(Conversation recorded on October 30th, 2024) Human consumption of fossil fuels - especially oil - is a topic filled with complexity, tension, and uncertainty. Understanding this issue requires accounting for a wide range of factors - from dynamic global markets and widely dispersed reserves to ongoing innovation and geopolitical conflicts. Attempting to navigate this intricate landscape is no easy task. But in the midst of these challenges, are there fundamental truths about the future of energy that experts can agree on? Today, Nate is joined by geologist and energy expert, Scott Tinker, to delve into the complexities of global oil supply and demand, the concept of peak oil, and the future possibilities of energy production and transition. Together, they explore the decline rates of oil reservoirs, the physics behind oil extraction, and the role of technology in oil production. Can nations strike a balance between energy security, geopolitical considerations, and the pursuit of a "clean" energy future? How solid are concepts like peak oil demand in a world still grappling with energy poverty? And perhaps most crucially, why is it essential to foster open dialogue and educate the public on these issues, so that we can all play an informed role in shaping our energy future? About Scott Tinker: Dr. Scott W. Tinker is a global energy explorer and educator bringing industry, government, academia, and nongovernmental organizations together to address major societal challenges in energy, the environment, and the economy. Following a 17-year career in the energy industry, Scott spent 24 years as an Endowed Professor and Director of the 250-person Bureau of Economic Geology at UT Austin. He is CEO of Tinker Energy Associates and Chairman and CEO of the nonprofit Switch Energy Alliance. With Director Harry Lynch, Scott co-produced and is featured in the award-winning documentary films Switch and Switch On, screened to millions of viewers globally. Scott is also the host of Energy Switch, an energy and climate point-counterpoint show on PBS.

When that happens everything changes" The problem is that other sports TV pays to broadcast them, golf, Tour de France. At this point, Ironman pays for coverage. And for our sport to get where it needs to be, there needs to be money coming in. Maybe it's pay per view dollars. You aren't going to get terrestrial TV covering 140.6 miles. But it's stories that drive new people into triathlon. In terms of people just watching the pros, will someone pay for that? Will someone pay for 8, 9 10 hours on terrestrial television? 08:12 How does triathlon engage non-triathlon fans? 17:51 Why are people happy to watch a grand-slam tennis final that lasts for 4-5 hours? What is missing from triathlon in comparison? Why do people watch the TdF all day long? 22:42 Does it hurt Bob that triathlon and the athletes don't get the attention that he feels they should? 32:00 Bob talks about the Challenged Athletes Foundation and what it means to him to be and co-founder of it and still heavily involved in changing other people's lives. 35:45 Bob gets choked up when he talks about the friendship between Laura Siddall and Lauren Parker. 42:00 Who will fill Bob's boots with Breakfast with Bob? 43:20 We talk about poncho man Find out more about this week's guests Bob Babbitt https://twitter.com/bob_babbitt (Twitter) Bob Babbitt https://babbittville.com/ (website) https://www.challengedathletes.org/ (Challenged Athletes Foundation) Like what you heard? Bob Babbitt's name is synonymous with the sport of triathlon. Bob did his first Ironman in Hawaii in the very early days in the early 80s and has been hooked on triathlon ever since, both as a competitor and on the media side of it too. He's passionate about sharing people's stories, he loves having Breakfast with the pros and he is passionately devoted to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which he helped to co-found. You'll hear 12:00 Why is Breakfast with Bob such a highlight for athletes? It's a mutual respect and I feel some of my job is to share their stories. 17:39 Does Bob ever get nervous before interviews? Not really, as long as I'm prepared. 19:00 We talk about actor Robin Williams and how he got involved with the Challenged Athletes Foundation. 24:00 Are you a quiet person away from the mic Bob? No, I'm a people person. I like to meet people, I like to find out what makes them tick. 27:14 Do you appreciate how instrumental you have been in the sport of triathlon and to get stories out there? 28:55 What would you say to the people who told you triathlon was a fad in the 1980s? 33:34 Why did Bob believe in triathlon so much? 38:04 Does Ironman care about professional athletes? 