues her mission to help minority groups feel seen and represented in cycling. An impressive cyclist in her own right, this past summer Brooke rode the Tour Divide. Fidgit and Neon share their story and the mission of Her Odyssey which is to travel the length of the Americas by non-motorized means, connecting the stories of the land and its inhabitants. Listen in as they share stories from the time they met on the Pacific Crest Trail, the uniqueness of hiking in South America and their most recent journey on the Great Divide Trail. Fidget and Neon's journey is much more than the miles traversed, but an intimate connection formed with the land and the people who live near it.  Bethany's love of mountains began when she was 4 years old, following her father into the Andes of Ecuador and Chile. As Bethany walks through the areas where she first learned of the beauty and possibilities of the world—as well as the deep inequalities—she hopes to inspire everyone who follows to dream big and to foster access for women and children to resources, both internal and external, which can help to make their dreams reality. (read entire bio here)Originally from Pennsylvania, Lauren (aka Neon) spent much of her younger days discovering the outside world, sometimes with one or more of her three siblings. As she grew up, she continued expanding her hobbies and interests in the outdoors. In this episode of Walking Distance presented by The Trek and hosted by Blissful Hiker (Alison Young), we are joined by Dan Durston, a biologist, Canadian gear designer, and owner of Durston Gear. Durston hiked the Great Divide Trail in the Canadian Rockies as well as the Pacific Crest Trail, and also holds some Fastest Known Times – of the Stein Traverse in British Columbia and the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. Dan uses his backpacking expertise to design simple and light outdoor equipment.  Blissful Hiker covers Dan’s evolution from gear reviews to gear designs, the inevitable compromises made when designing and selecting gear, and how gear can unite the hiking community. Gossamer Gear discount code: Use code “walkingdistance” to save 15% off your cart at GossamerGear.com Interview with Dan Durston 1:30 - Dan Durston is a self described nerd, someone who likes analytical problem solving. While hiking the Great Divide Trail, he used the time to think about how to optimize his gear, and eventually founded Durston Gear. 2:48 - After discovering the ultralight community, Dan was determined to adopt the style. 3:48 - You compare setting up gear in your backyard and setting up in a rainstorm, which are very different. You think about if gear will really work under difficult circumstances. 5:22 - You said a single pole pyramid is what you aspire to, can you talk about that? 6:22 - So on the PCT, you were using other peoples’ gear, and thinking about how to make them better? 7:26 - You said something about how gear companies use the phrase “no compromises,” and how that isn’t true. What are the inevitable compromises? 8:12 - Can you briefly describe how your tent works? 10:13 - How did you get started? At first you just wanted to modify your gear, which required a sewing machine. What was that experience? 12:05 - Dan taught himself the basics of sewing via Youtube. He’s also been active for years on gear sites, which served as his introduction to the industry. 13:40 - Your gear modification seems like it was serving your own hiking. Why did you decide to start a company? 15:58 - One of the things I noticed on your website is that you use polyester, and not Dyneema. Why not? 17:27 - Earlier you mentioned loving what you’re doing because of the community, and we learn things from each other. You're on your own doing this company, but there’s community feedback.  19:25 - One idea I got after reading about your backpack is the issue of not being able to find what I need when I’m thru hiking. You seem to have thought about that a lot when designing your pack. 21:05 - I wanted to ask you about you continuing your hiking. How do you find the time? 22:00 - What about seeing other hikers’ experiences, and how have you seen hiking change since you’ve been in the community? 24:32 - Dan also holds some Fastest Known Times – of the Stein Traverse in British Columbia and the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana.   Mentioned in this episode: Durston Gear The Volumetric Efficiency of Trekking Pole Shelters by Dan Durston Get all of the Walking Distance Podcast episodes. There are people who run and/or cycle, and then there are runners and cyclists. There are runners and cyclists, and then there are racers of those two demanding sports. There are racers running and cycling who are competitive, and then there are those racers who win. There are racers who win, and then there are those successful athletes who are desirable by sponsors and news cameras. There are some of those winning desirable racers who are wired differently, doing shit most people would never attempt. I am talking about ultra-athletes.There are ultra-athletes, and then there is John Stamstad.John and I have known each other for over 25 years and here in episode #10, we both jump straight into the conversation about the huge life issues in each other’s lives that we both share: Depression, addiction, using athletics to help counter-balance our addictions, twice divorced, parenting through both said divorces, fascination with psychology and how our athletic bodies work, a multitude of major injuries and several