When Dannii Minogue convinced her parents to let her try out for Young Talent Time at the age of seven, she had no idea of the impact it would have – not only on her life, but that of the entire family, too. Because back in the early ‘80s, Minogue was just another surname in the suburban phone book. Today, of course, it’s so much more than that. It’s Dannii. It’s Kylie. It’s disco and dancing and reality TV. It’s World Pride and Mardi Gras and being an ally. On this episode of Something To Talk About, Dannii joins Sarrah to discuss her love of matchmaking, her “lowest moment” – and what it was really like growing up Minogue. You can see more of Dannii Minogue on I Kissed A Girl, streaming on Binge, and, as of February 20, also on I Kissed A Boy with new episodes dropping 8.30pm on Thursdays on Binge. Karen has a strong affinity with all three artists. She grew up singing Olivia's music on Young Talent Time and sang The Seekers repertoire extensively when touring with The Seekers as their lead singer in the early 1990s. Through Karen's work with reconciliation since the 1990s she encountered and was touched by Archie Roach's musical expression of connection to country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Big news! Our sound guy Daryl has shaved off his moustache, and about time. He fought the good fight, but has (as Ox put it) buckled to the pressure to dump it.Ox is disappointed with how tame the pod WhatsApp group is, he feels he's been dropping some comedy gold, usually inappropriate, and getting donuts. His theory is because Third Man's wife Jay is in the group everyone (except Ox) is on their best behaviour. He also reveals how many dick pics he has sent in his life.We discuss moustaches and whether they are appropriate. The general view is that in the 70s they were cool, but not these days. Marko believes that young people these days are competing to look stupid - and moustaches are part of that. He feels sorry for ladies in their 20's because blokes look ridiculous.Ox and Marko are fans of Tina Arena, and used to love Young Talent Time, we sing a rendition of the theme song live on the pod.Marko has arranged Ross the Miner to call in and tell us about what Ross reckons is his terribly sad punting story; he'll buzz later in the show. Marko reveals a rort that happened when he was playing golf - not from him, but from his caddy. He has never revealed this before. He then discussed a famous golfer who went ballistic because the sandwiches weren't free at The Australian Open, and how by naming this bloke on radio and calling him a dickhead, he (Marko) was issued with a fine from the Golf governing body. We then discover that Marko threw a low-level tantrum over the sandwiches at a recent golf tournament. Ironic. But back to Marko's rort story. Not by him, but his caddy Tommy doing something very shonky during a tournament.Ox has brought a 'Can We Still Be Friends' scenario involving his bank which requires the cone of silence, so we can't reveal in the show notes what he is touching on. What happens in the cone of silence must never be spoken about, it's like the first rule of fight club.We get a call on the hotline from Tony in Narooma, NSW, who gives us insights into the origins of our fave, the KT26 shoes.Ox starts talking about his old haunt Beechworth, where his Mum still lives, and he reckons the road to Beechworth is boring with nothing to see - but he has noticed lots of roadkill, and he has a problem with it. Marko wants to hear from a wildlife officer; if you are one, or know one, drop us a message here. And if you have a super-easy job, we want to hear about it.Feedback this week, there is a lot, and we always love running through your comments and thoughts. We explore what Hoodies Magazine is. Marko says he knows all about it, but does he? Ox and Third Man have no idea. Mark proves he does by showing Ox a message from Ben, the owner of Hoodies. Whilst Ox has Marko's phone, footy superstar Corey McKernan messages in which derails the podcast, and we realise that Ross the Miner hasn't called back....the whole pod has gone to shite!Follow a Couple of Blokes, Couple of Beers and get involved with the show on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, or send a voicemail to Ox and Marko here. It's always a delight to chat with Darren Gauci who won a million friends during his magnificent riding career. He begins by looking back on his twilight years in the saddle when opportunities were diminishing. Darren will long remember the send off he was accorded at Caulfield in Feb 2017. He responded in the best possible way by riding