41:44 What do you think the future looks like for Ironman? "I think it looks great. Just seeing this group of young athletes having immediate success, there are so many cool things happening. My one main concern is that too many people are doing too many Ironmans. My concern is that you look at Dave Scott, heart issues, Greg Welch, heart issues. so what happens with our athletes now who are doing 5 or 6 Ironmans a year for multiple years. “Do not give up the gains of the past, but rather bring them forward into the future.” Nick Jankel How can leaders embrace the lessons of the past, as well as inspire positive change for the future in their businesses and communities? Considering the pace at which the word continues to evolve, transformational leadership is no longer an option but a necessity, especially for organizations that want to thrive and remain sustainable. Nick Jankel works with leaders to help them take charge of their businesses and notes on the importance of learning self and having control of the body and mind. Nick Jankel is a thought leader whose ideas, tools and research are designed to take the pain out of transformation. He also uses it to blast through the barriers that block creativity and innovation, and instead unleash conscious changes in leadership in ways that bring less suffering, and more thriving into the spaces we touch. Nick is co-founder of Switch On. He's also the chief architect of a rigorous methodology and philosophy for transformation, the Switch On Way, which blends the latest neuroscience with timeless wisdom from great traditions. He's used the Switch On Way to lead organizations as diverse as Novartis and Nike, as well as operated himself in different roles as a coach and presenter. His latest book is called Now Lead the Change: Repurpose Your Career, Future-Proof Your Organization and Regenerate Our Crisis-Hit World By Mastering Transformational Leadership In today's episode, Nick task about his coaching business and the process towards adopting transformational leadership. He also shares his motivation for writing the book on transformational leadership, and how it can be useful in leadership. Listen in! Social Media Handles https://switchonnow.com/ https://web.facebook.com/switchonnow/?_rdc=1&_rdr https://soundcloud.com/switchonnow https://twitter.com/nickjankel https://www.instagram.com/switchonnow/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEdzCMVyPJBtqfkhwRJUUbg Books Spiritual Atheist: A Quest to Unite Science and Wisdom into a Radical New Life Philosophy to Thrive in the Digital Age Now Lead the Change: Repurpose Your Career, Future-Proof Your Organization and Regenerate Our Crisis-Hit World By Mastering Transformational Leadership Become a Transformational Organization: Galvanize Agility Without Losing Stability to Survive and Thrive in the Digital Disrupted and Damaged World Switch On: Unleash Your Creativity and Thrive with the New Science and Spirit of Breakthrough. My core business is called switch on, and we do innovation, leadership, coaching and some systemic change and architecture. We also have Future makers which is a sustainability consultancy and we work with large organizations that want to be net positive. I ran innovation training for clients which is basically creative leadership work, and that pulled me into leadership and coaching. The entire leadership movement of the last 20 years is really a response to management technologies, which were all about control and efficiency. The world is never going to be stable, consistent and clear and organizations need to figure out what they need to do to make sure they remain relevant. Sales is actually where emotional intelligence lives most acutely in an organization, and so there's a lot from that world that is at the core of leadership. What we do is called transformational leadership, which is the ability to cause lasting positive change. I'm trying to get leaders to find a path for themselves and their organization by embracing all that makes a person human. The dilemma therefore is how to create full spectrum workplaces where we allow people to be humans, with all their flaws and fragilities and all their potential power, and still have boundaries. Great leaders are working out that for themselves because you can't help others if you haven't helped yourself. We generally haven't been taught how to do boundaries, but we need to learn to create them. The mind and body is the most complex organizing system in the universe and people should spend time mastering it. Commercial break It seemed crazy that I would be talking about transformational leadership, and I hadn't actually got a book about transformation. The book looks at your own leadership, purpose, and resilience. It then looks at leading your organization, and how well you hold on your organization. I use this book to do two things, communicate my take on transformational leadership, and also put across the seven principles of transformation. The book is not meant to solve all the problems, but it's creates a map of the problems and where you might go for specifics within that. Do not give up the gains of the past, but rather bring them forward into the future. ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? Today we had the pleasure of hosting our good friend Dr. Scott Tinker, Chairman of Switch Energy Alliance and the Director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin. Scott's work is focused on addressing major societal challenges in energy, the environment, and the economy. He has co-produced two documentary films exploring energy across the developing world, " Switch" and its sequel " Switch On." It is always fantastic to visit with Scott and we appreciate his friendship and his never-ending push for the concept of the "radical middle" to create a new, better, and more thoughtful energy debate. In our discussion, we ask Scott for his thoughts on the current energy debate and political environment, his work with students and young professionals, the importance of getting more