Are supermarket BBQ chickens a smart shortcut or something to avoid? Today, we separate facts from fear — plastic bags, heat lamps, skin vs breast, sodium, additives — and how to enjoy a “chook night” without the blow-outs. We also rant (productively!) about convenient nutrition “rules”, seed-oil panic, and the “natural = healthy” trap. Plus, a Woolies pantry hack we genuinely rate: Lebanese-style grains with chickpeas that make a high-fibre lunch in minutes. We finish with your listener question: how to find whole-grain, protein-forward options on weekends when everything seems to be white bread. In this episode BBQ chicken decoded: plastic packaging under heat, microplastics concerns, skin vs breast, sodium, stuffing, and MSG sensitivities — what actually matters for health and what doesn’t. Rant time (useful, we promise): convenient “rules” that only apply when it suits, seed-oil scaremongering, and why “natural” lollies with “fake fibre” aren’t a free pass. Product spotlight: Woolworths Lebanese-style grains & chickpeas — why the ingredient list stacks up, clever add-ins, and how to split the pouch into two balanced lunches. Listener Q: weekend grab-and-go wins when whole-grain options seem non-existent (Subway builds, Vietnamese rice-paper rolls, Mexican bowls, and pre-packing strategies that beat mindless snacking). Former Mecca execs Georgie Gilbert and Camille Peressini had access to just about every luxury body care brand on the market. They're also both mums- realistically, are you buying and using a high end body wash in the shower with your husband and kids? No, you're doing a supermarket run and picking up something there. Both Georgie and Camille knew, however, that the supermarket body care offering was uninspiring. The products didn't look or feel luxe, the scents were generic, and it felt like the accessible options weren't formulated or designed with beauty consumers in mind. Enter, SOMA. If the gap itself wasn't compelling enough, consider that Georgie and Camille were given a 10 week launch timeline from Woolworths. That's 10 weeks to strategise, formulate, package and market an entirely new brand, all while keeping that accessible price point in mind, and have it on the shelves of over 1000 Woolies stores nationwide in less than three months. In this conversation, Georgie and Camille share how they're going about converting habitual supermarket shoppers who've been buying the same body wash for decades, the intricacies of creating body care packaging that's fully and easily recyclable, and what happens when your product accidentally goes viral on TikTok before you've officially launched. In this episode, I'm joined by Jo Abi, senior writer at 9Honey and one of the most refreshingly honest and compassionate voices in Australian media. With a background in radio, over a decade in digital journalism, and a side-hustle writing from the trenches of parenting three neurodivergent kids, Jo has a deep understanding of what makes a story resonate. At 9Honey, Jo writes across consumer, lifestyle, and real-life content — often drawing on her own lived experience and relentless curiosity (yes, she once wrote a whole article sparked by chickpeas on sale at Woolies). She's known for championing everyday Australians, turning PR pitches into powerful stories, and always keeping it real with her readers. On Hack Your Own PR, we explore the art and science of media relations, publicity, and storytelling to help you DIY your PR, amplify your voice and share your message. In this episode, Jo gives us an inside look at: Her journey from radio to mummy blogging to national newsroom. The unique content pillars at 9Honey — think relatability, reliability, entertainment and consumer insight. How she structures her 6am–2pm workday and juggles motherhood, deadlines, and ADHD with humour and grace. What she really wants in a PR pitch (including how many follow-ups are too few!). The value of storytelling with purpose, especially when it comes to vulnerable or advocacy-led case studies. Key Takeaways: Tailor your subject line and hook it with heart. Think about Jo's beats — parenting, personal struggle, quirky consumer finds — and write to them directly. Follow up more than once (four times is Jo's magic number). Include 8–10 relatable, non-staged images with every pitch. Social-media style over polished studio shots. Don't send just a PDF. Include the press release in the body of the email and make it easy to access. What to Avoid: One-size-fits-all pitches. If you're not sure what Jo writes, read her work first — and make your pitch personal. Failing to prepare case studies. Make sure talent is ready for the emotional weight of media attention, and never promise full editorial control. Holding back key details. If the story's about adversity or illness, Jo wants the full arc: the before, during and after — and the visuals to match. Calling 30 minutes after sending your pitch. Be patient, and follow up on a better day. This episode is a goldmine for anyone pitching human-led stories to lifestyle media — and a reminder that compassion and curiosity are your greatest PR tools. Sometimes being naive is the superpower. Just ask Sophie Hood. This week on The Lazy CEO, Sophie—founder of Seoul Tonic—shares how she turned a side hustle into one of Australia's most innovative beverage brands, now stocked in Woolies, BWS, Dan Murphy's, and over 2,000 independents—all without a single full-time employee. With a background in finance and strategy at EY, LVMH, and Red Bull, Sophie had the big-brand experience—but it was her gut instinct, bold thinking, and scrappy execution that set Seoul Tonic apart. She and Jane talk about trusting your gut, getting to market quickly, and why waiting for perfection is often just fear in disguise.Sophie and Jane also dive into the advantages of launching in Australia—why it's a slower, more forgiving market that gives founders the space to test, learn, and pivot on the go. Sophie shares how working full-time allowed her to reinvest every dollar back into the business, how she took calls from the Red Bull office to build credibility, and why prime checkout placement can be more valuable than shelf space. From bootstrapping to winning Food Stars with Gordon Ramsay and Janine Allis, to expanding, this is a crash course in starting scrappy and scaling smart.Note: This episode was recorded at the start of April. Gen Z is spiralling, betch. A skincare founder’s gone viral after realising—for the first time—that the Woolies logo is apparently… an apple?! Cue mass confusion in the comments: some say lettuce, others swear it’s a pumpkin, and a few are still hanging onto the idea that it’s just a W. We unpack the fruity drama, revisit the time Apple (yes, that Apple) came for Woolies legally, and settle once and for all—what is that logo supposed to be?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
