This movie looks like an innocent little story about seniors who want to make the most of their golden years, but the craft behind it will knock your socks off. It's a multiple POV, multiple plot film and believe me, this is NOT an easy format to pull off. So if you're writing a story with more than one protagonist and/or more than one plot line, do yourself a favour — listen to this episode and learn from these master storytellers. -V. It's a subject we've covered many times on the pod with reviews of You Were Never Really Here, The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot, Bacurau, Promising Young Woman, Pig, Vengeance, and of course, Do Revenge. How could we forget Thelma? We have even covered a revenge flick set in India with the triumphant RRR. Dev Patel woke up and chose absolute (heartbreaking) chaos, directing himself in a revenge thriller that's basically "John Wick meets Indian mythology but more SAD and ANGRY." This masterpiece has Patel literally wearing a gorilla mask to get repeatedly beaten in underground fight clubs for money before transforming into a one-man apocalypse against corrupt elites. But what makes this cinematic sledgehammer truly magnificent is how it's simultaneously the most visceral action debut since The Raid AND a scathing political allegory about class warfare that features Dev Patel's character learning knife skills from an outcast Indian communtiy. The movie swings wildly between heartbreaking cultural commentary and scenes where our hero gets his face literally set on fire while fighting in a burning kitchen. Let's have some real talk: This was not the best year ever at the movies. When you combine lingering production delays from the pandemic with the very real aftereffects of the Hollywood strikes, you had pretty slender pickings when it comes to big-studio pictures. That said: BFG still went to the movies, all year long! We covered all the film festivals, and saw every film we could, major-release and indie. There are still directors giving us intense personal visions and entertaining us with giant tentpoles. The world of entertainment is changing, but this year's relatively weak crop could still be just a blip.Stephen Garrett, who sees every movie in the world, and Sara Stewart, who used to but has backed off to attend graduate school and pursue an actual career, join perpetual cinephile Neal Pollack to talk about their picks. Everyone loved Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Stephen and Sara try to persuade Neal that Dune 2 is great. Sorry, Neal finds Dune 2 boring. Neal himself loved The Apprentice and Challengers. For his art-house pick, he went with La Chimera. Stephen loved The Brutalist and Queer. Sara goes hard in the paint for Dev Patel's Monkey Man.And because this is Book and Film Globe, Jewish-themed movies came up. Sara was a big fan of Between the Temples, which we've discussed exhaustively on this site. Neal and Stephen went for the more Oscar-friendly 'A Real Pain.' Other movies, selected by our critics but not discussed on this episode, include 'I Saw the TV Glow,' Dahomey,' 'Eno,' and 'His Three Daughters.' Finally, Neal gets real squeamish about 'The Substance.' Sara and Stephen both loved it, but Neal cannot tolerate movies where things come out of other things. It's a lot for him. And if movies in 2025 feature things coming out of other things, he'll assign them elsewhere.Enjoy the show!

Wiz RECOMMENDS Monkey Man Monkey Man is a film that makes critical rookie mistakes. It expands when it should retract. It pulls punches when it should have hit hard. It strives for ambition when it should have kept things to the fundamentals. Dev Patel's revenge thriller about a man named "Kid" who gets into a sinister organization to find a way to murder the people who killed his mother should have just stuck with this simple, concise premise. Instead, Patel decided to add subplots revolving around spirituality and politics that do more to distract from the main story than to enhance it. It's easy to understand why he went this route: there is a complex history involving India, its politics and the spirituality of its people. But was it entirely necessary to put this into a bloody, brutal revenge fantasy? The bloating of the plot is further compounded by the overall story of the film, which is formulaic and tropey at best. If you've seen any revenge thriller, the elements that you'd expect are all in there: Quiet, but menacing lead Over the top evil villains Beautiful but scared woman who is in the crosshairs A person or group of people who help the main character find his strength to get back up. Now, this isn't necessarily bad on the face of it: A good revenge thriller can be quite formulaic but still be exciting and satisfying. To do that, you need really good action...and Monkey Man is decent overall. It is clear Patel can do the hand-to-hand fighting real well as he executes the stunts to feel believable. On top of that, some of the fight scenes are particularly visceral and brutal, showing all sorts of skin tearing, blood and broken bones. But the action is marred by some of the decisions Patel made behind the camera. For example, during the first big fight scenes in the club at the end of the 1st act, the camera movement in the action scenes jump around and feel way too chaotic. Now, there's likely a reason why Patel went this route: to show the inexperience and exasperation of the main character in all the chaos. But that could have easily been told by Patel and the other actors showing that in the action. The camera placement and movement was too much to show too little. What's odd is that Patel did correct this in the big finale of the film: all of the fight scenes and stunts are clearly visible and shows all of the fighting in its brutal, bloody glory. And yet, another strange thing that Patel does in this film is deciding to pull back on some of the brutality. The visuals of the film portray the place the film is set as dark, grungy, grim but bathed in neon light and fluorescent bulbs. You see a lot of squalor and dirty, delpated areas throughout the film. The visual storytelling of the film is saying that this will be a brutal, messy film. And yet, Patel in some scenes shys away from the brutal violence in some scenes. Honestly, the one thing I will remember with Monkey Man is that it feels like a film where the director is working through his first time jitters as the film progresses in plot. Patel goes for something bigger and more thoughtful in his first go around where, honestly, he should have been sticking to the basics and just telling a brutally efficient story. And yet, that's what makes this film interesting: it's a visual example of someone getting their legs up as an artist and finding that vision while showing the cuts, bruises and warts that most directors would rather you not see. As that type of curiosity, it's an interesting and entertaining watch.

