Unverified Accounts, the place for unchecked Asian American opinions on arts and culture, with a smattering of politics! Every week, the trio of Eliza, Chris, and Filip will discuss movies (or sometimes, a book) that are connected to a pertinent cultural/political issue going on right now, usually from online cultures. Eliza is also known as Aesthetic Distance and has her own long-running blog. Chris (fka Oxford Kondo) and Filip are from Plan A Magazine and its podcast, Escape From Plan A.

The Unverifieds, minus Filip (who was away camping on the weekend of Mulan's release), review the new live-action Mulan and how it measures up to the classic animated original. They also dissect a review in the Chicago Tribune by an Asian American writer who claimed that the original was revolutionary and daring, while the new one was conformist and essentially Chinese propaganda.Intro Song: "Chairman Mao" by BambuTWITTER:Chris: @JesuInToastEliza: @aesthdistance1Filip: @filipgwritingREFERENCES:Chicago Tribune Review of Mulan CONTACT US:unverifiedaccts@gmail.com

The Unverifieds, in discussing their love of the movie Lost In Translation, speculate whether such a movie would survive allegations of cultural appropriation in this day and age. They also look at Asian American movies with similar themes, such as Shanghai Kiss and Always Tomorrow In Hong Kong, and whether Asian Americans—or any minorities—have a right to claim a monopoly on cultures, especially when they can screw it up even worse than outsiders can. Intro Song: "Chairman Mao" by BambuTWITTER:TWITTER:Chris: @JesuInToastEliza: @aesthdistance1Filip: @filipgwritingCONTACT US:unverifiedaccts@gmail.com