people out of poverty, energy density, China's and India's growth plans and potential environmental impact, and more. Scott also provides interesting takeaways from a recent and unique conference he co-hosted focusing on the dual challenge of climate and energy. We also discussed Scott's upcoming PBS series called "The Energy Switch," releasing this June. In the series, Scott moderates as leading professionals on both sides of the issues debate the key variables and decision points of our energy future. As you all know, we frequently ask our guests, "What Does The Energy World Look Like In Ten Years?" As you will hear in today's video, Scott forecasted that in ten years, we'll have a "more balanced knowledge base" from which we can make great decisions for our energy future. It was a really interesting answer to the question we are always asking. We had a fantastic discussion with Scott and enjoyed his common-sense, practical, and global perspective. Mike Bradley kicked off the show with an update on energy market performance and weekly energy headlines, warning for a potential summer of pain with nations potentially hoarding supplies and restricting exports. Colin Fenton shared a few thoughts on the new economic environment and reiterated Mike's point that we could experience a challenging summer. As always, thank you for your friendship and support! One request of all of you... if you have a minute, watch Scott Tinker's most recent TED Talk, "The Dual Challenge: Energy and Environment". He's getting lots of views and we want to encourage you to view it and share it with others in your network as well.
Triathlete Arthur Connell joins Helen to raise awareness of bowel cancer and mental health. The successful age group triathlete from North Wales first got into triathlon in his late teens. He says he was a picture of health when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021. After three traumatic surgeries, Arthur is now in remission. But the diagnosis has completely changed his attitude towards triathlon, training and life as a whole. You'll hear: 11:15 Arthur explains how he got into triathlon in the year 2000 but only did it for a few years before having a break for a decade and then getting back into it when he was 29. But And the slippery slope he went down when he threw himself into triathlon and became obsessed by it. 'You can end up losing the plot in terms of why you got into it. I was addicted to trying to get the success from it. But I would say don't live it like I lived it because overall it has had a negative effect on me. 19:00 If you are sacrificing time with your family or relationships, you have to question how much are these sacrifices worth it? Is it really going to make that much difference to your happiness? I think people need to be honest with themselves, so if people notice that there are negatives coming into their life because their drive for their success in the sport, you have to sit down and think whether it is worth it or not. 21:30 Arthur talks about how he felt ahead of being diagnosed with bowel cancer in August 2021. "I was very selfish and greedy in life and with the sport all the way up until I got diagnosed with bowel cancer. But being fit and strong and being busy and wanting to get back into my training did delay me carrying out the FIT test. My wife reminded me a lot of the time to get this test done. I thought it was just hemerroids. There was no way I had a tumour. 24:45 Arthur talks about the mental struggles he has faced since his diagnosis. 'You're just in a mess, but your brain chemistry is tuned in to the wrong channel and it doesn't last for ever.' 29:30 Arthur talks about some of the symptoms to look out for including changes in your bowel habits and blood in your stools. "I was the picture of health and I was not unwell. I cannot emphasise enough, you have to spot cancer when you are well." 34:00 Arthur's return to training and how he is finding getting back into training with an ileostomy and how other athletes are inspiring him. 40:00 Why Arthur has a new respect for everyone around him at events and races 'It opens your eyes a bit more. You look through the field at a race and you don't know who some of the nurses are who have come off a shift and it just makes you think that anyone who gets out of bed and tried to make the world a better place." Our guest for this podcast is Scott Tinker, who runs the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas. However these days he's much more widely known as the driving force behind films like “Switch” and “Switch On” that explore issues around energy access and the energy transition. Scott is passionate about the need for the economy and the environment to - as he puts it - “play well together”, and he sees geoscience as a vital part of that relationship. For some, Scott is a controversial figure, but whatever your views about "Switch", he is a powerful advocate for geoscience. Few people come away from listening to Scott without feeling inspired. So sit back and enjoy the company of one of the best science communicators in the world. (As usual, on our side the conversation it's Iain Stewart, Cam McCuaig and Neil Evans asking the questions. Although please note that Iain's laptop battery ran out half way through this conversation, so the discussion finishes without him. It happens to the best of us!)

