McCarthy emphasizes the importance of respecting and understanding the Korean culture and traditions while integrating Westernized systems. He also talks about the unique financial challenges of an international school, including tuition as the primary revenue source and the budgeting process. St. Johnsbury Academy in Jeju, South Korea, is a unique international school that operates within a global education city. The school is supported by the Jeju International Schools, a governmental body that owns the land and buildings. The Jeju International Schools are involved in the daily operations and have certain regulations and limits that the school must adhere to. The school has a long-term plan to potentially expand its enrollment capacity and make enhancements to its facilities. They have recently invested in a million-dollar artificial turf field, which has opened up new possibilities for hosting tournaments and activities. Today I'm looking at linear parks – effectively, old road or rail lines that are now green vectors for hikers and bikers. Some, like my location today, are in the middle of busy cities: I am in Seoul, South Korea, on a 1970s flyover that was threatened with demolition yet rescued and turned into a leafy, elevated walkway above the tumult of the city. New York has a similar option, the High Line, which has taken over a former elevated freight line in Manhattan. Two rail links now turned into cycle/walkways that I particularly like: Singapore's Rail Trail and the Great Western Greenway between Westport, Co Mayo and Achill Island in the west of Ireland. This podcast is free, as is my weekly newsletter. In all my years I have never heard of anything like what just happened in Seoul South Korea in Oct 29,2022! Halloween a highly anticipated and celebrated event that gathers local and foreigners alike to celebrate in the streets of Seoul's capital has ended in tragedy. The death toll is rising and it is all said to be from Cardiac Arrest!?!? Is it the vaccine, is it the crowd cramping, is it reminiscent of the Travis Scoot event? Wtf happened? CNN‘S Will Ripley reported in this event and just happened to be in Seoul has the event unfolded. He shared an Instagram post in Seoul Korea captioned “Seoul Searching” and 12 hours later 151 souls are lost in Seoul Korea. What went wrong and how can it be prevented from happening in the future? Designer Teo Yang spent many years studying and working abroad to gain global experience to influence his work, but eight years ago he returned to Seoul in his native South Korea, from where he discusses with Yoko Choy his mission to breathe new life into the country's famed heritage. He chose specifically to set up his home-cum-studio in one of the capital's traditional villages, immersed in its ancient architecture. But he acknowledges the dichotomy of the still-revered ancient ways existing alongside the super high-tech character of this mega-city and it is his studio's mission to create a harmonious balance between the two in an eclectic range of projects. Considered a leader among South Korea's contemporary designers, he was chosen to refurbish the space for the Gyeongju National Museum. In redesigning Seoul's Kukje Gallery, the space became not just a home for art, but a living space that recreated a collector's gallery together with a dining room, fitness studio and spa – a holistic concept blending art and contemporary lifestyle. Not least, he is also the mastermind behind a range of skincare based on Korean traditional remedies. And in a commission by de Gournay, the celebrated British wallpaper manufacturer, to add a new Korean collection of handcrafted wallpapers to its range, he was able to further promote Korean culture and values internationally through his work. Truly a man for all eras.

In this week's Saturday School, we revisit the 2015 film Seoul Searching, which follows a group of teenagers sent by their parents to a government-sponsored summer camp in Korea for them to reconnect with their roots. However, according to the film's prologue, this real-life program in the 1980s (which director Benson Lee himself attended as a young man) was canceled after a few years cause the kids were too much to handle. Seoul Searching is a nod to John Hughes movies, with the Korean American characters all embodying a certain stereotype -- whether it's the punk-rock Sid Vicious wannabe, the Madonna vixen, the Korean Mexican lover, the uptight Korean German, the Korean American adoptee -- before the film really dives into deep-seeded cultural struggles that exist behind the teen angst. In that sense, the characters in Seoul Searching, including the authority figures, carry much more weight than is allowed in the world of a typical John Hughes movie (incidentally a fictional world where the only notable Asian American character is Long Duk Dong). So go back and watch it, cause it's on Netflix, and it's fun. 80s music. Soju. Fiery romances. Stud muffins. Teary-eyed reunions. Makes us Taiwanese Americans look forward to Valerie Soe's upcoming documentary on The Love Boat, the Taiwanese American equivalent of teenagers getting sent to the homeland for cultural learning with sometimes scandalous results.
Yin & Young Episode 28: Actor, Writer Teo Yoo (유태오)Yin & Young meet with actor, writer Teo Yoo in Seoul and delve deep into his journey as an actor from Germany, to America, to the U.K. and eventually settling in Korea. Mother's side is from North Korea and from a southern island of South Korea.* His father started off as a miner and his mother was a nurse in Germany.* After the mines closed down, the Yoo family started their own deli.* In Korea, Germany, or the U.S., doesn't feel accepted as one of their own.* Is a citizen of the world.* Writing is his therapy. * Teo’s a published children's author in Korea. This week on BEHIND THE LENS, we welcome back writer/director/producer SHERI SUSSMAN who delivers some exciting news about her deliciously dark comedy short, ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD. Joining her this time is one of the stars of ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD, IAN BUCHANAN. You know and loved him in "General Hospital" as Duke Lavery, but in ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD, you get to see a more "decadent" side of Ian's acting ability. Take a listen as Ian steals the show with his Scottish charm and humor talking about ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD, and giving us some "General Hospital" tidbits and food for thought. But before we get to Sheri and Ian, writer/director Benson Lee is talking about his new film, the frothy and fun, SEOUL SEARCHING. Think "Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles" and a little bit of "Ferris Bueller" but with a "seoul searching" Korean spin. Filmmakers will appreciate hearing what Benson has to say about music licensing and developing the film soundtrack. Plus, hear more of film critic debbie elias' exclusive interview with FINDING DORY producer Lindsey Collins, along with a few choice words from Ellen DeGeneres, Ed O'Neill and director Andrew Stanton. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
