The Great Divide - Luke 12:13-59

Expectations are tricky things. We put our expectations on other people, on situations in our lives, even on ourselves. Something that happens might be good, but if it doesn't meet our expectations then we might not see the goodness in it. This sermon looks at Luke 12:13-59. In this passage, someone comes to Jesus with an expectation that Jesus will do what he wants. He expects Jesus to make his life better by solving a dispute with someone else. The problem is that this person's expectations are defined by this world and by expectations of what is needed in this world or what will make him happy in this world. Jesus uses this as an opportunity to teach all who are listening that there is a "Great Divide" between the expectations of this world and the perspective of what God is doing in eternity. Followers of Jesus need to understand this great divide and the great difference between the priorities of this world and the priorities of the kingdom of God.

In this hilariously unfiltered and surprisingly heartfelt episode, Stephanie recaps her post-Cruel Jewel adventure at the Great Divide 100 in Colorado with guests Ben Bridgeman and Liesl Standish. After a last-minute pivot to avoid altitude overload, Stephanie takes us through her thought process behind picking this particular race just three weeks after finishing one of the most brutal 100-milers in the Southeast. With loops at a “mild” 9,200–9,800 ft elevation and a deceptively runnable course, she thought this would be a safer bet. Spoiler: it wasn't.Liesl and Ben—now proud Coloradans—served as her pacers and emotional lifelines as the race devolved from high hopes to high-altitude hell. The episode dives into the emotional rollercoaster that comes with racing at elevation while undertrained and over-beered, the importance of having the right people by your side, and the unique energy of grassroots trail races. There's discussion on course markings, shade-hopping strategies, and the shock of how 65 degrees in Colorado sun hits different than in Texas. But it's not all suffering and sunscreen. Between the shade breaks, trail hallucinations, and one hilariously defiant mantra—let's just say it wasn't about “having balls”—this episode is packed with raw trail wisdom, post-race reflection, and the kind of unfiltered fun you can only have when you're running on fumes and friendship.Photo Credit: Zach JohnsonBe sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Phred is Back, BIGTIME and he finally reels in his “white whale” guest longtime friend and ultrarunning enigma Steven Tursi. Steven and Phred blab about running streaks, hashing adventures, body image, and a lifelong evolution of what it means to be a runner and a friend. Was Steve the original Johnny Appleseed for Cultra? Enjoy this fabulous Bootleg Cultra (Think Grateful Dead Barton Hall, Cornell University, May 8, 1977)    Episode Highlights: Running Streaks and Ultramarathons Steven shares insights into his nearly 15-year daily running streak (over 5,200 days!)—and the debates surrounding the “continuous mile” rule. Fred and Steven unpack the motivations, sunk cost psychology, and mental games behind long streaks. Recap of Steven's recent race at altitude in the Great Divide 100, and how Colorado elevation humbled him despite living at 5,300 feet. Hashing Culture 101 What exactly is hashing? Steven breaks down the beer-fueled, trail-marked tradition of this global, irreverent running subculture. Stories about hash names (spoiler: “Hot Schweddy Balls”), flour trail controversies, beer stops, and inclusivity in the hashing world. On Body Image and Identity Steven gets candid about his weight, body perception, and running while heavier than most—highlighting his incredible feat of running a sub-24-hour 100-miler at ~275 lbs. Friendship in Adulthood A heartfelt and humorous discussion about how men form (and define) friendships as adults. Fred and Steven reflect on their 15+ year bond, running together at events like Ancient Oaks, TGNY, and Umstead, and how group chats now serve as lifelines for long-distance friendships. The Shift to Journey Runs Steven talks about moving away from racing for results and leaning into slower, more meaningful runs—including a planned 50-mile adventure on the Colorado Trail for his 50th birthday. Memories of the Four Pass Loop, the Manitou Incline “stunt hike,” and past multi-day efforts like Milwaukee to Chicago. Bonus Nuggets Why Steven ran a 24-hour race just to bail at 20 miles and watch football. How rocket launches, mistaken finishes, and sandbagging for friendship make ultra memories. Reflections on The Fair, Starbucks runs after Rocky's, and the joy of repeat traditions.    