brushes with death out there doing adventuring, our love for winter sports, and much more. John addresses his addictions, his philosophy on remaining realistic with our goal setting, his scariest moments, and much more. John gets brutally honest and shares details of his life that most people would normally hide from public view, but not John Stamstad. It is a brutally honest talk with the OG of Adventure Sports. Pioneering sponsorship for adventure sports more than 20 years ago, thousands of athletes and adventurers around the world have John Stamstad to thanks for laying the foundation for some of the paychecks they receive today. John’s credentials are too numerous to list but here are a few highlights:Running on foot, John covered the entire 200-mile John Muir Trail which goes through Yosemite, unsupported. John has twice run the UTMB, an ultramarathon race in Chamonix, France up and around the highest mountain in western Europe. John ran 100 miles, unsupported, on the White Rim Trail in Utah, pushing a Baby Jogger full of drinking water so he did not end up as a snack for the desert buzzards lurking overhead. On his bicycle, John’s adventures and accomplishments dwarf his running career:John rode his mountain bike 3,500-miles off-road across the Australian continent including straight through the famous Aussie Outback, just for the challenge of it; one hell of a challenge. In 1999, John decided oh what the heck, why not ride his mountain bike the entire length of the Great Divide Trail that follows the Continental Divide from Banff, Canada to the Mexican border in New Mexico. And while that didn’t seem to be enough of a challenge, John decided to set an aggressive goal of how fast he thought he could do it and keep time for the entire 2,500 miles of challenging mountain trails. This Great Divide challenge that John cooked up would lay the groundwork for the duplicated timed ultra-challenge that still thrives today. And oh yeah, of course, there is the little fact that John in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. For me, this is the holy shit sentence: John has won the Iditasport bike race in Alaska 8 times. Holy hell. And much more. This dude John Stamstad, a great man, a fascinating human, and an athlete I consider to be in a class by himself. John is now writing a book, hoping to be done in spring 2021. Please tune in to hear the story.

Dreux has completed over 12 marathons and ultramarathons as well as several Ironman triathalons, but his cycling feats are Dreux's proudest endurance accomplishments. In 2015, Dreux biked the entire TransAmerica Bike Trail which is a 4,700 mile trail with 150,000 ft. of elevation gain. He followed this up with biking the Great Divide Trail in 2019. Last year, my podcast with Sym Blanchard became the 2nd most downloaded WanderLearn episode. It was super popular because he really was a fun guest. You must listen to it before listening to this podcast. Because he attracted so many listeners, I invited him back to the show! I begin the podcast asking Sym the most profound question I've always wanted to ask him. After that, we move onto discussing how he has used DNA testing to inspire his travel. He's used these four DNA testing kits to find thousands of relatives and to understand his origins. We discuss the pros and cons of each one: 23 and Me - best for a health test Ancestry DNA - best for trace your lineage  Family Search - Although it's connected to the Church of Latter-Day Saints, is useful to go back to King Cnut.  My Heritage - to build a family tree - Sym has 19,000 relatives We referenced AJ Jacobs's, It's All Relative book. I mention my defining the Sub-Sahara Africa article where, in the comments, an Ethiopian tried to insult me by pointing out that my ancestors were "slave-traders." Sym opens up and discusses why his strained relationship with his daughter. What went wrong? What lessons did he learn? How about having a girlfriend and how it is to manage that relationship when he's usually on the road. How do we balance having sympathy for victims and pushing for tough love? We talk about how Rejoice Tapon could see herself as a victim as I describe in my TEDx Talk about being a black sheep. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVfADBIsgB8 Sym discusses his trip to Brazil and his quest to finish the Continental Divide Trail (60% done!) and the Great Divide Trail. Sym talks about El Camino de Santiago. We discuss how sustainable his way of life is.  We talk about how spousal support and divorce work. About 70 minutes into the podcast, we talk about politics. I say that it's extremely rare that a US President wins more than 60% of the popular vote. Fact check: Only 3 US Presidents have gotten over 60% of the popular vote (Harding, FDR, and Nixon) and LBJ was the only President to get 61% of the vote. No other president got more. Lastly, I reveal my patented way to win ANY argument - guaranteed!  More info You can post comments, ask questions, and sign up for my newsletter at http://wanderlearn.com. We also talked about the Great Divide Trail and the sometimes complicated process that's involved when building a 1,100 km continuous trail that crosses through several land use areas in Alberta and British Columbia. From public land, provincial parks, and National Parks, GDT passes through them all to make a continuous route that is increasingly used by international visitors and locals.  Dave explains how truly wild the country is and encourages our listeners to get out and explore it!
