Did you know that up to the Partition of India in 1947, Kashmiri Muslims lived in conditions that very much resembled serfdom? Exploitation of Kashmiri Muslims was particularly notable during the Dogra Dynasty, which ruled the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from 1846 to 1947.Since their partition in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought four wars: in 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999. Based on research and information, three of these wars were specifically about the Kashmir region. In this interview, I bring historical perspective to conflicts and crises about Kashmir by asking my guest scholar the following questions: ►Is Jammu and Kashmir different than Kashmir?►Who are Kashmiris?►Why did Persian missionaries visit Kashmir?►What happened to Kashmir after the Mughal Empire?►What does it mean that Kashmir was a princely state?►Did the British introduce a more egalitarian system in Kashmir? If so, why?►Why Kashmir was an autonomous region under British rule and until recently in the Republic of India?►Why is Kashmir called the Indian Administered Kashmir?►How did Kashmir become a part of India?►What was the Kashmir massacre that happened in 1947?►How are Kashmiris 'othered' in India?►What is it about Kashmir that makes it different from all other Indian states?►Is Kashmir an integral part of India?►Would my guest scholar be able to freely talk about Kashmir's history in India?

In February 2024, Gladstone AI produced a report for the Department of State, which opens by stating that "The recent explosion of progress in advanced artificial intelligence … is creating entirely new categories of weapons of mass destruction-like and weapons of mass destruction-enabling catastrophic risk." To clarify further, they define catastrophic risk as "catastrophic events up to and including events that would lead to human extinction." This strong yet controversial statement has caused much debate in the AI research community and in public discourse. One can imagine scenarios in which this may be true, perhaps in some national security-related scenarios, but how can we judge the merit of these types of statements? It is clear that to do so, it is essential to first truly understand the different risks AI adaptation poses and how those risks are novel. That is, when we talk about AI safety and security, do we truly have a clarity about the meaning of these terms? In this talk, we will examine the characteristics that make AI vulnerable to attacks and misuse in different ways and how they introduce novel risks. These risks may be to the system in which AI is employed, the environment around it, or even to society as a whole. Gaining a better understanding of AI characteristics and vulnerabilities will allow us to evaluate how realistic and pressing the different AI risks are, and better realize the current state of AI, its limitations, and what breakthroughs are still needed to advance its capabilities and safety. About the speaker: Dr. Sadovnik is a senior research scientist and the Research Lead for Center for AI Security Research (CAISER) at Oak Ridge National Lab. As part of this role, Dr. Sadovnik leads multiple research projects related to AI risk, adversarial AI, and large language model vulnerabilities. As one of the founders of CAISER, he's helping to shape its strategy and operations through program leadership, partnership development, workshop organization, teaching, and outreach.Prior to joining the lab, he served as an assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and as an assistant professor in the department of computer science at Lafayette College. He received his PhD from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University, advised by Prof. Tsuhan Chen as member of the Advanced Multimedia Processing Lab. Prior to arriving at Cornell he received his bachelor's in electrical and computer engineering from The Cooper Union. In addition to his work and publications in AI and AI security, Dr. Sadovnik has a deep interest in workforce development and computer science education. He continues to teach graduate courses related to machine leaning and artificial intelligence at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Since the French Revolution of 1789, the absence of laws banning interracial marriages has served to reinforce two myths about modern France--first, that it is a sexual democracy and second, it is a color-blind nation where all French citizens can freely marry whomever they wish regardless of their race. Caroline Séquin challenges the narrative of French exceptionalism by revealing the role of prostitution regulation in policing intimate relationships across racial and colonial boundaries in the century following the abolition of slavery. Desiring Whiteness: A Racial History of Prostitution in France and Colonial Senegal, 1848-1950 (Cornell UP, 2024) traces the rise and fall of the "French model" of prostitution policing in the "contact zones" of port cities and garrison towns across France and in Dakar, Senegal, the