Tune In If You Like: Not listening to AFB! The Great Divide. It's hard for us to understand - and hard for many people to accept - the extreme polarization that's coming. Now, the rain falls on the just and the unjust; the tares grow right alongside the wheat. We experience good and evil as a mixture. But God will unmix them. Today we are discussing The McLoud Blackberry Festival in McLoud, Oklahoma. The McLoud Blackberry Festival, which began in the early 1940s, is one of the oldest food festival in the state of Oklahoma. Originally a celebration of the local cash farm crop, blackberries, the festival combined with an annual town picnic to form a larger event. The town received national media coverage in 1949 when the McLoud Blackberry Growers Association and the McLoud Chamber of Commerce sent a crate of berries via overnight air freight to President Harry Truman. He said they were "the best he had ever tasted" and declared McLoud to be the "Blackberry Capital of the World". The association disbanded in 1963 due to a poor market, and farmers moved on to a more lucrative crop, but the festival continues to be an exciting event for the city and now draws tens of thousands of attendees from across the nation. Enjoy quarts of fresh blackberries as well as dozens of other treats like blackberry jam, blackberry cobbler, blackberry cinnamon rolls, blackberry snow cones, and funnel cakes topped with, of course, blackberries. Blackberry-themed drinks include sodas, teas, lemonade, "wine-aritas," beer and, of course, wine. The festival also includes carnival rides, craft vendors, food trucks, a huge parade through downtown, live music (with The Great Divide headlining Saturday night), a 5K and fun run, and more. See if you have what it takes at the "Cobbler Gobbler" eating contest, and enter your blackberry creation into the baking contest to see if you can take home top honors. This family-friendly event concludes with a dazzling fireworks display on Saturday night. McLoud was founded in 1895 with the first post office opening on June 21st. It was named for John W. McLoud, a railroad attorney. McLoud became known as the Blackberry Capitol of the World during the 1940s after President Harry Truman was sent a crate of blackberries by the Blackberry Growers' Association. McLoud is a rural community with small town charm and the convenience of large town proximity. Among the small town charm are friendly faces seen among town at local shops and restaurants. Also discussed Dollar Tree, Think Ability, Marietta, Governor J. Kevin Stitt, and McLoud Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to our partner, Think Ability. Hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter, connecting remotely from Colorado and Kentucky respectively, discuss recent happenings in the bourbon world and taste a couple of whiskies. Jim is in Colorado Springs for a Derby party, having flown out of Louisville on Derby Day. He mentions winning an exacta on the Derby race. He is sipping on Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select 90.4 proof, the annual Derby bottle, describing it as a traditional Woodford. He notes that at the Derby party, they were making mint juleps with Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond, and while not his favorite drink, he partook. He even helped make the simple syrup. Todd is drinking Penelope Architect, the third in their series. It's a straight bourbon whiskey sourced from MGP, finished in French oak staves, bottled at 104 proof, and retails around $65. Todd finds it nice, noting the MGP cherry character and a "funky oak" from the French staves. They discuss Lost Lantern's new monthly subscription service, which recently launched after they had previously speculated about something similar. The service costs $90 a month plus shipping for a different bottle each month, special sign-up bottles, behind-the-scenes stories, exclusive events, virtual tastings, and early access to new releases. News from Buffalo Trace includes an announcement that they are adding an EH Taylor bottled-in-bond to the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC). They speculate it will be a well-aged version and note that some EH Taylor bottles already fetch prices similar to BTAC on the secondary market. They express hope that these will be findable, perhaps requiring waiting in line as in past years. Other news includes the release of the new Wild Turkey 8-year 101, which is starting to hit shelves at an MSRP of $49. They note that 8 years is the minimum age, and it could contain older stock. They are looking forward to reviewing it and comparing it to the 70th-anniversary release. Whiskey Thief has released their 2025 Mayday Rye, a 7-year-old, 146 proof (hazmat) rye. It's available at their distillery in Frankfort and their new tasting room in Louisville, and they are now shipping to some states. The hosts praise Whiskey Thief's ryes. Jim mentions an upcoming interview and tour at Law's Whiskey House in Denver during his Colorado trip. He notes Law's has established itself as a pioneer in Colorado whiskey, particularly with their bottled-in-bond and American single malts. Jim's second pour is the 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey finished in Aspen wood staves and maple syrup barrels, the "M" release, at 122 proof. He finds it has a great maple sweetness and notes that 291 whiskies are generally easy to identify due to their unique profile. He mentions his son recently volunteered bottling and labeling at 291, noting things are going well for the distillery. Todd's second pour is Pikesville Straight Rye from Heaven Hill, 110 proof and 6 years old, retailing around $50. He considers it a classic and a great value rye. He recalls being