Well, the year is coming to an end, and let's kick off our year-end fundraising extravaganza! I will be periodically posting some merch and patron links on the screen. I'm going full retard on the PBS ness of it all.  As you all know, TIR is entirely listener-funded. We don't take corporate money—yet. But hey, at this point, I am not above accepting some venture capitalist funds. If lizard man Peter Thiel wants to drop some change this way, I WILL TAKE IT! Seriously, though, we're gearing up to celebrate five incredible years of bringing you top-tier shows spiced with the finest dick jokes in podcasting.   To finish the year strong, we've lined up an all-star roster of guest hosts. The Green and Red Podcast will be here to dig into the biggest environmental stories of the year. Champagne Sharks is making a triumphant return, and the Antifada crew will also be in the mix. So if you like your podcasts smart, sharp, and a little chaotic, now's the time to help us grow—so big that maybe, just maybe, we too can be part of the Vanguard's podcast drama wars.   In actual news, a suspect is now in custody for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The accused, Luigi Mangione, has become something of an antihero heartthrob online. There are memes, thirst traps, and even some wild right-wing takes—I saw one guy call him “a real-life Batman.” (Spoiler: that guy doesn't know who Batman is.)   But, following the Robin Hood-like response across the political spectrum for Mangione there has been a backlash. Following the murder, a Florida woman named Brianna Boston used the same chilling words reportedly etched on the shell casings found at the scene of the crime—“Delay, Deny, Depose.” Boston was arrested for making terrorist threats after her claim was denied while she was on the phone with Blue Cross. Boston was just venting after having a claim denied and posed no threat, but will this be the move of these companies moving forward?   One thing this incident has done is reignited public outrage about the deadly inefficiency of the American healthcare system. Michael Moore was inspired to drop *Sicko* on YouTube for free, it feels like we're in a moment worth examining.   So let's talk about it. What does Luigi Mangione's viral antihero status say about the state of the public's frustration with corporate healthcare? Is this a sign that Americans are reaching a breaking point with the “profits over people” model? Or is this just another fleeting moment in the outrage cycle, destined to fizzle before it can spark meaningful reform?   Meanwhile, local news outlets are amplifying stories about families suffering under Medicaid cuts and unaffordable premiums. But can the spotlight on healthcare—even one as darkly sensational as this—actually push us closer to socialized medicine? And what does it say about the system that it takes extreme events, like the death of a CEO or the arrest of a desperate woman, to bring these issues to the fore?   Let's dive in. And don't forget to drop a Super Chat! Help us grow, so one day I can afford the kind of healthcare coverage these CEOs would deny me. LISTEN TO CHAMPAGNE SHARKS HERE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/champagne-sharks/id1242690393   Welcome to another episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast, where we explore the deeper political and social dynamics behind current events. Today, we're diving into the recent indictment of once-revered hip hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs on federal racketeering charges. Combs, once celebrated for his entrepreneurial prowess and impact on hip hop culture, is now facing serious accusations of running an elaborate criminal enterprise centered on human trafficking, abuse, and sexual exploitation.   The charges against Combs are shocking but reflect the darker realities lurking behind the glamor of the entertainment industry. As outlined by the justice.gov indictment, Combs is accused of forcing women into "Freak Offs"—elaborate sex performances orchestrated through coercion, violence, and manipulation. He allegedly used narcotics, financial dependency, and physical threats to control his victims, echoing the practices of global human trafficking networks. This brings to mind a broader and more disturbing reality: are we confronting this issue with the seriousness it demands, or are we only shocked when such allegations involve a high-profile celebrity?   While the focus is on Combs now, we must also recognize that these charges are not isolated to one individual. The exploitation of women and their commodification through violence, coercion, and control is a pervasive and deeply entrenched issue in capitalist society—one where power dynamics are exploited to maintain control and assert dominance. These behaviors are happening right now in some corners of the world and for years they've been glorified in the hip hop community. It's just pimping, and as the song says, it ain't easy.   Is hip hop having a “mask off” moment? With the Combs and Young Thug trials, do these legal proceedings have a negative effect on the genre or the way it's perceived? Rap music, once thought to embody “realness” in the case of Young Thug, is being challenged on its authenticity. It's never really been fantasy escapism, but “the unreported news” of the inner city told by the people that lived it. In the case of Young Thug, is this all a lie now? Is it what people like Gerald Horne and Stanley Crouch have viewed? A minstrel show of underclass troupes?   In the case of Combs, the pimp has been a glorified figure for some time in Black urban life. Isn't Puffy nothing more than a modern iteration of Max Julien in The Mack?     