a winner. Emotions ran high through the day. He talks of his current routine as a jockey mentor for Racing Victoria, and the services available to up and coming young riders. Darren talks of the natural instinct some hopefuls have for riding. He mentions one modern day champion who didn't have that instinct. The former champion rider looks back on early wins and his first Group 1 at eighteen years of age. He rated the horse very highly. Darren remembers the surprise he got when an enthusiastic fan club started to appear at Melbourne race meetings. He reflects on the wisdom of his master Frank King who devised a simple way to keep his feet on the ground. Darren looks back on his invitation to appear on the top rating television show Young Talent Time. He actually sat on a horse in the Ch 10 studio. He also met his future wife Karen who was a regular on the famous programme. He talks of Karen's journey in the racing world, and their wonderful family of four. Darren looks back on two separate stints in Hong Kong, one brief the other long term. He formed happy associations with two champion trainers. He talks of his disappointment in failing to ride a Melbourne Cup winner and looks back on three seconds in the great race. “The Gauch” pays tribute to a select group of champions he got to ride including Super Impose, Lohnro, Octagonal, El Segundo and Shaftesbury Avenue. He makes a surprise admission about his association with Octagonal. He may surprise you when he acknowledges the best two year old he ever rode. Darren makes mention of his biography “The Gauch” lovingly crafted by Kristen Manning three years ago. There are still copies available. It's a wonderful record of an amazing career. We could have talked about many more career highlights but time caught up. Darren closes with news of an impending event in the Gauci family.

In 1971, Australian TV changed forever when a brand new show called 'Young Talent Time' burst onto screens in lounge rooms across the country. For 18 years, it held a place in the hearts of Australians at a time when family entertainment was king and "mullet" hairstyles reigned supreme. A unique mix of pop hits, flashy dance routines and wholesome performances by a team of talented children and teens catapulted the show into enormous success, and launched the careers of some of the country's biggest music exports including Tina Arena and Dannii Minogue. We take a stroll through the past to discover how this TV-music juggernaut came to be one of the most loved shows ever made in Australia. Subsribe to MPlus here. A big episode for a big name! Dannii Minogue is one of the country's golden girls, with Australians growing up with her on Young Talent Time before she cracked the international market as a pop success; and now as a mum, podcaster and fashion designer, while gracing our screens as a television show judge. Amidst her astronomical fame has been turmoil, from relentless paparazzi snapping her every move to being caught in the 2011 UK phone hacking scandal and being robbed of important personal moments. Jamila Rizvi sat down with Dannii to discuss her life as she blossomed into fame and how that now impacts her son Ethan, landing a record deal as a teenager, the devastating phone scandal, and her new LiSTNR show, The 90s with Dannii Minogue. In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to Debbie Neat about her life as a member of Young Talent Time. YTT has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Debbie takes us down memory lane discussing how a 12 years old experienced tv fame. Young Talent Time ran on Channel 10 (then known as Channel O), from 1971 til 1988. The show featured a weekly junior talent quest and the Young Talent Team who regularly performed popular classics along with the top hit songs of the day. The program was the creation of host Johnny Young and launched the careers of a number of Australian performers including Tina Arena and Danni Minogue. The show took over from “Brian And The Juniors” a similar show hosted by Brian Naylor which ended in 1970 when Naylor was promoted to the role of chief newsreader for HSV7. Over 18 years, the show had 40 team members, some as a direct result of the weekly talent quest. Some Young Talent Timers disappeared into oblivion (many through choice) after their stint on the show was up, but many went on to have successful adult careers in show business as either actors or performers. Because it ran for such a long time and featured young performers, Young Talent Time made an indelible mark on the psyche of several generations of Australian children, leading them to