However, a psychologist says not all doppelgängers share much in common aside from their looks.

After that, we'll delve into the mystical and mysterious world of The Green Knight and switch gears for some light-hearted adventures with Mike the Knight.Top 5 Knights in Film and Television:Sir Lancelot in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975) - This comedic take on the legendary knight mixes absurdity with classic Arthurian elements, making Sir Lancelot both heroic and hilariously oblivious.Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" series - While not a knight in the traditional sense, Aragorn embodies the knightly virtues of bravery, loyalty, and leadership, playing a crucial role in Middle-earth's battles against evil.Sir William Thatcher in "A Knight's Tale" (2001) - Portrayed by Heath Ledger, Sir William's journey from peasant to pseudo-knight captures the spirit of chivalry and the pursuit of honor and recognition within the rigid class systems of medieval society. The Black Knight in "Excalibur" (1981) - A mysterious and formidable figure, the Black Knight in this retelling of the Arthurian legends represents the darker aspects of knighthood and chivalry, providing a stark contrast to more idealistic portrayals.Brienne of Tarth in "Game of Thrones" (TV Series) - Brienne challenges traditional gender roles within the knightly order, proving herself through unmatched bravery and a firm moral compass, making her one of the most respected and memorable knights in modern television. The Green Knight (2021) Directed by David Lowery, The Green Knight presents a visually stunning and thematically rich adaptation of the Arthurian legend, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." The film follows Gawain, played by Dev Patel, on a perilous quest that explores themes of honor, bravery, and the nature of true heroism. The movie's slow-burning narrative and atmospheric tension set it apart from traditional knightly tales, offering a fresh take on the complexities of personal growth and virtue.Switching to a much lighter tone, Mike the Knight is a delightful animated series that introduces younger audiences to a fantastical medieval world. Mike, a young knight-in-training, embarks on adventures that teach him about responsibility, problem-solving, and the importance of being kind. It's a great way to introduce the concepts of knighthood and chivalry to kids in an engaging and educational manner.Whether you're in the mood for a profound cinematic experience with The Green Knight or looking for family-friendly fun with Mike the Knight, today's episode promises a thrilling exploration of what it means to be a knight in both lore and life. Join us as we don the armor of analysis and venture forth into the realm of knights and nobility.

On this week's show, the panel is first joined by Slate business and culture writer Nitish Pahwa to discuss Monkey Man, Dev Patel's dazzling but muddled directorial debut. The ultra-violent action flick stars Patel as Kid, a young man who works his way into a secret brothel for the super rich, hell-bent on finding the police chief who murdered his mother and exacting his revenge. It's clearly a political statement of a film, rife with references to real-world controversies and corrupt political, religious, and pedagogical practices (all of which Nitish covers in his piece for Slate, “Monkey Man Has a Bold New Vision”). Then, the three jump into Ripley, a new eight-part Netflix series based on Patricia Highsmith's master novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring 47-year-old Andrew “Hot Priest” Scott as the titular seductive psychopath. Directed by Steven Zaillian (The Night Of, Schindler's List, All the King's Men) and with cinematography by Robert Elswith (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, Good Night, and Good Luck), the series is shot in spectacular black-and-white and co-stars Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood and Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf. Finally, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (of Veep, Saturday Night Live, and Seinfeld fame, obviously) has a podcast, Wiser Than Me, which just entered its second season. On it, she interviews iconic older women like Jane Fonda, Carol Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, and Sally Field about the wisdom they've accrued and asks the question: “Well, how should I live?” While the show doesn't fully avoid the pitfalls of the celebrity interview, secrets and things emerge within the course of a conversation and the framework itself gets to the very core of human existence.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers a fittingly existential question from listener Gretel: “Wondering how you, high achievers all, balance ambition with contentment. Do you consider yourselves competitive or is your drive innate? I vacillate between pushing myself harder, striving to achieve more, and being grateful for what I have and where I am. Is contentment a noble endgame in your opinions?” Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Outro music: “Bollywood Star” by Jhukane Bada. Endorsements: Dana: Andrew Scott's performance as Hamlet in 2017. (The full three-hour production can be watched on YouTube.)  Julia: Worn: A People's History of Clothing by Sofi Thanhauser. There's plenty of gunplay, knife-play, ax-play, bone-crunching, tuk-tuk chases, and gouts of blood.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