Nick Jankel, transformational futurist, the CEO and co-founder of Switch On, and author of the new book Now Lead The Change, interviewed by futurist Trond Arne Undheim. In this conversation, they talk about The Personal Development Market. VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity). Trends in Self-help, Leadership, Therapy, Coaching, and Healing. Brain science. Wisdom. Practical psychology. Bio-Transformation Theory. Reading cognitive v. emotional signals in yourself and others. The future of business and human personal development, next decade and beyond. Being future-proof (as organizations and individuals). The takeaway is that the Personal Development Market is just starting up. If you include Therapy, Coaching, Leadership, and Mindfulness apps, it may well be a 100 billion market. The idea that we should be the change we want to see in the world, a saying that has been attributed to the famous Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, is easy to pronounce but hard to do, but may well be an essential insight. What is for certain is that we cannot sit around waiting for positive change, no matter where we are on the societal ladder. Tying it explicitly to futurist thinking was novel to me and quite refreshing.

The Nobody Guide to Life: Personal Growth and Spirituality Tips and Tools You Can Use Right Now
“I think what we all share…is that we want inner peace. We want a sense of calm and contentment and gratitude.” Nick Seneca Jankel makes that statement on this episode, and I think most of you probably agree. If you've ever said to yourself: "I don't know what lies beyond the five senses and the scientific, but I can't help but feel there's something there," or, even if you have some idea of what is there, then this episode is for you. Learn how Nick arrived at the concept of “spiritual atheism,” the steps to resolve the apparent tension between those worlds, and how it can transform your life and help you thrive. Nick Jankel, author of “Spiritual Atheist” and “Switch On,” has advised 10 Downing Street, Microsoft, and many more, and has taught at Yale and Oxford. Hear the fascinating story of a spiritual journey that led Nick to dive into his spiritual “allergies” to find out who he is in this world – a journey into inner exploration, intense study, being one's own guru, and much more. Learn about the power shifts and influences that turned a materialist life into a life based on science, spirituality, and the synchronicities and serendipities that make life something much more deep and satisfying. We want a sense of calm and contentment and gratitude.” “Every day I look at the newspaper and it's like ‘Wow!” Is this really happening?'” “Religion as I understood it was not giving me nutritious answers…it wasn't inspiring me…I became a proper atheist in the footsteps of Richard Dawkins.” “I was curious about spirituality, but I was allergic to…new age fads.” “I dove in and tried to find the truth of who I am in this world.” “We are our own gurus ultimately.” “That has been a really important part of my journey; just reading the Bhagavad Gita, The Tao Te Ching, the Chuang Tzu…they're so nourishing.” “I don't have a lineage. I'm very rare in this field…I haven't had someone take me under their wing.” “I never get high on my own Kool Aid.” “I need to master the best of science…but I also want to become a master of my material life of consciousness.” --- Website: https://switchonnow.com/ Books: Spiritual Atheist: https://amzn.to/2Nj4RKO Switch On: https://amzn.to/2Nj5ggr --- www.nobodysview.com/affiliate_disclosure/

Everyone has some area of their life where they feel totally stuck, and it usually falls into one of three categories: health, wealthy, or relationships. It's very rare that all three of those areas of life are flowing smoothly at once time, it's usually a balancing act where family life is awesome but work is a mess, or work is cruising but your health is suffering. Have you experienced this? On this week's podcast, we'll talk about engineering a breakthrough in your life with a counterintuitive approach. Nick works through each individual step in depth, helping the reader to get unstuck, identify and let go of limiting habits and beliefs and become more conscious and mindful in each and every day.