believe that if they tried hard enough, they too could be a ‘star’ like the kids they saw on television. One memorable aspect of the show was the regular closing number, where Johnny Young would sing the Beatles song All My Lovin’ (with which he had an Australian hit back in the 1960’s), accompanied by the entire cast, (who swayed to the music) in an almost nursery-rhyme style. John would pause in the song to say goodnight individually to all the team members. He would also spend a special greeting each week to his mother. It's time for Young Talent Time! JOIN JOHNNY YOUNG AS HE GETS THE YOUNG TALENT TEAM BACK TOGETHER FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! This is an updated version of the program that aired on the 1st May 2021 - it has been edited to include additional interviews, archival clips and special features. https://www.epicentre.tv/live-events/young-talent-time-50th-anniversary The Secret MENS Business website: https://thesecretmensbusiness.podomatic.net The Secret MENS Business podcast: Spotify iTunes Google Manager Amazon Music Podomatic - https://thesecretmensbusiness.podomatic.com The Secret MENS Business Facebook group (MEN Only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/secretmensbusiness01 Secret MENS Business Podcast Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/projectselfacceptance Instagram: secretmensbusiness_smb
In episode six of season four I chat with mother-daughter duo, Alyssa-Jane Cook and Georgia-May Davis, affectionately known as AJ and GM respectively. Mother and daughter alike, these blonde bombshells have graced our tv screens to become beloved household names. AJ is known from almost every iconic Australian TV program a nineties teenager (ahem) could attest to watching, including A Country Practice, Home & Away, and E-Street. And while GM has taken a strong stride in her mother's footsteps, appearing in Young Talent Time at the tender age of 15 and is about to dive into Netflix notoriety, it's AJ's mum they've both taken their style cues from, proving that style leaves a legacy. What's more fitting for Mother's Day than an interview with these two lovely ladies who celebrate a combined love of career, fashion and family. Whatever your relationship to this day is, I hope it's an opportunity for you to celebrate any nurturing woman in your life and the legacies they leave behind. View my shoot with Alyssa-Jane Cook and Georgia-May Davis at MadeleinePark.co. Produced by MITT Work.

Listening to Michael Cassel’s early forays into DIY producing, it is apparent that a career as a major player on stages was his destiny. As an avid letter writer he sought advice and opportunity from anyone prepared to listen to his ambition and passion. At 14 he galvanised a community to support him in his first vision of a live entertainment - the Kiama Carols by Candlelight Christmas Spectacular. The success of the show cemented his hungry pursuit and quest to succeed in a precarious industry. An apprenticeship in a variety of offices and theatres, guided along the way by a masterful faculty of mentors such as Harry M. Miller, James Thane, John Frost, Thomas Schumacher, Michael Eisner and Cameron Macintosh built determination, experience and resilience. Learning on the job provided him with a multitude of creative skills and business acumen.Cassel rightly fits the label of Showman. His enthusiasm for the job is palpable. He surprises with his calm demeanour and extensive knowledge of all aspects of production - personnel and craft. He is respectful of heritage and keen to blaze a way into what live entertainment might be in the future. He formed his company, the Michael Cassel Group, to produce and present the world’s greatest musical and theatrical productions, live entertainment experiences, marquee events and concert attractions. It is well on its way!Productions have included the triumphant 19-month Australian and international tour of Les Misérables, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, the 10th Anniversary Tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the Australian premiere of Cyndi Lauper’s Kinky Boots and the Australian and Asian tour of Singin’ in the Rain. Broadway and West End co-producer credits include DreamWorks’ The Prince of Egypt, Pretty Woman: The Musical and The Cher Show.Next week he premieres the Australian production of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. Michael provided Stages with access to 'the room where it happens' to discover his remarkable story, his passion for the work and some hint at the future, in this most excellent episode of STAGES.