introduced to it during an interview with Bernie Lubbers at the Evan Williams Experience. They briefly discuss the Heaven Hill rye mashbill used for Rittenhouse and Elijah Craig Ryes, noting different proofs and ages. They talk about recent trends, including the rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails, which are exploding in popularity, especially with younger consumers. They mention that the largest distillery in the US is now producing White Claw. While neither host is personally a big fan of seltzers or most RTDs, they acknowledge the market demand and hope bourbon is well-represented in this category. They also discuss the growing trend of THC-infused beverages, noting that hemp-derived THC under 0.3% by weight is federally legal. They express confusion about the health claims and draw parallels to the initial marketing of vaping as a safe alternative to cigarettes. They mention a recent barrel pick they did at James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington for Bourbon on the Banks. They tasted three barrels and selected a bourbon, choosing one they felt would appeal more broadly, although they personally favored another with a great nose (vanilla icing, cake batter). They highlight the historical tour at James E. Pepper, discussing the distillery's long history and the role of James E. Pepper's wife. They note they also tried an excellent rye there aged 7-8 years. They discuss the recent move of RD1 Spirits to a new location and Macaulay Minton's Dark Arts moving into the old RD1 space, noting Macaulay's unique tastes and the interesting decor. They mention Sarah Algrim joining Macaulay. Beau Cumberland's Frankfurt Bourbon documentary is highlighted, with an upcoming screening on Friday, June 13th at The Foundry in Frankfurt, kicking off Bourbon Week. The screening is donation-based, with proceeds going to Frankfurt flood victims. Todd is the narrator for the documentary and receives praise from Jim for his narration skills. They hope to make the documentary more widely available in the future. Jim mentions researching a historical Shannon distillery in Shelbyville from the early 1800s. They recommend Beau Cumberland's YouTube page for short interviews and mini-docs on American spirits. Jim concludes by noting the pleasant "chest hug" from the 291 rye and acknowledging the late hour for Todd. Todd mentions a busy day with his son's soccer game. What if death isn't the end of the story? What if everything broken is on its way to being restored? The Bible tells us that Jesus' resurrection was just the beginning—that one day, He will return, the dead will rise, and God will bring ultimate justice and renewal. What happens when we die? Who will stand before God in judgment? And what does eternity really look like? In this series, we'll explore the future God has promised—one where sorrow fades, justice prevails, and everything sad comes untrue.

This week on The Literary Life Podcast, our hosts Angelina Stanford and Thomas Banks are back with a new “Literary Life of…” interview, this time with their teaching colleague at House of Humane Letters, Dr. Anne Phillips. In addition to her classes at HHL, you can also find Dr. Phillips writing on Substack. Angelina starts off the conversation asking Anne about her reading life growing up and her homeschool experience. She talks about how she came to love the Greek myths and started pursuing Latin. The three of them discuss how having a diet of truly good literature cultivates discernment in reading less valuable books. They also share thoughts on writing as imitation and the great importance of having good ideas over knowing particular forms. Anne also talks about her college and graduate school experiences and the challenges of being in academia in our current culture. They wrap up the conversation with a little look into what Dr. Phillips reading life looks like now as a working, homeschooling mother and wife. To register for Dr. Phillips and Jenn Rogers' upcoming mini-class, “The Great Divide”, please visit HouseofHumaneLetters.com. We're back with a special episode recorded during our Hanging with The Harleys Live on Instagram. If you're not familiar with our Hanging with The Harley's series, it was started during the lockdowns to give our take on the headlines through the lens we see the world, and help people see through the veil and script. Pandora's box has been opened. This is all leading to the Fourth Industrial Revolution - Transhumanism, IoB (Internet of Bodies), IoT (Internet of Things), SMART Cities, and the integration of AI into society.A revolution that takes us further away from connecting with the Divine Source and intelligence, our sovereignty, and instead presents us with a new “god” - their god… an EGOD.Now, don't get me wrong there will be some cool great uses and applications, but there's always a one side of the spectrum vs the other. A “good” and a “not so good” - but that “not so good” is just great for the oligarchs. Even I've had to use AI, and let's face it, we're all contributing to it by using these apps. So is the risk reward ratio skewed?Perhaps.Shout out to all our new listeners in Germany and Australia! We see you! Much love! Stay frosty friends.