Today, we will discuss the nature of these crimes, the structural realities that enable them, and what this case reveals about our collective attitudes toward abuse, celebrity culture, and power. Are we finally waking up to the harsh realities of human trafficking, or do we still turn a blind eye until a famous name is attached to it?   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. This is the best, most good faith conversation about the final chapter of Dave Chapelle's four-part Netflix special The Closer you'll hear anywhere on the internet. Period. Brie is joined by Dr. Steven Thrasher -- the inaugural Daniel H. Renberg Chair of social justice in reporting (with an emphasis on issues relevant to the LGBTQ community) and an assistant professor of journalism -- and attorney, Champagne Sharks podcast host, and cultural critic Trevor Beaulieu. Together, the three try to figure out what's driving Chapelle's focus on the trans community, whether it's all transphobia, or if there's something worth engaging in Chapelle's work. Is Chapelle accurately observing an inconsistency between how punching "down" at Black Americans and punching down at Trans folks are perceived? Or is he just encouraging an unhealthy game of "oppression Olympics?" Is he erasing Black LGBTQ people in his commentary? Or, as he claims, is his audience misunderstanding that his target isn't Trans people. It is, as it has always been, white people? Our good friend Trevor Beaulieu from Champagne Sharks joins Teen and Chris to talk about some of the ways that black and Asian Americans, at least online, seem to be swapping places in who's clamoring for things like media representation and is preoccupied with assimilation, and who's trying to move away from that. Part 2 of this episode will be released as a bonus episode later this week for our Patreon subscribers. Furthermore, we recorded a whole new follow-up episode that will be released on the Champagne Sharks podcast, so check that episode out there. Voting day is just hours away in the USA, a day featuring a good number of Indigenous candidates at various levels: 111 in all, according to Indian Country Today. But even as some do their best to influence the outcome, others have serious questions about their effect, the kind of questions we got deep into over part one of our discussion. Here in part two, we talk about organizing vs. mobilizing, what some call ‘Voteps’ (and their possible Indigenous equivalents), how US and Canada Indigenous politics compare, economic democracy and more—including tentative efforts at predictions about what this week may bring. Back at the table with host/producer Rick Harp are recovering Democrat Kim TallBear, associate professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta, as well as special guest Trevor Beaulieu of the US-based podcast, “Champagne Sharks.” // CREDITS: This episode was edited by Stephanie Wood. Election and Empire: with U.S. voting day just around the corner, what will November 3rd bring? Will it be a worsening of the Republican shit-show that is the Trump presidency or will it be a slide over to that other party? You know the one, the party that can’t even commit to a fracking ban during a climate crisis, much less health care for all its citizens in the midst of a pandemic? And yet, though the outcome may not be immediately clear come election night, what arguably won’t change is where non-Settler interests fit into the big picture of American politics. Be they Black, Indigenous, or people of colour, most such voters are not kidding themselves about whether settler colonialism or white supremacy are on the ballot. So what does that mean then for any marginalized population’s participation in the electoral process? How far does it go, and could or should these energies be more productively invested elsewhere? Joining host/producer Rick Harp for the first half of this special, extended look at American politics are Kim TallBear, associate professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta, as well as lawyer and podcaster Trevor Beaulieu, the driving force behind “Champagne Sharks,” a US-based current events program on race, politics, and pop culture, as seen through the lenses of humour and psychology. // CREDITS: This episode was co-edited by Stephanie Wood and Rick Harp. Brent is back! Along with Ty and Andrew, we talk about some of the protests we have seen and attended so far and try to process the rapid-fire, emotionally-charged succession of news and new developments. It's heated, raw, and un-edited. Also, we're a bunch of white folks trying to sort this out from our perspective but we do wanna make it clear that we're far, far, far from the most relevant, important, or poignant voices and are just hoping it helps others process through similar limited perspectives. I (Ty) strongly recommend listening (and donating to) Ben Dixon's show. Pretty sure it's mentioned in the episode, but in addition to his brilliant articulation of this as a true American revolution (unlike that bourgeoisie shit in our first try), his frank commentary directed toward white Americans in other racial situations has been personally helpful and shifted how I think about a lot. The Discourse is always great too, as is Champagne Sharks. And JCJ of GhettoNewsNetwork. He also had a great appearance on the Antifada recently that's worth checking out. As we said at the end of this episode, who cares where you can find us? Check out some of the above recommendations and let us know if there are any other black voices we can help amplify right now.