Oh, handle it ya slack-arse molls! We are starting a NEW BOOK, "Puberty Blues," written by Australian authors Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey in 1979! Travel with Jody and Al through chapters 1-2, to Sydney's southern beaches, where surfie chicks and spunky guys eat Chiko Rolls, wear straight-legged Levis, and suck whole oranges in the back of the bus. Protagonists Deb and Sue are two 13-year-old gals who just want to be part of the coolest crew around, the Greenhills Gang. Despite doing all the "right" things, they can't seem to break in — until a fateful call to the headmaster's office gets them noticed by top girls Tracey and Cheryl. To set the scene, Alison presents her findings on Young Talent Time, Luna Park, and 1979's top hits. Meanwhile, Jody gives the scoop on The Red Bikini Girl, the Truro Murders, and provides essential Aussie slang translation. On motherhood, career and Young Talent Time
Dominic is one of Australia's top drummers and is an in demand session musician from Sydney. He works with Sony Music Australia, Warner Music Australia and has performed with artists such as: Cyrus Tim Omaji (Timomatic) Guy Sebastian Jessica Mauboy Delta Goodrem Samantha Jade Nathaniel Justice Crew Rob Mills Stan Walker Taylor Henderson Reigan Derry -International- Jessie J Nico & Vinz Josh Groban Benji Madden Lea Salonga Aston Merrygold Charice Gungor Dom regularly appears in television shows and features including X-Factor, The Voice, The ARIA Awards, Young Talent Time, The Morning Show, The Today Show, Sunrise & Mornings. He teaches privately, upon request, and has hosted popular collaborative jam sessions/residencies, where Sydney's creative and performing arts community are of constant attendance. Dom's first encounter with playing the drums was by getting in trouble with his primary school teacher while banging beats on his little school desk as a child, back in the Philippines. The teacher saw the potential and talent behind the energetic troublesome boy and cultivated it by letting him share his gift, playing a solo marching snare piece for the annual school festival that year. That ignited a flame and passion that would never be extinguished. Having started with the guitar at the age of 9 and the bass after moving to Australia at the age of 13, Dom has always been exposed to music of all styles, growing up and coming from a family of musicians. He gained experience throughout his teens playing for his youth group all around Australia. These years of being self-taught were very crucial to him, allowing him to find and harness his natural strengths as a musician and discovering his own style, voice and character. Dom would play anything and everything by ear when he listened to the radio/TV, while keeping a special place in his heart for melodic rock. After being the most prized all-around musician in his high school, Dom finally found home in the drums once again, deciding to make it his full-time instrument. The movement, physicality, style, raw expression, musicality.. everything about the craft made him fall in love with the art of drumming. Dominic was offered a Bachelor of Music course at the Australian Institute of Music despite not having his Higher School Certificate. During the years of studying and gigging, he has toured, performed and recorded with some of Australia's leading and upcoming talents. He has learnt from some of the world's best musician educators and his studies and exploration has led him to finding a deep passion for experimental music. Dcd is available for private lessons and is currently regularly playing with Cyrus, SSJ & Jeremy Gregory. He is proudly endorsed by Sonor Drums, UFiP Cymbals & Silverfox Drumticks. THE WEST SESSIONS A couple of years ago, Don had a heavy feeling of incompletion and couldn't shake it off. He had made a career out of playing music in the "city scene" but it felt selfish and distant from the people who raised and nurtured me in the arts. He missed the peers who mentored him and breathed the same passion for music, without ANY money or politics involved.. Just for the pure love of it. Finally, some friends and Don have the opportunity to give back, reconnect, (hopefully) inspire, and just have a fun old time sharing music with anyone and everyone; the youth groups, the churches, the schools and multicultural families. "After all, some of the heaviest mf's come from the west ;) Please join us for some nights of good vibes and let's make the scene back home alive again ;) The West Sessions." Says Don! https://www.facebook.com/thewestsessions/timeline

The one where Rob Mills talks about life as a part of the first class of Australian Idol (and his realisation he was never gonna win in a year that had Shannon Noll and Guy Sebastian). He's far more than a one-note wonder though, and we wander through his career on TV including Celebrity Apprentice Australia, Dancing with the Stars and more. There's some talk of his theatre career and his upcoming cabaret show Rob Mills Is Surprisingly Good. How much does Rob know about reality television (more than you or he would think!), he shares with us his favourite TV secrets, what job he's coveting next and in a very special surprise Millsy drops a cracking rumour about the Top Gear UK casting too! Don't say we're not full of surprises here at the MolksTVTalk podcast! Do people sing or mime at live events? SECRETS ARE REVEALED! Thanks so much for all the nice things you're saying about podcast (#MTTpod) too, and pointing people in its direction. There's so much more to come this year and I'm encouraged by your enthusiasm for the pod! GOODNIGHT AUSTRALIA!
