Australian artist releases for October of 1966 brings us a future #1 with The Easybeats, “Sorry” and a future Top 10 with Johnny Young and Kompany's, “Let It Be Me”. Quite a few hidden gems along the way, with four from artists recording on the Perth-based Clarion label; Ray Hoff and The Offbeats, Maggie Fitzgibbon, Robbie Snowden and the Johnny Young and Kompany Top 10 entry. We'll hear the final 45 from Ray Brown and The Whispers, and a track from Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs MkII, that I've never previously heard! And plenty more, with a whole month's worth crammed into a single episode. This podcast has been a month in production due to chemotherapy side effects, mainly fatigue. With chemotherapy now finished for the time being, I can hopefully return to more regular production of these podcasts.
We are at the pointy end of the football season so we do a forensic deep dive into the abyss of the AFL teams that did not make it into September. It may get messy. Musically we dip our lids to the great Australian songwriters Vanda and Young, Terry Britten, Don Walker, Ross Wilson, Johnny Young, Brian Cadd and many many more. For the past two weeks, Clairsy & Lisa have been taking a trip down memory lane, revisiting 1984 through interviews with music and TV stars of that era. If you missed a couple or want to relive the whole series, they're now all in one place, on one podcast. On the music front, we spoke to INXS' Andrew Farriss, OMD's Andy McCluskey, and Mondo Rock's Ross Wilson. We also chatted to the hosts of some of our fave TV shows, such as Perfect Match's Greg Evans, Wheel of Fortune's Baby John Burgess and Young Talent Time's Johnny Young. It was also a massive year for WA footy and cricket, and who better to reminisce about it than with deadset legends John Todd and Kim Hughes. We also got into the cultural impact of the one-dollar coin, which began circulating in 1984.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Let me play a little ‘who am I?' and see if you can guess who's joining us on today's YourLifeChoices podcast. I'm an Australian singer born in 1948 in Brisbane. In 1964, I joined a band called The Kodiaks, hosted a TV show called Uptight and was a regular on TV screens throughout the 1960s and `70s. In September 1969, I recorded a huge hit written by Johnny Young called The Star.
Estrin was born in San Francisco, California in 1949, and fell in love with blues after his sister presented him with Ray Charles' The Genius Sings The Blues when he was 12. He began playing harmonica at age 15, and by age 18 was beginning to work professionally. Early in his career he played with Lowell Fulson, Z.Z. Hill, Travis Phillips, and Fillmore Slim. Estrin names Sonny Boy Williamson II, Little Walter Jacobs and Baby Boy Warren as key inspirations. He played with and was mentored by Rodger Collins (whose 45rpm recordings include "She's Looking Good" and "Foxy Girls" In Oakland). Estrin moved to Chicago when he was 19 and worked with bluesmen Sam Lay, Johnny Littlejohn, Eddie Taylor and Johnny Young. He met and sat in with Muddy Waters at the Sutherland Hotel in Chicago. He told the Sacramento Bee, "Muddy started shaking his finger in my face and said, ‘You outta sight, boy! You play like a man! I know that sound. That's my sound.'" Muddy tried to hire Estrin as a sideman but Estrin did not receive the phone call, and moved back to the Bay Area. He met guitarist Charlie Baty in 1973 and they created Little Charlie & the Nightcats based in Sacramento, California. Estrin fronted Little Charlie & the Nightcats for 30 years and performed around the world. They were nominated four times for the Blues Music Award for Band of the Year. In 2008, Baty retired from touring. Guitarist Kid Andersen joined Estrin with previous band members Hansen and Farrell and they formed Rick Estrin & The Nightcats that same year. wwwmarkhummel.com www.patreon.com/markhummel

In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to Debbie Neat about her life as a member of Young Talent Time. YTT has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Debbie takes us down memory lane discussing how a 12 years old experienced tv fame. Young Talent Time ran on Channel 10 (then known as Channel O), from 1971 til 1988. The show featured a weekly junior talent quest and the Young Talent Team who regularly performed popular classics along with the top hit songs of the day. The program was the creation of host Johnny Young and launched the careers of a number of Australian performers including Tina Arena and Danni Minogue. The show took over from “Brian And The Juniors” a similar show hosted by Brian Naylor which ended in 1970 when Naylor was promoted to the role of chief newsreader for HSV7. Over 18 years, the show had 40 team members, some as a direct result of the weekly talent quest. Some Young Talent Timers disappeared into oblivion (many through choice) after their stint on the show was up, but many went on to have successful adult careers in show business as either actors or performers. Because it ran for such a long time and featured young performers, Young Talent Time made an indelible mark on the psyche of several generations of Australian children, leading them to believe that if they tried hard enough, they too could be a ‘star’ like the kids they saw on television. One memorable aspect of the show was the regular closing number, where Johnny Young would sing the Beatles song All My Lovin’ (with which he had an Australian hit back in the 1960’s), accompanied by the entire cast, (who swayed to the music) in an almost nursery-rhyme style. John would pause in the song to say goodnight individually to all the team members. He would also spend a special greeting each week to his mother. It's time for Young Talent Time! JOIN JOHNNY YOUNG AS HE GETS THE YOUNG TALENT TEAM BACK TOGETHER FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! My guest today is bass player Harry Brus. Born in Austria, Harry and his family moved to Australia when he was 7 years old. Inspired by Hank B Marvin and The Beatles, Harry first picked up the guitar as a teenage. In '65 his band The Amazons scored a record deal with Festival Records and since then he has never stopped working as a professional musician. In '67 Harry jumped at the chance to play lead guitar for pop idol Johnny Young, and later joined Tony Gaha And The In People. A fortunate encounter with sax great Geoff Oakes started Harry's lifelong love affair with soul music. During these years Harry discovered bass-giant, James Jamerson, whose legendary bass style became Harry's true inspiration on the bass. Jamerson, the great Chuck Rainey and Jerry Jemmott became the three gentlemen of bass who inspired Harry's own unique bass style. Harry has played with a host of Australian and NZ greats. Mother Earth, Renee Geyer, Kevin Borich, Australian Crawl, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, Barry Leef, Marcia Hines Jimmy Barnes and countless others. A workhorse of a musician, a true Australian music legend, this has kept Harry in the game for 53 years and counting. This one's a cracker. So sit back back and open your ears to some of the life and times of Mr Harry Brus. This conversation was recorded 05/10/2020. Jerry Portnoy joins me on episode 20 of the podcast.Jerry grew up with the sounds of Maxwell street in his ears. It took him a few years to pick up the harp, but when he did he enjoyed a tremendous career. Starting out with Johnny Young’s band, he had only been playing for six years before his talents landed him the greatest harmonica chair there ever was, playing with the Muddy Waters Blues Band. Jerry went on to play in the Legendary Blues Band and then with guitar legend Eric Clapton. He’s played at the White House, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. July 2016 saw the explosion of the global phenomenon Pokémon Go, where people walk around town (and often into traffic or ditches) trying to catch various animated creatures that look like they are actually sitting there in front of you. (If you really do believe they are in front of you and not just on your smartphone, please seek medical attention immediately.) While many welcome this as a fun way to get out off the couch and others see it as another Sign of the Approaching Apocalypse, truth be told obsession with video games has been around at least since the 1980s and has even affected high-ranking government officials who ought to know better. Johnny Young served in The Hague, Netherlands as Counselor for Administration from 1985-1988; he was interviewed by Charles Stuart Kennedy beginning October 2005.