main maritime entry point of French West Africa. Séquin describes how the regulation of prostitution covertly policed racial relations and contributed to the making of white French identity in an imperial nation-state that claimed to be race-blind. She also examines how sex industry workers exploited, reinforced, or transgressed the racial boundaries of colonial rule. Brothels served as "gatekeepers of whiteness" in two arenas. In colonial Senegal, white-only brothels helped deter French colonists from entering unions with African women and producing mixed-race children, thus consolidating white minority rule. In the metropole, brothels condoned interracial sex with white sex workers while dissuading colonial men from forming long-term attachments with white French women. Ultimately, brothels followed a similar racial logic that contributed to upholding white supremacy. Dr. Séquin earned a BA and MA in English and American Studies at Université Nancy 2, an MA in Women and Gender Studies at Université Paris 8, and her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. She has won a number of awards from a range of institutions including Best Paper Prize from the Council for European Studies' Gender and Sexuality Research Network for the article “Marie Piquemal, the ‘Colonial Madam': Brothel Prostitution, Migration, and the Making of Whiteness in Interwar Dakar”. But I want to call attention to her Edward T. Gargan Prize for the best graduate student paper presented on post-1800 history at the annual conference of the Western Society for French History. Since 2019 she has been an Assistant Professor of Modern European History at Lafayette College. Are you interested in social media branding for fraternity or sorority? Learn from the best! As a son of immigrant parents from Punjab, India, Chirag Nijjer's infatuation for marketing began with his family's store in NYC. From an early age, he was committed to finding ways to draw customers into the shop. Chirag set on his quest for education, earning a B.A. in Economics with a focus on Entrepreneurship. Finally, he was able to access the knowledge and books that were unavailable for his immigrant family. Chirag often could not wait to bring what he learned back to his family, and discovered his passion for teaching and speaking. In Chirag's “9-to-5”, he is a Platinum Customer Success Lead and celebrated team member at Google. He works with some of the world's largest global brands, as an expert in crisis management and proactive problem-solving. For Chirag's “5-9”, he is a dynamic speaker and insightful advisor, having worked with over 300 companies worldwide. With his proprietary methods and marketing strategies, he brings brands out of chaos and into action. In teaching his 3 core theories, Chirag takes businesses and student entrepreneurs from 0-80, putting them in a position to feel confident and comfortable to build their brand and effectively market their products and services. They finally grasp the complexities of marketing in a simplified way, using creativity and luck to push for the final 20 percent. In episode 463 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out how Chirag got customers into his family's clothing store as a kid in NYC, why he decided on Lafayette College for his undergraduate experience, why he joined Zeta Psi Fraternity, how he was able to get the job as a BOLD summer intern at Google, what he does today as Platinum Customer Success Lead at Google, how he was able to be a part of The Mega-Brands That Build America (season 2) on the History Channel, how fraternity and sorority members can build a brand around their chapter on social media, and how college students can bring their idea for a new product or service to market. Enjoy!

The Mexican Revolution (1910–1920) introduced a series of state-led initiatives promising modernity, progress, national grandeur, and stability; state surveyors assessed land for agrarian reform, engineers used nationalized oil for industrialization, archaeologists reconstructed pre-Hispanic monuments for tourism, and anthropologists studied and photographed Indigenous populations to achieve their acculturation. Far from accomplishing their stated goals, however, these initiatives concealed violence, and permitted land invasions, forced displacement, environmental damage, loss of democratic freedom, and mass killings.  In Visible Ruins: The Politics of Perception and the Legacies of Mexico's Revolution (University of Texas Press, 2024), Mónica M. Salas Landa uses the history of northern Veracruz to demonstrate how these state-led efforts reshaped the region's social and material landscapes, affecting what was and is visible. Relying on archival sources and ethnography, she uncovers a visual order of ongoing significance that was established through postrevolutionary projects and that perpetuates inequality based on imperceptibility. Mónica M. Salas Landa is an Associate Professor of anthropology and sociology at Lafayette College. Reighan Gillam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College.
